The Last Castrato: "Crucifixus"
Alessandro Moreschi (1858-1922) was an Italian castrato singer of the late 19th century and the only castrato to make solo recordings.
The value of the recording is its uniqueness. The voice is clearly in the soprano range. It is not a great voice, and the technique is either bad or marred by the habits of the time (in particular an abundance of portamento and scoops in the attacks of notes, which can be excruciating). But its timbre is very striking, with the ambiguity that one expects, and it is most intriguing in the high notes.
One should not, however, look at this recording as evidence on the castrati of the 18th century. Moreschi was as far from Farinelli as we are from, say, Rossini. The last castrato to sing on stage, Velutti, had retired 30 years before Moreschi's birth. As his repertoire and technique show, he belongs to the world of late 19th century religious music, not Baroque opera. Whether due to the recording technique or (more likely) to Moreschi's own voice, one learns nothing about the phenomenal strength, agility and holding power that were celebrated qualities of operatic castrati. What remains from this recording is a haunting quality of voice that is clearly unlike anything else.

« mispronounce my surname one more time and my dad will go all 'rude french asshole' on you »
Tumblr media
Name: Charline Lilian Magne
Nicknames: Hun (by Maggie), Baby (by Maggie), Duckling (by Lucas), Cha-Cha [Real Smooth] (by Antonio), Charlie (by everyone)
Height: 180cm (5'11)
Age: 22
Birthday: September 10 19XX
From: Moraga, California
Nationality: French-American
Languages: English, French (which she can understand perfectly fine but is terrible at speaking, much to her father's dismay)
Sexuality: Bisexual
Partner: Maggie (fiancée)
Famous For: Being the daughter of Lucas Magne and founding Heaven In Hell, a rehabilitation program for young convicts
Plays: Princess Charlotte Morningstar
Trivia:
she thought 'charlotte' sounded too formal for the personality of her character, so she asked blitzø if they could change it to 'lottie'. blitzø didn't like 'lottie', so they ended up on 'charlie'. it wasn't supposed to be a reference to charlie herself, but it worked out as a nice homage to the actress playing the character
she thinks her own name is too fancy-sounding which is why she goes for her nickname 'charlie' more than 'charline'. she also enjoys it being a more masc name
she rambles a lot. she has a tendency of getting too excited and rambling out her lines during takes, but it somehow works quite well for her character, so when that happens they tend to go with that take
her mother isn't in her life which she's happy about. she never got along well with her mother. she considered changing her middle name because of it being her mother's name, but her father changed her mind about it last minute
she only realised her bisexuality when she met her fiancée. before that, she hadn't even realised her thoughts about women were attraction because she hadn't a lot of friends to compare her thoughts to before that due to other parents not wanting their children around a 'famous person's kid'
she has a matching tattoo with maggie. it's on the inside of her ring finger. she has a sun because maggie often calls her 'sunshine' or 'sunshine personified'
she has a second home in aix-un-provence in the south of france where she and maggie spend the summer months
she and maggie are childhood sweethearts. they met in school and have been together for 7 years and engaged for 3. the only reason they aren't married yet is because the rehab facility had taken off and neither of them could find time to take off and just enjoy themselves.
they're getting married this year after filming finishes up. the whole crew is invited, with naomi being charlie's "best woman" and velvette being the hair and makeup stylist
she wants to get married on a beach on the coast of italy because italy is where maggie confessed her love to her. both of them were attached at the hip as teens and managed to convince maggie's parents to let her go on vacation with charlie and her father
her favourite animal is a swan because her father always read the ugly duckling to her when she was growing up. in turn, swans uncharacteristically tend to be pretty neutral towards her (unusual for those evil things)
she has always wanted a pet goat because she thinks they're goofy. if it wasn't for travelling in the summer months, she would've had 20 pygmy goats by now.
she's a big believer in fate, that everything happens as it's supposed to, and soulmates, all beliefs that she shares with alastor and naomi, with the three of them being relatively spiritual people
she had an interest in secularist wiccanism but decided she didn't want to limit herself to one label.
she tends to take in seemingly-damaged people like stray animals. that's how she found alastor, who introduced her to everyone else. she found this random guy having a panic attack in the middle of starbucks because he forgot his partner's order and she decided she was going to help him ("maggie, can we please keep him?" "we cannot keep him, hun, he's not a pet.... fine, we can keep him, just stop looking at me like that")
she has a habit of rescuing injured animals too. many a pigeon has been taken to sanctuaries by her hand. kittens saved and sent to rescues, even a litter of puppies once
she convinced oxley to get a service dog and even helped him to about the process of doing so.
she soon came to see alastor and antonio as her second set of parents which they find absolutely hilarious ("i wouldn' say tha' we're good parental figures, my dear" "aw but we'll be the cool parents! tha ones that take ya drinking when yer seventeen and let ya throw parties in our house when yer pops is away")
blitzø's sister was once a resident of the rehab facility she founded. this is how she found out about blitzø's passion project, the hazbin hotel
she gets attached to things, people and ideas too easily. she immediately throws herself 110% into everything which is what makes her such a good lead role for the show
she loves musicals and theatre. alastor often takes her with him to see shows because no one else seems to like them other than oxley
she is professionally trained in opera and has been playing piano since she was 4. she can also play the violin relatively well but she prefers the sound of piano
she can also, to the surprise of the others, metal scream well due to her opera background. her favourite music happens to be metal which valentino finds absolutely hilarious
she's the only one who can somewhat control alastor and oxley's antics (together or otherwise). she's the only one they listen to, apart from their partners, but their partners find the chaos much too entertaining so it's often left to her to sort them out like misbehaving children
she is terrifying when angry. even blitzø finds it's not worth messing with her. she's not easy to anger but once she is angry there's no coming back from it. antonio often jokes "it's because she's french. the french are fuckin' scary. no offence lucas."
she dropped out of college for a psychology degree when she realised college wasn't for her
she was homeschooled until she was 12 (when her mother left). she was homeschooled because her mother had wanted her out of the public eye but both herself and her father wanted her in public school to be a normal child
she has an old duck plushie from when she was born that she keeps on a shelf in her's and maggie's bedroom. they plan to give it to their child one day

Ashley had known Jay for years, since she’d first started as a dispatcher for CPD/CFD. He’d invited her to Lottie’s Pub when they’d gotten off work one day and they’d been friends ever since. She’d had a crush on him since shortly after they’d hung out that first time, but she didn’t say anything, because he’d seen the way he looked at Erin Lindsey.
No one had heard from Jay since he'd left work the other day. It wasn't like him not to have arrived at work yet. He was usually one of the first to show up. Antonio was working on tracing his cellphone.

Feast of St. Rita of Cascia
EARLY LIFE
Rita was born in the year 1381 in the village of Roccaporena, near Cascia , Italy . Her parents, Antonio and Amata Lotti, considered her birth a very special gift from God, for Rita was born to them as they were already advancing in age. As a young girl Rita frequently visited the convent of the Augustinian Nuns in Cascia and dreamed of one day joining their community. Her parents, however, had promised her in marriage, according to the custom of the day, to Paolo Mancini, a good man of strong and impetuous character. Rita accepted her parents’ decision, resolved to see this as God’s will for her.
MARRIED LIFE
The young couple was joined in marriage and soon twin boys were born to them. Rita found herself occupied with the typical concerns of a wife, mother, and homemaker of Roccaporena, while Paolo was employed as a watchman for the town. In Cascia, as elsewhere, a great rivalry existed between two popular political factions, the Guelphs, and the Ghibellines. As a minor official of the town, Paolo often found himself drawn into the conflict, and the strain that this caused probably accounts for the tension, which he sometimes brought into the Mancini household. By her prayer, patience, and affection, however, Rita was able to ease the stress and worry her husband experienced, but she was not able to shield him altogether from the dangers to which society exposed him.
DEATH OF HUSBAND AND SONS
One day as Paolo was returning home from work he was ambushed and killed. The pain which this unexpected and violent death inflicted upon Rita was only compounded by the fear she felt that her two teenage sons, moved by the unwritten law of the “vendetta,” would seek to avenge their father’s death. Rita’s only recourse was to prayer and persuasion. As it happened, the death of both boys from natural causes a short time later removed them from physical and spiritual danger. Despite her great burden she could still thank God that they had died in peace, free of the poison of murder to which hatred and revenge might have otherwise drawn them.
PEACEMAKER
Now alone in the world and without family responsibilities, Rita once more turned her thoughts to the desired vocation of her youth, that of joining the Augustinian Nuns of Saint Mary Magdalene Monastery. Some of the religious of the community, however, were relatives of the members of the political faction considered responsible for Paolo’s death, and so as not to tempt the harmony of the convent, Rita’s request for admission was denied. Fortunately, she was not to be easily dissuaded from following what she knew to be God’s plan for her. She implored her three patron saints — John the Baptist, Augustine, and Nicholas of Tolentino to assist her, and she set about the task of establishing peace between the hostile parties of Cascia with such success that her entry into the monastery was assured.
THE GIFT OF THE THORN
At the age of thirty-six Rita pledged to follow the ancient Rule of Saint Augustine. For the next forty years she gave herself wholeheartedly to prayer and works of charity, striving especially to preserve peace and harmony among the citizens of Cascia. With a pure love she wanted more and more to be intimately joined to the redemptive suffering of Jesus, and this desire of hers was satisfied in an extraordinary way. One day when she was about sixty years of age, she was meditating before an image of Christ crucified, as she was long accustomed to doing. Suddenly a small wound appeared on her forehead, as though a thorn from the crown that encircled Christ’s head had loosed itself and penetrated her own flesh. For the next fifteen years she bore this external sign of stigmatization and union with the Lord. In spite of the pain she constantly experienced, she offered herself courageously for the physical and spiritual well being of others. During the last four years of her life Rita was confined to bed and was able to eat so little that she was practically sustained on the Eucharist alone. She was, nevertheless, an inspiration to her sisters in religion and to all who came to visit her, by her patience and joyful disposition despite her great suffering.
THE ROSE
One of those who visited her some few months before her death — a relative from her hometown of Roccaporena — was privileged to witness firsthand the extraordinary things wrought by Rita’s requests. When asked whether she had any special desires, Rita asked only that a rose from the garden of her parents’ home be brought to her. It was a small favor to ask, but quite an impossible one to grant in the month of January! Nevertheless, on returning home the woman discovered, to her amazement, a single brightly-colored blossom on the bush where the nun said it would be. Picking it, she returned immediately to the monastery and presented it to Rita who gave thanks to God for this sign of love. Thus, the saint of the thorn became the saint of the rose, and she whose impossible requests were granted her became the advocate of all those whose own requests seem impossible as well. As she breathed her last, Rita’s final words to the sisters who gathered around her were, “Remain in the holy love of Jesus. Remain in obedience to the holy Roman Church. Remain in peace and fraternal charity.”
DEATH
Having faithfully and lovingly responded to God’s many invitations to her in the course of her seventy-six years, Rita returned to God in peace on May 22, 1457. Her body, which has remained incorrupt over the centuries, is venerated today in the shrine of Cascia, which bears her name. Her feast is observed on the anniversary of her death, 22 May.
