Will you ever upload more abyssrium or word villas or some other mobile games?

In general, mobile games are really tricky to record. I used to have a fairly decent program I used-- Side Sync, but it’s been discontinued and is now broken. I can still kind of use it (as I did with my recent Pocket Camp video and the STYLIT video), but it’s a huge pain and skews the video entirely as essentially the vertical game is being shown squished into a horizontal perspective. There is no fix.

I haven’t found a program that works for my needs. The closest I can find either have a monthly fee (I don’t mind buying something once, but I don’t use things enough to justify a monthly fee), some kind of recording mark over the video and/or will record sound through the microphone. I actually generally play mobile games muted and live in a very loud house so that helps no one. Or they aren’t for screen sharing at all and are really just to get your emails/alerts which I don’t need.

And Samsung Flow, Side Sync’s replacement, is honestly terrible. I can’t get it to work.

While I could consider an emulator, the issue there is not all games properly carry over progress and my computer is slowly having more issues and just can’t always run them. I do try to use an Emulator for games where I know I will play for a long time, but it can be pretty glitchy (Using Choices and Hogwarts Mystery as examples, my progress isn’t always properly saved and sometimes I have to redo things on my phone after).

As for the games you specifically asked about, being completely honest, I don’t think I’d be uploading more of Abyssrium or Word Villas regardless as, to put it nicely, both have became a bit too greedy for me.

Before I go into it, I want to say I never have an issue with putting money into a game I enjoy. I’ve spent a lot on Abyssrium and a fair amount on Word Villas. But I have very little patience with subscriptions for one and I just... haven’t enjoyed a lot of choices either game has made recently (of the two, despite playing Abyssrium longer, I think Word Villas has made me more upset about the direction they’ve gone).

This will also get quite long, so....

My first worry with Abyssrium came with the pearls. I dislike second currencies and we already had some expensive things (they had a Mermaid for $100 for crying out loud, but they at least seemed to be slowing down with that). Next were some of the event features... like the 150 gift boxes for an event fish. That is A LOT of constantly logging in and I am very much a “let be just be done ASAP and be good” person (I’ll be talking about this more in an upcoming entry) so the added walls were another thing really making me kind of anxious about Abyssrium.

Then they added subscriptions. No ads (which with the amount of their stupid events that required you to watch ads now was HUGE to save time) and the adorable Puffin taunted me, as I had every other fish up to this point. I couldn’t justify $7 a week for that though so I only ever temporarily did the subscription whenever an event happened.

And thus our problem-- we started getting monthly events. Which included a $10-$20 exclusive new species (and sometimes even a second one for you to spend even more money on). And also new dailies which removed more accessible pearl getting, but also were another layer to these events as every single one would have a whole second set of objectives with one that required you to complete 3 Dailies in a row.

I rarely did the dailies, partially due to my burnt out issues when it comes to monotonous tasks, but also because I find tapping incredibly painful. So I was killing my wrist every single event. And that adds up fast.

It was just too much to keep track of. And then they added in a gacha system too that cost event currency or materials and it just... it was too much. This was too much every month and like why I dropped Pocket Camp (and now only really check in for the special gifts), I just couldn’t take a chance to breathe.

Adding in Abyssrium Pole just made it worse which continued some of the worst parts of the original while also making things even slower at times and it’s a shame as there’s some really neat things they did with it, but it was just annoying.

This doesn’t even go into all the other little intricacies I had with some events (Like having to create more than one of each or remake ones I already had because of some objective), but it was just exhausting.

As for Word Villas... Just... ugh, I think what really breaks my heart with this is I LOVE decorating games, but I HATE Match Three′s with a passion so this was so much more my speed and they just had to ruin it. I don’t know if I’ll ever find a replacement either because for some reason every single time someone makes a decoration-based game, they have Match Three firmly printed on their forehead.

I’m going to bullet-print this one because none of it really requires the long description as Abyssrium did for the most part, but it’s just a lot of frustrations and the fact that they just didn’t seem to care about their fans up to this point.

Constant events. Some people hated these events as they just wanted more rooms, but I actually really enjoyed them! The issue mainly came as they were just, like Abyssrium’s issue, happening constantly. I would’ve been fine with a break of no updates, but it was getting a bit exhausting to constantly be doing event stuff... Especially as the events generally required 60 levels minimum to get everything (Some only required 40 but it was still a lot) and it was just tiring to power through so many due to the limited time.

Similarly, there was a glitch with the Chinese New Year/Lunar New Year event and not everyone even got the photo, yet they were never able to fix this.

We also started getting Competitive Events which nobody really seemed to want? Myself included. The game was a solo game. This was entirely pointless and making some items only available to the person in first was super scummy, especially when some people were already out of levels and thus, couldn’t keep going for that #1 spot in the first place.

The Blossom Problem - Blossoms are no longer even in the game, having been replaced by Blue tickets which you can only get randomly through certain things ooor by buying them with a premium currency that you can only get with real money... yet these are now used to get things the blossoms were-- Collectibles that can be used as decorations in various house areas. Some people had over 50,000 blossoms built up only for them to be dumped. They kept asking for more things to be used on. Blossoms were only gotten for hitting certain combo streaks and while not having the combo streak pressure is nice, it’s still a huge slap in the face to long-term players who saved up.

The writing is kind of spotty. In all honesty, I glance over this a lot as I like the characters quite a bit, but anytime the main character talks with her best friend about dieting and not wanting to get fat when they’re super thin, I just cringe. The dialogue is unneeded. It’s a game for crying out loud. And honestly, proof reading is needed.

They did recently let use customize the MC’s appearance to an extent, but we still can’t change her eye color or skin color and hairstyles are set to whatever color they are. But we can’t adjust her sleepwear appearance...

The Premium Currency - There’s just... no ways to get this in-game (or if there are, I have not found them and it’s definitely not much) and yet they keep adding more things that require them.

New Visual Novel feature? Every choice that is somewhat romantic or just not being awful requires it. And this is a shame as I’d genuinely love to read some.

Furniture options you like? Might require it. (Heck, the only other option in the current “limited” boardwalk decorating does each time).

Certain customization options? Require it.

As a note, I’m not even necessarily against premium currencies as long as the prices are fair and it’s possible to earn in-game too, but otherwise when your game has a huge focus on customization and/or collecting, it’s essentially pay to win and that’s a problem.

My biggest issue as we get more and more currencies though is the main one often ends up taking a backseat because of it.

As I mentioned above with Abyssrium, I have no issue purchasing games, but I think having to repeatedly pay to remove ads is super dumb and getting ads between rounds is so annoying, but I don’t always play enough to justify paying every month to remove ads. I also just find it kind of distasteful.

The upped star costs. I get that I’m pretty far in, but needing 3 minimum to 4 or 5 Stars at a time now to do things is honestly just kind of boring. I liked to do bursts of levels than story, but now I just have to do too many levels to do that and I can’t switch off enough to keep myself from getting burnt out.

The stupid mission pass thing. Let. People. Play. At. Their. Own. Pace. And don’t prevent rewards just because people won’t pay for the premium version... there shouldn’t even be two versions.

Too grindy. Too many levels needed for so many things (events, the stupid competitive stuff, etc.) and it’s just exhausting.

The constant events also really did just end up burning me out in and off itself and then running out of my “no ads” time period due to how little I’m playing just gets me more discouraged. I used to be up to date, but I’ve been behind due to the larger costs and lack of time (and then the ad issue and ugh). I can’t even bother with most of their events lately as it just isn’t fun.

Charli D’Amelio, the 16-year-old dancing queen of TikTok, is deep in thought. From the scrunched-up look on her face, an endearing expression familiar to her 70 million followers on the video-sharing app, a casual observer might be forgiven for thinking that she is flummoxed by one of life’s imponderables, and not which of her parents is the better dancer.

“That’s a really hard question,” she replies, after some deliberation. “My mom grew up a competition dancer and sometimes does TikTok dances with me, but my dad did breakdancing, and that’s raw, so if I had to ask someone to break it down in the middle of a party, I would have to say my dad.”

“They’re both really good dancers,” Dixie, Charli’s 18-year-old sister and fellow TikTok sensation, offers diplomatically, adding: “There’s a lot of pressure at family reunions, weddings, and birthday parties.”

And then some. As their not inconsiderable number of fans suggests (Dixie is no slouch in the followers department, with her account garnering over 29 million to date), the D’Amelio sisters are as adept as their parents when it comes to cutting a rug — particularly Charli, who has been studying dance since she was just three years old. It’s a genuineness that goes a long way to explaining their regard on a platform that — despite its early rap for being inauthentic, a venue for creativity cribbed from elsewhere — places a premium on authenticity.

“Charli is accessible in a way I don’t think many other creators are,” says Taylor Lorenz, a technology reporter covering Internet culture for The New York Times. “She’s incredibly humble, and polite, and unproblematic, which is rare in the influencer space. “I’ve been saying these things my whole life,” says Charli, who was tapped in March by Procter & Gamble to create #DistanceDance, a campaign to encourage people to stay-at-home during the pandemic that generated more than 8 billion views and 1.7 million imitation dances from celebrities, influencers, children, families, and others. “The fact that I now get to share that positivity is so important to me. It’s truly what I believe, and now people actually listen.”

“She is the number one person on the app, and has a lot of very young eyes on her,” says Dixie, fidgeting with a piece of toy slime. “I think she’s so happy to have the platform to talk about things that mean a lot to her. That’s important for me, too, but I don’t have the pressure that she has.”

Clearly it’s a genuineness that is resonating beyond the digital landscape. Charli is not only the most followed person on TikTok, but has also parlayed her popularity into collaborations with celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez and Bebe Rexha, as well as brands like Hollister and Sabra hummus, for which she appeared in a 2020 Super Bowl commercial (becoming the first TikTok creator to be featured in an ad during the coveted tentpole sports event). There is also talk of the D’Amelio clan appearing in their own reality TV show, the family having reportedly signed a deal with American Idol production company Industrial Media.

But for all their undeniable talent, personality, and relatable style (fans study the sisters’ choice of clothing, hairstyles, and nails with the rigor of biblical exegesis), their popularity is also the result of a perfect storm of circumstances. For one, they have an undeniably strong support system. Parents Marc and Heidi seem determined to ensure their daughters are happy and safe doing what they love most, while trusting them to make the right decisions and create content that they can be proud of.

“Unless it’s something that requires us to play the parent card,” says Marc, “we let them make a lot of the decisions about the opportunities that are presented to them. The girls are great. If there is something questionable, like foul language or whatever, they will ask, ‘Hey, what do you think about this?’”

Outside the family there is also a solid team in place. The sisters are both managed by Barbara Jones of OutShine Talent and Billy Mann of The Well, and represented by the Hollywood powerhouse United Talent Agency (UTA) — a division of labor which can be confounding to outsiders.

“If you watch the show Entourage,” explains Greg Goodfried, the Co-Head of Digital Talent at UTA, “the managers are Eric, who help Vinny Chase with every aspect of his life, and we [he and his colleague Ali Berman] are Ari. We’re the ones who source and negotiate the deal, and then hand it off to the managers and the client to execute.”

Charli’s rapid ascent — she only started posting last May — is inescapably tied to the rise of TikTok itself, which has gone from a popular global app with negligible traction in the United States to a social-media behemoth, with over 2 billion downloads that has shaken up the entertainment industrial complex and global Internet order. As Goodfried affirms: “It was the right time and the right place for the right person to just emerge on a platform and become a superstar.”

TikTok was an idea whose time had come, and it didn’t hurt that the Chinese conglomerate that owns it poured over a billion dollars into marketing in the first year alone. But there are other important factors at play, including the superior video editing tools the app offers by default.

According to Lorenz, its success lies in no small part to being the anti-Instagram. “It broke the follow graph,” she explains, “and makes all American social networks, where users have to seek out and curate their own feed of content by ‘following’ people, seem archaic. Follower numbers on TikTok are much more of a vanity metric. The ‘For You’ page allows each piece of individual content to live on its own and find its own audience. This is a much better and more engaging way to deliver content than by following an ever expanding group of people/accounts.”

It’s also an easier point of entry for video than Instagram and YouTube, on which aesthetics and production values are key. “With TikTok, it’s literally just your phone,” explains Ali Berman. “Combine that with the emergence of a generation of parents who are more open minded to [social media], and for the first time, people were like, ‘Oh, this is something I can do.’”

“Talking to a lot of my friends,” says Charli, “TikTok is bringing them and their parents a lot closer together, which is really cool. I see a lot of parents and the kids doing dances together. I think it’s awesome that it’s so inclusive of people of all ages.”

Little wonder that brands, with varying degrees of success, are lining up like superfans at a K-pop VIP High-Touch concert. “We’re seeing a ton of enthusiasm from brands,” says Berman, “especially around working with native TikTok creators. They’re really excited, because from a content perspective, it’s a whole new muscle for them to flex.” While opportunities for paid media exist, savvy companies — like Parisian fashion label Jacquemus — are artfully bringing the personalities of their brand to life through the creative usage of in-app effects and filters, and, in the case of Givenchy, which partnered with Young Emperors as a part of its #GivenchyActingChallenge, original sound to encourage user creations.

However, what TikTok delivered to creators, brands, and families at warp speed, the global coronavirus pandemic took away. Just as Charli and Dixie were poised to take advantage of the many opportunities that have promptly come their way, like much of the world, the family retreated indoors to quarantine — hunkering down in a rental property in California.

“I used to want a break from it all for a couple of weeks or so,” says Dixie, who has been accepted to the University of Alabama where she plans to do a business degree. “But after this quarantine period, I never want another break again. I was having the time of my life and I want to get back to work and travel and meet people immediately.”

Though the break temporarily put paid to a slew of meet-and-greet appearances with fans, and led to the rescheduling of several projects – including the Hollister campaign that involved print and videos (not to mention the cancellation of Dixie’s prom) — it has also led to them accruing more followers than ever, with their individual accounts and the combined family one surging over the last few months. They might have been cooped up inside, but so was everyone else — an eager, captive audience for entertaining video content.

It’s also afforded the family a moment to hit the pause button and assess matters. “It brought us a lot closer,” says Marc, “and we were able to have a lot of conversations to prepare for what’s next. Hindsight being 20/20, these are conversations we probably should have had earlier, but everything happened so quickly.”

“When I stop to think about it, I’m like, ‘Whoa, this is so crazy,’” says Charli. “I don’t even know how this happened. But if there’s one thing that I really don’t do, [it’s] overthink things.” Which is just as well, as in the weeks since we spoke, the news broke that TikTok may be banned in the United States due to national security concerns, and Charli and her ex, fellow TikToker Chase Hudson (better known as Lil Huddy) were involved in a messy war of words as part of the TikTok influencer debacle known as the “TikTokalypse.”

Not that anyone should worry too much about the D’Amelio girls. In addition to digital content opportunities, live touring, podcasts, books, TV, licensing deals, and endorsements are all on the table. They’re not going away anytime soon. And on the advice of their family friend, wine critic turned author and marketing guru Gary Vaynerchuk, Marc and Heidi have taught the girls not to “take the positives or the negatives to heart.”

Or, as Charli puts it: “My parents have always been, ‘We don’t care how many followers you have. You still have to do the dishes and take out the garbage. They don’t put me on a pedestal. And I’ve always been big on making sure that what I put out on the Internet about myself is stuff I would want everyone to see. I’m a teenager and [am] obviously not going to make the right choices 100 percent of the time, but I do my best to be the best person I can be, on and off screen.” Spoken like an authentic voice of a generation.

Houston Texans Owner Robert McNair died on Friday at age 81. McNair had "dealt with skin cancer for years and had been undergoing more intensive treatment for that illness and other forms of the disease" since 2013, according to the Houston Chronicle. Even while undergoing treatment, McNair "remained a visible part of the team's daily life until his health worsened this year." His wife Janice McNair will "assume the ownership role of the Texans," and their son, Texans Chairman and COO Cal McNair, will be "in charge of daily operations." NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Bob McNair "left a lasting mark on his city and our league." Said Goodell, "[he] cared deeply about the league and was generous with his time and willingness to share his insights as an exceptional businessman." After the Oilers left Houston for Tennessee, McNair secured the 32nd NFL expansion franchise for $600 million and founded the Houston Texans in 1999. He was able to purchase the expansion franchise with the proceeds from his power generator company Cogen Technologies, which he sold to Enron for $1.5 billion in 1999. While the McNair family is adamant that they will remain firmly in control of the Texans, it's worth noting that David Tepper just paid $2.3 billion for the Carolina Panthers -- and everything's bigger in Texas.

NFL viewership has been up year over year all season, and Thanksgiving was no exception. According to Nielsen reports, NFL Thanksgiving game viewership was up 17% this year, as CBS, Fox, and NBC all saw gains (26.5 million average viewers across three games). According to SportsBusiness Daily, Fox' Redskins-Cowboys in the late afternoon window on Thursday led the way with a total audience delivery of 30.7 million viewers. Meanwhile, CBS drew 26.5 million viewers for Bears-Lions in the early window on Thursday, up from 24.7 million viewers for the comparable Vikings-Lions in the same window last year on Fox. In primetime, Falcons-Saints drew a total audience delivery of 21.9 million viewers, which would be the net’s best Thanksgiving game since Bears-Packers in 2015 (27.8 million viewers). The Beach Volleyball Major Series announce that long-time partner AutoNation will be presenting sponsor for the 2019 Fort Lauderdale Major. America’s only five-star beach volleyball tournament of 2019, held February 5-10, will officially be named the Fort Lauderdale Major Presented by AutoNation. AutoNation, America’s largest automotive retailer, has previously sponsored Major Series events in Fort Lauderdale in 2015, 2017, and 2018. AutoNation will also have activation on site at the Beach Village. Merely a week after rumors broke regarding a potential new Super League in Europe, two of the continent’s most powerful soccer officials shot down the idea as “fiction.” According to the BBC, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin and European Club Association Chair Andrea Agnelli were united on the topic. "The Super League will not happen,” said Ceferin. “It is in a way a fiction now or a dream.” Agnelli, who is also chair of Italian giant Juventus, added to those comments. "I can confirm we have never seen, never discussed, never been involved in the creation of this document,” he noted. “We are fully engaged with UEFA in shaping the game going forward.” The league would effectively replace the Champions League, with 11 of the competition’s 16 clubs being mainstays with the five others invited as annual guests. A completely separate new 32-team competition is expected to be “rubber-stamped” next month at the UEFA meeting, though the Super League is clearly out of the question, at least for now.

The Zozo Championship is preparing to debut next year as Japan’s first-ever PGA Tour event. According to the Japan Times, Zozo, “one of the fastest growing online business companies in the country, will title sponsor the 78-player tournament October 24-27. Zozo is planning to bring a unique twist to the golf event, though details have not yet been released. “We are a company that deals with fashion and IT,” said Zozo Founder and President Yusaku Maezawa. “We would like to abundantly use those for the tournament, making it a fashionable and technological (event), something the world has not seen before.” The Zozo Championship is set to replace the CIMB Classic in Malaysia and is part of the PGA Tour’s "swing through Asia along with stops in South Korea and China.” Bringing a professional golf event of this stature to Japan is “driven partly” by the 2020 Tokyo Games and the sport’s high profile in the country. From the sound of it, the Zozo Championship will take a page from the playbooks of Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, which have both long blended sport and fashion within the tennis realm.

Capital One’s The Match: Tiger vs. Phil was as much a “production-technology showcase” as it was a golf match on Black Friday. The $9 million one-on-one showdown in Las Vegas featured some of the sport’s most revolutionary technology. Before the match, Turner Sports claimed it would introduce “first-of-its-kind integrations centered on predictive data, camera angles delivered by drone and live betting odds during a marquee sporting event for the first time (for U.S. viewers); TopTracer shot tracking (showing real-time trajectory and flight path) and Virtual Eye real-time animations will also be used during the broadcast.” The predictive data that viewers saw throughout the match was generated directly from an algorithm combining ShotLink Intelligence (an “archive with insight/analysis of every shot hit during tour play”) with unique characteristics of Shadow Creek, Las Vegas — the course where event was held. Unfortunately, the technology that broke down for Turner and its carriage partners was the ability to actually deliver the match digitally to paid subscribers, resulting in tens of thousands of dollars in refunds issued to angry golf fans.

JLL expands venue engineering services with Audi Field assignment. The global commercial real estate firm will partner with D.C. United to provide engineering services and ongoing maintenance at the new 20,000 seat-capacity stadium, opened July 2018 near Nationals Park at Buzzard Point. “Operating a sports and entertainment venue, while unique, is like operating and managing any other real estate asset,” stated Megan O’Hara Pawlowski, Senior Vice President, JLL, Venue Engineering Services. “From seamlessly integrating our staff at the venue to implementing best practices for efficiencies and green operating practices, the JLL Venue Engineering Services team works diligently to showcase the very best of our venue assets from Day One. We’re ecstatic to partner with D.C. United at Audi Field to give the teams and fans an experience unlike any other in Major League Soccer.” The new stadium will comprise 550 field-level seats and 1,500 club seats, all of which will be maintained by JLL. JLL will undoubtedly bring their vast knowledge from working at Capital One Arena and Kettler IcePlex to the Audi Field assignment, in a move that’s sure to benefit the entire D.C. sports facility landscape.

The United States Supreme Court has legalized sports gambling, and the United Kingdom is exploring measures of its own. According to JohnWallStreet, the board of the Remote Gambling Association recently met to discuss the matter of self-regulation, “a pre-emptive attempt to stave off industry crippling government legislation within the U.K.” Mobile and digital gambling have boomed as of late in the United Kingdom, spurring a massive spike in gambling-related sporting betting advertisements during matches and on soccer club’s jerseys, as bookmakers increasingly compete for more market share. “If the gaming companies won’t self-govern, perhaps the media companies selling the spots will follow Sky’s lead and do it for them,” JohnWallStreet added. Sky Sports reportedly earns around $262 million per year in advertising money from licensed sports books, so it remains to be seen whether or not the network would impose any kind of a ban.

The MLS season is right in the thick of its playoffs, but Commissioner Don Garber and other MLS leaders are already looking toward significant changes to next year’s schedule. According to The Athletic, one of the biggest changes would see the regular season shortened in conjunction with “a more measured playoff schedule.” The current MLS schedule sees the regular season go from March until October, followed by a six-week playoff leading up to the MLS Cup Final in December. The "tentative plan would see the MLS final played before the November international break." Though specific dates have not been disclosed, playing the MLS Cup final prior to the international break would “likely set the final” somewhere between November 8-15, depending on the year. Sources confirmed that the regular season "would end prior to the October international break," with "Decision Day" in 2019 being held October 6. Another significant change that is expected to be made is the removal the home-and-away legs in favor of single elimination during the playoffs. This schedule, however, could be problematic in 2022: the FIFA World Cup in Qatar that year is set to kick off on November 21.

The Phoenix Suns are in the process of sourcing money to fund a major renovation of Talking Stick Resort Arena. According to SportsBusiness Journal, the Phoenix City Council could vote on a deal as early as next month concerning renovations needed to modernize the 27-year-old facility. The city could contribute as much as $150 million, with the Suns putting up another $80 million, as reported by a source close to the deal. Both the city and the Suns declined to comment on the matter, noting that discussions are strictly confidential at this point. However, “Interim Phoenix Mayor Thelda Williams and city execs are looking to finalize a deal before a new mayor is elected in March.” Funding for the renovation has been discussed for three years now, with no definitive answer coming from the talks yet. And as the Journal article states, “The team has not been interested in sharing a renovated or new arena with the Coyotes, who have been looking to move out of Gila River Arena in Glendale.” A downtown arena continues to make sense for the franchise, as it does for most NBA and NHL teams.

The NFL will return to Mexico City next season despite this year’s last-minute audible. According to the Associated Press, the “Monday Night Football” matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams was pulled out of Mexico due to poor field conditions. But the NFL has already stated its intention to return next season. If the game had been played there, it would have marked the third straight year that a regular-season game was played at the iconic Estadio Azteca. Shortly after the game, which had been moved to Los Angeles, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Mexico President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador met and "confirmed" the 2019 game. The date of the game and the participating teams "won't be known until the league's 2019 schedule is released in the spring.” Earlier this year, the league announced an extensive partnership with the Mexico Ministry of Tourism to stage an annual game south of the border through 2021. While this “football diplomacy” won’t directly ease current border tensions in Tijuana caused by the Honduran migrant influx there, the goodwill from America’s private sector may ultimately influence the Mexican government to better cooperate with the Trump administration on this issue, and on others.

As St. Louis continues to push forward with its MLS bid, a group of city aldermen is urging the soccer team partners “to own their proposed stadium.” According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, this news comes as the “first wrinkle in the city’s effort to land a MLS team.” The biggest issue with St. Louis’s bid has been funding a soccer-specific stadium, with the public reluctant to contribute millions of dollars to the cause. “We've been burned a couple of times before,” said Alderman Christine Ingrassia on the matter. “I think they should own it.” Another alderman in the city expressed a similar concern. “The city should not be in the business of owning stadiums,” said Tower Grove South alderman Megan Green. “We have shown time and time again that it has not worked out for taxpayers.” MLS is expected to announce the next expansion club in the first part of 2019, though no details regarding the selected city have been revealed yet. It certainly doesn’t help the St. Louis MLS bid group’s funding argument that the Rams left the city with a white elephant stadium and an estimated $144 million in debt and maintenance costs when they departed St. Louis for Los Angeles in 2016.

Boxing could be absent from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics if the IOC decides to expel AIBA, boxing’s international federation. According to the New York Times, the IOC could make such a move following Gafur Rakhimov’s election as AIBA president. Rakhimov is described by the U.S. Treasury Department as “one of Uzbekistan’s leading criminals.” The IOC “will decide at a meeting on December 1 whether to cast out AIBA.” If it does, the IOC will “have to scramble to organize an Olympic boxing competition for the Tokyo Games that the boxing federation has not sanctioned.” The IOC is already working toward a solution to get boxing in the Olympics, acting under the assumption that AIBA will be expelled by the end of the year. A source said it would take "something earth shattering" for the AIBA to not be thrown out. Boxing, of course, is one of the holdover sports from the Olympics held in Ancient Greece, so it’s pretty inconceivable the IOC would fail to figure out a way to continue to include the sport in its modern competitions. According to ESPN Media Zone, “More Than An Athlete” is an original eight-episode series that examines the various stages of James’ journey from prodigy to icon, businessman, and philanthropist through the bonds of friendship and partnership forged between four men over more than two decades – James, Carter, Randy Mims, and Rich Paul. The series blends archival footage with new interviews and conversations between the four friends as they recount successes, failures, and key milestones. The series’ first two episodes were made available to subscribers of ESPN+ on November 20, and new episodes will regularly post through January 8. “More Than An Athlete” joins a lineup of ESPN+ original series that includes “Detail with Peyton Manning,” “Detail with Kobe Bryant,” “Earn Everything,” “Quest for the Stanley Cup,” and more. ESPN+ surpassed one million paying subscribers in its first five months and is making a push to be the home for exclusive sports stories and series by integrating sports icons such as James and Manning into the production process.

Major League Soccer and EA Sports have announced an expansion to the eMLS league by adding three teams to feature a total of 22 MLS clubs for the new season. According to Esports Insider, Atlanta United, D.C. United, and FC Cincinnati have all joined the competitive FIFA gaming series, in addition to having all 19 teams that competed in the 2018 season returning. The 2019 eMLS League Series will comprise two events: the eMLS League Series One hosted by LA Galaxy in January and eMLS League Series Two hosted by FC Dallas in February. Both of the events will see all eMLS clubs get involved and will determine the seeding for the 2019 eMLS Cup. More soccer clubs getting involved with eMLS can only lead to more traditional soccer fans tuning in to the FIFA competition to support their on-field counterparts. The NFL and the NBA have been wildly expanding on esports, and for a smaller league such as MLS, getting its foot in the “e-door” might help draw larger total audience numbers.

Amazon is bidding for all of the 22 regional sports TV networks that Disney acquired from Twenty-First Century Fox. According to CNBC, the e-commerce giant's bid includes the New York-based YES Network. Amazon’s bid comes amidst competitors including an unknown sovereign wealth fund and the New York Yankees for the YES Network, and Apollo Global Management, KKR, The Blackstone Group, Sinclair Broadcast Group, and Tegna all making first-round bids for the full slate of networks. Fox, which owns the YES Network with the Yankees, was seen as a front-runner to bid for the nearly two dozen regional networks, but it did not submit a bid in the first round. YES is home to the Yankees and also carries Brooklyn Nets games. The second round of bids is expected before year end; due diligence begins sometime this week. Amazon is already pushing its OTT esports content with its streaming platform Twitch and is now trying to make strides into on-field sports coverage. If this deal goes through, this could open the floodgates for Amazon’s sports streaming.

Tech startup Genies uses famous athletes, and their money, to take on Bitmoji. According to Bloomberg, Genies is an expanded, Bitmoji-like mobile app that allows you to build a three-dimensional cartoon version of yourself — one that looks and even acts like you. So when you message friends, a mini-you mimics what you say. Genies offers superstars a chance to get in on the ground floor of something that might make them richer than they already are. Among the Los Angeles-based company’s boosters are YouTube star Jake Paul, pro basketball stars Russell Westbrook and Kyrie Irving, pop star Shawn Mendes, rapper 50 Cent, and NFL players Dez Bryant and Ndamukong Suh. Suh said he learned investment strategy from Warren Buffet, put $100,000 into Genies last year, and plans to put in more. Akash Nigam is the 26-year- old behind the startup Genies. He’s already raised $25 million in two funding rounds and has already established brand partnerships that include Gucci. By bringing in sports icon for both investment and promotion, Genies has knocked down the doors to bring their digital identities into the mainstream.

Sportlogiq is using AI to revolutionize the way we watch sports. According to SportsPro, the Canadian company uses its artificial intelligence data analytics platform to track live video in real-time. In August, Sportlogiq’s chief executive and co-founder, Craig Buntin, signed the company’s first league-wide deal with the Swedish Hockey League after already having formed ties in the NHL. Sportlogiq’s product automates the entire process of sports data collection, removing the human element while providing deeper context to live events. The AI monitors track more than 158 million data points per game and can provide insights as to whether a pass was made under pressure, or even whether it was an optimal pass in the situation. The technology is also able to break down insights for both coaches and broadcast. Up to this point, it has only been adopted for ice hockey coverage, but Sportlogiq has plans to expand into soccer and beyond. The company only has one issue: figuring out how to not over-inundate viewers – a good problem to have in a world where everyone wants to be better informed. Sports tracking and AI products are at a tipping point for both coaching and broadcast, and Sportlogiq is on a mission to own the market.

Michael Jordan continues to give back to the Carolinas – a sweet treat for the holiday season. The Chicago Bulls legend gave thanks this holiday by going to his hometown in North Carolina to meet with victims of Hurricane Florence and surprise kids at the Boys and Girls Club where he once played as a child. According to CBS Chicago, Jordan brought along 50 pairs of Air Jordan sneakers for the kids at the club, and also helped distribute Thanksgiving meals to hurricane victims at a Lowe’s store in Wilmington. Jordan met with hurricane victims, many of whom benefited from his $2 million donation to the relief efforts in September. Jordan gave $1 million to the Red Cross as well as the Foundation for the Carolinas Hurricane Florence Response Fund. More than just a money-dolling superstar, Jordan continues to give back to his home region and has gone above and beyond to bring a light into the lives of families who have been struggling to get back on their feet.

Metsgiving delivers to all of New York City’s five boroughs. Members of the Mets' front office distributed full Thanksgiving meals door-to-door for the second annual Metsgiving event. Metsgiving was born last year as a way for the Mets to give back to the community during the holiday season. Last year, employees including general manager Sandy Alderson scattered throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens, handing out 50 full meals to families in need. When Thanksgiving rolled around this year, the Mets front office decided to visit all five boroughs, working with local elected officials, the NYPD Community Affairs Division, and community groups to determine who could most use the help. Instead of 50 full meals, the Mets gave out 500 turkeys donated by the supermarket chain Gristedes, plus 25 meals to residents in the Queens neighborhoods of Flushing, Corona, Elmhurst, and Maspeth. Everyone who received a turkey also received Mets tickets. For the Mets, it was the latest event in a year full of giving, which proves that you don’t necessarily need a winning record to bring a smile to the faces of fans.

Chicago sports teams donate $1 million to combat gun violence. The Chicago Sports Alliance consists of Bulls, Blackhawks, Cubs, White Sox, and Bears executives. According to the Chicago Tribune, the organization donated $1 million to fund training for crime lab analysts, and this past week they announced plans to donate another $1 million for more gun violence initiatives. The Alliance is now in its second year and has already raised grant money to continue its support of the partnership of the Crime Lab and Choose to Change, which uses mentoring by Youth Advocate Programs and therapy by Children’s Home and Aid. The Alliance grant helps expand the program to include more young men, a demographic that ranks as the highest risk group for becoming involved in gun violence. New this year – the Alliance is helping fund READI Chicago (Rapid Employment and Development Initiative), an 18-month job training and behavioral therapy program. The collaboration by Chicago’s five major sports franchises echoes a trend in major sports leagues to increase their involvement in community activism and social justice efforts and provides much needed steps towards gun safety in Windy City communities.

Cam Newton provides Thanksgiving dinner for 1,200 underprivileged kids and their families at his annual Cam’s Thanksgiving Jam. According to CBS Sports, 2017’s event fed 800 children, but now in its seventh year, 2018’s 1,200 attendees was the largest number of kids that Newton has ever served. The “Jam” comes in partnership with the Second Harvest Food Bank and grocer Harris Teeter, but it includes more than just good eats. Kids who attended were treated to entertainment in the form of games, music, face painting, and other activities. Additionally, children at the event got to take home a second meal. Newton doesn’t just pay for the dining and entertainment either – he was on hand to help serve the food at TopGolf Charlotte and hung out with the kids at the event. In the middle of the NFL season, “Super Cam’s” philanthropy extends well beyond just one function, as his foundation also serves to provide educational, physical, and social support for young kids.

Pro Football Hall of Famers Roger Staubach and Alan Page received the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House. According to NFL.com, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle were among President Donald Trump's first seven Medal of Freedom honorees; the group also included Elvis Presley and Babe Ruth. Staubach served in the Navy during the Vietnam War prior to an 11-year career with the Cowboys that produced two Super Bowl titles in the 1970s. He passed for 22,700 yards and 153 touchdowns and rushed for 2,264 yards and 20 touchdowns before retiring in 1979, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1985. Page played 15 NFL seasons with the Vikings and Chicago Bears and was named the league's most valuable player in 1971. A nine-time Pro Bowler, Page was also the NFL Defensive Player of the Year twice – in his 1971 MVP campaign and 1973. He was later inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1988. Salut!

Well, in the blink of an eye, we have lived in Paris for six months. We are at the halfway mark of our year abroad and those 183 days went by in a flash. 183 days is a significant number for our family because that happens to be the number of days Antz company has allowed him to work remotely. We discovered this just two weeks before our departure date last February. This added to our stress and anxiety but since we put in so much hard work to get approved for our visas, set up a home exchange, took Olivia out of her French school in LA, and we set everything up to be in Paris for an entire year, we just left not knowing what would happen with Antz job.

Let me explain what the 183 day rule is. There is a treaty with France and the US so that either country can collect income tax from residents living there past 183 days. So in our case, if Antz were to continue working past six months, he would have to start paying into France’s tax system (paying for social services, income tax, etc.) while also still paying income taxes in the US because he is employed by an American company. This article explains it better than I can. To me it sounds like double taxation but there is an exclusion up to the first $100,000 of income in the US. Which for us means he would pay 45% of his income in taxes in France but only 28% past $100,000 in the US. So basically 63% of his income would have gone to taxes for our 2019 tax return. This was not the best case scenario for us financially. Also, his company was not able to set him up as an international transfer employee on a work visa due to the high expenses to add him to European payroll. We even requested to have him work freelance as an independent consultant but that didn’t work either. So his company gave him two choices, return to the US in 183 days or separate from the company. He did both. It was the hardest choice to make, Antz has worked for this incredible company for over 18 years. He was at the top of his career as a Senior Art Director. His company had premium benefits, generous salary and bonus, 401k, profit sharing, traveling to industry events and parties, summer Fridays meant he had every other Friday off, and he worked with some amazing people. I can’t tell you how difficult the decision was. I mean, France is rad but it’s not perfect. We are renting here which feels unstable, but in LA we owned our house and we put so much work into making our house lovely. Every month I worry about the currency conversion which varies so much that sometimes we pay $50 – $70 more depending on the day I pay rent. There is also a language barrier that makes simple tasks challenging. Liv is a wonderful translator but even she can’t help with adult things like setting up our cell phones or making an appointment to have the heat turned on in our apartment. There is crime here like any large city, and if I walk through certain parts of town alone, I feel vulnerable. I had a car in LA so I never had a guy follow me making lewd comments like here. Once I to call Antz to meet me on our street because a guy wouldn’t leave me alone. There is terrorism here so when we walk in crowded spaces, I can’t help but feel tense or worry about trucks driving by. There are more grumpy, rude people in customer service than I ever dealt with in LA. I recently tried to make an appointment over the phone but six out of ten people hung up on me when I asked if they spoke English. That is on me, I need to step my French up. I hate the constant smoking, I get I am in a foreign country but blowing smoke directly in my face is infuriating. I also have to deal with renewing our visas every six months which is a headache. However the benefits still outweigh the cons for us. Liv attends a wonderful French school that is only a ten minute walk away for FREE! This is our number one reason for being here. She is attending such a great school here, her French is impeccable and I love that she gets a hot lunch everyday in a cafeteria and after school activities are included in her daily curriculum. She gets a half day on Wednesdays so she can go to ballet, which frees up our weekends for travel. That is our other major reason to stay. Traveling here is so easy and affordable I can’t see going back to LA only to wait all year for Antz to get a few weeks off of work so we have to cram a vacation in a short time and spend half of our travel budget on a long flight from LA. We have traveled more in the last six months than we have in six years. My main goal is to visit 20 countries and they are all just a train ride or a short flight away. I also am looking forward to having actual weather!

Living in sunny Los Angeles for 40 years was nice, but we rarely had thunderstorms or more than a few days of cold enough weather to bundle up. I have never been in Europe during the fall so I am excited to wear coats and scarves. I am also excited for the lovely Christmas markets coming soon! Well, it’s not like I need to sell living in Paris, my point is moving here comes with huge sacrifice. The first was leaving his job but finding a new job here in Paris won’t be so easy. Everyone I know keeps telling us that French jobs do not pay well. So we had to have a back up plan to keep us going financially. We used most of our savings to move here in March and even though we are saving a lot by not paying tuition or a car payment, it’s still expensive living in Paris. In the end, we realized we weren’t happy in LA and that is most important to us. The bottom line is he made great money in LA but he was working long, stressful days and we only had weekends to spend time together. Most of his salary went towards our bills and tuition so even if he made less here in France, our expenses are less. We also spent all our time in our cars which caused our lifestyle to be toxic and unhealthy. Since moving here, we spend so much more quality time as a family (I am sure it’s mostly because we don’t have a TV!) and walking everywhere is pretty awesome. So, we agreed we would stay in Paris as long as possible!

So a month ago we decided to sell our house. It was heartbreaking to do but really I couldn’t think of any other options. Our tenant was only renting during the summer and she was paying $1,000 less than we listed it for because she was able to pay cash in advance. We couldn’t live here and not have a stable long-term renter. There are also so many expenses of being a landlord which would have been difficult to handle from abroad. Our house has increased in value so much, I met with our real estate agent who happened to be in Paris on vacation with her family to discuss the idea of selling. She was so positive about it we put together a plan just to see how things would work out. Antz was going to fly back to LA at the end of August due to the 183 days deadline being Sept 1st so we decided that if the house sold in a month, we would stay. If the house didn’t sell (my worst case scenario), I would pack up our apartment in Paris and return to LA with Liv. Thirty days is an insane timeline but our agent was confident we could do it. This meant that Antz had to begin the process of getting our cat Lola legally documented to travel to Europe. He had to take her to an USDA accredited vet for an exam and she needed an official microchip implanted. Then she needed a rabies shot and there was a 21 day mandatory waiting period. We had to keep the house furnished so it would be staged for the open houses. We had four dates scheduled and a deadline of Sept 17th to accept offers. I was super nervous because after two open houses we only received one offer for an insultingly low amount. In order for my crazy plan to work we had to get a magic number and I was sweating when the final day arrived. The offers slowly began to come in that afternoon. All of the offers were over our asking price but nothing was close to our magic number. The good news was since there were multiple offers we could counter everyone and ask for over our magic number. We only got one person to agree to our counter offer but we got a little over our magic number!! I had to go to the US Embassy to sign the escrow paperwork with an American notary. The visit was intense, many French guards were quite mean at the entrance. I had to go through several security check points and they took my phone and held it during my visit. I managed these shots before they confiscated my phone.

My poor husband had the daunting task of selling all the things we no longer needed, (we felt like we gave away most of our furniture for next to nothing but this was our cleansing period) cleaning out the house (he must have donated and thrown away one hundred bags) and garage of twelve years of overwhelming stuff in two freaking weeks! Then he had to pack up the house, move our stuff into storage at my Mom’s house and ship our remaining items to France in a storage cube.

Our entire lives worth of stuff had to fit in this 7 foot storage box. It will be shipped to France via boat and won’t arrive until January! I will loose my mind if my breakable stuff gets damaged.

I can’t tell you how stressful this was for Antz, all while he was still going to work everyday and dealing with Lola’s stuff. The sad part was we were apart for a month which seems short, but he missed Liv’s first day of school.

To add to our agony we discovered that Antz cell phone wouldn’t make calls in LA so we could only communicate by FaceTime calling on wifi and texts for thirty days. This guy wins at life. We both had our moments of doubt, frustration and sheer panic but he rose to the occasion physically and mentally in a way I never could. He was running on two hours of sleep by the end of the month. He also had to contend with flying back to Paris with our not so friendly cat Lola. I took two wise precautions for her flight. The first was ordering her these claw nibs (her pink fake nails) so she wouldn’t be able to scratch Antz or the carrier. The second was booking Antz in a premium economy seat on his flight with Air France. It was double their normal fare, but he had more room for Lola and fewer people around to disturb.

Anyone interested in flying a pet from the US to France? This is a long, tedious process and we didn’t have a day to spare to get everything done. The first step is taking your pet to an accredited USDA veterinarian. Our regular vet wasn’t accredited but there was one nearby that they recommended.

I made our appointment online before Antz flew back to LA. The first day he returned he picked up Lola from my best friend Aimee (who was happy to say bye to our cranky feline) and he got her an official microchip inserted. Even if your pet has a microchip in case they get lost, this is a special chip that is registered with the US to track pets abroad. Then she had to wait a mandatory 21 days before getting a rabies shot. It’s important to know that even if your pet has been vaccinated for rabies (like Lola has) they must get another rabies shot 21 days after the microchip has been implanted. We were happy to find out Lola lost weight since her last appointment so she was just under the 8kg restriction. So this put our timeline right on schedule. I made an appointment with APHIS which has an office in Los Angeles to get Lola’s health certificate endorsed. You must make an appointment, no walk-ins.

No pet can travel abroad on a commercial airline without this document (this doesn’t apply to service animals). If you have a dog, it is also mandatory to show a test for tapeworms and flea medication. There is the choice of flying with your pet in the cabin or the cargo. Air France said they only allowed pets up to 8 kg on board. Well 8 kg means 17.6 lbs and our chunky Lola was 18 lbs at her last vet visit! I am a member of a Expats in France group and I read many horror stories about pets in the cargo of airplanes so I was very worried about Lola’s flight. I was confused when it came to finding an airline approved carrier. If she was going in the cargo of the plane, she had to be in a hardshell crate with very specific measurements. However if she was flying in the cabin, she could travel in a soft-carrier but the measurements varied by airline. I ended up ordering this backpack carrier from Amazon. I knew with all the luggage Antz was bringing and having to carry Lola’s paperwork and his passport, it would be easier for him to be hands-free. I was so worried she wouldn’t fit comfortably in it but a week before his flight, the carrier arrived and he sent me this.

She fit snug as a bug and I also ordered these pet pads in case she had an accident. Antz was smarty pants to use a large safety pin to keep the pad in place when the carrier was upright.

I ordered a harness in case Lola tried to escape at anytime. Antz had to take her out of her carrier when going through security and he held her while they did a thorough check. Luckily, our vet gave him calming medicine to give her on the day of the flight. Antz had a couple of hiccups the week before his flight. He had an appointment with the APHIS to endorse Lola’s health certificate at 8:30 am. Because it was near LAX, he had to leave the house before 6 am to be on time. He was the first person there and when he went to pay the $38 dollar fee, they told him that the vet filled out the wrong form! Antz was livid. I never seen him so angry. Turns out the vet gave Antz the form for pets traveling in the cargo hold but Lola was going to be inside the cabin. At least they were sympathetic and allowed him to return the next day with the correct paperwork, or else we would have needed to make another appointment a month later. So this meant that Antz had to drive to the vet’s office, pick up the correct health certificate and drive out to El Segundo the next morning. This all took place during his last week he was working in his office so you can imagine his level of stress. Once he had the endorsed health certificate you have exactly ten days to leave the country. This is important that you already have your flight set up prior to getting all the forms completed. I booked his return flight only two weeks before his departure since we were waiting to make sure our house sold and he would be able to sign all the escrow paperwork before returning to France. Luckily, there were a few premium economy seats still available. I had to call the airline and let them know we were bringing a pet on-board and they charged us $150 fee at check-in at the airport. Most airlines only allow a few pets on-board so it’s a good idea to let them know in advance. The day of Antz flight home was crazy, remember, his phone didn’t work unless he was connected to wifi, so I was only able to hear from him if he was on Starbucks wifi. Terribly frustrating! Lola decided it would be fun to run outside on the morning of Antz flight. He had to ask our neighbors to come help look for her all morning while he was still packing and needed to take a shower before his ride to the airport showed up. We were down to a few hours before he found her under our neighbors house. He had to crawl under there to get her, merde!

My Mom flew to Paris a few days before Antz so I was hosting her all while he was going through the worst of the drama. It was wonderful to have her here as a distraction from all the stress. She has been amazingly supportive of our decision to stay abroad even though that means she will see us less.

Antz somehow managed to pack up and clean the house with the help of his sister and nephew (Merci Clinnie & Justin!). We sold as many pieces of furniture that didn’t fit in our shipping cube. We gifted special items (our plants, and items I couldn’t bear to sell) to our friends and family.

It’s a hard choice to leave the comforts of our home and move to a different country for such an uncertain future but we can always return. We left Antz Honda Element at my Mom’s house and we are renewing our visas in January. I hope this helps anyone thinking of making the move abroad. The past six months was a great test to see if we could make a life in France viable. It’s challenging, frustrating (more so because we don’t speak French yet) but rewarding beyond all expectations.

It’s a Gacha-style randomized drop mechanic that requires you to spend Chrono Crystals (Legends’ premium currency) to unlock any one of the game’s many characters. Each day you’ll be given a one-off discount on the first Summon, dropping the cost to just 20 Crystals. Otherwise, you’ll need to spend 100 Crystals per Summon. While you can drop duplicates, these are also useful as they upgrade existing characters’ Z Power levels (more why that’s important later). Your other option for unlocking characters is the Event Story mode. These limited-time quests usually reward small amounts of Z Power for a specific, Event-related character as a first-time completion reward and for completing Event Missions. These missions are usually really simple — like “battle using a specific character 10 times” — so make sure to check the list and try to unlock as many as you can at once to preserve precious Energy. Best characters — Rarities and Types So you got lucky and managed to unlock Goku, the series’ iconic hero, and Vegeta, the mighty Prince of all Saiyans. All you need to do is add them both to your party of six and start destroying your enemies, right? Not quite. While the traditionally more powerful characters from Dragon Ball are usually among the best to use in Legends, you need to factor in two variables: rarity and types. Currently, there are four different variants of Goku in Dragon Ball Legends, each based on a different part of the ongoing Dragon Ball saga. Two of these (pictured in the gallery above) are based on Goku’s powers and abilities during the Frieza arc. These are Sparking rarity, and currently the strongest characters in the game. However, the Super Saiyan Goku variant is a Ranged Type, while the version charging a cheeky Spirit Bomb is a Defense Type. They also have different Elements, which is important too (more on that in the next section). As you might expect, the Ranged Type is capable of unleashing devastating blast attacks, while the Defence Type is tuned more towards absorbing damage. The final two Gokus are based on the Saiyan saga. One is an Extreme rarity Melee Type, while the other is a Hero rarity Ranged Type. In general, you want to be aiming for a balance of the four types — the final one being Support — in your six-person party to combat tough opponents (especially in PvP). Likewise, you don’t want to fill your entire party with Hero rarity characters as these are the most common drops from Summons and are accordingly the weakest of the lot. Extreme characters aren’t quite as strong as Sparking variants, but usually have enough base strength to become useful when leveled and powered up. Understanding Leveling up, Training, Limit Breaks, Soul Boost, Class Up, and Equipment Fittingly for a series where most of the heroes spend half of their time training, there are multiple ways of raising a character’s stats in Dragon Ball Legends. I’ll go through them one by one to avoid any confusion (trust me, it gets very confusing trying to keep track of them all). Story EXP: This is the simple one. Each character in your party gains experience (EXP) when completing a Story or Event Story stage. You can complete these repeatedly until your Energy runs out. EXP Training: Head to the Training menu, select a character and wait for an allotted time for some bonus EXP. Use Training Weights to increase the EXP gains. There’s also an option for Limited Time Training but nothing has popped up here just yet. It’s worth noting that you set a character to train and still use them in battles, so you don’t have to worry about temporarily losing your strongest fighters. Limit Breaks: Gain Z Power from Summons or Story rewards to massively increase a character’s overall power, indicated by stars. You can Limit Break a character up to 7 stars. Soul Boost: Upgrade a character by unlocking new Boost Panels on the Soul Boost board. These are minor upgrades to individual stats like Health, Strike Attacks, and Blast Defence, but they all add up eventually. Unlocking new Boost Panels costs Zeni (the non-premium currency) and Souls, both obtained by completing Story chapters and Missions. You can also trade Rare Medals (from Missions and by fully completing all Story challenges) for Souls in the Exchange Shop. Class Up/Boost Cores: Once you’ve unlocked a set number of Boost Panels you can activate a Boost Core (called Class Up on the Soul Boost board). This increases the character’s maximum level and opens up new, more powerful Boost Panels. Equipment: Interchangeable items that offer Passive stat buffs. These can be leveled up by spending Souls and Zeni and are obtained by completing Story chapters and Missions. You can sell duplicates to get more Zeni. You can also occasionally unlock more Equipment slots for each character by activating a Boost Core. How Elements work If you’ve got this far, you’re almost ready to start taking the fight to your enemies. Almost. The last variable Legends throws at you is Elements, which is ostensibly rock, paper, scissors just with more options. Put simply, if you don’t have the right Element when duking it out on the battlefield, you are probably going to lose. Each character has a specific Element which are handily color-coded. The five main colors are Red, Yellow, Purple, Green, and Blue. Each main color Element is strong against one Element and weak against another. This all falls into a nice pentagon shape when put together, as you can see in the image below. The two wildcards are the two Special Elements: Dark and Light. Dark is strong against all five of the base Elements, while Light is strong against Dark. So far, there is only one playable character that has a Special Element and that’s Shallot, the main protagonist of the Story mode. You’ll want a good mix of Elements when battling so you can counter your opponent in real-time during the fight. Thankfully, you don’t have to remember all of the Element match-ups during a battle. An upward facing green arrow will show against a character’s profile if they are strong against the current enemy, while a downward red arrow indicates you should switch immediately! How to win PvP battles online You’ve trained hard, your party is full of mighty warriors, and you know how to outsmart your opponents. It’s finally time to take the fight online. As you might expect, fighting an actual person in real-time is much harder than taking on an AI opponent in the Story or Event modes. This is especially true in Rating matches where the gloves really come off as you compete to gain better rewards by climbing the leaderboards each season. Matchmaking is currently a bit iffy in Legends, and trying to beat a higher level opponent is usually a fool’s errand. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been matched up with someone who has a party that’s over twice the level of my own just in Casual matches, let alone for Rating duels. Regardless, certain tactics can turn the tide of a tense fight. Here are just a few: “DOOOOODGE!!!” Heed the advice from everyone’s favorite Namekian and dodge! It’s tempting to start any engagement by flying in and attempting to plant a fist right in your opponent’s smug face, but sometimes waiting for an opening is the best way to avoid a beating. Swipe left or right when an attack is about to hit you (indicated by an exclamation mark) and you’ll perform what’s called a Vanishing Step. This will teleport you to the side of your foe leaving them open to a counter attack. You can’t dodge forever though, as Vanishing Steps deplete a unique status meter. This recharges quite quickly, but you should keep an eye on it so you don’t get caught with a Ki Blast while flailing around. Watch your Ki Gauge Your most powerful standard attacks are all performed by selecting Arts Cards, which drain your Ki Gauge by a set amount. The Ki Gauge refills over time, though you can recharge it faster by holding down on the screen. Only do this when your opponent is stunned by an attack, as it leaves you completely defenseless for a few seconds. The key to victory is carefully managing your Ki Gauge. Using multiple Arts Cards in a row leads to a chain of attacks that can unleash a devastating amount of damage. Use too much Ki, however, and you won’t have anything left in the tank to follow up with. The best strategy is to only chain attacks together when you know the combined damage will knock out the character on the other side of the fight. Whittle their health down first and then throw everything at them to wipe them out quickly. Only use Rising Rush on full health opponents (or to seal a win in style) Hitting a Rising Rush is the most satisfying part of Dragon Ball Legends’ combat. Once you get all seven Dragon Balls by using specially marked Arts Cards (they have little Dragon Balls on them) you’ll get access to a cinematic attack during which, if you pick a different Art Card to your opponent, your remaining team members will all group up and fire their signature blast attacks in a single, explosive attack. Not only does this look awesome, it also deals an enormous amount of damage. With that in mind, you shouldn’t be dropping a Rising Rush on a foe with one health point remaining, at least unless it’s the last fighter and you want to finish with a spectacular flourish in true Dragon Ball style. That’s perfectly acceptable. In most cases, a successful Rising Rush will completely obliterate an enemy’s entire health bar. Use this to your advantage and only activate it when a fresh-faced foe is switched in. That way you send them packing immediately and give yourself an easy numbers advantage. For the ministers and officials assembled, it was an embarrassment all around.

Late last week, as we were at the annual Windsor Energy Consultation (WEC) just outside London, British Gas Plc confirmed that the nation was facing a natural gas shortage as freezing temperatures grip the country.

You see, blizzards, strong winds, drifting snow, and bitter cold recently brought Britain to a standstill as the weather system nicknamed the “Beast from the East” combined with winter storm “Emma” to create some of the most testing weather the U.K. has had to face in years.

Now, I can attest first hand that this cold snap was not something to take lightly.

As a regular attendee of the Windsor Energy Consultation over the past decade, a visit that includes spending three days each year at the royal residence, I know that Windsor Castle can be drafty in any weather.

But this time around, it was positively frigid.

And nationwide, this “big freeze” has brought to light a very serious problem.

And it’s one that is only getting worse…

Bitter Cold Adds (Further) Fuel to the Flames

The unfolding gas crisis has brought about a renewed immediacy to a major political issue that has been percolating in the U.K. for some time now.

You see, for the third year in a row, a portion of my two briefings (one to the plenary meeting; one to the ambassadors), was devoted to the growing global need for a new “energy balance.”

Simply put, that balance involves two related advances.

The first is an expansion in the number of reliable (and distinct) energy sources. The second addresses the extent to which these sources provide a genuine interchangeable network of availability from such sources.

The rise of renewable sources (solar, wind, biofuel, even geothermal) has been the most visible manifestation of the developing balance. But the crucial element to remember is the balance nature of it all.

As we have noted in the past, this is not an exercise in finding a “silver bullet” to wean the market from a dependence on any particular energy source.

All energy sources are required. It’s the integration of these sources that translates into the most efficient, cost-effective, and best solution for both producers and consumers.

Now, among the assembled officials and sector dignitaries at this year’s Windsor meeting, there was a widespread agreement that a global “energy balance” is necessary.

But you wouldn’t know it looking at the situation developing currently.

In fact, despite that agreement, the current gas crisis emerging in the U.K. actually results from a shocking referendum decision back in 2016…

Delays in moving on still contentious (and well over budget) nuclear power plants combined with ongoing pipeline problems from the North Sea offshore fields has left any “energy balance” forward planning very much in limbo.

Yes, the increase in wind power in the U.K. has occurred more rapidly than expected, but it still lags behind the rise in demand.

The majority of demand in the U.K. is still covered by natural gas – both from the North Sea, which is becoming increasingly questionable when it comes to extractable volume, and expanded liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports.

Unfortunately, the nation’s supply issues have been complicated by one event that has overshadowed everything else for more than a year and a half.

I’m talking about “Brexit,” the British decision to leave the European Union.

And the supply issue that followed this landmark decision is creating a major problem for British energy consumers.

But after a sidebar conversation with a British Gas executive at Windsor, the reasoning behind my original argument has become even more compelling…

Why Brexit is Hiking U.K. Power Prices – and the Worst is Yet to Come

As I explained back in July 2016, history tells us that the winter of 1946-1947 was one of the worst experienced by the U.K. in a century – and the coldest in three.

Coming so soon after the end of World War II, an already crippled economy felt the full impact of freezing weather that killed both livestock and crops, while jamming roads and railways with snow.

It got so bad that at one point, Winston Churchill observed that he couldn’t even get his favorite cigars.

But the main concern was the provision of electricity. Not a single power-generating station in all of England had escaped wartime destruction, and a return to “normalcy” in the power sector was still years away.

So during the cold winter of 1946-1947, the entire British population had to hunker down.

Now, the current situation is hardly as dire.

But ever since the U.K. voted to separate from the EU on June 23, I’ve been waiting for the initial signals that this divorce will have consequences in the energy sector.

Now we have one, with dire consequences for British consumers…

Brits Should Expect (Much) Higher Power Prices

The signal shows a coming double whammy for British natural gas users, as a result of the post-Brexit decline of the British pound sterling to more than thirty-year lows against the dollar.

This decline has prompted two energy moves in very different directions. Unfortunately, neither is good for anyone living in the U.K. as temperatures decline…

First, the descent of the pound sterling has prompted U.K. retail natural gas distributors to forego discounts moving forward. This is, of course, based on the same reasoning that will certainly result in another round of appreciable electricity price hikes by the major national utilities.

Maintaining profit margins will be impossible at current levels, given the forex pressure on the bottom line. Most observers also believe that increased taxes are now inevitable, as the unexpected currency (effective) devaluation has made revenue an important factor.

Fact is, even before Brexit, this was placing additional pressure on an already strained power sector.

But in a post-Brexit world, this is leading to some serious difficulties, both for end users and domestic power distributors, with problems – some Brexit-related, some not – hitting all British energy sources…

The U.K. Cut its Winter Gas Reserves – Just in Time for the “Big Freeze”

Chief among those concerns are the profitability of North Sea production, and a decimation of renewable alternatives (for example, over a third of all jobs in U.K. solar have vanished).

The British end user, however, is going to feel the pinch in an additional way…

You see, in June 2017, utility giant Centrica plc announced plans to close the offshore Rough storage facility, which currently accounts for about 70% of all British natural gas storage capacity.

Immediately, the news caused a spike in winter-month natural gas futures prices, as fears of a natural gas shortage come winter began to swarm.

Fears that seem to have come full circle…

An Ill-Timed Outage

In the midst of the “big freeze,” Centrica announced a 12-hour outage at the Rough facility.

As a result, gas prices for immediate delivery more than doubled to their highest level in almost a decade as the arctic chill, and high snowfall levels drove up the demand for heat and electricity. In fact, demand for gas was so high last week that the National Grid Plc asked large industrial customers to scale back consumption.

“The closure of Rough has changed the landscape for U.K. gas storage. and today that landscape looks very bleak for major energy users such as U.K. manufacturing industry,” Mike Foster, chief executive officer of the Energy and Utilities Alliance told reporters. “Prices have rocketed, hitting British industry particularly hard. If supply is interrupted, it will be the industry that has to stop production to protect consumers and their heating needs.”

In previous years, Rough acted as a buffer for supply shocks like the U.K. is currently dealing with. In fact, the Rough facility was previously able to meet as nearly 10% of the nation’s daily peak winter demand.

But with its impending closure, Centrica now is only withdrawing gas that remains at the site, and even that process is subject to hiccups like they saw last week.

And that’s creating a knock-on effect.

You see, in the summer, U.K. demand for natural gas comes primarily from gas being pumped into storage for winter heating.

And that has introduced the second major post-Brexit energy move…

British Gas is Being Exported – Only to Be Reimported Again at a Premium

The dramatic change in cross-currency valuations following the Brexit decision has resulted in the U.K. exporting more natural gas to Belgium.

The “spare fuel” being exported is actually coming primarily from volume that would have gone to Rough for storage…

Except that the weaker pound means that it’s now more profitable to send the gas along the east-west North Sea pipeline to the terminal center at Zeebrugge on the Belgian coast instead.

However, just about all analysts agree that the rising exports from Britain to Europe are more a result of the collapse in currency value than the impending Rough closure. A Brexit-induced “pounding of the pound” has provided some nice profits for European importers… and Centrica has obliged.

But for the average Brit back home, hoping to heat their house during this year’s “big freeze,” the short-term future may require a traditional British stiff upper lip.

Now, due to its limited natural gas storage capacity, the U.K. has tried to counteract its supply woes with increased LNG imports from Norway, Qatar, and the U.S. In fact, the National Grid welcomed its first LNG import from the U.S. last summer, as this super-cooled fuel continues to find new buyers abroad.

But even that has come with its own set of challenges this winter.

Truth is, even with the influx of supply from the U.S., LNG imports have been scarce across Europe this season, as a surge in demand from China and other Asian counties have driven up the cost of this super-chilled fuel.

Which left the U.K. with little maneuvering room when the cold arrived last week.

In other words, we’re looking at a nasty cycle: today’s rising exports of British gas will go to European storage, with some of that returning as higher-priced imports when the weather gets colder.

Now, Britain isn’t suffering alone.

Gas prices in the Netherlands have surged to more than four times the levels it saw this time last year, according to data from the Pegas exchange, after demand rose there with the cold.

But this isn’t the first time that natural gas price shocks have left U.K. consumers out in the cold this winter. In fact, the market was roiled by an explosion at one of Europe’s major gas trading hubs combined with a major outage at the North Sea Pipeline just before the Christmas holiday.

The bottom line here is, as I mentioned back in 2016, the energy situation in the U.K. is quickly heading from bad to worse.

A predicament that has only intensified over the past 20 months since I first wrote about it.

Which only goes to show that a global “energy balance” is more imperative than ever.

And as the rest of the world slowly starts to catch up to what we’ve been saying, this means one thing.

The next few years will be brimming with “energy balance” plays.
