I’ve noticed recently that some people have been drawing the saxophone very inaccurately. Not necessarily the saxophone itself, but the person playing it. (I know how hard it is to draw the sax. Trust me, I’ve tried.)
1. Neck straps
I’ve gotta tell you guys; unless your character is absolutely RIPPED, I doubt that they’ll be able to carry the hunk of metal. The saxophone is heavy. And by that, I mean really heavy; especially tenors/baritones. So add some weight!! If you want to be a bit more accurate, don’t be afraid to add a little neck strap on there. Trust me, your character will thank me later. They’ve been saved from years of severe back pain.
2. Hand positioning
The hand positioning on this instrument is crucial as it well. The left hand always goes on top. This is because the palm and pinky keys are on the top left side of the instrument. Same with the right hand, but on the bottom right side.
3. Mouthpiece/blowing into the sax
Whenever you’re drawing a character blowing into the saxophone, do not draw them with their mouths puffing out. This is the same for all the other woodwinds as well. We want our air to be fast as possible, so having pockets of air in the way as we’re blowing isn’t as efficient/effective as we’d like it to be. So we try to avoid puffing out our cheeks as much as possible.
And that’s about it! Now go make your saxophone dreams come true!!!

Do you have a favorite instrument to play and/or listen to?
I do! I've played a lot of instruments, actually! I've been playing the flute since the fifth grade goodness, that's been nearly 20 years 😳 and the piano a few years longer than that. I love playing the flute in bands/community concerts or at church, but piano is something I do to relax, not perform (definitely haven't practiced it as much!) I also took some methods courses in college and got to play a few other woodwind and percussion instruments there. As a whole, my favorites to play are flute (and its related instruments), piano and alto sax (when I can get my hands on one), and my favorite to listen to is generally piano, although any instruments in a woodwind quartet have great solo/ensemble music as well!
And even though it's not technically an instrument, I really love singing, too!
Why tf am I so sentimental about my rental sax!? I got my own alto sax recently, before I was renting one for like, a full year now. Sunday is the anniversary. Like, it was a shitty horn, came with missing screws, but that was MY shitty horn! His name is Alberto! He kinda had bad tone and some missing screws, but we went to a parade together! We've traveled, we've soloed, and we've marched together! We played together for my first jam session! I told myself not to get too attached, but I did! Goodbye Alberto, we've done some crazy shit together, and I hope your next player loves you as much as I did! ♥️♥️♥️
