Do you have a favorite instrument to play and/or listen to?
I do! I've played a lot of instruments, actually! I've been playing the flute since the fifth grade goodness, that's been nearly 20 years 😳 and the piano a few years longer than that. I love playing the flute in bands/community concerts or at church, but piano is something I do to relax, not perform (definitely haven't practiced it as much!) I also took some methods courses in college and got to play a few other woodwind and percussion instruments there. As a whole, my favorites to play are flute (and its related instruments), piano and alto sax (when I can get my hands on one), and my favorite to listen to is generally piano, although any instruments in a woodwind quartet have great solo/ensemble music as well!
And even though it's not technically an instrument, I really love singing, too!
I’m so excited to share the first single of my upcoming album!! And this is also the first time I release music as a composer! (Ahh!) I would love love to have your thoughts!! Click on the link above to hear it 🤗 have a wonderful day :)
On the heels of finishing up two pieces for concert band, I have received funding from a consortium of five excellent tubists to write a piece for unaccompanied tuba. It will be based on the mystical, sometimes elusive fragments of the Greek philosopher Heraclitus.
I also just received a commission from the University of Texas at Tyler for a trumpet and piano piece, with the possibility of a…
If there is a musical instrument that fits Morpheus, it would be alto-flute. (perhaps this is partially me projecting my favorite instrument on one of my favorite characters, but whatever)
There’s something about the alto-flute that fits him so well. To me, flutes always have always sort of sounded and represented hope and freedom in my mind, they make me think of birds. Hope and freedom are often associated with dreaming.
Because of alto-flute’s lower register, their sound carries a weight that would fit Morpheus better than regular flutes. They can better illustrate his sorrow and responsibilities that weigh him down. The lower register also gives a better impression of his power than the higher would.
Flutes often have an almost seductive quality to them, and alto-flutes in particular I find to be very soothing. Seductive and soothing are both qualities attributed to Morpheus’s voice. Flutes have a very clear sound. With alto-flutes having the seductive, soothing, and clear qualities to them, along with the impression of a weighed down hope, it very much reminds me of Morpheus.
If anyone has never heard an alto-flute before, I would highly recommend listening to one.
Richard Burdick's Fourtitude Four for Four For #Flute, #altoflute, #oboe & #BassClarinet Movement TWO
This, the second movement of this work is a "bittersweet" sort of work, that features the oboe. It has many similar but mostly subtally all different phrases that go from soft to loud. Soft to loud like a saw-tooth shape.
