*puts on a different costume* trick or treat!!!
hello, mysterious new stranger! have a treat!
this was the original concept that i wrote down for this wip, which is creatively titled "gurathin"
[what if: that “i had nowhere else to go” trope, except mb is like “i’m turning to my worst enemy…” and gurathin is like “wtf i’m not your worst enemy get inside i’m calling an ambulance”]
i don't remember why i had that thought but it was funny and then i started writing it and it was still funny but also Dramatic. it's like, pretty close to complete, except i never figured out why Murderbot would have gotten stabbed on Preservation Station for reasons that didn't involve everyone on the station being VERY aware that it had happened, and obviously gurathin was gonna ask about that and i didn't have an answer. anyway. enjoy.
---
It’s late, and Gurathin has been sitting in this chair with a book open in his lap for a few hours now. He’s just thinking that it’s really probably time to go to sleep, as soon as he finishes the next few pages, when he’s interrupted by the gentle ping of a feed message reaching his augment. SecUnit: Can I come in He frowns, and glances towards the door to his apartment, although he’s in his bedroom and there are a few walls in the way. He knows SecUnit doesn’t need the rest period that most of the station is taking right now, but it usually spends this time in its own room, watching serials in its head or whatever else it does to keep busy. The fact that it’s out and about could mean nothing, but nonetheless, it’s…worrying. Gurathin: Are you outside? It’s the middle of the night. SecUnit: I know SecUnit: I don’t want to wake Mensah up SecUnit: But I kind of need help He drops his book onto the chair behind him without marking his place. Gurathin: I’m coming. When he pulls open the door to his apartment, SecUnit is outside, leaning against the corridor wall. Not casually—more like it needs the support if it’s going to stay on its feet. It has one hand bracing it upright and the other pressed to its side. There’s something on the side of its face that looks like blood. “Did you murder someone?” Gurathin says, and then sees the dark drops on the floor and the dark wet sheen on its hands and its shirt where it’s holding its side. “For the love of—What the fuck happened? Get inside.” It tries to push itself away from the wall, and sways. Gurathin grabs its elbow and steers it through his door. It collapses against the wall again as soon as it’s inside. There’s a glazed look in its eyes, and its mouth is pressed tightly shut. Gurathin shuts the door. “I can’t fucking believe—Why aren’t you in Medical?” Did it actually murder someone? He can’t imagine why it would come to him, unless it’s trying to hide. “Not that bad….” SecUnit mumbles. It’s dripping a terrifying quantity of blood on his floor. He is not buying its insistence that this is okay. “What’s your performance reliability?” Its lips twitch, and he wonders if it just suppressed an automatic canned response. “Fine,” it says. That is not a good sign. “What is it?” he insists. It hesitates. “Seventy…” It sees his face, and reluctantly corrects itself. “Sixty-eight.”

Modesty Blaise turns 60!
Tumblr media
Today (May 13) is the 60th anniversary of the launch of one of the greatest adventure comic strips in history: Modesty Blaise. Created by Peter O’Donnell and initially illustrated by Jim Holdaway (though Enrique Romero drew it the longest; that’s a sample of his work, above), the strip ran until 2001. And O’Donnell also wrote a dozen novels based on the character between the mid-60s and mid-90s (the only good thing to come out of a farcical attempt at making a comedy film based on the strip back in 1966; the first book was based on POD’s original script for the film, which was pretty much ignored in favour of camp and musical numbers).
I’ve said before that all of this talk of a female James Bond makes me roll my eyes because that’s not necessary: Modesty Blaise fits every aspect that people want: she is never a damsel in distress (well, once or twice - but the people putting her in distress usually end up buried). She has so much agency she could open an agency. She has one of the strongest platonic friendships in fiction with her partner-in-crime Willie Garvin (Rule #1: no romance between them. Ever. They mean too much to each other for that and yes you have to read the strip or the novels to find out why). Although England is her adopted home, it is never established where she is from (Middle Eastern? Eurasian? Southeast European?) Even she doesn’t know, and when they tried to make her Italian (1966), American (1983) and full British (2004) for the films they flopped each time. So the diversity aspect is built-in.
One bit of trivia is MB was reportedly inspired by a kid POD encountered during World War 2 who was living on her own and apparently self-sufficient despite her age. Years later, he had that little girl grow up to eventually become crime boss-turned-secret agent Modesty Blaise. More trivia: O’Donnell also wrote historical fiction under the pen name Madeleine Brent.
The entirety of the 1963-2001 comic strip has been reprinted by Titan Books over the years, and the books can be hard to find sometimes. But if you’re looking for a strong female answer to Bond (played serious - ignore that 1966 movie), it’s still well worth seeking out.

writer questions! 4, 10, 15, 28, and 35 seem interesting!
8D thank!!
4. What’s a word that makes you go absolutely feral?
Most words that cannot be spelled phonetically. Cathedral is a huge one. I cannot pronounce it correctly and doubt I ever will lmao.
10. Has a piece of writing ever “haunted” you? Has your own writing haunted you? What does that mean to you?
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, as well as Dark Delicacies III: Haunted. Ironic considering the titles, but yeah. These aren’t my favorite books by any margin, but they’ve stuck with me over the years. Because of their messages, or simple nostalgia. Besides, who doesn’t love a good harmless scare every now and then? My own writing doesn’t really haunt me, unless it’s an unfinished fic I’ve lost passion for. It could be because of personal experience, certain engagement or lack thereof, or because another story is shouting at me louder than it is.
15. Do you write in the margins of your books? Dog-ear your pages? Read in the bath? Why or why not? Do you judge people who do these things? Can we still be friends?
Ohhh, I do. Sometimes post it notes if they’re nearby. I dog ear paper backs, not hardcovers. I was always taught hard covers were ‘worth more’ and while that’s a weird sentiment to impress upon a kid, it’s stuck with me. I used to read in the bath tub when I had one XD it was a huge soaking tub with a big tile section behind the tub for stacks of books and my stereo.
Nah, I don’t judge. If it’s your book, who cares? I’m usually just grateful to meet fellow bookwyrms~ My copy of the Spearwielder Trilogy by RA Salvatore is so worn and hammered both back and front covers have had to be taped back on, it’s missing one page entirely but I’ve read it so much I know what happens.
One odd thing I do is that I ‘rub’ the left side of the page with my right thumb. I roll the middle of the page while reading, which means many of my older books have odd wrinkles or worn sections in them. Some paper takes it easier than others, thankfully I read fast so I don’t wear out the pages except by multiple read throughs.
28. Who is the most delightful character you’ve ever written? Why?
OOF this is a hard one. I think my tops would be The Projectionist/Norm, although tbh Mike, Bonnie and Cade Yeager are close behind him.
We don't see a ton of Norm except for his audio tape, and ofc his level in the game. He's fun to write because he doesn't talk and while he's def got the potential to be as fierce and feral as Bendy, he's also more mature and able to help Henry in the MB series. I also just...love his design sm.
Mike is an easy answer--he had nothing but his name and eye color back when I wrote LB. It was fun building him from the ground up for the KGA.
Bonnie is my favorite animatronic, I love all the Bonnies actually. Mostly because his personality is based off my bratty little wabbit Hiccup who was with me through a lot. I miss him, but writing Bon helps me a lot.
Cade's just fun because we finally had a competent human in the bayverse. I liked Sam and Mikela but they were kids--Cade was a new dynamic esp bc he bonded to Optimus Prime, instead of how they typically matched Bee with a pet whooman. I also love smart characters that are also stupid. See, Mike Schmidt. Bless their hearts.
35. What’s your favorite writing rule to smash into smithereens?
The ‘first draft is the worst’ rule. Most of my chapters are written in one go, with little variations. At most I nudge entire scenes to later chapters. I write until I hit a word count near 10k, then drop it for a day, then read through it once or twice for spelling errors, then done. Reworking is how I stall out on so many projects. It’s also why I don’t plan writing in advance either.

Love Yourself
Magnus Bane / Alec Lightwood
Explicit
No Archive Warnings Apply
Summary:
A bath is next on his list, and as the water fills the tub, he takes the moment to check his messages. There are the expected ones from his parents and siblings that say happy birthday, and each and every one of them receives a thank you’d response before he reaches for the new bottle on the countertop with a bright blue bow on it and an inscription that reads “Love yourself!” in Magnus’ scrawl.
Alec Lightwood-Bane appreciates himself on his birthday.
Read on ao3, or down below!
Alec’s birthday has never meant much to him.
It’s not that he doesn’t appreciate the time spent with his family, or the amazing food Magnus procures for him, it’s just that… he isn’t interested in gifts, or celebrations. Being in the spotlight for so long is, frankly, a little embarrassing. He much prefers the attention to be quick and done with, than dragged on and stilted as it always ends up.
That’s not to say there aren’t things about his birthday he does like.
Because at midnight, on the dot, Magnus always makes it a point of showing him exactly how grateful he is that Alec was born. Adamant is he to always be the first to wish Alec a happy birthday, and graciously the last in the evening.
Not that Alec’s complaining. He’ll gladly spend the whole day hidden away in the confines of their room, being brought to the edge and back as a reward that he’s done absolutely nothing to deserve but exist. But to Magnus, that’s enough, and he’ll blissfully reap all the benefits that his husband is willing to shower him with.
So it’s with this expectation that he wakes up in the morning, a little sore but heavily satisfied from the night before. He pushes down the weight of obligation to reply to all the birthday wishes that are likely spamming his phone, because in only a few moments Magnus will realize he’s awake and bring him fully alert.
Only the seconds tick by, and nothing ever comes, because the bed is empty when he swipes his arm across it. Well, almost empty, save for the piece of paper the bends against the motion of his arm, a paper that he plucks from the sheets with his fingers.
Happy birthday, my love!
Breakfast is in the kitchen whenever you’re hungry.
I’ve left your gift in the bathroom,
enjoy some rest & relaxation.
MB
Rest and relaxation?
Quickly, he fumbles with his phone, sitting up and snagging it from it’s spot on the nightstand before he shoots a text to Magnus. Where are you?
The reply is almost immediate, as if Magnus was waiting for his message.
I’m gathering some ingredients in Morocco. Don’t worry, you have the whole day to yourself, I made sure to let everyone know not to bother you today. You can do whatever you like without pesky missions or siblings forcing you to celebrate your birthday at Pandemonium.
There’s an exciting twist in his stomach at Magnus’ words, before suspicion and doubt starts to creep in. A whole day just to himself? He hasn’t had one of those in years, and any opportunity for one nowadays usually involves Magnus as well, not that he’s ever minded.
But this… being alone, not having to worry about forcing a smile for all the birthday wishes from Shadowhunters at The Institute that are barely acquaintances to him, or the uncomfortable feeling of a cold sweat on his forehead that comes from the belief that he’s completely undeserving of all of his family’s gifts and ecstatic smiles. It’s relieving. He loves his family, as chaotic and stressful as they can be, he loves the thought they put into picking something out just for him, and most of the time the practical gifts they hand over to him are perfect. But even after all these years, he still doesn’t feel like he deserves any of it, like there are more important things for them to spend their resources on.
This doesn’t feel like that. This feels… freeing.
It’s with a slight pep in his step that he slips on a pair of boxer briefs and a shirt and heads to the kitchen, stomach already rumbling with the possibilities of what Magnus could have surprised him with today.
    ---
A bath is next on his list, and as the water fills the tub, he takes the moment to check his messages. There are the expected ones from his parents and siblings that say happy birthday, and each and every one of them receives a thank you’d response before he reaches for the new bottle on the countertop with a bright blue bow on it and an inscription that reads “ Love yourself!” in Magnus’ scrawl. The cap twists easily against his strength, and a quick sniff rushes a soothing wave over him. Clearly magicked.
As the bath continues to rise, he turns the bottle sideways and pours in a hefty amount, letting any residual anxiety or nerves for the day travel out of him before he toes the water and sinks into its warmth.
Baths are a luxury, in Alec’s mind. Showers are efficient, but a bath can be decadent and spoiled, filled with bubbles and oils and flower petals. That’s how he feels now, though the water is clear of bubbles, it feels good and the only thing that he can smell is the calming scents of Magnus’ magic that he can sense is fused into the mixture. Now that he’s thoroughly calmed and unbothered, though…
… he’s not really sure what to do next. Lightly, he pats the top of the water a few times, watches the ripples as they spread across the surface, and does it again. Maybe he should have put on music, or brought a book.
Maybe he should have just taken a shower.
No, no. Magnus made sure to leave the day obligation-free for him, he’s going to enjoy it!
How would Magnus enjoy his bath? Well, he knows how he  and Magnus would enjoy his bath. As well-intended as the baths Magnus always draws for him after tense missions always are, they all end the same way. With a sigh, Alec closes his eyes and tries to push those thoughts away.
Only, closing his eyes with thoughts of Magnus in his head brings forth images of the countless other baths they’ve shared. Images of Magnus between his legs, lathering up a loofah and swiping it slow across his taut muscles, working the soap into his skin with the flat of his palm. Magnus, with his gorgeous bronze skin wet with water as he bends down to work his hands around Alec’s cock while it hardens in his grasp.
He peeks an eye open and glances around the room, despite knowing nobody else is there, before smoothing a hand across his chest.
He imagines it’s Magnus, lets himself get lost in the fantasy of reminiscing. Slowly, he brings his fingers across the hairs of his chest, scraping his blunt nails against them the same way Magnus does, although the feel of it is innately different. It’s only a second until he’s coming into contact with a nipple, already peaking and sensitive as he brushes his fingers along it, taking the nub between his fingertips and twisting.
The moan he releases is low, quiet even in the emptiness of the room. It’s a precursor to what he knows is coming as he feels his hips shift up into the friction of nothing, an involuntary reaction to the pleasure that sparks from within. But he doesn’t stop. He continues to tweak and pinch as his other hand slides down his stomach, dips into the valleys of his abdomen, and with his eyes closed and visions of Magnus in his head, he remembers the appreciation that’s often lavished upon this part of his body.
Normally, he doesn’t pay it any mind. He doesn’t think about his body and what it looks like to others. He doesn’t train and exercise and stay fit for the benefit of anyone but himself and his duties. His self-worth isn’t developed from others, and he knows that’s not going to change.
But it’s his birthday, and he’ll be damned if he doesn’t feel a swell of pride for the way his hand glides over the toned muscles of his body. He likes the instinctive press of his fingertips into each valley, the way they rise and fall with every breath he sucks in when he thinks of Magnus ghosting kisses and tracing his tongue along each and every rune diligently. The feel of his own fingers just as appreciative and worshiping in this moment, the way his muscles ripple with the pleasure that courses through him as he focuses on his other nipple, all of it makes his cock bob against his lower belly with the need for attention.
So he gives in with as slow a motion as he can manage, running his fingers along the sharp edge of his hips and following them downwards to the tip of his cock. His bottom lip finds its way between teeth that bite gently, and he teases himself with light touches along the underside of his cock that’s already swollen and throbbing under the warm water. He knows he has all day, and he doesn’t want to take this too fast. He wants to relish in the feel of himself surrounded in the smell and feel of the mixture that swirls around each of his senses, wants to rut against his hand and play with himself while encased in the warmth of Magnus’ magic. But it’s becoming too much, too soon, and everything feels enhanced in the water of this bath.
There’s a fleeting wonder if Magnus laced this mixture with an aphrodisiac, but getting answers is the last thing he wants to do right now.
With a shuddered breath, he trails his hand lower, grasping gently at his balls and giving them a gentle squeeze, rolling them between his palms the way Magnus always does so expertly. His hands are clumsier where Magnus’ are purposeful, but in the heat of the water and the building pleasure, it all feels good -  amazing.
More thoughts of Magnus flood in, memories of his own cock twitching against Alec’s thigh as he fondles Alec and bites lightly at his nipple, every receptor in his body attuned perfectly to his husband. Even just imagining it now pulls from him another moan as he pinches his nipple harder, squeezes it between the rough edges of his nail to imitate Magnus’ teeth. It works, a little too much because the moan comes out of him louder than expected, though he doesn’t try to stifle it because nobody else is here, nobody else is listening.
When he finally grips his fingers around his cock, it’s with a deep grunt and the thrust of his hips that sloshes water up and over the sides of the tub.
He could come now, could push himself over the edge already with a few quick pumps.
But the Magnus in his mind from the night before shakes his head and grins up at him, and Alec finds himself indulging in the idea of holding off a little longer.
He loves balancing on the edge, loves the exhilaration of almost tipping over, only to be brought back and dragged down further. It’s different now than when Magnus does it, but effective in the tremor of desire that pulses through him.
Tentative is his thumb as he finally loosens his hold and swipes it over the tip of his cock, wet and shiny with the mixture of water and precome. Alec opens his eyes to see it, to stare down at the pad of his thumb swirling around the head, and his middle finger working small motions just under the ridge of it where the sensations seem to increase.
If he tries to picture it, he can almost see and feel Magnus’ tongue in that same spot, flicking over the junction and wracking Alec’s body with shivers that make his toes curl. It feels almost too good, it brings him too close.
One by one, his fingers curl around his length again, taking a slow stroke up and down in an even breath. He has to calm himself now, a different calm than the one Magnus’ concoction brings, because he’s wound himself up so tightly and despite his efforts to make this last, he’s not sure how much longer he can hold on.
But Magnus in his head is encouraging. He whispers all the dirty sort of things Alec loves to hear, things that took him a long time to work up the courage to ask for, the sort of things that would make him blush if he wasn’t already steeped in a warm bath of pleasure.
Touch yourself for me, Alexander. I want you to watch the way your cock slides in and out of your fist, so fucking hot for me, my darling.
Alec does just that, keeps his gaze firmly on the shape of his cock as it slides in and out of view with each shift of his hips that thrusts up into his loose fist. Heat twists low in his belly, the budding orgasm making itself known in the back of his mind as he remains transfixed on his cock. It almost feels like an out-of-body experience, like he’s watching someone else, like the body in front of him is not his own.
It only makes him appreciate it more, every curve and angle of his cock, the way it twitches when he admires it’s length, the way he sighs when he tightens his fist around it’s girth. He loves the way it looks against Magnus’ lips, inside of Magnus and against his skin. He loves the way it looks now a darkened pink against the white of his hands and shaky under the water.
More, Alexander.
“Magnus,” he hears himself whispering. It spurs him on, and the fingers that were playing with his nipples hastily leave their spot to descend lower, past his cock and down against the smooth ridges of his hole.
Just like that…
His legs spread of their own accord, and he feels himself sinking just a bit further into the water as he rubs his finger along his rim, toying with the idea of going further. He’s so close still, he can feel the muscles in his thighs tightening, burning, and can feel the way the flame flickers low inside with the need for release.
The sounds of his ragged breathing fills the space of the room, echoing back to him like a ghost of a lover, and he finds his eyes roaming his body with a heightened admiration. It makes him wish Magnus were here, that Magnus could see him and join in, that Magnus could see how good he looks right now.
Come, Alexander.
With a loud groan, he slips his finger past the rim and deep inside of himself until he’s finally pushed over the edge. Magnus’ name falls from his lips, a cry for the man he loves, the man who brings him this far gone without even being here, and with the spasm of his muscles he feels the short spurts of come that finally release him from their hold.
It takes everything left in him to not submerge himself into the still warm water. With limbs shaky from residual pleasure and exhaustion, he rinses himself off with a new stream of water and steps out of the bath to collapse on the bed, a wet, naked mess.
He knows Magnus would tut and magic him dry, he knows that Magnus doesn’t like Alec to sleep with wet hair, but Magnus isn’t here and it’s his birthday anyways so if there were any day to get away with it, it’s now.
With a final sigh, he let’s the slumber take him.
    ---
When Alec wakes up for the second time that day, it’s to a 2pm sun that sits high in the sky and warms the bed where the sunlight filters in. Temptation to go back to sleep seeps in, but Alec pushes it back and sits up with a sleepy moan. The pillow is soaked, and the blankets are still damp, so he makes slow work of setting them out to dry, refusing to rush since he’s still allowed the day to relax.
A book sounds good, Alec thinks, as he searches the tomes that fill up the bookcases and settles on something that has caught his eye a few times before. The couch sinks when he sprawls across it, and it’s after a few minutes of reading that he notices Chairman Meow hasn’t settled on top of him like he normally does.
It seems even the Chairman was no exception to Magnus’ birthday rules.
    ---
The hours pass quickly as Alec loses himself to tall tales of adventure, and it’s nearing 6pm when his stomach finally grumbles in anger.
A long stretch cracks the stiffness in his body from prolonged couch usage, and as he pulls out his phone to see what he can order for dinner, he opens up his messages.
True to his word, Magnus really did make sure nobody bothered him today.
And yet…
Alec sighs, running a finger through his messy hair. If he’s being honest with himself, he kind of misses the chaos that his birthday always brings him. Being alone was great, the perfect gift actually. But as much as he appreciated it -  and himself  - he kind of wants to spend the rest of the evening with those that he loves. Magnus, especially.
What are you doing?
His knee refuses to cease it’s bouncing from where he sits on the edge of the couch, but he doesn’t have to wait long for Magnus’ reply.
I was having a debate with a cat I just met about the benefits of leaving his mundane owner and joining the ranks of an all-powerful warlock.
Alec snorts and grins affectionately down at his phone when he texts back.
We have enough cats, leave the poor thing alone and come home. Dinner?
Your R&R birthday isn’t over! You’ve still technically got 5 hours.
I’ve had enough, I’d rather spend the rest of it with you.
Only with Magnus can he be so honest, and he feels his heart thud as he waits for the no-doubt sappy message in return.
Actually… The response comes in, and Alec raises a brow. I was sort of hoping you’d say that, because I had a backup dinner plan on reserve just in case. Make your way over to the East Village in thirty?
 I’ll be there.
     ---
When Alec takes that final step onto 1st Avenue and East 9th street, he’s met with a beaming Magnus who’s swaying on the balls of his feet, dressed as casually as he can be with dark liner and flecks of glitter that sparkle light from the setting sun. “Alexander,” he hums as Alec shuffles in to steal a kiss. “How was your birthday?”
“Better now,” Alec sighs against Magnus’ lips.
They’re pressed close in the middle of the sidewalk, and Alec doesn’t even care as he folds closer to Magnus’ heat. He’s normally not one for public displays that last more than a quick peck or hand-holding, but after all the effort Magnus must have gone through to ensure an absolutely uninterrupted birthday, he feels a bit sentimental.
“C’mon, let’s go inside.”
Alec groans a protest, but Magnus smiles a quick kiss to his lip and tugs him into the small restaurant. Before he can even ask if they can take the food to go, a hand from the booth at the end waves him over. It’s Izzy, excited with a wide grin, stuffed into the booth with the rest of his family.
When he turns to Magnus, there’s a shy smile and hopeful eyes. “Who is Alexander Lightwood-Bane without an immense love for his family, even when they drive him crazy sometimes?”
“Magnus,” he begins, but is cut off with the shake of Magnus’ head.
“They promised no gifts, just company. We were all hoping you’d be okay with this?”
Chest tight and eyes threatening to water, Alec leans down to press a light, meaningful kiss to Magnus’ forehead. “Yes, absolutely,” he responds, and Magnus claps his hands together and takes a step towards the table. “Wait!”
At that, Magnus turns with a perked brow. “Wait?”
“I— thank you, Magnus,” Alec says after a pause. “I love you, and I appreciate everything you did today.”
Magnus’ smile warms and alights inside of him the desire to properly convey the love he feels right now. “You’re very welcome, Alexander. Anything for you,” he murmurs and sneaks another kiss before pulling him towards the booth. “I’m glad you enjoyed your bath,” he tosses back with a wink.
Of course Magnus would choose the moment right before they slide into the booth packed with his family to clear Alec’s suspicions from earlier. There’s a question thrown out, something from his mother that he didn’t catch that only exacerbates the pink on his cheeks and the audible gulp he swallows.
“Oh, Alexander was just telling me he had a wonderful time by himself,” Magnus answers for him, resting a hand on his thigh under the table in secret.
Alec coughs. “Ah, yeah. It was… relaxing.” There’s silence as they wait for more, but Alec doesn’t know what more they’re expecting from him, so he finishes with a sincere, “Thank you guys. Truly.”
It seems it’s not only Magnus that brings forth the warmth in his chest, because as he takes in the smiles of all of his loved ones sitting here in the booth of his favorite burger place, he feels his heart swell.
He’s thankful to each and every one of them for respecting his solitude, through Magnus or not, and his gratitude is immense that they were able to show up last minute when he was finally ready to celebrate. Magnus’ hand on his leg is hot against his skin through the pants he wears, and the mischief in his eyes twinkling a promise for tonight, and all Alec thinks to himself is that he couldn’t have asked for a more perfect birthday.

tag me(me)
If you like, tag ten people you’d like to know better! I was tagged by the lovely @joi-in-the-tardis . thanks, darling!!! <3
Put your playlist on shuffle and name the first four songs.
Black Out Days - Phantogram Die Happy - Metric Tightrope - Janelle Monae That’s Alright - Laura Mvula
Grab the nearest book. Turn to page 23, line 27.
6. Is this pertinent character trait of the Victim offered by the Accused? (Evidence textbook)
Ever had a song or a poem written about you?
In one of my high school theatre productions, my two male costars made up a very clever song about me that went a little something like “I hate MB, I hate MB, I hate I hate I hate MB,” etc. etc. Not terribly insightful or catchy, but points for consistency, I suppose.
When was the last time you played air guitar?
In the car two days ago screeching out Queen with @tiffotcf , because yes, my voice AND my hands are a goddamn instrument!!!1!
Celebrity crushes?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sounds I hate/love?
Hate: When cups rattle in my car’s cupholder. THANKS I HATE IT
Love: Gonna have to steal Joi’s answer here and go with when you get a surprise laugh out of someone. Like when a happy laugh sort of wells up their throat and bursts out of them in escape, and they weren’t expecting it, so it’s a surprise to you both. I love that.
Do you drive, and have you ever crashed?
Yar, I drive, but I’ve never crashed, thank goodness. I’ve been in a fender bender or two, one of which was my fault (although I’m not too unhappy about it because in a weird little roundabout way it led to me dating my now-spouse!), but I’ve never been in any kind of serious accident (again, thank goodness!!).
Last book you read?
Nimona! Unless you don’t count graphic novels, in which case, I believe I last read Pushing Velvet. (I’m currently reading Heartland. I highly recommend it.)
Do you believe in ghosts?
Not really...? I have waffling ideas about what to believe re: the afterlife (or “afterlife” as the case may be), but ghosts and ghost stories don’t really factor in. There’s always a rational explanation for supposed ghost-phenomena, even if it takes a while to figure out that explanation. (I am, for example, still wondering about a strange occurrence with a seance a couple of us performed as kids. It always could have been a prank, but it would have been quite an elaborate one!)
Do you believe in aliens?
I believe in the possibility of them. (Is alien agnosticism a thing?) I don’t believe in alien abduction or alien-interference-in-early-history though. Just....no.
Do you like the smell of gasoline?
I do not.
Last movie you saw?
Colette. (Spoiler alert: It’s gay and it has a happy ending!!!!)
Do you have an obsession right now?
Pride. Just aside from my usual ongoing background-noise-obsession with my roster of favorites (Doctor Who, Steven Universe, etc.), I’m wrapping myself in the fluffy rainbow blanket that is Pride. GIVE ME GAY EVERYTHING

at sign @ History to Generation Next
Read about at sign or symbol as a noun
The at sign or at symbol (@) for the word (at), used for mostly example in email addresses to separate the profile username from the domain name and in internet social networking platforms before a username to send a message or comment to that user.
Tumblr media
at sign @
At sign @
The at sign @ is also commonly called the at sign, ampersat, apetail or commercial in English - and less often a wide range of other terms. The fact is that there is no any word in English for the symbol has led some writers to use the French arobase or the Spanish and Portuguese arroba - or to come up with new words such as asperand, ampersat - but none of them has great value achieved.
Originally it is an accounting and trade invoice abbreviation, meaning "at the speed of", and it was not included on the keyboard of the first commercially successful typewriters, but was on at least one 1889 model and the highly successful Underwood models of the "Underwood No. 5 "from 1900. It is now universally recorded on computer keyboards. In recent years, its significance has grown to the sense of "being on", "and" or "focused on", especially in email addresses and social media, especially Twitter. The brand is coded on U + 0040 @ commercial on.
at sign definition
The at sign (@), which stands for the word 'at', has become known worldwide for its use on internet e-mail addresses and Twitter names. Officially called it fixly an "asparagus", the at sign separates in the recipient's name from the domain name in email; for example [email protected]. A Twitter symbol The at sign is a prefix of the name of a member on Twitter; @Trump, for example, is the Twitter name of President Trump.
That little "a" with a circle around it that is found in e-mail addresses is usually called the "at" symbol. Surprisingly, however, there is no official, universal name for this sign. There are many dozens of strange terms to describe the @ at sign or (at) symbol. The at-sign is used on Facebook to "tag" someone in a message, When you "tag" someone in your Facebook message, their name is linked to your message and the message is displayed on both your Facebook page and yours.
AT Sign @ can refer to the following:
1.Abbreviation for advanced technology, AT is an IBM computer that was first introduced in 1984. The basic AT computer model included an 80286 processor, 256 k RAM and a 1.2 MB floppy disk drive. The AT was also available with 512 k RAM and a 20 Mbyte disk. Today, an AT-class system is any computer with a 16-bit, 32-bit or 64-bit system. Previous computers (8-bit) were known as PC / XT class systems. All new computers used today are considered AT-class computers and you are unlikely to encounter any previous computers. A PC / XT class computer can be identified if it uses the older 8-bit ISA expansion slot.
2.Ampersat, asperand, arobase, bee, at sign or at symbol is the name of the "@" symbol above 2 on an American keyboard. When describing an email address, this can be described as "support - at - computerhope - dot - com", which is the same as [email protected].
3. IBM includes support for this code page in the 5150 hardware, known as "IBM-PC", considered the first personal computer.
4. The operating system of this model, the "MS-DOS", also used this extended ASCII code.
5. Almost all computer systems nowadays use the ASCII code to display characters and texts. (275).
6. Before the @ Keyboard Standard
The origin of the symbol itself, one of the most graceful characters on the keyboard, is something mysterious. One theory is that medieval monks, looking for shortcuts while copying manuscripts, convert the Latin word for "direction" --ad - into "a" with the rear part of the "d" as the tail. Or it came from the French word for "at" —à — and scribes, striving for efficiency, swung the tip of the pen along the top and side. Whether the symbol originated from an abbreviation of "each bee" - the "a" is encapsulated by an "e". In history the first documented used in 1536, in a physical letter from Francesco Lapi, a Florentine trader, who used at-sign @ to designate units of wine called amphoras, which were shipped in large clay jars.
Brief history of ASCII code:
@ History tells us that the @ symbol came from the tired hands of the medieval monks. During the Middle Ages before the invention of printing presses, each letter of a word had to be transcribed by hand for each copy of a published book. The monks who performed these long, tedious copy jobs were looking for ways to reduce the number of individual strokes per word for common words. Although the word "om" is quite short at first, it was a generally enough word in texts and documents that medieval monks thought it would be faster and easier to shorten the word "om" even more. As a result, the monks placed the "t" around the "a" and created it in a circle that eliminated two strokes of the pen.
In US Standard Code for Information Interchange, or ASCII code @, was created in 1963 by the "American Standards Association" committee or "ASA", the agency changed its name in 1969 by "US National Standards Institute" or "ANSI" as it has been known since.
at sign @ This code stems from the reordering and expansion of the series of symbols and characters that were already used by the Bell company in telegraphy at that time.
Initially it only contained uppercase letters and numbers, but in 1967 the lowercase letters and some checkmarks were added, which is called US-ASCII, ie the characters 0 to 127.
So with this set of just 128 characters, standard was published in 1967, with everything you need to write in English.
Before the at-sign became a standard key on physical typewriter keyboards in the 1880s and a standard on QWERTY keyboards in the 1940s, the @ at sign had a long, somewhat about history of use around the world. Some claim that the symbol dates from the 6th or 7th century when Latin scribes adapted the symbol of the Latin word ad, meaning to, to, or in the direction of. The scribes, in an effort to simplify the number of pen strokes they used, created the ligature (combination of two or more letters) by exaggerating the ascending stroke of the letter "d" and bending to the left over the "a".
At Sign or At Symbol
The @ symbol tells the command processor to be less extensive; to show only the output of the command without executing it or instructions associated with the execution. When used, it is added to the beginning of the command, there is no need to leave a space between the "@" and the command.
When "echo" is set to "off", it is not necessary to use "@", since setting "echo" to "off" causes this behavior to become automatic. Echo is always set to "turn on" by default when the script execution starts. This is why "@echo turn off" is often used to disable echo without performing the disable operation.
echo extended
@ echo less extensive
Pause
When you enter @ filename.ext, SQL * Plus searches for a file with that filename and extension in the current default folder. If SQL * Plus does not find the file in the current folder, it searches for a system-dependent path to find it. Some operating systems may not support path search. Consult the originally platform-specific Oracle documentation for operating system for throughout specific information regarding operating system environment.
Another story tells that the @ symbol was used as an abbreviation for the word amphora. Amphora was the unit of measurement that determined the amount that was preserved by the large terracotta pots that were used to ship grain, spices, and wine. Giorgio Stabile was an Italian scholar and he discovered the @ at sign or at symbol in a letter written in 1536 by a Florentine trader named Francesco Lapi. It seems likely that an industrious trader has seen the @ symbol in a book that has been transcribed by monks using the symbol and has appropriated it for use as the abbreviation of the amphora. This also explain why it became in which purpose and common to use the symbol in relation to quantities of something.
How to make the @ symbol
Create the @ symbol on an American keyboard
To create the at symbol with an American PC keyboard, hold down the Shift key and press number 2 at the top of the keyboard.
To create the at symbol with an Apple keyboard, hold down the option key and press number 2 at the top of the keyboard.
Create the at-sign @ or at-symbol on a smartphone or tablet
To create the at symbol on a smartphone or tablet, open the keyboard, go to the section with numbers or symbols (sym), and press the @ symbol with your finger.
Create the @ symbol on keyboards outside the US
Generally Computer users in other parts of the world, as country such as Italy, can find the at-sign @ symbol on a different key. In the figure below, a keyboard key with the @ symbol is on the same key as the Ç and Ò keys. To use this key in keyboard, hold down the Alt-key and press the key with the at-sign or at-symbol on it.
Conclusion
The at-sign has become so widespread as a way to tag someone on social media that people started using it as a verb, with or someone, or "mention someone directly in a post." The verb is especially common in the sentence Don't @ me. This sentence nods to the function of the at signto tag users in messages. When a social media user says "don't @ me," he shares a potentially unpopular opinion and humorously asks those who disagree with them to refrain from responding, especially by putting them in an answer tagging. Someone who posts 'don't @ me' acknowledges that they have shared a controversial opinion and that they are likely to debate. This does not make me a signal of playful controversy instead of a serious request not to be @'d or atted (with a fairly general verb on Twitter).
Outside the internet, people use the at sign as an abbreviation for the word at in daily writing, usually with reference to times, dates and places of planned events (see you soon @ the restaurant @ 7 p.m.!).
Thanks for reading about at sign @. Please share it to others for spreading information and knowledge about writing.

MB&F brings back one their cool clock – Destination Moon. Created with L’Epée 1839, the new table clock comes with daring red accents. All the usual details can be found again in this imagination daring machinery. Check below the integral press release.
youtube
Reality sucks! In the 1960s, science fiction had us flying through the air on hoverboards and our imaginations soared, but we ended up with non-hovering boards with wheels on solid ground. Science fiction promised us 3D TV and engineers delivered, but we took one look, felt queasy and out they went. Science fiction filled our imaginations with elegant ovoid-shaped rockets that would fly us to the moon and beyond. Again engineers delivered, but the rockets, although eminently practical, ended up being straight, uninspiring cylinders.
Some things are best left to the imagination and MB&F’s Destination Moon does just that. It delivers just enough engineering for an eight-day clock looking like an exciting science fiction rocket from the 1960s, but with plentiful empty space allowing our imaginations to fill in the details.
Conceived by MB&F and built by L’Epée 1839, Switzerland’s premier clock maker, Destination Moon is the quintessential torpedo-shaped rocket of childhood dreams. But look more closely and you will see that its minimalistic form is evocative rather than definitive.
Hours and minutes are displayed on large diameter stainless steel discs with stamped numerals. While the legibility of the time display is not in question, focusing on the time rather than the spectacular, vertically-structured, open movement is likely to require deep concentration.
Developed specifically for Destination Moon, the architecture of L’Epée’s eight-day movement follows the basic design of a real spaceship. Power in a rocket comes from its base; the power for Destination Moon comes from the oversized winding crown in its base. The management and control systems of a rocket are above the power source; the same holds true for Destination Moon, which has a vertical regulator controlling precision below the time display, as well as a time-setting knob at the top of the movement. That eye-catching regulator with its animated balance is protected from cosmic radiation (and curious fingers) by a small panel of virtually invisible mineral glass.
In a further tip of the hat to childhood toys and fantasies, the horizontal circular plates in Destination Moon’s movement are perforated like Meccano components. Despite its ethereal openwork construction, at four kilograms (nine pounds) Destination Moon is no lightweight: its solid landing pods ensure that it will not easily be knocked off course (or knocked over).
And then there’s Neil: a smile-inducing, space-suited figurine forged in solid silver and stainless steel, magnetically attached to the ladder connecting the crown to the movement. Neil is the astronaut flying Destination Moon to exotic worlds, but more importantly, Neil imparts a childlike sense of wonder by putting man into the machine.
Destination Moon is available in 5 limited editions of 50 pieces each in black, green, blue and red, plus palladium (silver).
Destination Moon in detail
Inspiration
Destination Moon is a true collaboration between L’Epée 1839 and MB&F; the base concept originated with L’Epée movement designer and sci-fi rocket fan Nicolas Bringuet, who came up with the idea for the movement’s distinctive vertical architecture. Driven by passion, Bringuet designed the movement over one long, largely sleep-free, weekend. L’Epée then contacted MB&F wondering if some type of spacecraft might be designed around the movement and the project blasted off.
MB&F intern-designer Stefano Panterotto came up with the basic shape, however it initially looked too realistically rocket-like and that something magical was missing. Paradoxically, the answer to adding magic was in removing the skin of the rocket so it both looked more technical − helped by the perforated Meccano-like movement plates− and acted as a framework for the viewer’s imagination.
The real magic of Destination Moon is space; not the space of the cosmos above our heads, but the largely empty space that is Destination Moon. If the body of the rocket was completely covered, observers would see the rocket of somebody else’s youth, but because the rocket-themed desktop clock is in reality a largely empty, perforated frame, those viewing Destination Moon are each likely to see a slightly different spacecraft: the rocket of their own childhood rather than somebody else’s… Space isn’t empty; it’s filled by imagination.
Realisation
While designed by MB&F, Destination Moon was constructed by L’Epée 1839, Switzerland’s premier producer of high-end clocks. The concentric vertical construction of the eight-day movement was developed especially for Destination Moon, but it also draws strong parallels with MB&F’s recently launched Horological Machine No.7 Aquapod: while one is a spacecraft-inspired table clock and the other a jellyfish-inspired aquatic wristwatch, both feature movements comprising concentric vertical architecture and both are powered from their base.
Perhaps the crowning jewel of Destination Moon – its apogee if you will – is the small figure on the ladder at its base: Neil. Constructed of solid sterling silver with a stainless steel helmet and wearing a 1960s-style spacesuit, Neil brings a playful human element to the engineering of the Meccano-style openwork of the spaceship and its clockwork. Neil magnetically attaches anywhere along Destination Moon’s boarding ladder. Whether he is embarking to take off for an adventure in space, or disembarking for an adventure on the moon’s surface is up to the individual viewer’s imagination.
Clockwork
Power for Destination Moon comes from the massive crown in its base, which transfers power to the mainspring barrel via the boarding ladder. The eye-catching regulator is vertically positioned to allow for maximum appreciation and protected from curious fingers behind a panel of mineral glass.
Two stainless steel discs with stamped white numerals respectively indicate the hours (top) and minutes as they line up with the streamlined double-ended pointer above the regulator. The time is set by a central knob in at the very top of the movement.
The stability of the clock is ensured by the substantial weight of Destination Moon’s three landing pods.

L’EPEE 1839 – the premier clock manufacture in Switzerland
Dedicated to making high-end clocks, L’Epée has been a prominent Swiss Manufacture for over 180 years. Founded in 1839 by Auguste L’Epée in France’s Besançon region, the company originally focused on producing music boxes and watch components. The brand was synonymous at the time with entirely hand-made pieces.
From 1850 onwards, the Manufacture became a leading light in the production of ‘platform’ escapements, creating regulators especially for alarm and table clocks, as well as musical watches. It became a well-known specialist owning a large number of patents on exceptional escapements and the chief supplier of escapements to several celebrated watchmakers of the day. L’Epée has won a number of gold medal awards at international exhibitions.
During the 20th century, L’Epée owed much of its reputation to its superlative carriage clocks; for many, the clock of the influential and powerful, in addition to being the gift of choice of French government officials to elite guests. In 1976 when the Concorde supersonic aircraft entered commercial service, L’Epée wall clocks were chosen to furnish the cabins, providing passengers with visual feedback of the time. In 1994, L’Epée showed its thirst for a challenge when it built the world’s biggest clock with a compensated pendulum, the Giant Regulator, the making of which is celebrated in the Guinness Book of Records.
L’Epée 1839 is now based in Delémont in the Swiss Jura Mountains. Under the impetus of its CEO Arnaud Nicolas, it has developed an exceptional table clock collection, encompassing a full range of sophisticated clocks.
The collection is based around three themes:
Creative Art – first and foremost artistic models often developed in partnership with external designers as joint creations. These clocks surprise, inspire and sometimes even shock the most seasoned collectors. They are intended for those consciously or unconsciously looking for exceptional, one of a kind objects.
Contemporary Timepieces – technical creations with a contemporary design (Le Duel, Duet, etc.) and minimalist, avant-garde models (La Tour), incorporating complications such as retrograde seconds, power-reserve indicators, moon phases, tourbillons, chiming mechanisms and perpetual calendars.
Carriage Clocks – carriage clocks, also known as “officer’s clocks”. These historical models stemming from the brand heritage also feature their fair share of complications: chiming mechanisms, minute repeaters, calendars, moon phases, tourbillons and more.
All models are designed and manufactured in-house. Their technical prowess, combination of form and function, very long power reserves and remarkable finishes have become signature features of the brand.

MB&F – Genesis of a Concept Laboratory
Founded in 2005, MB&F is the world’s first-ever horological concept laboratory. With almost 20 remarkable calibres forming the base of the critically acclaimed Horological and Legacy Machines, MB&F is continuing to follow Founder and Creative Director Maximilian Büsser’s vision of creating 3-D kinetic art by deconstructing traditional watchmaking.
After 15 years managing prestigious watch brands, Maximilian Büsser resigned from his Managing Director position at Harry Winston in 2005 to create MB&F – Maximilian Büsser & Friends. MB&F is an artistic and micro-engineering laboratory dedicated to designing and crafting small series of radical concept watches by bringing together talented horological professionals that Büsser both respects and enjoys working with.
In 2007, MB&F unveiled its first Horological Machine, HM1. HM1’s sculptured, three-dimensional case and beautifully finished engine (movement) set the standard for the idiosyncratic Horological Machines that have followed – all Machines that tell the time, rather than Machines to tell the time. The Horological Machines have explored space (HM2, HM3, HM6), the sky (HM4, HM9), the road (HM5, HMX, HM8) and the animal kingdom (HM7, HM10).
In 2011, MB&F launched its round-cased Legacy Machine collection. These more classical pieces – classical for MB&F, that is – pay tribute to nineteenth-century watchmaking excellence by reinterpreting complications from the great horological innovators of yesteryear to create contemporary objets d’art. LM1 and LM2 were followed by LM101, the first MB&F Machine to feature a movement developed entirely in-house. LM Perpetual, LM Split Escapement and LM Thunderdome broadened the collection further. 2019 marked a turning point with the creation of the first MB&F Machine dedicated to women: LM FlyingT. MB&F generally alternates between launching contemporary, resolutely unconventional Horological Machines and historically inspired Legacy Machines.
As the F stands for Friends, it was only natural for MB&F to develop collaborations with artists, watchmakers, designers and manufacturers they admire.
This brought about two new categories: Performance Art and Co-creations. While Performance Art pieces are MB&F machines revisited by external creative talent, Co-creations are not wristwatches but other types of machines, engineered and crafted by unique Swiss Manufactures from MB&F ideas and designs. Many of these Co-creations, such as the clocks created with L’Epée 1839, tell the time while collaborations with Reuge and Caran d’Ache generated other forms of mechanical art.
To give all these machines an appropriate platform, Büsser had the idea of placing them in an art gallery alongside various forms of mechanical art created by other artists, rather than in a traditional storefront. This brought about the creation of the first MB&F M.A.D.Gallery (M.A.D. stands for Mechanical Art Devices) in Geneva, which would later be followed by M.A.D.Galleries in Taipei, Dubai and Hong Kong.
There have been distinguished accolades reminding us of the innovative nature of MB&F’s journey so far. To name a few, there have been no less than 5 Grand Prix awards from the famous Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève: in 2019, the prize for Best Ladies Complication went to the LM FlyingT, in 2016, LM Perpetual won the Best Calendar Watch award; in 2012, Legacy Machine No.1 was awarded both the Public Prize (voted for by horology fans) and the Best Men’s Watch Prize (voted for by the professional jury). In 2010, MB&F won Best Concept and Design Watch for the HM4 Thunderbolt. In 2015 MB&F received a Red Dot: Best of the Best award – the top prize at the international Red Dot Awards – for the HM6 Space Pirate.
MB&F + L’Epée 1839 Destination Moon MB&F brings back one their cool clock - Destination Moon. Created with L’Epée 1839, the new table clock comes with daring red accents.

Trello Vs Slack — Which is the best tool to Manage My Team?
Trello Vs Slack — Which is the best tool to Manage My Team?
Slack and Trello are two of the most popular software management tools used for managing projects, but there are a few major differences between them. Depending on the nature of your project, either one (or both) of these platforms could help make things flow more smoothly.
Slack vs Trello: which is better? To help you decide on which tool to use for your projects, I’ve laid out all the key information you need to know.
What is Trello?
The makers of the Trello app software describe the platform as a “collaboration tool”. It lets you know what is currently being worked on and who is working on it. The interface is fairly simple and consists of a large board with various cards and lists that let you see the progress of your project. Its primary use case is as a project management software and this is where it focuses its features.
What is Slack?
The Slack app is an instant-messaging tool for your company that serves as a hub for all your work-related communication. It consists of workspaces and channels that let you share files and talk to all members of your team, and vice versa. As well as group discussions, Slack can also be used for private discussions with one or more specific users.
Both tools are useful software for managing projects. Trello allows you to view the progress of your projects in one glance, whereas Slack focuses more on the communication between you and your colleagues.
If you’re looking for a quick way to track your project’s progress on their work, then Trello is your best option. However, if you want to be able to share important updates and files with your colleagues and create a place for discussion, then use Slack as a better alternative.
Trello Primary Uses, Organization, and Features
Trello is primarily used for project management and task management software, such as booking a group holiday or creating a new website. The default lists are ‘Things to Do’, ‘Doing, and ‘Done’, but you can rename the titles of these lists or add more if you want.
Each list allows you to add tasks in the form of cards, as well as appoint certain members to undergo that task. For example, if you’re booking a holiday and need to book flights, then you can assign that task to a specific person. Once that person is in the process of completing that task, they can move the card to another list to show they are working on it or have finished working on it.
You can also add a due date to the card so your team knows when a task needs to be completed by. This is extremely helpful for time tracking and deadlines.
The board can be viewed publicly, by certain members of your organization, or by all members. You can change your board’s visibility settings at any time. If you want to add new members to your board, then you will need to make your board public before inviting them.
Slack Primary Uses, Organization, and Features
Slack is primarily used as a software tool for communicating and sharing important files with your organization. The main use of the product is essentially a chat room and is designed to be used instead of email. This is useful as you can have access to all your project’s files and messages rather than having them spread across multiple platforms.
You can organize your communication into individual channels for specific members. Alternatively, you can have channels that are accessible to all members of your organization. If you need to have a private discussion with one or more of your colleagues, then you can do so using the Direct Message function.
Slack isn’t just limited to text-based discussions. It also offers video calls for you to speak to your colleagues face-to-face. You have the ability to share your screen during a video conference call for when you need to explain important information more clearly and directly. However, this function is only available for users of Slack’s Standard paid plan and above.
Although you can use slack as a great collaboration tool for communication it is not a project management app. It doesn’t have any features to track time or follow tasks for the project.
How They Handle Communication
Trello can be used for communication, but it isn’t as developed as other messaging software. Its primary focus is project management, so all communication happens around a specific topic, task or card. You can’t message another user privately, so you would need to use email or another platform for this.
Members of your organization can add messages to cards, which can then be viewed by all team members who have access to that board. As Trello isn’t best used for communicating with your team, I’d recommend using a different software like Slack.
Slack allows you to communicate with your entire team or individual members. Channels serve as chat-rooms for you to engage and speak to your team, and vice versa. You can also create channels for specific team members that only they have access to.
If you’d prefer to talk to your team in person, then there’s a video call option too. If you want a platform to engage with and talk to your entire team, then use Slack as a better option.
Overall Slack can be a huge time saver for communication, especially in remote teams.
Trello Cost
Trello has a free plan, as well as three paid ones. Since its a project management app pricing is usually set on the number of users registered in the team. The Gold plan costs $5 each month, the Business Class plan is $12.50 for each user per month, and the Enterprise plan begins at $20.83 per user every month. Discounts are applied if you pay annually.
Most tools in this space operate under the ‘Software as a Service’ model and will price on a ‘per user per month’ basis.
There are a few differences with each of these plans. As you’d expect, the higher-priced tiers give you access to more advanced features. The Standard version only lets you have ten team boards, one Power-up per board, and upload a maximum of 10MB per file.
The Gold plan provides you with three Power-Ups on your boards, larger file uploads (250 MB max file size), a custom emoji, extra stickers, and board backgrounds.
The Business Class and Enterprise versions boast a huge range of features. which are useful for managing especially big teams and projects.
Trello Business Class
Grants Gold Plan to all users in your team
Unlimited Team Boards
Unlimited Power-Ups
Collections (allows you to make groups of boards)
Priority email support (all emails to support team are answered within one business day)
Admin controls (Admins can control who can make boards, as well as see public and private boards in their team)
Bulk-add members through Google Apps (lets you add members to your board all at once)
Domain-restricted invites (allows you to restrict invites to just addresses at your business domain)
Deactivate members (team members can have their account deactivated without erasing their work)
Create outside observers (allows you to have board observers who can view board content but can’t edit it)
Bulk data export (allows you to export all of your team’s data in JSON or CSV for extra peace of mind)
Trello Enterprise
All features included with Business Class
Per-user licensing (lets you pay per user)
Pay via invoice
Single Sign On (for added security, the Enterprise plan supports SAML 2.0 SSO)
Slack Cost
Slack comes with four price options. There’s a free plan, as well as Standard, Plus, and Enterprise Grid.
Slack also operates as a ‘Software as a Service’ so you’ll see the familiar ‘per user per month’ pricing style here too.
The Standard plan costs $8 per month, whereas the Plus plan costs $15. If you choose to pay annually, then the monthly fee is reduced. Enterprise Grid’s pricing isn’t currently public, so you’d need to contact Slack directly if you’re interested in using this plan.
The free plan of Slack only allows you to view “10,000 of your team’s most recent messages” and also limits you to “10 third-party or custom integrations”. However, in the standard plan, you can do unlimited message searches and use as many integrations as you like.
The Plus plan gives you the same features as in Standard and also gives you features like compliance reporting, guaranteed uptime, and single sign-on.
Enterprise Grid grants you even more advanced features, like being able to send a message to anyone on the team who uses Slack, search through all workspaces, and use multi-workspace channels.
In terms of cost, Trello’s premium plans are less expensive. Their Gold and Business Class tiers are $5 and $12.50 per month compared to $8 and $15 each month for Slack’s Standard and Plus plans.
The cost of Trello’s Enterprise plan is $20.83 per user, whereas the price of Slack’s Enterprise Grid tier isn’t known unless you get in touch with them. As Slack’s other plans are costlier than Trello’s, it’s fair to presume that their most premium tier is also more expensive.
Trello Ease of Use and Interface
Trello is easy to use and doesn’t take much time to set up. The product designers have really put a lot of thought into the usability of the tool. You only need your email, name, and password to create an account. Once you’ve entered this information, you’re presented with your dashboard to create a new board or work on an existing one.
The interface is straightforward to navigate task management software. It doesn’t take too long to get to grips with. Lists and cards can be added, moved, and edited with ease.
In the upper right-hand corner of your dashboard where your initials are, you can access your settings, profile, cards, activity, keyboard shortcuts, and more. Additionally, you can change the initials icon to a photo, as well as tweak your notification settings. There’s also a ‘Color Blind Friendly Mode’ for color blind users.
As an easy to use task management and project collaboration tool, it really excels.
Slack Ease of Use and Interface
Slack is fairly simple to set-up and easy to use. Again it’s another product that has a lot of love and care put into the user experience design. To join a workspace, all you need to do is enter the name of the workspace you were invited to and you are set up in no time. After that, you have access to all of your team’s channels.
Creating a workspace is also easy. You signup using your email and then enter the verification code sent to you. Next, you enter in the name of your company and the project your team is working on. You can then add some of your team members to the channel using their email addresses. That’s all there is to it.
Once you have access to your workspace, you can create various channels for your team or use the premade ones. You can also send private messages to members of your team by clicking on the ‘+’ icon next to Direct Message.
Pressing on your name at the top of the left-hand side of the page opens up a plethora of options, like your Profile & account and Preferences. You can change your name, bio, photo, and contact information in Profile & account. Additionally, you can set a status to let members of your team know your current availability.
Using the channels is simple. You can pin messages which places them at the top of the channel to make them more visible to your team members. This is useful when you have an important update for your team. You can also look at the highlights of the channel, such as the most popular posts or latest file uploads.
Slack’s interface is a little more complicated than Trello as the product has more options and features, but it shouldn’t take too long before you get the hang of how things work.
Despite being a little less straightforward to use than Trello, Slack is definitely the better platform for communicating with your team.
Trello Reliability
Trello is an extremely secure software product. Its primarily a task management software so downtime will likely have big consequences to productivity. They are SOC2 Type 2, PCI-DSS, Privacy Shield, and ISO/IEC 27001 certified. They run automated vulnerability scans every 7 days and penetrations tests annually. In addition to this, the system undergoes a full encrypted backup every 24 hours.
The platform “uses Transport Layer Security to create a secure connection using 128-bit Advanced Encryption encryption. This includes all data sent between the web, desktop, iOS, and Android apps and the Trello servers”. The list for the company’s security operations is huge, and there are many practices they undergo to ensure the safety of their software.
For users of Enterprise and Access, SAML 2.0 SSO is used for added security. With an uptime of 99.93%, the platform is very reliable and doesn’t suffer from much downtime, except for scheduled maintenance. This means you don’t need to worry about the platform being unavailable for extended periods of time.
Slack Reliability
Slack is also a very secure product. They are SOC 2 Type 2, SOC 3, ISO/IEC 27001 (and 27017), and Privacy Shield certified, among others. Slack uses reputable security firms to run frequent audits of their tools to check for any vulnerabilities. They run constant automated scans of their web platform too and all employees of Slack are background checked.
Slack uses the latest most reliable cipher suites and protocols to encrypt all traffic in transit. Their Customer Data is encrypted at rest. Users of Slack’s premium plans have access to more advanced security measures, but even the free tier of the platform is very secure.
For the last quarter, Slack has an uptime of 99.99% and rarely have any issues with their servers.
Both software are both equally secure, so you don’t need to be concerned about the safety of your data and files on each platform. Slack’s reliability is slightly better with an uptime of 99.99% as opposed to Trello’s 99.93%. However, the difference is so marginal that I don’t think it’s a point to use one platform over the other.
Integrations with Other Tools
You can integrate Trello with various other software tools to maximize its efficiency and productivity. Some of these software tools are Zapier, IfThisThenThat, Asana, and Slack.
Slack can also be integrated with various software tools, including Zapier, IfThisThenThat, Giphy, and Marker. Both Trello and Slack have free APIs for you to integrate your own custom apps with the tool.
Currently, Trello only allows integrations with apps for members of their paid tiers. Slack, on the other hand, offers 10 integrations with apps for users of their free plan. Premium tiers have access to over 100 app integrations.
Using Slack and Trello together is extremely beneficial as they both bring advantageous software tools to your team and project. Trello can be used to help you track and check the progress of your project, while Slack can be used to communicate with and update your team. Instead of using one tool over the other for managing your team, I’d recommend using the both of them.
Platforms Available
Trello is currently via the company’s website, as well as an app for Windows, macOS users, Android, and iPhone users.
Slack is also available on all of these platforms. This means they’re both very accessible for teams. The Android and iPhone apps for Slack and Trello are very handy as don’t need to be in front of a computer to track your project’s progress or update your team about important matters.
Customer Support
Trello’s customer support work fairly quickly to help your concerns and queries, but priority is given to users with premium plans. To speak to an advisor, you need to fill in a form on the ‘Contact Support’ page.
The form asks for your name, email, the topic, and the subject of your question. You can then write a brief description of your query, as well as include any relevant files. There’s also an option to grant the customer advisor temporary access to your account.
If you want a quicker response to your problem, you can use the Community Support forum. There you can post your query for other members of the community to assist you with.
In contrast, Slack’s customer support is limited to just advisors of the company. They don’t currently have a community forum. To contact a Slack advisor, you fill in a form on their ‘Contact Us’ page. You enter in the subject of your query, as well as the description and any relevant files.
Users of Slack’s Plus and Enterprise Grid tiers get 24/7 support, as well as a swift response time (within 4 hours).
Trello has better customer support overall as you can use the Community Support forum to get a quicker response to your enquiry. However, with more advanced tiers, you can expect a response from an advisor within 1 business day, which is slightly longer than Slack.
Conclusion
Slack vs Trello is not really the question you should be asking, both are useful collaboration tools for managing your team and your projects. Trello shines with helping you track your progress with a project, while Slack is better used for communicating with your team.
Trello’s interface is easier to navigate, so if you’re not tech-savvy, this might be ideal. Although Slack is a little more complicated to use, it shouldn’t take you long to get to grips with the tool.
In terms of cost, Trello and Slack both have free plans that work well for small companies. For larger teams and projects, I’d recommend using one of the paid tiers they offer. Trello is slightly cheaper overall, but is a little less reliable with its uptime.
Security wise, there isn’t much difference between the two services as they are both use advanced safety practices to protect you and your data. Trello does have better customer support as you can access a community forum to help you get a response to your query quicker. Slack doesn’t currently have this feature.
The two platforms have a free API for custom apps and can be integrated with a plethora of tools for maximum efficiency. They are both available for Windows, macOS, Android, and iPhone.
So, which platform do I recommended for managing your team? Overall, I think Slack is the better choice as you communicate with all of your team and share important documents. While Trello is excellent for tracking your project, you would need to use another tool for communication.
As Trello and Slack can be integrated with one another, I’d advise you to use both of the platforms instead of substituting one over the other. They work excellently in unison and allow you to speak to your entire team in one place and manage the development of your project.

Description of An Introduction to
Behavioural Ecology
This brief introduction describes the organization and contents of our book. The book is about the survival value of behavior. We call this subject 'behavioural ecology' because the way in which behaviour contributes to survival and reproduction depends on ecology. If, for example, we want to answer the question 'How does living in a group contribute to an individual's survival?', we have to start thinking in terms of the animal's ecology; the kind of food it eats, its enemies, its nesting requirements and so on. These ecological pressures will determine whether grouping is favoured or penalized by selection. Behavioural ecology is not only concerned with the animal's struggle to survive by exploiting resources and avoiding predators, but also with how behaviour contributes to reproductive success. Much of the book is therefore about competition between individuals for the chance to reproduce and pass on their genes to future generations. The book emphasizes the theoretical background of each subject discussed, but we prefer to illustrate the theory with examples after a very brief general introduction, rather than developing long, abstract, theoretical arguments. Although none of the ideas we have used is difficult to understand we have placed some of the more complicated arguments and details in boxes which can be ignored if the reader is in a hurry. Chapter 1 is a general introduction to the book, in which we distinguish between different kinds of questions that one can ask about behaviour. In particular, we emphasize the difference between questions about survival value or function and those concerned with causal mechanisms. We show that natural selection should favour individuals who are best able to propagate their genes to future generations. In Chapter 2 we discuss how to test hypotheses for the adaptive advantage of behaviour. One method is a comparison among species.  The rationale here is that differences between species in behaviour can be correlated with differences in their ecology. From these correlations, inferences can be drawn about the adaptive significance of behavioural traits. We illustrate this approach with reference to social organization in weaver birds, antelope and primates. The second method is to perform experiments, for example, to change behaviour and measure the consequences this has for the individual's chances of survival and for its reproductive success. In Chapter 3 we focus on the individual. Animals are viewed as making 'decisions' between alternative courses of action and the decisions can be analyzed in terms of their costs and benefits. A powerful tool in this approach is the optimality theory, which allows us to test hypotheses about the importance of various costs and benefits by predicting their effects on the animal's decision rules. By considering the basic decisions underlying behaviour patterns, we show how the same models can be used to understand what at first sight seem very different problems, such as feeding and searching for mates.  Chapter 4 looks at decisions over evolutionary time, and how these change during arms races between predators and prey, and brood parasites and hosts. In the next three chapters, we consider how individuals should behave when they have to compete with others for scarce resources such as food, territories or mates. We discuss how competitors should be distributed in relation to resource distribution and abundance  (Chapter 5) and the costs and benefits of living in groups (Chapter 6). In Chapter 7 we introduce the idea of game theory as a technique for analyzing how individuals behave in contests for resources. Chapters 8, 9 and 10 are concerned with sexual reproduction. A consideration of the basic differences between males and females leads to the idea that members of one sex (usually male) may compete for access to members of the other (Chapter 8). This is the theory of sexual selection. The differences between male and female also suggest that the interests of the two sexes during reproduction often differ (the theory of sexual conflict). Chapter 9 discusses how these battles within and between the sexes are influenced by ecology. Here we rely heavily on the comparative approach, correlating differences between species in sexual strategies with differences in ecology. From differences between species, we turn to differences between individuals (Chapter 10). We introduce the idea that different individuals within a species sometimes adopt different sexual strategies. These differences may be related to age or size, or they may simply be equally profitable, alternative, ways of achieving the same end. In Chapter 11 we examine how altruistic behavior can evolve. We then illustrate the theoretical arguments with reference to 'helpers'; individuals that help others to rear young instead of producing their own. Chapter 12 deals with birds, mammals and fish, and Chapter 13 is devoted entirely to the social insects, where helping reaches its most sophisticated level of development. Many of the earlier chapters refer to communication as a behavioural mechanism of competition for resources and social interaction. In Chapter 14 we tie together these threads in a general discussion of animal signals. We follow the pattern set in earlier chapters by considering both ecological constraints and intraspecific selection pressures. In the final chapter we reassess the view that the survival value of behaviour can be understood within a neo-Darwinian framework using methods such as optimality models and game theory. Finally a word about the style of presentation. We generally use convenient and informal shorthand rather than traditional formal scientific style. A phrase such as 'Offspring are selected to demand more food than the parent wants to give' is short for 'During the course of evolution selection acting on genetic differences in the begging behaviour of offspring will have favoured an increase in the intensity of begging. This increase will have been favoured to the extent where the level of begging by any individual offspring exceeds the optimum level for the parent'. Some readers may wonder whether our informal shorthand, together with catchy descriptive labels for various behaviour patterns such as 'manipulation' and 'sneaker', is a sign of sloppy thinking. There is no doubt that loose terminology can indicate imprecise thinking and half-formulated ideas. But it is equally easy to conceal woolly arguments behind an obfuscating screen of scientific jargon. We have used a simple direct style in order to make our arguments clear and not because behavioural ecology is woolly subject. This point is nowhere better illustrated than by George Orwell in his brilliant essay 'Politics and the English Language' (1946). He translates the following well-known verse from Ecclesiastes into modern English: 'I returned and saw under the sun, that the race is not always to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.' And now the translation. 'Objective consideration of contemporary phenomena compels the conclusion that success or failure in competitive activities exhibits no tendency to be commensurate with innate capacity, but that a considerable element of the unpredictable must invariably be taken into account. 'This translation is not only tired and ugly, lacking the fresh, vivid imagery of the biblical passage, but it replaces precise illustrations with woolly generalization. While we cannot hope to emulate the clarity and brilliance of the writer of Ecclesiastes, or indeed of George Orwell, we hope we have avoided the worst excesses of the Orwellian parody and presented our ideas in simple but precise language.

Evernote Reaches the Cloud: Migration to Google Cloud Platform Complete
Back in September, we announced that Evernote would be migrating to a modern, cloud infrastructure. We lost no time in getting started. Just one month after the announcement, we were already moving data to the Google Cloud Platform. We’re excited to announce that Evernote has successfully migrated our service to the cloud, and accomplished this with minimal impact on our customers.
Because this migration took place in the background, you wouldn’t have noticed any changes to your day-to-day experience in Evernote. For engineers who understand the technical complexities involved with moving large amounts of data into the cloud quickly and safely, Evernote’s migration to the cloud was monumental.
What we did
To borrow from the analogy of moving to a new house: At first glance, Evernote’s new home in the cloud may not look all that different, but it’s built on a much stronger foundation, sits on a larger lot, comes with new plumbing, and even has an upgraded alarm system. Overall, it’s a much better place to live.
Rather than pouring resources into the day-to-day maintenance of equipment and software required for running the Evernote service, we can now focus more of our time and energy into responding to customer needs. Though subtle at first, this move to the cloud will bring about more noticeable benefits in the not-so-distant future, such as increased uptime, security improvements, and faster delivery of new and innovative features.
What we achieved
Although every engineering endeavor is different and encounters unique challenges, cloud migration efforts of this magnitude usually take longer than expected (9-12 months) and consume more resources than originally estimated.
Driven by our commitment to minimizing disruptions to your service, we did it in just 70 days. In this short time frame, we successfully moved 5 billion notes and 5 billion attachments over to our new cloud-based infrastructure. That’s over 3 petabytes of data. To give you some context, that’s equivalent to moving enough content to fill up 10+ copies* of all the books ever published in all of modern history.
Although no physical moving vans or boxes were required, Evernote took extreme precautions to ensure that all the data was packaged properly, systematically organized, and safely transported. We started by transporting just a few items at a time, then moved more data over once we were 100% certain it was safe to do so.
A faster, more reliable Evernote
So what benefits can you expect to see once we’ve completely settled into our new home in the cloud? For many, Evernote is an extension of their minds, so security has always been of utmost priority. With encryption at rest and improved disaster recovery planning, we can provide an extra layer of protection for your thoughts and ideas.
It’s common practice to encrypt data when it’s being transferred from one place to another so it can’t be read, even if it’s intercepted. The concept of ‘encryption at rest,’ however, means that your data is protected, even when it is not being moved anywhere. Disaster recovery planning ensures that we are better equipped to restore the Evernote service smoothly and quickly, in the unlikely event of a major disaster.
What’s next?
Now that we’ve hit our audacious goal and reached the cloud, we’re already putting these advantages to work. Stay tuned for more news as we build the next generation of Evernote—one that will help you get more done with speed, security, and peace of mind.
For more technical details about how we achieved the cloud migration, visit the Evernote Tech Blog »
* Note: There have been approximately 150 million books published in the modern world. Each book would take 2 MB of computer space to store. All books published in the modern world = 300 million MB = 0.3 PB. We moved 3 PB. This is equivalent to moving an estimated 10x the number of books have ever been published in all of modern history.
If you have any questions, we invite you to visit the Evernote Forum, where members of our technical team will be available to answer your questions and comments.

Description of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Nearly twenty years ago one of us (S. P. D., soon joined by G. H. S.), began a distillation of the elements of biochemistry into an alphabetical arrangement. The task was formidable and eventually other editors were recruited, an editorial board was established, and now the work is offered as the Oxford Dictionary of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. It is hoped that the dictionary will serve the needs of the research biochemist or molecular biologist, as well as teachers of the subject and their students. In addition, it should prove of value to practitioners of other fields of study or work seeking the meaning of a biochemical term. An important function of a dictionary is to provide guidance on current usage in the field within its scope. The original 12-volume Oxford English Dictionary was compiled from about five million slips of paper bearing sentences or phrases extracted by some thousands of 'readers' from classical works of literature and those of the best contemporary authors. It was thus firmly based on good usage. In scientific subjects, specialist terminology is often codified in sets of recommendations regarding nomenclature, meaning, abbreviations, symbols, and so on. These have been agreed by international commissions (e.g. those of The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry and The International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) as a means of preserving  order and facilitating communication between scientists. We have striven to conform as far as possible to the relevant international recommendations, but in some cases, where usage so frequently diverges from a recommendation that adherence to it would seriously detract from ease of use of the dictionary, we have kept to the principle that the dictionary should reflect usage (see the definitions of lexicographer). This does not extend, of course, to cases where usage, however widespread, contradicts sound scientific principles. The internationally agreed recommendation is always also listed. The various compilations of these recommendations that have been drawn upon are listed in Appendix B, together with a number of other sources of information on nomenclature. Biochemistry is the discipline that embraces the study of the structure and function of life-forms at the molecular level.  Molecular biology is a closely related discipline that originates in the study of DNA and its metabolism, and now embraces all those investigations that exploit the technology that has resulted from this work. Both disciplines aim to explain the behavior of life-forms in molecular terms, and are soclosely interrelated that separation is barely possible. It is inevitable that the content of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is to a degree arbitrary, but it is hoped that all important aspects of these subjects have received consideration. The compilers have attempted to offer a broad coverage of terms encountered in the literature of biochemistry and molecular biology by including an appreciable number from cognate sciences. Although the compilation is designed primarily to serve readers of contemporary material, the needs of those who turn to older literature have also been borne in mind. Some of the entries thus have a historical flavor, some obsolete terms are included (e.g. Zymase), and in some cases a historical approach has been used as the best means of presenting an explanation of a term, as for example in the case of the entry for gene. The value of a scientific dictionary is enhanced by inclusion of contextual information as well as mere explanations of meaning or terminology. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology will be found to have some of the attributes of an encyclopedia, although the extent to which it veers in this direction has varied with the whim of its compilers. It is our hope that in a single volume the reader has easy access to basic definitions as well as a generous helping of other information.  In the present-day world, we are assailed by floods of 'information'. It has been suggested that the average weekday edition of a newspaper of record (e.g. The New York Times) provides more information than Shakespeare and his contemporaries would have acquired in a lifetime. With the availability of much information through the Internet, it may be asked whether a dictionary in paper form is actually necessary. In answer, we note that the Internet can be slow, and is not readily accessible in some parts of the world; the databases may be inadequate, and although usually very up-to-date, the high cost of their maintenance restricts them to specialized knowledge in a limited number of fields. Moreover, books have a quality of their own, which is enabling them to maintain their popularity. It appears that the increasing use of the Internet is actually paralleled by the rate of publication of printed dictionaries; in an information-hungry age, there cannot be too many sources of good-quality information.

GET THIS BOOK Author: James Kraft, Lawrence Washington Published in: Chapman and Hall/CRC ISBN: 978-1138-0-6347-1 File Type: pdf File Size: 3 MB Language: English Description Number theory has a rich history. For many years it was one of the purest areas of pure mathematics, studied because of the intellectual fascination with properties of integers. More recently, it has been an area that also has important applications to subjects such as cryptography. The goal of An Introduction to Number Theory with Cryptography book is to present both sides of the picture, giving a selection of topics that we find exciting. The book is designed to be used at several levels. It should fit well with an undergraduate course in number theory, but the book has also been used in a course for advanced high school students. It could also be used for independent study. We have included several topics beyond the standard ones covered in classes in order to open up new vistas to interested students. The main thing to remember is number theory is supposed to be fun. We hope you enjoy the book. The Chapters. The flowchart (following this preface) gives the dependencies of the chapters. When a section number occurs with an arrow, it means that only that section is needed for the chapter at the end of the arrow. For example, only the statement of quadratic reciprocity (Section 13.1) from Chapter 13 is needed in Chapter 14. The core material is Chapters 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 11, along with Section 13.1. These should be covered if at all possible. At this point, there are several possibilities. It is highly recommended that some sections of Chapters 5, 7, 9, and 12 be covered. These present some of the exciting applications of number theory to various problems, especially in cryptography. If time permits, some of the more advanced topics from Chapters 14 through 20 can be covered. These chapters are mostly independent of one another, so the choices depend on the interests of the audience. We have tried to keep the prerequisites to a minimum. Appendix A treats some topics such as methods of proof, induction, and the binomial theorem. Our experience is that many students have seen these topics but that a review is worthwhile. The appendix also treats Fibonacci numbers since they occur as examples in various places throughout the book. Notes to the reader. At the end of each chapter, we have a short list of Chapter Highlights. We were tempted to use the label “If you don’t know these, no one will believe you read the chapter.” In other words, when you finish a chapter, make sure you thoroughly know the highlights. (Of course, there is more that is worth knowing.) At the end of several sections, there are problems labeled “CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING.” These are problems that check whether you have learned some basic ideas. The solutions to these are given at the ends of the chapters. You should not leave a topic until you can do these problems easily. Problems. At the end of every chapter, there are problems to solve. The Exercises are intended to give practice with the concepts and sometimes to introduce interesting ideas related to the chapter’s topics. The Projects are more substantial problems. Often, they consist of several steps that develop ideas more extensively. Although there are exceptions, generally they should take much longer to complete. Several could be worked on in groups. Computations have had a great influence on number theory and the Computer Explorations introduce this type of experimentation. Sometimes they ask for specific data, sometimes they are more open-ended. But they represent the type of exploration that number theorists often do in their research. Appendix B contains answers or hints for the odd-numbered problems. For the problems where the answer is a number, the answer is given. When the exercise asks for a proof, usually a sketch or a key step is given. Computers. Many students are familiar with computers these days and many have access to software packages such as Sage, Pari, or various commercial products that perform number theoretical calculations with ease. Some of the exercises (the ones that use numbers of five or more digits) are intended to be used in conjunction with a computer. Many can probably be done with an advanced calculator. The Computer Explorations are definitely designed for students with computer skills. Acknowledgments. Jim Kraft wants to thank the Gilman School for its generous support during the writing of An Introduction to Number Theory with Cryptography book and his students Rishi Bedi, John Chirikjian, Anthony Kim, and John Lee, whose comments helped make this a better book. Many thanks are also due to Manjit Bhatia, who made many very useful suggestions. We both want to thank our many students over the years who have taught us while we have taught them. An Introduction to Number Theory with Cryptography book would not have been possible without them.
