MK12 has been out for a while now, but I'll throw spoilers under the cut anyway. Long story short, I did not care for the last third of the story. Longer story below the cut.
I was pretty engaged in the first two acts, or at least the first half.
Shang Tsung's new backstory is great, a con-man elevated by "Damashi" with promises of power and greatness. Sorcery combined with alchemy and a claw weapon reminiscent of Scarecrow is top notch. Plus, Alan Yee channels Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa's smarmy deviousness excellently.
Glad Kronika is never coming back
Kung Lao's intro chapter was fine. I like the new status quo with him and human Raiden. Madame Bo is fun (hope she becomes a kameo). The Lin Kuei test was good.
Human Raiden is serviceable but boring.
Johnny is a mixed bag. On the one hand, he gets some of the funniest lines of the game and the Johnshi bits were excellent. The development of their friendship was top notch. On the other hand, he leans way too heavily into the younger Johnny we saw in the 2nd timeline. When Cristina was introduced I was like, "Whoa! Johnny has a new love interest? What's the story there?" But after she leaves, they don't do anything with her. They get divorced off screen, and I feel like that hurts Johnny's story. Some of his intro dialogues are borderline "fuck my ex-wife" sitcom level shit. He has one where he threatens Nitara if she goes near her, but that's it. There honestly seems to be something there with Cristina that the writers overlooked. She fell in love with Johnny before the fame, when he was John Carlton. It would've worked as the setup for a real arc for Johnny, where he has to learn that there's more to life and himself than the action movie star. It would serve as a nice echo of his development between MK9 and MKX. I'll be honest, as much as I like BladeCage, I wanted Johnny and Cristina to work things out.
While we're on the subject of intro dialogues, does the frequent use of the words male and female rub anyone else the wrong way? Maybe it's because our world is plagued by transphobes and their bullshit rhetoric, but I do not trust when those words replace man and woman in sentences where they shouldn't be. It makes dialogue sound less organic.
Baraka and Repile as heroes? Ashrah's return? Syzoth/Ashrah? Perfect. Amazing. No notes (except for a major one that I'll get to in a minute).
While I agree that Kitana was a bit underutilized, she still works. Love her.
Also loved how they used Mileena in the story, and she has some pretty good intros. So glad we got to see her with the heroes and on good terms with her family. Mitanya/Tanleena is also a very cute ship.
Li Mei was fine. She has a great new moveset. ACAB tho
Does anyone else think it's weird that they changed Quan Chi from an actual demon to a person of color, and then gave his white skin an origin story? His role in the story works, though he and his titan counterpart become second fiddles to Shang Tsung in the second half of the game. Sean Krishnan gives a good performance, but I do miss Ronald Banks.
Oh, General Shao. How the mighty have fallen. While Ike Amidi is a good actor, that voice does not work for Shao. It works for characters like Atrocitus because it's a very brutish voice. It lacks subtlety. There were times it was okay in MK11, but they doubled down in 12 and it does not work. General Shao gets one or two moments where I believed this was an accomplished war hero who genuinely believes what he's doing is right, but they are few and far between. The truth is, I don't think Netherrealm Games respects Shao Kahn, and that's a shame.
While we're on the subject of voices, let's get to Sub-Zero. While Kaiji Tang works for a character like Sanemi, it really doesn't work for Bi-Han. There is not a hint of subtlety in his try-hard edgelord presence.
Kuai Liang as Scorpion is... okay. Liu Kang really did give him Hanzo's moves, outfit, powers, name, wife, and position, and then made him a young Hanzo's mentor. Daisuke Tsuji was a great choice to play him, tho.
Glad Smoke is back and that's he voiced by Yuri Lowenthal, but there isn't a whole lot there. He's almost as boring as Raiden.
So, I know Jerrod being a part of Ermac has been a thing since MK9 and Netherrealm is finally doing something with the concept, but I don't care for it. It's not bad, and it works in the story, but I feel that giving Ermac the soul of a major character detracts from him being his own character. Ermac stops being Ermac and instead becomes a second life for Jerrod.
Pretty boy Havik and his hair still makes me laugh.
Darrius sure does exist.
The less said about Nitara Fox the better.
Glad Motaro and Sareena returned. Goro still seems way too short.
The writers did well with Sindel, making her a noble queen but one who holds grudges and has a temper is many steps above Twindel. Shame she died tho.
Liu Kang gets a B- for this new timeline. Matthew King continues to nail it out of the park with his performance, the Fire God has some spectacular fatalities, and there's a lot of interesting stuff in this new status quo. There's just a lot to nitpick with the third timeline.
So, my main gripe with the story starts at the Titan Shang Tsung reveal. The reveal itself is perfect. Aftermath's alternate ending being canon in another timeline and using him as the villain behind the scenes is an idea worthy of two chef's kisses.
However, it's to this story's detriment. He usurps the narrative significance of the current timeline's villains and their plot. Had they saved Titan Shang Tsung for the very end and as the antagonist for the next game, it would allow better focus on our current timeline villains and given more heroes screentime. Baraka, Ashrah, and Reptile disappear half-way through the game. Mileena and Sindel get to shine (before the latter becomes the sole heroic casualty), but the rest of our heroes only get a handful of moments. This is especially bad because from chapters Kenshi to Syzoth, the group dynamic was so strong that I missed this team working together during the second half of the game.
While there is something commendable in going so big as Armageddon 2.0, the fusion fighters feels gimicky and the Titanic Deadly Alliance just feels... eh. Honestly, most of the minions don't feel like they come from the same timeline as the Dark Raiden and Twindel that we fought earlier.
And then the Deadly Alliance just gets beaten. The diner scene that follows feels weaker because A, not all of our heroes are there, and B, Geras' warning that Liu Kang will have to sacrifice the life he's grown accustomed to doesn't pan out because he can just hang out with them any time he wants. If "the realms are in good hands" is meant to tie back in to that "sacrifice", then it falls flat because it doesn't connect.
Then there's the end credits teaser, which is a dud. What makes Titan Havik any more threatening than the other two titans that we just defeated? If Titan Havik is a teaser for an Invasions event, whatever. If he's set up for MK13, then every criticism
But if they were dead set on having Armageddon 2.0 in MK12 and if they wanted to set up the next game, Titan Havik wasn't the one to go with. You know who they should've had step through that portal?
Tumblr media
The return of the OG Shao Kahn empowered by Blaze would've knocked the socks off of everyone. It establishes that the Midway timeline still exists (even if everyone is dead in it), puts Shao Kahn back in a place of honor, and would be WAY more hype for MK13.
Anyway, those are my many thoughts.

AND AT LAST... the animated Subz :)
Mortal Kombat: The journey begins
Tumblr media
GOING 🥺 WONT SAVE YOU, CATBOY. 3/10
Mortal Kombat: Defenders Of The Realms
Tumblr media
Pictured above: blue scorpion dying from his own ice, 3/10, because I still think he looks nice in the DoTR artstyle but its a 2/10 at heart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another Subz that I'm fond of. First off he pulls off the mk3 look far better than mk3 Subz himself, his back is covered but his tits have to be out, I love him so fucking much. He activates my meow meow instincts. He gets a 7/10 but I cannot stress enough that he got one of those point solely because his nasally voice is ultimate. Mr. Luke Perry thank you so much for your services.
Mortal Kombat: Scorpion's Revenge
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bi-Han fucking stole one of Kuai Liang's outfits before going to the tournament.
Funny thing is? He pulls it off far better than Kuai.
See this is something I shouldve said for Scorpion because this is true for him too but the animated movies have such a way of... improving the mkx designs (which theyre shamelessly using willy nilly) solely by simplifying them. Like, those brown belts thing I hated? Gone, theyre black now, same went for Scorpion. So yeah, Bi-Han kinda look... good here in the mkx outfit and the mask. Too bad he actually showed up for a literal minute and a half before dying because someone framed him. Confused for like 75% he was on screen. Incredible. 7/10 for working a miracle. Also SHAKING AND CRYING MR. BLUM YOU ARE VOICING THE WRONG SUB ZEROOO...
Mortal Kombat: Battle Of The Realms
Tumblr media
Before anything else let me say this: I love Kuai Liang with a beard. He looks SO good with a beard. The beard is the ultimate unmasked Sub Zero look.
The PROBLEM HERE THO is that yeah, Kuai has a beard in mkx. When he's middle aged. That's why his hairline look like that too. They just took his mkx design and called it a day even tho he's like, supposed to be in his late 20s here. He's maybe just a year older than me. Shave this dude, let us see his babyface.
Anyway its whatever, its just some Dam nitpick, his eyes are pretty, hes pretty, I like that one curl he has going on in the back of his head, 6/10.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's incredible how much is fixed once the mask is on. (The voice actor too, I actually kinda like his performance a lot ONCE he put on the mask with the echo thingie, plus he kinda sounds like a higher pitched Steve Blum which would make sense considering this is a younger Kuai)
Im imagining him clean shaved under there. Also I do kinda wish his scar was more visible but its still noticable so its fine.
Anyway, Bi-Han stole his mkx outfit last movie so Kuai had to take out some other outfit and CHEERING AND HOLLERING HE PICKED THE MK9 ONE GOD BLESS. its a lot more simplified but its still it and I still love it!!! Best mask best hood best clothes. I kept saying that his pair of eyes were pretty and now you can gaze into them all day long until the movie ends. He also had some pretty LGBT moments happening to him in this movie so thats, yknow :), 9/10.
Tumblr media
Okay, FINE, whatever, 10/10.
Picture that mess with your brain chemicals.
Picture that rewire your entire brain even.

MK11: My thoughts (positive)
I have very mixed feelings about this game. Not just on its own but also in comparison to the most recent previous games. On one hand, it has blown my mind with exciting new stuff. On the other hand, it left me bitterly disappointed. For now, I’d like to share what impressed me about MK11.
Part 1
1. Shang Tsung
First and foremost, this man totally captured my attention the moment his trailer was dropped. With his inclusion in Mortal Kombat Aftermath, Shang Tsung easily became the best thing about MK11. It helps immensely the sorcerer of Outworld is voiced by the OG actor from 1995′s Mortal Kombat Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa. He’s still got it! Shang Tsung’s cold and calculating demeanor, his deceptive ploys, and his fighting style were amazing to say the least. Having him being the creator of Kronika’s crown was an excellent, as well as him using the crown for himself. And, as heartless as this may sound, but I much prefer Shang Tsung’s final ending. He deserved that win and I’m no goodie two shoes. I genuinely hope to see more of Shang Tsung in the future.
2. Spawn
I was first introduced to Spawn via Screwattack’s Deathbattle. I knew right then and there Spawn was a badass. After watching some of the TV show and his movie, this fact was further solidified. Spawn’s god like powers, no bullshit attitude, and stellar voice actor Keith David make Spawn the King of the Mortal Kombat universe. I also love how they tease the familial relationship between Malebogia and Kronika’s family. It would make a kickass spin off series. Plus, this Hellspawn has the most bitchin set of foul language dialogue. He easily towers over everyone else. Hands down, Spawn is the most dope DLC character NRS decided to include in Mortal Kombat 11.
3. Mileena
I always thought Mileena was one of the more interesting characters of Mortal Kombat. Her upbringing was crazy and her development as a pinnacle part of Mortal Kombat was fascinating. I especially liked Mileena in MKX. I was admittedly sad when I witnessed her death scene (Fuck you D’Vorah). Like everyone else in the Mortal Kombat community, I was thrilled to hear Mileena was to be added in the Mortal Kombat roster. Like Shang Tsung and Spawn, Mileena’s gameplay trailer blew my mind. Her intro dialogues was also just as entertaining. The intros I love most are the ones where Mileena perfectly imitates Kitana’s voice. I was fucking speechless. Mileena’s hybrid fighting style, her unwavering savagery, and brilliantly talented voice actress Kari Wahlgren were a real treat to have. I can say without a doubt Mileena is the most vicious character in the Mortal Kombat roster. She’ll always be one of my favorites.
4. 1995 Mortal Kombat actor skins
As someone who watched the original film at a young age, I was stoked to hear NRS brought back the original actors for Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, and Christopher Lambert. Though they may not have been top notch with their voice acting, I very much noticed the effort they each put in. I was anything but disappointed. Some of the intros the original three voiced are better than the ones done by the MK11 voice actors. Props to NRS on this decision. I appreciated the nostalgia.
5. Friendships
For a game containing some of the most graphic violence, it was comforting to see Friendships added to the game. Many of them surprised me. Some of them I loved. Some of them I didn’t. My favorites include Jax Briggs, Mileena, Fujin, Scorpion, Rambo, Robocop, Kung Lao, and Lui Kang. Jax had the most entertaining friendship. Mileena had the most adorable. Fujin, Rambo, and Kung Lao reminded me of activities I did or wanted to do as a kid. Robocop was very much fitting for his character. Overall, very well done on the friendships.

Ok love let’s get personal 😏 tell me what made you fall for Johnny! His gorgeous body? Charming personality? Award winning (ha!) smile? I want all the wonderful (smutty 😏) details you’ve got!
What started it? 2 words. Linden Ashby.
And I mean it. I saw Mortal Kombat at the cinema (and LOVED it) and of course I couldn’t help but immediately fall in love with this Johnny. I’d played MK before then, even had the very first version on the Master System (so old it didn’t even have enough memory to cope with all the fighters so they cut KANO from it *cries*). He was the perfect mixture of hot and hilarious and he (along with Cary and Christophe Lambert) made the film for me. I honestly adore the film and will happily watch it now. We ignore the 2nd film (yeah, replace Linden Ashby with a random and then kill Johnny after 5 seconds?! That’s going to get me on side, wankers.)
After the film I went back to playing the games and Raiden (“the man with the hat” as my Mum calls him) was always my main (mixed in with some Noob and Smoke). After MK Trilogy I missed out on MK until 9 was released, and yeah, Johnny was alright, he’s funny as hell, but after his chapter he becomes a punching bag :( and I was happy blowing kisses at Raiden.
Then we get to MKX and we meet MY Johnny. Andrew Bowen’s voice is hot as hell and he is SUCH a good voice actor, without him I wouldn’t love Johnny nearly as much. Honestly, his voice does very naughty things to me, very good naughty things (in my knickers). Johnny makes MKX, he starts the thing off and if I play it or watch it through on Youtube when I get a hankering, then I always want more of him. I am a greedy slut.
I think the kharacter design is hot. I wasn’t sure of his Special Forces look to start, and when I play MKX I use either his Ninja Mime skin or his topless kostue (again, slut) and wish they’d gone for something more, well, more Johnny. Yes he’d wear the kombat trousers and vest on missions, but the guy takes care of himself and would have adopted “Treat yo self’ as one of his main mottos, so he’d wear more klassic stuff (if you zoom in on his tux shirt he has his own little JC logos on it , amazing detailing, so he has a clothing line and he’s wear that, all sexy designer looks) when not working. I absolutely ADORE the tux look in MK11, he looks incredible in it. (And oh yessss they’ve rolled up the sleeves to show off his forearms. Anyone looks good doing that, any gender, and age, any size, anyone, instantly boosts your hotness.)
The storyline of MKX where he gets together with Sonya is totally believable. If you watch Maximilian Dood play the Johnny vs Shinnok chapter on Youtube when Johnny says “She called me Johnny” Max will say something like “Oh don’t go get charming on me Johnny, you’re making me like you.” And that is exactly what Johnny’s doing, he’s charming the knickers off Sonya and everyone playing the game. Instant love. You totally see why Sonya falls for him, cos you’d be mad not to.Then you meet Older!Johnny and he’s still utterly hilarious, but now he’s more charming, less of a douche, has the sexy salt and pepper hair, still shows off the tattoo, and I wanted him even more. His obvious adoration for Cassie makes my knickers evaporate. I don’t have/want kids, but if I did a Sonya and ended up pregnant with his kiddo, you know that he'd just be the absolute best Dad.
How they treat his split from Sonya is pretty realistic. The comics show that Sonya kept with her career, and Johnny was a stay at home Dad (obviously still doing his films), and that Sonya wouldn’t take time away from her job caused the family to break up. Again, as a non kid person myself I can totally see Sonya’s side. But I can also see Johnny’s and Cassie’s (and isn’t this just forgotten in MK11?! BULLSHIT.)
Johnny interacting with Kenshi is fantastic (yeah, I totally ship it), and with Kuai (yeah, I totally ship it) and with Raiden (yeah, I totally ship it). (The “I’m guessing it’s not your first time in cuffs. What’s your safe word?” to Quan Chi with Kenshi sniggering is HILARIOUS. As is “Oh sorry ma’am, didn’t see you there” to Shinnok.
I LOVE HIM.)
Now onto MK11. Yeah, he’s GORGEOUS. His face model Colin Ryan is hot as hell (thank you NRS) and thank the Elder Gods they kept Andrew Bowen as his v/a. I’d have gone on a one woman riot if they’d changed him.
Thankfully he is mostly hilarious, and we get to feel his sadness when Sonya dies and he comforts Cassie. The bond between him and his loved ones is beautiful. His fatalities are my favourites (OMG that leer he does at the end of his ventriloquist act is knicker-ruiningly hot. GOD DAMN!)
Young Johnny is an absolute dick until he does that face at Sonya bandaging him up at the end, and we see Older!Johnny start to emerge. He’s a good boy really, his Dad just fucked him up and made him think he had to be a prick.
His clothes. So they kept with the SF styling for Older!Johnny, and it’s still not great. He looks great in it, but he’d look great in a bin bag. I am SO glad they brought out the tux, (I have already squealed on about that, but fuck me it’s amaaaaaaazing) and I LOVE the Ninja Mime kostume. The younger outfits are great too with topless being the icing on the cake. The vests are great, the colours are great, the sunglasses are great.
The non sleezeball intros are hilarious, as are his taunts (the Mime one is especially brilliant, as is the fuck you one!) I love him playing with the toy Johnny, the splits, the autograph (I imagine he’s writing that on my tits).
The bad MK11 stuff: Yeah, MK11 isn’t the best. I honestly can’t buy him and Sonya back together after how their marriage ended. He may have forgiven her, but that would never stop him feeling like she hurt Cassie, and Cassie is his everything, and you just wouldn’t get past that. Sure you could keep the peace, be civil, but feeling his child was abandoned by the other parent is not something that would ever be pushed aside. I think NRS made a huge error in getting them back together, it was obviously to heighten the emotion of Sonya’s death, and that’s pretty pathetic writing on NRS’s part.
Johnny’s intros have him behaving pretty appallingly towards the majority of the female kombatants. There was no need for him to be so sleazy. Sure Younger!Johnny is a sleazy prick, but he’s a ridiculously famous movie star, he can get anyone he wants, why have him sound like a slimeball desperate for pussy? It’s done so badly, ugh. And the non distinction between Older and Younger!Johnny is sheer laziness by NRS. Not hard to make different intros for different variations. Same goes for how they fucked up the revenant skins, kharacters will state they aren’t revenants when they have a revenant skin. Fucking terrible by NRS.
Also I am greedy and wanted more of him in the story, buuuuuut that is appallingly greedy, especially when Kabal, Erron and Bi-Han got 5 fucking seconds of FUCKING BULLSHIT.
And also, what the fuck is up with Johnny’s ending with rehab? Where did that come from? Sure he’s a film star but he never seemed drunk or high or owt so WTF? Sadly I would bet money that they put that in to try to lesson the ‘Sonya fucked up the family’ and shift the blame to Johnny. Go fuck yourselves NRS, go on, go fuck yourselves.
So what is it that makes me love Johnny? The humour and Older!Johnny’s personality, hands down. Make me laugh and I am a very happy woman. Add in muscles and a smile that could kill me?
I LOVE HIM.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
(Ok and I had this ridiculous daydream once about Older!Johnny getting a part in a Tarantino film, and it totally revitalising his career (just like John Travolta) and making everyone sit up and go “Whoa, I didn’t know he could actually act”. Ridiculous I know.)

may i ask for johnny peepants cage for that character ask meme 👀
Yeah babey!
How I feel about this character: Always loved him just for the sheer ridiculousness of a famous Hollywood actor fighting with/alongside ninjas and gods and monsters and shit. That said he was definitely a douche and while it was mostly funny it was also a bit... ugh at times, like with the way he treated Sonya in MK9 (granted, my friends and I did quote “and I’m taking you out... for dinner!” all the time back in 2011-2012). He’s gotten a lot more likable since then though, he keeps his humor but gets a lot more mature and less selfish and I love that he’s such a good father and husband it’s such a glo up. “Johnny Cage has gotten really good character development” sounds like a joke when you say it to people but like it’s true ghhgfdkj he’s great
All the people I ship romantically with this character: You know I actually disliked the idea of Cageblade in MK9 so when Cassie was revealed for MKX and we found out she was their daughter I felt... iffy, but I figured I would wait and see what they do with them because maybe they’ll sell me on it and yeah they definitely did fhfhdjk I love Cageblade tbh. They’re not a perfect couple and they’ve got some shit to work out together as well as separately but there is something really sweet about them and yeah they’re just. good
My non-romantic OTP for this character: I like his relationship with the Kombat Kids, it’s cute! Also with Kenshi
My unpopular opinion about this character: As far as I’m aware I don’t have one?
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I’m happy with how things have gone with him so far honestly there’s nothing in particular that I would change. Well, okay, maybe that scene with him and Sonya on the bridge in MK9 cause that was pretty... yikes. Like it would already be improved somewhat if there just wasn’t a fight between them. Also wish he wouldn’t hit on almost every female character in his intros in MK11, like I’m pretty sure most of those intros are meant to be his younger (douchier) self but even so it’s. annoying, but that’s another one of those things that’s not just a Johnny problem it’s a problem with quite a few male characters in the game. So anyway yeah I’d like to change that, but for the most part they’ve done right by Johnny, there’s not much I wish were different

Although in regards of last post, the main reason why the “I would kill you but that’s not what I’m here for” doesn’t really annoy me is because I believe Kuai was supposed to be angrier back then. Like he was still a good person, no doubt. But I do headcanon that younger Kuai could be more violent and angrier. Just because this was still him fresh with the LK, and well... he was young and stupid, he hadn’t aged and mellowed yet. And also just because I always thought in MK9, his voice sounded more aggressive than it does in MKX/MK11. Of course, different voice actors. But I do like to believe that Kuai DID indeed just grow up to control his emotions better, and to be less violent.
