Senegal Edged Ecuador In A Thriller, the United States Advanced
A Recap of Groups A & B of the 2022 FIFA World Cup
Tumblr media
The scenes as the final whistle blew, where Senegal advanced to the knock-out stage after defeating Ecuador 2-1 (📸 AS USA)
Yesterday saw the conclusion of Groups A and B of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which confirmed the Netherlands' qualification to the knock-out stage, as well as naming 3 more qualifiers: Senegal (Group A), England, and the United States (both came from Group B). On the other hand, Qatar's elimination was further confirmed after they were outplayed by the Netherlands 0-2 due to Cody Gakpo's and Frenkie de Jong's goals throughout the two halves. They became the second host country since 1992 to be eliminated in the group stage, with a distinction to South Africa's 2010.
The other match of Group A sees the thrilling battle between Senegal and Ecuador, where Senegal initially led at 43' on Ismaila Saar's penalty. However, as soon as the second half started, Moises Caicedo scored an equalizer right in response to the corner, before Kalidou Koulibaly quickly responded minutes later with a half-volley right after the free kick to send Senegal to the lead, and the victory 2-1 by the end of the match.

As a result, the Netherlands strengthened their qualifying position by leading by 7 points, followed by Senegal who scored 2 wins by the end for 6 points. Ecuador left in third place, while Qatar was eliminated empty-handed since they only got 0 points by the end of the group stage.
Meanwhile in Group B...

Christian Pulisic scored a goal via a header to send the United States leading 1-0 before he sustained an injury afterward (📸 Sky Sports).
Two contrasting, but equally high-tension matches, appeared in two different forms: the Battle of the Brits (England v. Wales), and the most anticipated Iran v. United States (for some current geopolitical reasons).
In the first half, while England and Wales tied in a goalless manner, the United States started to lead by Christian Pulisic's goal at 38', where he "sacrificed" his header in a collision with Alireza Beiranvand, the Iranian goalkeeper, suffering a pelvic contusion afterward after being rushed to a nearby hospital. This score would then stay until the end of the match, where Iran tried to increase their intensity in the second half, but could not able to maximize their chances, knowing how well the United States defended.

Marcus Rashford's goal celebration after he scored his first goal in the match against Wales (📸 Daily Mirror)
However, England was proven to be the dominant Brit in this match against Wales. A perfect corner execution from Marcus Rashford opened the goal party at 49' before it was followed by Phil Foden's completion of the previous assists from the left to score another goal around 52'. England kept pressuring Wales until it bore another fruit with another Marcus Rashford goal after receiving a right-wing assist from Kalvin Phillips with a stunning finish at 67', where the pitch was left undefended by the Welsh.
Tumblr media
The final standings of Group B (📸 Sky Sports)
As a result, both England and the United States secured their qualifying position to the knock-out stage, scoring 7 and 5 points, respectively, while leaving Iran and Wales to elimination.
With this outcome, the first two matches of the Round of 16 are set, which sets the Netherlands to face the United States and England to face Senegal in the other half. On paper, this might have looked like the Netherlands and England to take the match, but knowing the depth and surprises that this year's World Cup gives, we never know, it could also be the other way round, with the penalty shootout to the rescue should there be a draw and extra time!

Jude Bellingham put in a hugely influential display as England got their World Cup underway with a convincing 6-2 win over Iran. Having reached the semi-finals four years ago, Gareth Southgate’s side dominated the ball from the off as Iran looked content to try to frustrate the favourites and hit on the counterattack through the dangerous Mehdi Taremi. The first half was, however, disrupted as first-choice Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand was treated for a clash of heads, and despite trying to carry on, he soon had to admit defeat and be replaced. In the 35th minute, however, England did make the breakthrough that their dominance deserved, Luke Shaw putting in a lovely first-time cross from the left that was met by Bellingham who guided a superb header into the top corner for his first international goal. That goal seemed to settle England and break Iranian hopes, and just eight minutes later, the Three Lions got a second – the much-criticised Harry Maguire nodding down a corner from the left before Bukayo Saka thrashed home a fine left-footed half-volley. .amp-wp-article a color: #ff8c00; .g1-gamma a color: #000; .g1-logo max-width: 300px; max-height: 30px; .g1-button, [type=button], [type=reset], [type=submit], button text-transform: lowercase; background: none; border: none; padding-left: 100px; padding-bottom: 15px; #bet365 position:fixed;left:1%;bottom:1%;z-index:99999999; Privacy Settings It was three as the game ticked into 14 minutes of stoppage time, the influential Bellingham picking up a loose ball in the middle of the park and driving towards goal. He laid the ball into the path of Harry Kane in the right channel, before the skipper’s drilled cross picked out Raheem Sterling who finished first-time beyond substitute ‘keeper Hossein Hosseini. Bukayo Saka has enjoyed a fine start to the season with Arsenal, and the 21-year-old scored his second of the afternoon on 62 minutes, picking up the ball on the right, shifting onto his favoured left before firing through a crowd of bodies. There was a blot on the England copybook as Iran pulled a goal back through their talisman Taremi, the Porto star getting in behind Harry Maguire to get on the end of an Ali Gholizadeh reverse ball before lashing past Jordan Pickford. In the 90th minute, Bellingham then picked out the perfectly timed run of substitute Callum Wilson, the in-form Newcastle man racing in behind the Iranian defence, before unselfishly squaring it to Jack Grealish who made it six. In the 12th minute of second-half stoppage time, VAR would conspire to award Iran a penalty for a shirt pull by John Stones – even despite them not awarding England a spot-kick in the first half for a much more obvious foul on Harry Magure – but Taremi stepped up to net his second of the afternoon with what was the very last kick of the afternoon. Much had been made of the potential setup coming into the game, and Southgate opted to go with a 4-3-3, a system that really seemed to bring the best out of Jude Bellingham who was involved in a number of England’s best moments. Speaking after the game, the Borussia Dortmund star was pleased with his side’s creativity, but disappointed to have conceded twice. “Really good day for us,” he told BBC One. “I think six goals in a World Cup game is really impressive regardless who you play against. I think they came out really well, really strong, hard to break down and we didn’t have anything clear for quite a while. “I think with more goals we opened them up, but the start was tough and we had to dig it out when we wasn’t getting it all our way. It’s important that we learn how to create chances against them kind of sides but we are a bit disappointed with the two goals [conceded] to be honest.” Jude Bellingham's game by numbers vs. Iran: ◉ 100% tackle success ◉ 100% take-ons completed ◉ 97% pass accuracy ◎ 95 passes ◎ 13 passes into final ⅓ ◎ 9 x possession won (most) ◎ 7 duels won ◎ 3 tackles made ◎ 2 take-ons ◎ 1 goal Incredible.#FIFAWorldCup pic.twitter.com/8CI4wsFhJ6 — Squawka (@Squawka) November 21, 2022 Asked about becoming only the second teenager to score for England at a World Cup, he said: “I thought it had missed. I feel like it took ages to loop into the goal. But I told you I want to score more goals for Dortmund and for England last year. “I was in the right position. It was a brilliant ball by Shaw and I was there to flick it away. A really proud moment for me.” The win puts England top of Group B before Wales’ meeting with the USA later today, and the teenager said a win in the opening game will lessen the pressure before England’s final two group games. “Yeah, definitely [it lessens the pressure],” he said. “Wins do that and when you win games, you are at ease for a bit longer and you know there’s a bit [of pressure] off you for the next two. “We’ll still be at the same level trying to perform and get two more wins because that’s how we want to be and carry that mentality into the rest of the tournament.” Read – Appreciating the three legends about to feature in their FIFTH World Cup See also – Five of England’s best World Cup goals | | | #Mancity, #ManchesterCity, #premierleague, #livematch, #livestream, #skysports, #premierleaguetv, #epl, #epl2023, #premier league, #premierleaguetable, #epl table, #eplfixtures, #ipl2021 live, #premierleaguefixtures, #fantasypremier eague, #eplresults, #epllivescores, #premierleague results, #pltable, #chelseafixtures, #eplscores, #arsenalfixtures, #premier leaguestandings, #eplstandings, #plfixtures, #eplschedule, #ipllive 2023, #dstvpremiership, #premierleaguetable2023, #pslfixtures, #epllive, #premiershiptable, #eplresultstoday, #eplfixturestoday, #Bitcoin, #Dolars

FIFA World Cup innehåller genuina känslor från landslagsfans

Two Games In: Qatar Ousted in Home Soil, France Sailed Through
A Recap after the Two Group Stage Matches of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Groups A-D
Tumblr media
Ecuador celebrated their goal in the match against Qatar, which sent the home team to elimination (📸 Head Topics).
This piece was started to be written hours before Japan takes Costa Rica and focuses on how Groups A until D unfolded in their first two matches. Some countries had their fates already sealed, but some others will have the third matches to decide their knock-out rounds qualification.
A week has passed since this year’s FIFA World Cup opened in a grandiose ceremony, where afterward Qatar was defeated by Ecuador in their opening match. Each country had their own ups and downs, some started slow but they managed to back it up with a stellar performance in the second match. The first four groups already completed their first two matches, where for some groups, the the third match becomes a decider than a dead rubber.
The situation in each group differs: in Group D, for example, France secured its qualification to the knock-out stage after defeating Denmark 2-1. While Qatar somehow got eliminated in their home soil after the two losses (both against Ecuador and Senegal), the chances to qualify from Group C becomes completely wide open after Argentina defeated Mexico 2-0 last night.
And here is how every group unfolds. Buckle up, this is going to be a long read.
Group A
Tumblr media
The standings of Group A (📸 LiveScore)
Qatar opened their World Cup campaign with a 0-2 loss against Ecuador, with both goals scored by Enner Valencia because of a penalty kick and after receiving an assist from Moises Caicedo. They subsequently lost against Senegal 1-3, becoming the first team to be eliminated from the group stage. In the case of the latter, however, although they tried to raise their offensive level from Mohammed Muntari’s goal in 76’, it was not enough to counter Senegal’s setup from the beginning due to their disorganized measures.
Speaking of Senegal, their only victory against Qatar landed them in the third position of the standings after their slight loss against the Netherlands (2-0) in the opener. Even without Sadio Mane, who sat out due to the knee injury sustained a week prior during Bayern Munich’s match against Werder Bremen, Senegal played considerably well, minus the precision that the Netherlands side had.
Tumblr media
The Dutch team celebrating their second goal against Senegal right before the final whistle (📸 Kyodo News via Getty Images)
The Netherlands started strong by defeating Senegal 2-0, and subsequently tied Ecuador 1-1. Initially, the Netherlands led from Cody Gakpo’s quick goal at 1-0, assisted by Davy Klaassen. Their defense could help them maintain their lead before Enner Valencia scored an equalizer at the start of the second half (51’), striking the ball right to a blank spot slight after Andreas Noppert’s save. However, several minutes and wasted chances later, this close encounter still ended with a draw when the final whistle blowed.
The third match for this group would then see the dead rubber between Qatar and the Netherlands. In this case, for the former, at least aiming for a tie rather than being eliminated with a disappointment as a host, especially knowing the strength in the Netherlands. On the other hand, Ecuador and Senegal will battle all the way out to claim one of the two qualifying spots, where the winner will increase their knock-outs qualifying likelihood, makes it way more interesting to follow (for some).
Group B

The standings of Group B (📸 LiveScore)
Tumblr media
The England team celebrated after one of the goals toward the end of the match against Iran (📸 Goal UK via Getty Images)
England started their World Cup match on fire by defeating Iran 6-2, a scoreline that equals a tennis set. However, this match took ages to finish after several stoppages: first, an early collision at 7’ that resulted in Alireza Beiranvand’s serious head injury and continued by another suspected concussion that resulted in Harry Maguire’s blurred vision (forcing him to be substituted in the second half), hence the lengthy medical time-outs. As a compensation, 14 minutes and 10 minutes were added to the first and second halves, respectively.
A match later, they tied with the United States 0-0 (in linguistic terms: neither football nor soccer prevails). The United States had their chances, mostly executed by Christian Pulisic (a possible reasoning behind the votes for him for the Man of the Match); however, neither any of these chances got converted nor England actually following up their goal attempts (each of 3 on and off-target chances). The United States came to this match from another draw against Wales, where Timothy Weah scored a goal from the near-empty penalty box after being assisted by Pulisic, only for it to be equalized at 81’ by a successful penalty execution in Gareth Bale.
Tumblr media
Gareth Bale’s reaction after the final whistle was blown in the Welsh match against Iran (📸 The Telegraph)
Their damage-making capability like in those matches will be tested when facing Iran in the next match, who came from a convincing 2-0 victory against Wales. The latter, who had to play with only 10-men after Wayne Hennessey received a red card for a brutal kick to jaw when countering Iran’s Mehdi Taremi, conceded two goals right one after another as a cherry on top on Iran’s increased intensity: at 90+8’ by Rouzbeh Cheshmi and 90+11’ by Ramin Rezaeian’s empty-pitch execution, despite Wales dominated the ball possession.
For some reason, the third matches of this group will look brutal: the Battle of the Brits between England v. Wales, where Wales likely qualified should they win (and the United States needed to lose against Iran); and the United States v. Iran, where Iran could strengthen their qualification likelihood by a victory, even if England draws or loses. Looking neat, since both matches will play simultaneously.
Group C
Tumblr media
The standings of Group C (📸 LiveScore)
When it was heard that “everything is wide open” about their qualification paths, it indeed is. For Poland, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, and Mexico, everything boiled down to the possibly chaotic third round robin matches: Poland takes on Argentina, while Saudi Arabia takes on Mexico. The first two matches showed the reason behind how the path opens for every country in this group.
The reaction from the Arabic-language commentator after the final whistle blowed during Saudi Arabia v. Argentina, where the former won 2-1 (🎥 BeIN Sports Arabia).
The first match saw an upset start, where Saudi Arabia defeated Argentina 2-1. Lionel Messi successfully executed a penalty to secure the lead for Argentina at 9’ on a penalty; however, Lisandro Martinez’s goal at 34’ (should have been a 2-0, had the goal ruled in) was ruled as an offside according to VAR. In the second half, Saudi Arabia turned things around thanks to their counter-offensives, started by Saleh Al-Shehri’s goal at 49’ that caught the Argentinean side off-guard, followed by Salem Al-Dawsari’s goal at 53’. Subsequently after this victory, Saudi Arabia declared the day after the match (Wednesday) as a public holiday, citing the impact towards the Middle Eastern football/soccer scene in general.
However, Poland succeeded in maximizing their chances against such spirited Saudi Arabia in their 2-0 victory afterward. Coming from the previous goalless draw against Mexico, both Poland and Saudi Arabia started brutally with the number of yellow cards the referee pulled. Piotr Zielinski started the goal for Poland at 38’, where he fired the ball to an empty pitch after Robert Lewandowski’s chance was saved earlier. Wojciech Szczesny prevented Saudi Arabia to score an equalizer at 45’, before Robert Lewandowski finally scored a World Cup goal at 82’ after another empty pitch strike, despite Saudi Arabia’s best efforts to create their on-target chances.
Tumblr media
The Mexican side saw Guillermo Ochoa saved Robert Lewandowski’s penalty kick, where they defended well (and had their chances) against all the Polish strikes, hence the goalless draw. However, Argentina scored a much-needed victory when they faced Mexico, where Ochoa had to concede twice despite their best attempts to pressure Argentina’s rhythm: Lionel Messi scored a goal at 64’ right after receiving an assist from Angel di Maria, while he assisted Enzo Fernandez to score another goal at 87’. The next match-up will be proven tough for Argentina, as they take Poland in a big decider match: and considering some people will take this as Lewandowski v. Messi for the big names’ battle, it is definitely exciting to follow how things unfold.
The utter chaos continues at November 30, where both Poland vs. Argentina and Mexico vs. Saudi Arabia will be played simultaneously. Knowing how wide open the field is that started well, maintained their form/moment, and maximized their chances will prevail at the end of the match. Call that “survival of the fittest” or anything, because expect the unexpected. May the best teams advance to the knock-out stage.

Kylian Mbappe’s celebration after the French victory against Denmark 2-1 yesterday (📸 NDTV via AFP).
The 2018 World Champions, France, started their World Cup campaign this year convincingly, as they defeated Australia 4-1 and Denmark 2-1, respectively. Although there were hiccups in between, they managed to stand out by pressing both Australia and Denmark after their equalizers for them to score another goal. In the case of Denmark match-up, some credits went to Kylian Mbappe, as he scored two goals, assisted by Theo Hernandez and Antoine Griezmann in the process.
The other qualification spot will be a competition between Australia, Denmark, and Tunisia, to some extent. For Australia, despite their 1-4 loss against France, they made it up for a slight victory (1-0) against Tunisia. The ball possession was almost equal until Mitchell Duke scored a goal via half-header at 23’, and despite Tunisia dominating the flow in the second half, they did not manage to counter Australia’s strong defensive lines. To add to this, Tunisia came from a draw when facing Denmark (0-0, the first of such draws in the tournament), hence its necessity to at least draw France to keep their hopes alive (although, knowing France, this could be tricky to materialize).
However, for Australia to get out of this group, they have to handle a strong Denmark, who also came from a draw and loss to strengthen their position. Knowing their current form, the victory against Tunisia could possibly be a confidence-boosting for Australia, where a draw can be enough for them (against Denmark) to advance. The likelihood is there: they need to build up from here despite their reliance to France’s victory against Tunisia (or at least, a draw).
Groups E-H
The day starts with the matches from Groups E & F, in the order as follows:
Japan v. Costa Rica (Ben Ali Stadium)
Belgium v. Morocco (Al Thummama Stadium)
Croatia v. Canada (Khalifa International Stadium)
Spain v. Germany (Al Beit Stadium)
Spain and Japan had a slight advantage from their previous victories, where another victory would secure their qualification to the knock-out rounds. Knowing Germany, it definitely will not look easy for Spain, despite Japan’s slight victory against Germany 2-1. Knowing Japan’s form, this is Costa Rica’s match to survive another day, where a draw would have helped their slightest chances to leave the spot wide open, depending on the outcome of the other match.
Meanwhile, Canada will need the match against Croatia to live up their hopes in their first World Cup appearance since 1986. It surely will not be easy; however, given their decent defense performance against Belgium (only conceded a goal), they might pull an upset (but we will see). For Belgium, a victory against Morocco is important to seal their qualification, although a draw might be enough for them just to be safe, unless Morocco and Croatia wins. The chances are still open, to some extent.
The next day sees Groups G & H battle for the knock-out spots, in this order:
Cameroon v. Serbia (Al Janoub Stadium)
South Korea v. Ghana (Education City Stadium)
Brazil v. Switzerland (Stadium 974)
Portugal v. Uruguay (Losail Stadium)
Brazil and Switzerland will fight for their group winner position in this match-up, while Cameroon and Serbia fights to stay alive. This leaves the likelihood of this group’s qualification open, to some extent, unless Serbia lost twice. Even though Cameroon lost their pervious match 0-1 against Switzerland, they also have a tough team in itself since they were able to press Switzerland at times. Things can be open here, depending on every outcome.
In Group H, Ghana has to at least draw South Korea to stay in the group. Portugal v. Uruguay, however, remains the biggest clash of tomorrow, considering both teams’ capabilities to press each other, all things considered. In that case, Portugal’s victory will mean their qualification to the knock-out stage, hence leaving the second qualifier spot wide open should Ghana draw: unless South Korea and Portugal wins, then South Korea and Uruguay would battle their way out to qualify.
Henceforth, the ball is round: anything can still happen until the final whistle blows. The third matches will serve as a decider for some, but it remains a dead rubber for the other. Should be fun to follow how the rest unpacks!
