𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐌𝐏𝐒, 𝐁𝐀𝐁𝐘

in which luke witnesses your shot at the national championship.

warnings; none that i can think of (may upset some wisconsin fans, sorry if this is too soon)

If you could tell the hockey gods to go to hell at this moment, you would not hesitate.

March 24, 2024. Whittemore Center Arena, University of New Hampshire. The University of Wisconsin vs. The Ohio State University. 2 vs. 1. A little over eight minutes left in the game. The score? 0-0.

Despite outshooting Wisconsin throughout the entire game, you had not scored a single goal. You had had a few close chances, sliding in past Wisconsin’s defensemen a few times, but just couldn’t convert. At this point, you were thanking Raygan for her outstanding performance in goal. But most definitely not the hockey gods.

The voice of Coach Muzerall fluttered through your ears as she told you all to give it everything you got. You were sure Mark Johnson was giving the same speech to his girls at the opposing bench, but honestly, you were too nervous to care. Your eyes wandered around the arena in hopes of finding the only person who could offer any comfort at the moment — Luke.

Unfortunately, Luke had missed the past few games of the NCAA tournament — even your earlier Frozen Four game against Clarkson — because of his schedule with the Preds. Luckily for you, the team was rewarded with a complete off day after their win over Detroit last night. So Luke did the only he could think of. He bought a plane ticket to Durham as soon as he landed in Nashville, and ubered to the arena in order to see you play. You woke up to a text saying that he’d be there, and were beyond excited (and relieved).

As you skated onto the ice in preparation to resume the game, you were able to locate him about halfway up in the stands. He was on his feet, decked up in his scarlet and gray apparel, with a buckeye necklace hanging around his neck. In his hands was a sign that read ‘BUCKEYES > BUCKY’. A small smile crept its way onto your face, wondering where he would have even gotten the materials to make it, but you didn’t care. His support meant everything.

After moving your eyes off of Luke, you focused on Cayla Barnes, who was stationed off to the right of you. She gave you a quick nod, and you knew she meant business. Just as you focused your attention back on the ice, the puck had dropped, with the Badgers winning the draw.

You quickly moved into your own zone, parking yourself in front of the nearest Wisconsin player, which happened to be Britta Curl. The puck passed back and forth between a few of the players before Laila Edwards ended up taking a shot. Raygan managed to kick save it out of your zone as most of your teammates went to make a line change.

They weren’t quick enough, however. Wisconsin had managed to quickly pass the puck out of their zone to center ice, where Curl was waiting patiently with her stick. The puck fell into line perfectly as she entered your zone. You rushed back as fast as you could as you saw Raygan prepare for a wrist shot, and somehow managed to poke the puck away as you tangled up with her. This time, the puck landed right on Cayla’s stick.

Cayla quickly rushed up ice as you let out a small breath. You followed suit, backing her up in case a Wisconsin player managed to steal the puck back. It didn’t take long, however, for Cayla to find Hannah Bilka at center ice, with Joy Dunne on her tail.

You held your breath as the puck landed on Joy Dunne’s stick. If there was one person who wasn’t going to fail you, it was her. She was your team’s leading point scorer with 38 points on the year (23 of which were goals), the WCHA Rookie of the Year, and the NCAA Rookie of the Year. Almost immediately, she sent the puck flying right past McNaughton’s glove and into the goal.

Cheers erupted from the ice, bench, and stands as you were swallowed up into a team huddle by the glass. Joy excitedly made an “O-H” with her hands before embracing you all and making her way to the bench. You smiled softly and looked up at the clock — 7:13 left in the third. You skated off the ice and Stephanie Markowski took your place by center ice.

Locating Luke again, a bright smile was plastered wide across his face as he watched the replay. He had met Joy, who you embraced as a little sister, when he had come to campus to visit you earlier during the all star break. Needless to say, he was proud of her, as anyone should be. What you didn’t know, however, is just how proud he was of you. Your defensive poke-check set the scoring play into motion and here you were just over seven minutes away from winning the national championship.

Time couldn’t have passed more slowly for you as the clock wound down. Wisconsin had created many more scoring opportunities, but just couldn’t convert (you had to thank Raygan once again). You were back on the ice with two minutes to go, scrambling back into the defensive zone as the Badgers pulled McNaughton in order to gain an extra attacker. Your heart raced as you saw Casey O’Brien rush onto the ice, skating swiftly towards your goal.

You knew nothing good was going to happen if you couldn’t calm down. So, as the puck was passed to Ava Murphy, you took a deep breath and raced in front of her as she wound up for a slap shot. As she let go of the puck, you dove in front of it, the puck redirecting off of your ankle and into neutral territory.

Man, did that hurt like a motherfucker. The crowd simultaneously grimaced and cheered for you as you recollected yourself off of the ice. You swear you could hear Luke’s voice yelling your name out of the entire crowd, telling you to get up and kick ass.

The puck was quickly regathered by Caroline Harvey as she circled through neutral ice, waiting for her teammates to reenter the zone. Once completed, the puck was passed to Lacey Eden as Emma Peschel tried to poke it away, but in vain. Caroline passed it to Charla Edwards, who lined up to take a shot from the blue line. None of your teammates were guarding her, so you did what you had to do. You once again skated up and prepared your body to be hit with a hard piece of vulcanized rubber. When it did, you fell to the ground, but got right back up as cheers erupted once again.

“Let’s go, Y/N!” Quinn Kuntz yelled from the bench, and you struggled to skate, but the puck had bounced right back to Edwards. Instead of trying to move around you, she wound up for another slap shot, but that one didn’t get past you either. The puck once again hit your body as you blocked the shot, falling to the ice once again. Finally, Emma was able to clear the zone as the puck raced towards the other end of the ice.

At that moment, you used your stick to propel you towards the bench. You knew you weren’t seriously injured — you’d just have a few bad bruises here and there — but your body hurt like a bitch from taking all of those shots. You were greeted with pats on the back from all your teammates on the bench as Hannah jumped back on in your place. You smiled softly as a response, focusing on the jumbotron to see the time left in the game.

One minute. If you could hold off Wisconsin for one minute, you would be a national champion. You watched anxiously as your teammates tried to clear the zone towards the now empty net of Wisconsin, but to no avail. Finally, Joy had managed to send it down the length of the ice, which forced a quick line change. You hopped on the ice with around 30 seconds left and made your way into the defensive zone yet again.

Since McNaughton was pulled, the Badgers had an extra attacker, which made it harder to defend your goal than usual. You weren’t going to give up that easily, however. The puck was passed back in forth between the six Badgers on the ice, each one of them waiting for the perfect shot. The clock wound down as the puck finally landed on Sophie Hegleson’s stick.

Everything seemed to move in slow motion. You could hear nothing as you once again forced yourself to skate in front of her, knowing that this goal would change the trajectory of the game. Your teammates were counting on you, so you were going to give it your all. You braced yourself for impact as the puck hit your back, your body sacrificing itself for the win exactly as the buzzer went off.

The game was over. You were officially a national champion. The sounds of your teammates yelling filled your ears as you let your body collapse to the ice, both in pain and in shock. You took your helmet off to gather yourself as a small smile made its way across your face. You had done it.

Emma skated over to you and pulled you up off of the ice, and you both rushed over to join the dog pile of your teammates on top of Raygan. Although you couldn’t see him, Luke was smiling down at you, a look of immense pride present on his face. He fumbled with the buckeye necklace hanging around his neck as he couldn’t contain his excitement, knowing that you were a national champion.

After you all had settled down and received your medals (but not before shaking hands and congratulating Wisconsin on their tremendous effort), you were allowed to bring family members and friends onto the ice to take pictures. As Luke made his way onto the ice, you excitedly skated over to him, and his arms were wide open to catch you. You smiled widely, your eyes shining brightly, “I did it, Luke. I really did it.”

He cupped your face with his hands, nodding his head in agreement, “You did it, my love. I’m so fucking proud of you.”

You smiled brightly up at him again, your eyes swelling with tears. Luke pulled you into another hug, gently kissing the top of your head, “Go celebrate with your teammates. I’ll be right here waiting for you when you’re done.” He reassured, giving you a soft smile as he wiped away some stray tears that had fallen with the pads of his thumbs. You nodded, skating over and joining Joy. When you were finally given the trophy after she did, you hoisted it high up into the air, ready to show it off to the entire world.

After all, it’s always been Ohio against the world.

one. luke and sophia

October 21, 2022

Maddox walked out of the locker room running a hand through his dripping wet hair, he saw Luke and Sophia outside waiting for him.

“Maddi!” Luke happily grinned seeing his brother for the first time in almost a month.

Maddox quickly walked to his brother pulling him into a hug, “Hi Moose.” Maddox smiled slighty before they pulled away, he looked towards his best friend, “Phia.” Sophia grinned pulling her best friend into a tight hug having missed him.

“Hi Maddi.” Sophia smiled at him before they pulled away, Sophia leaned her head on her boyfriend’s arm and held his hand, “So what do you want for dinner?”

“You guys pick i don’t care.” Maddox just shrugged happy to be seeing two of his favorite people.

“Alright.” Luke nodded and the three got into Luke’s car and Luke drove them to a little dinner place.

The three got seated in a booth in the restaurant and started looking at the menu.

“You had a good game.” Luke commented to his brother, Maddox having had two assists and a goal, the blackhawks winning 4-3.

“Yeah i was alright.” Maddox just shrugged off the compliment, Sophia smiled shaking her head knowing Maddox hates compliments.

The three ordered their food and started catching up while they waited.

Maddox anxiously twisted his ring around his finger and his leg wouldn’t stop bouncing, he knew he wanted to tell his family and he knew Sophia and Luke were the safest option, he took a deep breath before blurting out the words he has never said outside to anyone before, “I’m Bi.”

Sophia and Luke shared a soft look.

“I know bud.” Luke smiled comforting at his older brother and best friend.

“What?” Maddox eyes widen in shock as he looked at his smiling brother.

“Maddi you made out with a guy after one of our tournaments.” Luke deadpanned with a fond smile.

“Why didn’t you say anything.” Maddox questioned playing with his fingers.

“Because i wanted to wait until you were comfortable of coming out to me.” Luke reached across the table and grabbed Maddox’s hand, “I’m proud of you and you are always my brother.” Luke proudly smiled at Maddox.

Maddox had no idea how much he needed to hear those words.

He looked over at Sophia who was watching her two boys with a fond smile, “Oh i knew too.” Sophia grinned at Maddox, Maddox just fondly shook his head at her, “What i’m your bestfriend of course i knew.” Sophia shrugged having known for along time, “But i’m proud of you.” Sophia squeezed Maddox’s arm gently looking at him proudly.

“Thank you.” Maddox choked out feeling touched for getting so much support from the two.

January 24, 2023

Maddox was texting on his phone in the hotel lobby when he got a text from Quinn, he stood up putting his phone into his pocket and walked out into the cold Vancouver weather seeing Quinn waiting in his car.

“Hi Mads.” Quinn fondly smiled seeing his little brother, Maddox smiled and let Quinn hug him over the center console.

Maddox and Quinn were both more quiet of people and honestly like silence a lot more than talking so they sat in comfortable silence until Quinn pulled into his apartment building parking garage.

Maddox and Quinn walked up to Quinn’s apartment and they both hoped onto Quinn’s couch, Quinn handed the controller to his brother as he turned on the TV and game system.

After they played a few rounds Quinn looked over at his little brother seeing his anxious ticks and had a feeling Maddox needed to say something.

Quinn paused the game and set his controller down, “Alright spill.”

“What?” Maddox looked up from the controller and towards Quinn.

“Tell me, you have something to say.” Quinn raised an eyebrow at Maddox.

Maddox let out a nervous breath and nodded knowing he does have something to tell Quinn, Maddox planned to tell Quinn when he came out to Vancouver for the Blackhawks at Canucks game.

“I’m bi.” Maddox mummled out not wanting to look at Quinn when he told him.

Quinn nodded slowly always having a feeling and saw some signs but wanted to wait till Maddox was comfortable.

Quinn wrapped an arm around Maddox’s shoulder and pressed a kiss to the top of his fluffy hair, “Thank you for telling me.”

Maddox’s head shot up shocked, “Your not disgustied?” Maddox honestly was the most worried about Quinn and Jack finding out about his sexuality and not Luke.

“Maddi your my brother, i love you no matter what there’s nothing you could do to change that.” Quinn held Maddox’s face in his hands.

“Oh.” Maddox whispered out, He just burried his head into Quinn’s chest and felt protected in his brother’s arms.

Quinn frowned having a feeling that’s something happen that made Maddox believe that he would think he is disgusted and when Quinn is going to find out who thought they could hurt his brother and get away with it.

February 27, 2023

Maddox was laying on his back on the hotel bed next to Alex, they had just played their game againt the Ducks and had lost.

Maddox and Alex are always roommates on roadies and they usually end up watching a movie or show together.

Maddox looked a the ceiling before blurting out, “I’m bi.” Maddox tightly closed his eyes nervously.

Alex just nodded not even looking awya from the TV, “Ok.”

“Ok?” Maddox repeated confused, his eyes shot open and he turned on to side facing Alex.

Alex fondly rolled his eyes pausing the movie, “Dude i’ve seen you mack on a guy before, i’ve know for a while.”

“I know.” Maddox nodded having known Alex knew, “I was coming out to you, you dickhead” Maddox fondly rolled his eyes.

Alex made a face, “Oh, Well i’m proud of you for coming out.” Alex patted his best friend’s shoulder, “Now can we keep watching the movie.”

“Ass.” Maddox fondly chuckled shoving Alex.

“Bud? What’s wrong?” Maddox frowned in concern as he opened his front door hearing a knock, seeing Connor standing there with the saddest look on his face and tears in his eyes.

“I-“ Connor chocked out breathing heavily and just into forwards into Maddox’s comforting arms, Maddox frowned and wrapped his arms around around Connor gently rubbing his back as he walked them backward and closed his front door.

Maddox kept Connor in his arms leading them to his living room, Maddox sat down on his couch and Connor sat next to him hiding his face in Maddox’s chest.

“Do you want to talk about it?” Maddox quietly asked running his hands through Connor’s hair knowing it calms him down.

Connor took a deep breath and blurted out, “I think i’m gay.” Connor waited anxiously for Maddox to say anything. Connor was scared and Maddox always feels the safest.

“I’m so proud of you for telling me.” Maddox wrapped his arms around him tightly pressing a kiss to his head, Connor let out a sob of relief and couldn’t help but cry. Maddox frowned knowing exactly how he is feeling right now.

“I’m bi.” Maddox told Connor once Connor calmed down.

“You are?” Connor looked up at Maddox with his puppy eyes.

“I am, and i understand how scared you’rere feeling right now, but i promise i’m always on your side okay buddy.” Maddox promised him, Connor smiled softly not knowing how he would have made it through the last few years with Maddox being there for him always.

“Thank you for always being there for me.” Connor mumbled hiding his face back into Maddox’s chest.

“Always bud, Always.” Maddox held Connor until Maddox looked down hearing little snores and saw him fast asleep.

December 22, 2023

Maddox walked in the kitchen of his parents house and saw his mom in the kitchen, “Mom, i uh was wondering if we could go out just us today.” Maddox had his hands behind his back anxiously fidgeting.

Ellen looked up seeing Maddox looking tense and frowned slighty, “Of course Maddi. Would you like to go now?” Ellen smiled softly at her boy.

“Sure, Coffee?” Maddox mischievously smiled knowing he got his love for coffee from his mother.

“Of course.” Ellen replied having alreadly planned to go get coffee with Maddox today, loving when her boys are home but it’s always nice to have someone who loves getting coffee to go with her.

Ellen knew all of boys like the back of her hand and she could tell Maddox wanted to tell her something. She drove them to their favorite coffee shop in Michigan and drove them through the drive thru.

Ellen ordered their coffee before pulling up and paying at the window and getting handed the coffee’s, she handed Maddox his and held her as she parked them into the parking lot.

“Got something you wanna talk about Maddi?” Ellen questioned softly looking over at her son seeing him look nervous.

Maddox took a deep breath and looked at his mom, “I’m bi.” Maddox clenched his eyes not wanting to see her face when he tells her.

Ellen proudly smiled at her sun and she gently cupped his face, “Maddy look at me.” Maddox slowly opened his eyes and saw his mother still looking at him the exact same.

Maddox’s looked shocked, “Your not disappointed?”

“Maddox Hughes, i could never be disappointed in you.” Ellen sternly spoke looking directly at her son, “And it was kinda obvious with how you act around Trevor.” She gave him a knowing smile and glance making him blush and look away.

June 15 2024

Maddox and Trevor both got to the lake house late last night having both been busy since the end of the season.

Maddox had to spend a week doing some captain stuff at the end of the season so Trevor left to LA to visit his friends and Jamie was joining him as well and to also pack up or get rid of the rest of the stuff at his Condo in LA. Maddox then went to watch some of Quinn’s playoff games and spend that time with his parents and Quinn before he headed out on a vacation catching up with his old teammates and their families from Tampa bay.

Jack also spent some time out in the Jersey Shore with his friends while Luke went to Michigan to see his friends and girlfriend and Quinn was in the playoffs.

Now all of the Hughes brothers got to the lake house the last few days. Maddox knew it was only a matter of time before all of the friends and teammates came over so he knew that he wanted to tell his brothers and best friend quickly about Trevor and him.

Luckily for Trevor and Maddox everyone was too tired to even notice that Trevor went with Maddox into Maddox’s instead of his normal guest room.

Trevor woke up looking down at his chest seeing Maddox peacefully sleeping on his arw chest, Trevor hummed contently and he could tell everyone else were still asleep besides Quinn.

Trevor hoped that everything went well with them telling everyone today.

Trevor eventually got Maddox out bed and Trevor headed down stairs before Maddox and saw Quinn cooking breakfast and Sophia eating with Luke resting his head on her arm looking like he was going to fall asleep again and Jack texting on his phone.

“What’s for breakfast Quinner!” Trevor grinned happily knowing it will get on Quinn’s nerves.

“Food.” Quinn deadpanned with a small smirk as he scooped some of the eggs onto a plate for Trevor and handed it to him.

Maddox came down a few minutes later looking like a zombie still half asleep as he stumbled straight to the coffee machine and quickly started drinking the black coffee he poured into his mug. Trevor fondly shook his head.

Maddox just shoved the food into his mouth as he was on his second cup of coffee.

Everyone else was just finished eating, Trevor looked over at Maddox giving him a look and Maddox nodded.

Trevor hopped up, “Jacky Boy, can i talk to you?” Trevor questioned as he gestured to the outside.

“Yeah sure man?” Jack answered following him outside.

“What’s that about?” Luke noisily questioned looking a Maddox for an answer.

“He’s telling Jack we are dating.” Maddox blunty told them drinking his coffee.

Sophia squealed, “Oh my god!! Finally!!!!” She hurried up and hugged Maddox.

“Thanks Phi.” Maddox mumbled to his best friend.

“Huh, took you long enough.” Luke shrugged not suprised they are together especially because Trevor has obviously been in love with Maddox for a long time.

“Out of anyone it had to be Trevor.” Quinn groaned teasing his brother.

“I know.” Maddox quipped back.

“Why is Trevor telling Jack?” Sophia questioned, wondering why Maddox or Trevor didn’t just tell them all together.

Maddox kind of froze up setting his coffee cup down, “I uh didn’t want to be the one to tell Jack.”

Quinn, Luke and Sophia shared a concerned look.

“Why not?” Quinn gently asked.

Maddox just shrugged, “We should make sure they aren’t killing each other out there.” Maddox weakly avoided the question and started walking to the backyard and the three followed him.

Jack and Trevor would outside, “Why’d we go outside Z?”

“I’m dating someone.” Trevor told him.

Jack eyes widen and he nodded, “Woah that’s great Z! How long?”

“Three months.” Trevor answered shortly.

“Three?!” Jack looked shocked knowing Trevor never has relationships that long.

“Look i’m dating a guy and i’m Bi, and if you have a problem with that.” Trevor coldly spoke to someone he once considered a best friend.

“What! No! Of course not!” Jack denied quickly he would never have a problem with that.

“I’m dating Maddox.” Trevor told him.

Jack opened his mouth in shock, “Maddi? My brother?” Jack looked incredibly shocked not thinking his brother is Bi or Gay.

“Yes.” Trevor curtly told Jack.

The two didn’t realize that the others had just walked into the back porch.

“He didn’t tell me?” Jack looked hurt, Maddox and him use to tell each other everything.

“And why do you think that is?” Trevor sarcastically asked crossing his arms over his chest.

“What Why?” Jack stammered out.

Quinn titled his head as he watched the two, he didn’t know there was a reason Maddox didn’t tell Jack because he thought Maddox did tell him.

“Do you remember what you said about him.” Trevor coldly questioned glaring at Jack, Jack frantically shook his head.

Luke and Quinn shared a look not liking where this is going. They never knew Jack has said something about Maddox.

“You said that he would never be gay, he isn’t. Hughes aren’t like that and Maddox would never be with a guy especially Z.” Trevor quoted exactly what Maddox told him.

Jack’s eyes widen and his face paled as he remembered when he said that, “I was drunk!” Jack protested quickly, Jack didn’t even think Maddox heard his words.

Quinn and Luke both look extremely angry as they now realized why Maddox didn’t come out to them for so long and why he was so scared.

Sophia felt her heart break knowing that Jack might not have meant the words but they definitely meant a lot to Maddox hearing them.

“You were but the words you said to Maddox wasn’t correct, do you even know how much they impacted him, you made him scared to come out to his own family.” Trevor sneered feeling his jaw shaking with emotion.

Maddox looked down at the floor, Quinn clenched his jaw shaking his head and wrapped his arm around his brother.

“I-“ Jack was wide eyed as he realized how his actions affected his little brother, Jack knew over the years that Maddox and him have not been at close and Jack just assumed it was because they lived so far away from each other but now he’s realizing it’s because he hurt his little brother.

“I don’t care if he is gay or bi, he’s my little brother. I really didn’t want him to be thinking about his sexuality when he was about to be drafted to the NHL because i knew it would be harder for him.” Jack admitted he didn’t want his brother to have to hide, “I love him no matter what and i’m glad that he has you.” Jack saw a new side of his best friend and he knew Trevor was good for Maddox.

Trevor nodded and turned away and walked back up to the pouch because he knew the others had walked outside, Trevor saw Maddox looking overwhelmed and wrapped his arm around him and started walking inside with him and Trevor nodded at the thankful look that Quinn gave him.

Jack watched the two with guilt and regret all over his face, Quinn and Luke looked at him with anger and disappointment. Sophia shook her head and headed inside.

'the first meeting'

angela pulled her shy and quiet cousin piper, from her room one evening, forcing her to participate in the group shenanigans. piper sighed, letting her cousin drag her from her room after putting up quite a fight. she argued that her midterm essay was more important than whatever was going on in the living room. which to be frank it was, but to angela she wanted piper to meet the somewhat flashy, arrogant and charismatic colton dach. best friend to her boyfriend, nolan allan. a golden retriever and black cat, match made in heaven angela and nolan believed.

nolan spotted her from the living room, as he looked to the kitchen which peaked in just a bit in his view. "ah my favorite ricci!" he said jumping up and going over to greet the girl. angela and piper were the closest of the cousins, practically sisters because of being the same age. therefore, once nolan came into the picture, he took her in as a sister. "ahh yes, one of the annoying canadian's." she huffed filling her water bottle. "hey now, you've got more in there that could fit that bill." he mused pulling her in for a bear hug. "watch the hair, dude." she gritted causing angela to laugh heartedly. "ok come on you two." she said pushing the two towards the 2008 mario kart competition that was happening between nolan, colton, bedard, reichel, vlasic, and korchinski. "she's hereee!" angela announced and piper rolled her eyes. "if it isn't the famous piper!" vlasic said causing piper to roll her eyes, "hi alex, nice to see you again." she said sitting down beside him on the couch. the other guys looked over to wave and introduce themselves. colton was the furthest from the girl, sitting on the ground, and waited his turn to say hi. as soon as the two locked eyes, he felt himself get incredibly nervous. his stomach filled with Butterflies. she gave him a small smile before snatching the controller from vlasic and taking over for him. "oh oh its on!" nolan announced, ready to or at least attempt to beat the skilled girl. "you have to realize at some point babe, that you are never going to beat her. not with her constantly playing by herself." angela said without filtering what she was going to say. "you say that if it's a bad thing, angie." alex said quickly defusing the situation and taking the blow just a bit. piper swallowed hard, focusing in on her character. she gave a small nod to alex, thanking him. colton watched from his spot on the floor, before turning back toward the screen. he was intrigued by that little comment.

'callin me babe'

it was a few weeks later when piper was by herself at the apartment finishing up some textbook reading when she heard a knock at her door. she looked at the time, and knew that angela was still in class so it couldn't be her. unless she forgot her keys ofcourse. piper hopped off the kitchen barstool and headed over towards the door, and she was surprised at who she found on the other side. "hey colton, right?" she asked and he nodded. a small blush appearing over his cheeks. "how can i help ya?" she asked, opening the door further for him to enter. "i left something here a few days ago, and nolan said i could come over and grab it. or well downstairs." he said chuckling just a bit. "oh, yeah for sure! you live upstairs?" she asked and he nodded, going to retrieve the item. "yeah, i just started a sublease for the time being." he said coming back into the kitchen where she was. "oh nice!" piper said from behind the counter. colton walked back in and stared at the girl for a few seconds, "i couldn't find it." he said and her eyebrows creased a bit. "nolan should be back from the store soon, do you wanna wait here until then?" she offered and he nodded. "you can watch tv or play the wii or do whatever. ill just be in here if you need anything." she said smiling softly and he nodded. "what are you working on?" he asked as she sat back down. "uhh just some light case reading." she joked, flipping the 3rd page of the 12 page case study. she unclasped her highlighter, and read the first line when colton spoke again. "angela said you're studying psychology right?" he asked and she nodded, continuing to read. "that's neat, she said you wanna do non profit work?" he questioned and she looked up from her packet and nodded at him. "yeah, how much other info has she given out about me?" she asked half serious. though, colton couldn't tell. "uhhh...." he stuttered and she giggled. "I'm kidding, i promise. its always nice keeping you hockey players on your toes." she hummed, sipping her water. "oh really?" he asked cocking an eyebrow, leaning across the counter in front of her. "ah huh. nolan is easy ofcourse, little shit. and then alex can catch it sometimes but he's still a dummy." she explained causing colton to laugh. "nolan is special, what can we say?" he played and she giggled. colton thought for a second, "you and alex?" he questioned and piper caught on. "oh god no! angela and i have known him since we were younglings. our two brothers used to play hockey with him. he's family." piper said shaking her head. colton nodded, "why do you ask?" piper questioned. colton thought for a few seconds before responding, "had to know if i had a chance with ya." he said confidently. piper looked down at her case study before looking at him, anxiety rising within her body. "is that so?" she quirked and he smiled. "ya know it babe." he mused, causing her to blush.

it had been a few weeks since then and spring break was now rolling around for the girl. the two still hadn't gone out with one another due to her cramming last-minute essays in and him away on the road. though they had hung out with the group a few times, over dinner after a game or a sunday brunch which was piper and angela's favorite thing to do. colton made his way down from upstairs with two cups of coffee this rainy and foggy, monday morning. he let himself in with a key nolan had given him and korchinski who was colton's roommate. "morning lovebirds." colton announced walking into the living room and angela flipped him off from under the blanket. nolan laughed softly, "long night, I'm sure piper is feeling the same." nolan explained and colton's eyebrows crinkled. "she drank?" he asked and nolan nodded. "i thought she didn't." he said and nolan shrugged, "she got a bad grade. she's upset about it." angela groaned, and colton nodded walking down the hall towards piper's room. he knocked softly, hearing the box fan on the other side and quickly slipped in. piper was awake but had her eyes shut, "hey babe." colton said softly, setting down the coffee on her bedside table. she turned over and smiled softly, "hi." she said opening one eye to look up at him. she looked lovely in his eyes, her brunette hair laid across the pillow, her green eyes lighting up in the sun that peeked through her blinds and the softness of her voice, laced it all together. "i was just thinking about this, thankyou." she hummed sitting up and pulling the cup to her chest. she looked back up at colton and padded the spot next to her. he nodded, walking over and hopping in. this was not the first time he'd ended up in her bed. the other three times were from becoming too tired or exhausted to go back upstairs to his own bed. that was it, nothing else. she sat against the headboard, shutting her eyes for a few seconds. it was instant, she felt his eyes on her. "can you not?" she teased, setting her coffee down and turning over on her side. colton set his down and turned on his side to face the girl, watching as he did so. "hi babe." she hummed, smiling. "whats your plan for the day?" she asked, and he looked up as if he had to think. but he wanted one thing, "whatever you're doing." and that made her smile. "well, if dancemoms is on your schedule than perfect, cause i have nothing else to do." she said cheekily. he laughed, "ofcourse! what else would i want to do on a rainy day." he responded filling her with butterflies. "good." she hummed. "good." he responded, "now that we have that settled, which season are we watching?" he questioned, and she smiled widely jumping up a bit. "season 2 the best one of all!" she said excitedly, turning on her tv.

'king of my heart'

it was now thursday of that week, and the blackhawks had pulled out a huge win against the detroit red wings, with the team having the rest of the week off; the little group of younglings - well hooligans according to piper, were on their way back to their apartment after a long dinner. piper drove her and colton through the city streets, as she felt concerned about him driving in the city. she commented on his driving one day they went to get starbucks together with korchinski and she felt as if she was going to die as they were michigan avenue. she took her right hand off the wheel and laid it down on the middle console as the two were only a few blocks away from the apartment itself. colton took that opportunity to grab ahold of it, causing her to blush. they pulled into the parking garage, with colton not wanting to let go of the girl's hand. she took her time collecting her things from the console and making sure his seat was back in it's original spot, so he took that chance to walk over and open the door for her. "why, thankyou." she beamed, taking the hand outstretched for her. "ofcourse m'lady." and she laughed at the dorkiness. the two walked through the garage, holding eachother's hand seeing nolan and angela walking on the other side of it.

piper smiled at angela who was skipping around nolan, pretty thankful and happy they beat the wings. as they got closer, piper could hear the lyrics coming out excitedly from the 5'5 girl, causing her to laugh. as soon as the chorus came up, piper joined in, screaming at the top of their lungs; doing the little 'one goal' dance from the previous era. "oh god." vlasic said walking with korchinski, bedard and reichel. the cousins took each others hand and spun around in a circle, "i fear angela may have had too much to drink tonight." nolan said laughing, as they tried to move the two along. "how rude!" angela defended, causing the group to laugh. "none of yall are allowed to come over. not even you nol baby." she said leaning on her cousin, "nol baby that's a good one!" colton said laughing, with nolan rolling his eyes.

the group made it up to the apartment, music on swiftly and drinks given out. piper took a seltzer and headed over towards her room for a brief moment, to put her hawks jersey back in the closet. she heard a knock at the door, and she knew it was colton. she turned towards alex instead, and she had a perplexed look on her face. "hey bud." she said shutting her closet door. alex sat on the bed, well sprawled out on it. "whats up? girl troubles?" she teased, laying down from the opposite side. he chuckled, "you could say that." he said coolly. she rolled onto her side, putting her head in her hand. "well as much as i would love to talk about girl drama, we've got to celebrate." she said slapping his chest softly. "i feel so loved." he huffed, standing up and began to walk out. she pushed him out and saw colton coming down the hall. she leaned on the threshold and smirked as he got closer, "what can i do for ya?" she mused, kicking the door open wider for him to walk in. she shut the door behind them, and she sat down on her bed and he followed, now sprawling out himself. she looked down at him, crossing one leg underneath her. she quirked an eyebrow, as he sat up. he did not break eye contact, as he leaned in. his mouth so close to hers, she felt his breath on hers. he leaned in a few inches more, and connected the two's lips. oh how she'd been waiting for this, she thought. she wrapped her arms around his neck as his found her lower back. slowly pushing her into her pillows, they broke the kiss after a few more seconds. he pulled back just a bit to read her face, pushing a strand of hair behind her ear. she would not make eye contact. "been waiting to do that for some time." he said blushing nervously, and she met his eye. "been waiting for ya to do that for a bit too." she hummed, pulling him back in. the taste of your lips, is my idea of luxury.

he was the one she had been waiting for some time, a best friend and lover in one. somebody to be the king of her heart.

the season was winding down now, just as her school year was finishing as well. the two falling for each other more and more, over the course of a month and a half. trying not to think about how he would be going back to canada and she'd be staying here in chicago with her parents, and older brother. the two had kept what was theirs a secret, not wanting to bring the group in just yet. though angela had a sneaky suspicion, based on how happy piper was. her black cat personality was opening just a bit more. the two spent countless nights together, colton sneaking in and out of the apartment late and night and early in the morning before anybody could spot him missing. or she would go up to his. the bedroom becoming their sacred place to talk about life, their biggest hopes and dreams, what makes them tick, their family and so much more. but they did so much more, together. colton would pick her up after class and the two would get coffee or food, maybe hit a museum or the navy pier. sometimes a matinee. she was showing him, her chicago, and what made her fall in love with the city at a young age. she was bespoken with the city and all the opportunities it possessed. he saw a different side of her when the two were in public, he saw how much of a free spirit she was. things were quickly becoming more serious between the two, and that win over detroit night cemented it.

that night he saw a different side of her, one that he had been slowly peeling back for some time. she was quiet and shy by nature but had a rambunctious side to her. angela watched as the two did a rendition of 'wonderwall' at the apartment, and the look that colton had in his eyes; she knew that the two were smitten with one another. and she knew that piper was completely and wonderfully comfortable with him, something she had never had with a guy up until that point. she had fallen for the canadian, him fully captivating her heart.

angle and piper were having their morning cups of coffee on a saturday morning, piper reading a book and angela finishing up her morning tiktok. "has..has colton said anything to colton about what he plans to do now since the season is over?" piper asked shyly. angela thought for a second, thinking how she wanted to break the information she pried out of nolan a few nights back. "uhh not too sure, i know he plans to go home and stuff. he said he had some people to see." angela said trying to end the conversation, by standing up and getting some more coffee. "oh, okay." piper said putting her bookmark in the spine and shutting it. maybe i was just a little fling? or not even on at all? "I'm gonna head over to my parents." piper said standing up and walking back to her room. angela sighed, pinching the crease of her nose. nolan walked through the door, and walked over towards the kitchen. "hey love." he said kissing her and moving towards the fridge for a water bottle. "has dach said anything about piper? she's currently freaking out." angela whispered yelled and nolan connected the dots. "oh, no he hasn't. but he did mention his ex reaching back out to him. as we were clearing out our lockers." nolan said feeling bad, and angela nodded. "if you'd like to go tear him a new one, by all means you have my support babe." he said and they heard a bag drop. piper dropped her overnight bag, hearing the full conversation. "ill see yall later." she said grabbing her water bottle from before and heading towards the front door. nolan looked up, cursing dach.

colton hadn't responded to her text three days ago, and now she figured out why. she understood, and she was glad that they hadn't done anything that would have made it harder for her to get over him. she threw her bag into the trunk and slammed it, and headed towards the drivers side. she put on some music, and pulled out rather quickly. not realizing the car coming from her left to be colton's and Kevin's. the two saw her pissed-off demeanor as she drove by, not acknowledging them. "ohh you fucked up." kevin said as they parked. colton sighed getting out. piper drove 20 minutes through traffic toward her family's lincoln park townhouse and parked down the street. she unlocked the door, and threw her bag down at the door heading towards the kitchen. "oh hi hun, how are you?" her mom asked as she and her dad came into view. she looked at her mom and began to sob. "oh hun." her mom said wrapping her arms around her daughter, and rubbed her back; her and her husband's heart breaking.

her mom massaged her back a little while later, as the two were now in her bedroom talking. "i really liked him ma, i really did. he hasn't responded to my messages and now i find out he's talking to his girlfriend again whos probably the first person he's seeing when he gets back home." she cried. this was the first time she heard about colton, her daughter being famously closed off from the family. not for any particular reason, but she was just quiet. the brunch that was supposed to be the meeting between her parents and colton never happened. a few days with food poisoning prevented him, and therefore she never brought him up. "what if i was just a fling? or what if i wasn't even that?" she sobbed, as her older brother opened the door. she turned her to see who it was, and she put her face in her comforter embarrassed. "what has my baby sis so upset?" he asked sitting up against the bed next to her. she sniffled, "is it boy problems?" he questioned and she nodded after a few seconds. "i'm sorry pipes." he said rubbing her back. "can i stay here for a few days?" she asked and her mom nodded quickly. "ofcourse hun, perfect timing with your semester ending too. eric can retrieve some things from the apartment if you'd like." she said volunteering her son who nodded. "can you get anna the bunny?" she questioned looking at her brother. anna the bunny was a build a bear bunny, that was the very last gift her grandfather gave to her as a kid shortly before he died. she cherished that stuffed animal more than anything. "ofcourse, ill call angela to let me in." he said smiling before kissing her temple. "ill be back." he said shutting the door behind him.

he was the king of her heart, but maybe she wasn't the queen to his.

she had made up her mind, she was better off alone.

he drove over to the apartment, quickly pulled into the guest parking spot and headed up the elevator. "please act civilized you two, we have a guest." angela threatened towards nolan and colton who were arguing with one another, about piper. "eric hey, good to see you too." she said hugging her cousin. "ill show you where everything is." she announced, pulling him through the living room. "nol." eric said fist bumping nolan who nodded at him, "her stuff is in here." angela said opening her door. "whos that?" colton whispered to nolan who chuckled. "that's her older brother, asshole." nolan said walking over towards the two in the other room. "whatcha doing?" he asked leaning against the threshold watching as eric and angela packed a bag. "I'm grabbing some stuff for pipes. she staying at home for a bit." eric explained and nolan nodded. "why?" he asked, and eric sighed. "cuz of some asshat who played her." eric said a bit angrily. "oh." nolan responded, before walking back out. "you are dead." he said sitting down on the couch in front of colton. "does she need anything else?" angela asked as the two walked out, eric clutching the bear in his right hand tightly. "uh i don't think so. if not, ill swing back around." he said. "sorry i didn't introduce myself, I'm eric - piper's older brother." he said holding out a hand for colton to shake. "colton." he said nervously as eric put two and two together. "you little shit!" he said angrily, and colton took a step back. "you know you hurt her right?" he threw out and colton nodded. "you do, do you? then why haven't you said anything to maybe clear things up huh? or are you too busy using her to get back with your ex?" eric asked heatedly. "nobody knows about us. your sister and i. nobody knew-" angela cut him off, "we suspected." "i never told anybody, nor did she. and i don't want to get back with my ex, she reached out to me, but i never responded. and the reason i haven't responded to your sister is because i've been busy preparing to go back home. but i wasn't going to not talk to her about us, ok? i planned to today but then she drove off and i realized i blew my chance. once i got back today, i was going to come up here to talk. i swear to you!" colton defended himself. eric thought for a moment before looking at nolan and angela, "you have to believe me." colton pleaded and eric sighed. "do you know who gave piper this bunny?" eric asked, knowing that if he knew then he cared for the girl and vice versa. nobody knew who gave the bunny because it meant so much to her. colton smiled softly "your grandfather when she was 9 before he died. her most prized possession." he said and eric sighed. "clearly you mean a lot to her, because she doesn't tell anybody that." angela explained. "hell, nolan doesn't even know and we've been dating for three years already." angela added. "i promise you i wasn't leading her on or anything, i care very much for your sister. i had planned to make things official and ask her to come to canada this summer." colton said hoping it would get through to eric. eric nodded, "i hope youre right." he paused before looking at angela, "angela will give you our address. I'm sure my little sis would like to see you and clear all this up." eric said before walking out.

colton knocked on the front door of piper's family house, and bit the inside of his cheek, plagued with nerves. the door opened to reveal a brunette women, piper's mom. "you must be colton." she said and he nodded nervously, "come in." she smiled opening the door for him. he saw an older man on the couch, look over and do a double take. "you must be pipers dad, im-" he cut him off, "yeah i know who you are." he huffed before looking back at the news program. "she's upstairs,first door on the left." her mom said placing a hand on his upper back. "its fine, you can go." she said when he looked back at her husband. he nodded, taking the steps two at a time. piper was on the other side, watching the office, hoping that michael scott would help her laugh but it wasn't working. her mind twisting and turning with thoughts, that would not shut up. she perked up a bit when she heard a knock at her door and she got up when nobody walked in. she opened it rubbing her eye, and stopped as she took in who was at her door. "colton?" she questioned before he placed his hands on her lips, taking a step into the room. she shut the door behind him, wrapping her hands around his wrists. their lips fitting together like before, one's that were addicting. she pulled back, resting her forehead on his head. she stared at his chest, before looking up. "what was that for?" she questioned, "had to take my chance, incase it was the last time you'd allow me to." he said and she frowned at how nervous his voice was. "colton." she softly whined, pulling him in for a hug. "i did not mean to hurt you pipe, not for one second. i promise." he began and she nodded, "and i never responded to my ex. she was the one to reach out and i deleted it. because-because i am deeply and madly entranced and quite frankly, besotted with a 5'2 brunette midwest gal who could watch the office at all hours, who adores coffee runs, a good detroit beating and most importantly, the girl who has captured my heart." he confessed. she pulled back with tears in her eyes, "colton, i-i- " she paused breathing in and out deeply through her nose. "why did you not respond to my messages? why did you leave me hanging?" she asked, and he shook his head. "no important or monumental reason, i just hadn't responded which is a dumb response but its true. kevin and i have been busy with the apartment, and finishing the end of media for the season and just my parents have been on me about coming home. don't for one second, think i was gonna leave you hanging for the whole summer. i was actually coming to talk to you when you drove past me like a mad man." he chuckled and she giggled. "i was coming to ask you to become my girlfriend officially, and was seeing if you wanted to come to canada with me." he said searching her eyes. she smiled widely, "well its a good thing you've become the king of my heart dacher. you are quite literally the one I've been waiting for, for so long." she paused as he smiled. "one problem though." she started up again and he quirked an eyebrow. "i need a passport." she confessed, and that made him laugh. "give me about a month and a half, and you can book me a flight." she grinned and he chuckled. "oh so I'm buying you a ticket now?" he grinned, "wouldn't have it any other way." he smiled pulling her in for a kiss.

all at once, this was enough. he had his american queen, and her canadian king. king and queen of each others heart, all was well.
