You know that scene in the first H.ow To Train Your D.ragon movie where Hiccup gives Toothless a fish and then gets a piece of it back? That's Stoplight, because if he really likes your character, he'll catch a fish or a seagull for you and won't let you leave until you've eaten a piece of it.

Melbourne
After I was in Sydney I flew over to Melbourne for a few days. I met Lindsay’s family (who I love they’re super nice people) and tagged along on a little road trip. We went to the twelve apostles and the great ocean road which was insanely beautiful. When we first got there it was sunny, so we walked down the path to take pictures and it immediately started hurricane-ing on us. There are some pretty funny pictures from it and also probably some water damage. We all looked like drowned rats the rest of the day. After that we decided to make a run for it back up the path, we get to the end and it’s sunny again. Of course. So we took a different trail that went by a bunch of sheep and went to the other apostles. After that we got in the car and it immediately started pouring and hailing again and this time it didn’t stop. It was fine with me though because that just meant I got to sleep in the car to the sounds of rain which is always nice. One thing about spending so much time in the car is that it has officially goofed me up. After being here for about a month and then I’d watch an American tv show I’d only get tripped up for a minute as to which side of the road they’re supposed to be on or which side to get into the car, but now it’s hopeless. I was watching a movie with a car accident because someone was on the wrong side of the road and I still couldn’t tell who was at fault and had to figure out whose fault it was based on context. Guess I won’t be driving for a bit when I get home. Catch me turning left on a red and driving faster in the right lane than the left lane to pass.
After the road trip I headed into the city for a couple days. This was basically me walking around taking pictures of street art and sitting in various cafes (the typical Melbourne trip.) Lindsay and I went on the Skydeck which was 88 floors up and my ears popped in the elevator like they did when I was at the restaurant called R2L in Philadelphia. (Also shout out to the vikes this weekend rip eagles) (pretty much only brought up the restaurant in philly to bring up the fact that the Vikings won) Anyway. The next day I spent wandering around St. Kilda and sat on the pier reading for a bit then went to a beach bar and had mussels and a pina colada for dinner because it was my last day of my trip. I went back to the pier and sat in the café and watched the waves and drank tea because it was a bit chilly out and I had to wait for sunset. Sunset is when the penguins come out. Yes. Penguins. The St. Kilda pier is the home of the world’s smallest species of penguin and they come out to eat just after sunset. I stood outside for about 2 hours in a temperature that is considered cold for me coming from Brisbane, but probably tolerable for just about everyone else. I waited until I saw a penguin and then immediately ran away because I had had enough of that weather. The penguin was ADORABLE as you could probably guess. Please google them if you are having a bad day, you will not be disappointed.
So that just about wraps up my spring break! There was no easing back into school after that though, I had a lot to do but you know what I’m ok with it because all of my projects and quizzes are done the week before Halloween except one so I’ll have over a month of just chillin and traveling. My next trip is to New Zealand with Lindsay from Nov. 3 to Nov.12, then sadly it’s move out day on the 18th. But hey my family comes to visit me then and I get to show them around Brisbane and then we get to go back to Cairns which I’m super excited for. Oh yeah and speaking of Cairns, I’m getting my divers certification this week! (Cairns reminded me of it because that’s where the great barrier reef is and the first place I ever went diving.) I guess I’ll update you guys if I don’t drown in the process of how that went.

Travel with Wakana on her Journey to Catch a Shark Vol. 1 🦈
Note: Here’s the second section I translated, this time I decided to do Wakana’s part. Without further ado, enjoy! 〈(•ˇ‿ˇ•)-→
When you think of Wakana, the first thing that comes to mind are sharks, when you think of sharks, the first thing that comes to mind is Wakana…it is certainly no exaggeration to say that (!) Among fans, Wakana’s love for sharks is a well-known fact. In this series you will read reports about an almighty love for sharks, about a woman traveling all across Japan to visit each and every aquarium in order to catch a shark.
Tumblr media
We are at Shinagawa Aquarium! The entrance has a very retro atmosphere. The ticket is bought. Let’s go! There are also some penguins fluttering around. In just a moment we’ll move on to the shark corner. In this tank, there are two huge shirowani (sand tiger sharks). AMAZING!
◆In our first issue we start in Tokyo 「I went to the 『Shinagawa Aquarium』 in Tokyo’s Shinagawa district~. This aquarium has lockers in the entrance area, it really feels like a proper aquarium! You get a real retro vibe, it’s great (‐^▽^‐)  Also, they have shirowani (sand tiger sharks) at this aquarium! When I bought my ticket, the staff members told me that the dolphin show was about to start in a bit but I think I only watched it for about a minute or so *laughs* However, the dolphin pool is quite big and impressive, it was great to watch the dolphins in an open-air show!」 ◆ How about your reason for visiting the aquarium, the sand tiger sharks? 「Shirowani are SO big! Their face may look a little evil but they are actually very docile~Ahhhhh, they are so cool! It is one of the biggest among all shark species, it’s definitely among the biggest animals in the Shinagawa Aquarium. If they had even bigger animals, shirowani might actually turn evil *laughs* Of course sharks are very big but I also love their typical shark-like fangs! In case they ever lose some teeth, those teeth will steadily grow back. That’s why you can see a lot of teeth at the bottom of the fish tank. Also, I bought a lot of shark goods ~Right now my entire house is filled with shark themed things. Originally I only liked sharks but I wasn’t really into any of the merchandise but now I have everything, from smartphone stand, to tissue box, to plush toys…etc… It’s just all so cute!!!」 ◆What made you fall in love with sharks in the first place? 「After I had seen the movie Jurassic Park I went to look at many dinosaur fossils, during one exhibiton, I saw a fossil that really caught my attention, it was the fossil of an ancient shark called “Megalodon” which apparently preyed on big whales and giant squids. To think that something THIS big once lived in our seas!! *laughs* From then onwards, I started going to aquariums to look at still existing sharks.」 ◆ I see! 「I recently went to the 「Marine World Uminonakamichi」 in Fukuoka, the sand tiger sharks are swimming around in the aquarium with other fish. Even when one of the divers tried feeding them, they didn’t eat anything. Sand tiger sharks apparently don’t eat a lot in relation to their body size. Also, it seems that their teeth are almost like claws! Once they bite, they won’t let go, the strength behind their bites is amazing!」 ◆ Didn’t you buy an annual pass for 「Marine World」? 「Yes, I did! If you wanna know more details, please check out my blog post *laughs*」 ◆ And once you had your fill of the aquarium, you also enjoyed some gyoza? 「Ōmori and Kamata are famous for their gyoza so I had to…First I am enjoying the cool air in the aquarium while getting all hyped and heated by watching sharks. Eventually it became an established practice to combine my visit with a great meal. Well, next time let’s eat shark!!」 ◆ Ehh? (What kind of next issue will it be? Everyone, please look forward to Vol.2!!)
Tumblr media
Its size is comparable to the span of my two extended arms. Shirowani are huge! Since the hall was empty, I got the shark all to myself. It seems like Wakana was content and happy just looking at the sharks from beginning to end. Wakana explained that shirowani can store air in their stomachs which makes them float. It really does seem like they are floating so watching them is very pleasant. There’s also a restaurant at the Shinagawa Aquarium. I bought various shark goods at the souvenir shop. I found a shirowani plush toy! See, I caught a shirowani!!! I tried on a shark rucksack. So cute!!! To finish off my trip, gyoza! *laughs* Shinagawa Aquarium => Gyoza are my recommended meal!
Tumblr media
Left: Shirowani are sharing the tank with various other fish. Right: Even in her private time, Wakana comes across sharks. She discovered another shark rucksack and had to try it on again *laughs*

Hike to the top of Bartolome Island in the Galapagos
When you are traveling around the world you quickly realize that many attractions require the need for climbing of some sort (see the Bucket List of 15 Things to Climb in the World for exhausting examples). When I heard that it was 374 steps uphill to the peak of Bartolome Island in the Galapagos, I began having flashbacks of the 463 steps to the top of Florence’s Duomo.
Climbing that wasn’t pretty. It was where I learned that a 78-year-old great grandmother was in better physical shape than me. Painful. On so many levels.
But, the peak of Bartolome Island was known to have the most perfect view of the famous Pinnacle Rock. There was no way that the avid bucket lister in me would miss scaling this volcanic cone to see a unique perspective of one of the most photographed natural structures in the Galapagos Islands.
So the journey began to the land where the human population is ZERO…
We took a panga from our home on the water, Ecoventura’s Letty yacht, and disembarked on the dock of Bartolome Island where a sea lion basking in the sun greeted us. The islet, located in Sullivan Bay to the east of Santiago Island, was barren besides two small groups of visitors and a few lazy lava lizards.
The gang that I was with eagerly started to ascend the 600 meter trail, a planked walkway which protects the lunar-like landscape from human erosion.
The beginning of the hike had the slightest incline, which allowed me to enjoy the mostly brown land that looked like it was straight from an episode of Star Trek.
A variety of volcanic formations lined the trail: spatter cones, lava tubes and lava bombs.
We even made a pit stop in order to hold a large lava rock, which looked as if it would be incredibly heavy, but really weighed mere ounces.
This was looking like something straight out of a cartoon.
Continuing on, the path steepened. The smooth walkway turned into stairs and my gasping for breath increased. I knew this was coming.
I stopped to “take photos”, a disguise for getting a moment to catch my breath.
After about a half hour we reached the top. The summit not only rewarded us with a spectacular view of Pinnacle Rock, but also Daphne Major, Daphne Mindor and the rest of Santiago Island.
As always when climbing things while traveling, the view from the 114 meter summit was worth every step.It turned out to be a great addition to my list of the top things to do before you die.

See Galapagos Penguins in the Wild
See the Blue-Footed Booby Mating Dance in the Galápagos Islands
Location/Facts:
Situated in the Pacific Ocean, the Galapagos Islands are a volcanic archipelago that lie 620 miles from the South American mainland. A province of Ecuador, it consists of 13 main islands and 6 smaller isles. It is a remote destination that is a melting pot of unique wildlife, which inspired Charles Darwin’s landmark theory of evolution following his visit in 1835. Have been called a “living museum and showcase of wildlife” it is home to wildlife species that are found nowhere else on Earth; the giant tortoise, Galapagos sea lions, Flightless Cormorant, the Waved Albatross and, of course the boobies.
Getting There:
Galapagos is reached through the country of Ecuador by flying into either the capital city of Quito or the countries largest city of Guayaquil. If you don’t plan on spending any time on the mainland, fly into Guayaquil, since it is closer to the islands and most flights from Quito to the Galapagos stop there. If you plan on doing some exploring in Ecuador prior or after your trip, go to Quito. Its famous old town is an UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with colonial charm, bustling markets and architectural buildings. Whichever city you choose, will most likely require an overnight stay.
The Galapagos Islands has two airports, one on San Cristóbal and the other on Isla Baltra, just north of Santa Cruz. Which airport you choose will depend on how you have decided to explore the islands. The flight from Guayaquil to the islands is approximately an hour and forty-five minutes (about 40 minutes from Quito to Guayaquil). Domestic flights can be booked through TAME, Avianca or LAN.
Language(s):
Spanish is the official language in Ecuador and on the Galapagos Islands, though English is widely spoken on tours, plus in the restaurants and hotels.
Currency:
The US Dollar
Electricity:
Plug Type A/B, 110v. The voltage and socket is the same as the U.S., so there is not need for an adapter or converter.
When to Go:
Every month in the Galapagos has its highlights and the weather makes any time of the year a good time to visit, so when you go greatly depends on the type of experience you are looking to have. For example, in March on San Cristobal and Genovesa you can catch a glimpse of the frigatebirds inflated red throat pouches, in May your chances increase for witnessing the blue-footed booby mating dance on North Seymour and in August you can catch the newly born sea lion pups. There is always something incredible to see on the Galapagos. For a complete list of wildlife activity check out the monthly calendar at Ecuador Travel Site.
The peak tourism months are June, July and August, as well as mid-December through mid-January. You should book your trip well in advance during these times, as the number of visitors allowed on the islands is limited. Be aware that the prices are also often higher during this time. December through May is when the sea tends to be the calmest. In these months the weather is hotter and slightly rainy with temperatures typically in the 80s. On most days the sun will still make an appearance after the rainfall. June through November brings cooler temperatures (in the 70s) and colder water. Experienced divers prefer this time of year, as the currents bringing nutrients into the water draws more amazing marine life.
How to Visit/Planning:
One of the biggest decisions to make when planning your travel to Galapagos is how you will choose to explore the islands. You can either take a cruise on a live-aboard boat or stay onshore using a hotel as your base. If you select the latter, it is possible to book day trips to some of the popular islands from Santa Cruz or San Cristobal. Though this may be a more economical option, getting around independently can be challenging, as exploring most of the islands requires being accompanied by a licensed guide. Plus, you will have limitations to the islands you can reach due to the distance. The advantage to a multi-day live-aboard cruise is that they leverage the night hours by using them to travel between islands, so your days are not wasted. The small group yachts, under 20 passengers, are the best way to explore the islands and see more of the wildlife in a personalized environment. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of licensed vessels with a variety of stops and routes to choose from. Ecoventura is the sustainable travel company who took me through the islands, and is ideal for those wanting a small group experience with educated naturalists. If you opt for day trips from the main islands, Sharksky offers good options. The best solution may be to take a 4-day cruise then spend a couple days on your own on a populated island, like Puerto Ayora in Santa Cruz or Puerto Baquerizo Moreno in Cristóbal.
Getting Around:
Navigating between the islands will require a plane or boat. Though for getting around on the populated islands you can rent a bike for about $15 per day or catch a taxi for a couple of bucks to most destinations.
Where to Stay:
If you are staying overnight in Guayaquil, try Hotel Oro Verde (from $124), which offers shuttle service from the airport or for a more peaceful stay in a quiet residential area, Nazu House Bed & Breakfast (from $86). In Quito, splurge at Hotel Patio Andaluz (from $210) centrally located in the historic district or hideaway at Las Terrazas de Dana (from $109), a modern ecolodge in the cloud forest of Mindo. In the Galapagos, stay in the lap of luxury at Finch Bay Eco Hotel (from $325) on Santa Cruz Island or the family run Galapagos Suites (from $134). On San Cristóbal, try the simple Galapagos Eco Friendly (from $89) that has all you need.
Where to Eat:
While in Quito, get your ceviche fix at Zazu (www.zazuquito.com) or indulge in traditional Ecuadorian dishes and pasta at Fried Bananas Café (www.newfriedbananas.com), make sure to order the fried banana dessert made with vodka. In Guayaquil, try local foods with a trendy twist at La Pizarra (https://ift.tt/1Nj7Qfu) or opt for Noe (www.noesushibar.com), known as the place to go for great sushi. On the island of Santa Cruz have a casual dinner at Calle de los Kioscos, an open-air market with plenty of cheap local food choices. For outdoor dining, head over to La Garrapata (+593 5-252-6264) for the fresh tuna in a sesame and pepper sauce. For a local experience on San Cristóbal, get burgers at Cri’s (https://ift.tt/2VT17Vm) and eat on the tiny stools out front.
Bucket List Must-Dos:
Plan your trip around the month of May to get a better chance of witnessing the Blue Footed Booby mating dance, the courtship ritual of these popular birds.
Take the steep climb to the top of the volcanic cone of Bartolomé and get a peak at the most photographed natural structure in the Galapagos, Pinnacle Rock.
Do as the sailors did in the 19th century and send a post card at Post Office Bay on Floreana Island. Leave one and sift through the others to pick one close to home to hand deliver.
Take a closer look at the giant tortoises at the Darwin Research Station (https://ift.tt/Kyq8rp) in Puerto Ayora where scientists and volunteers are involved in conservation.
Snorkel through the network of lava tunnels known as Los Tuneles on isle Isabela. The unique formations above and below the water include a series of arcs and tunnels that are a sanctuary of marine life.
Essential Information:
It is a requirement to have a naturalist with you when exploring the protected islands; you cannot just venture off on your own.
Though you may be able to hop onto a last-minute cruise when you reach the islands, it’s best to book well in advance, at least 3-4 months during non-peak times and 6 months to a year during high tourist months.
When arriving to either of the two Galapagos airports, travelers must pay a $100 per person ($50 for children under 12) Galapagos National Park entrance fee at immigration.
A visa is not required to enter Ecuador, though make sure your passport does not expire within 6 months of arrival.
It is strictly prohibited to touch or otherwise disturb the nature or wildlife of the Galapagos. Do not feed the animals (not even a drop of water) or leave behind any sort of litter.
Packing Tips:
Exploring the Galapagos typically means being on a boat, so make sure that you load up on motion sickness medication. Some days can get pretty choppy and seasickness can even affect those not prone to it. Try the sea-band wristband or Dramamine’s less drowsy formula.
Be kind to the ecosystem by bringing biodegradable sunscreen, shampoo, conditioner and lotions. (Alba Botanica makes a highly rated sunscreen and Campsuds makes a multi-purpose cleaner that can be used as a shampoo, body wash or even dish cleaner.)
A small pair of binoculars can go a long way when trying to spot wildlife from the boat. (Bushnell Falcon makes some nice ones for under $30)
Limit plastic waste by bringing a reusable water bottle. (The Vapor Element Bottle is perfect for travel since it folds up into a tiny neat package when empty)
Bring the right pair of shoes. Light hiking shoes are necessary for some of the islands and water shoes are needed for the wet landings when the panga can’t bring you all the way to the shore or dock. A dual-purpose Keen style active shoe would work well. Also, bring a comfortable pair of deck shoes to wear while just hanging out on the boat.
Don’t forget an underwater camera to capture the incredible marine life. I use a GoPro, but if you want a cheaper option just get an underwater case for your phone.
Most tours will provide snorkeling gear (masks, tube, fins and wet suit), but consider at least bringing your own mask. A properly fitted one can enhance your snorkel experience and lessen the chances of missing marine-life because of having to fiddle with your gear.
You can leave the makeup and blow dryers at home since you will most likely be in and out of the water several times per day.
Bring a small daypack to take along on the hikes.
Pack a dry bag to store all your electronics. It can get tricky moving from the small panga to shore while carrying your camera equipment and you want to make sure it is protected.
If you are taking a cruise, there will be some down time and very limited Internet. Bring a book or download movies to your laptop prior to leaving home.
It gets hot in the Galapagos and a long-sleeved UPF shirt to protect you from the sun while hiking or snorkeling can save your shoulders from a brutal burn.

Amid the neon-lit diners and coffee shops of New York’s Upper East Side sits a townhouse that’s a world away from the fast-paced drama of Manhattan. In sight of Central Park, but not as far north as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, it is just one of many such houses on a street full of elite mansions and enviable residences. No sightseeing map would direct you to East 70th Street, and it’s routinely bypassed by cab drivers, commuters and pedestrians, all of whom have somewhere else more important to be.
But beyond the townhouse’s wrought iron doors, under a keystone archway, a world of tightly guarded secrets awaits. For this intriguing six-storey mansion, 109-years-old and a fusion of Jacobean Renaissance and Tudor architecture, is a social club for a clandestine group of travellers who have seen more of the world – and universe – than anyone would think possible.

The deepest oceans. The farthest rivers. The highest peaks. Even the moon and outer space itself. All of it has been mapped by the club’s globetrotting members. And on any given day, many can be found in the back room, taking tea while plotting their next extraordinary adventure. Talk is not of the weather, but of moon landings and blow dart encounters.
The people who’ve marched through these doors created pages of history
This is the little-known Explorer’s Club, the headquarters of one of the world’s most awe-inspiring field science institutions. Its illustrious list of current, historical and honourary members includes Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, who first summited Mt Everest; aviator Charles Lindbergh, who made the first solo transatlantic airplane flight in 1927; Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl who sailed his hand-built balsawood raft, the Kon-Tiki, from Peru to Polynesia; famed pilot Amelia Earhart who disappeared in the Pacific; Apollo astronauts, including Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong, the first men on the Moon; record-breaking deep-sea diver Sylvia Earle; British paleoanthropologist Mary Leakey, who discovered 15 new species of animal; Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos; Titanic film director and deep-sea explorer James Cameron; and primatologist Dame Jane Goodall, considered the world's foremost expert on chimpanzees. The list is mind-boggling. Small wonder the club’s in-joke involves an astronaut, aquanaut and speleologist walking into a bar.
“There are millions of stories associated with this place, and sometimes I need to catch myself from name-dropping,” said two-time club president Richard Wiese, who himself is an explorer with more than 200 episodes of the Emmy Award-winning TV travel series Born to Explore with Richard Wiese on his resume. “The people who’ve marched through these doors created pages of history. They’re immortalised figures.”
View image of The Explorer’s Club’s list of members includes Neil Armstrong, Edmund Hillary and Theodore Roosevelt (Credit: Credit: Mike MacEacheran)
Now the club’s 44th president, Wiese was drawn into this Indiana Jones world by his father, Richard Wiese Sr, who was the first man to solo the Pacific Ocean in a plane. He remembers standing on his front lawn in Connecticut looking at cumulus and contrail clouds wishing he could be just as adventurous. By age 12, he had travelled to Africa and climbed Mt Kilimanjaro.
“I recall the first time I came to the club in the mid-1980s,” Wiese told me, while we sat at a table once owned by former member and US president Theodore Roosevelt in the club’s boardroom. “It was to see a lecture about black bears in northern New Jersey, and straightaway I knew I had found my people.”
Like the other mountain-climbing, polar-exploring, zeitgeist-defining club presidents before him, Wiese maintains the society’s purpose is for knowledge enhancement alone, not self-fulfilment. Its 3,500 members – spread across 32 global chapters, including the New York headquarters – are bound by a bond to push the boundaries of science and education. And these days, membership is predominantly taken up by oceanographers, lepidopterologists, primatologists and conservationists. Not wannabe Shackletons.
A case in point: this past summer, a group of club palaeontologists were in Mongolia’s Gobi Desert hunting for fossilised dinosaur remains using drone scanners. “They found dozens, if not hundreds,” Wiese told me, almost as if he couldn’t quite believe it himself. “Exploration for us is now less a cult of personality and more a cult of data. And because of that we’re getting better at finding the truth.”
View image of The Explorer’s Club consists of 3,500 members spread across 32 global chapters, including the New York headquarters (Credit: Credit: Mike MacEacheran)
It was 1904 when The Explorer’s Club was founded by historian, journalist and explorer Henry Collins Walsh and like-minded Arctic explorers. At the time, the race to the North Pole had brought the group together with a broader purpose to explore by air, land, sea and space. This saw the first meetings held at its original headquarters in the Studio Building at 23 West 67th Street. But as the club grew in stature, so too did its need to expand to house trophies, books and priceless artefacts.
Enter American writer and broadcaster Lowell Thomas of ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ fame years later. An enthusiastic member in the 1960s, he was instrumental in the club acquiring its current headquarters, once a private family home owned by an heir to the Singer Sewing Machine.
“This place used to be about pushing dragons off the map,” said the club’s archivist and curator of research collections Lacey Flint, leading me on a fascinating tour of the townhouse. “We still push those dragons, but the club has become so much more. What really excites members is that we know more about the volcanoes on Jupiter than we do about the very bottom of our oceans.”
View image of Richard Wiese: “There are millions of stories associated with this place” (Credit: Credit: Mike MacEacheran)
History is alive in the building’s upper galleries like few other places in New York. It isn’t just the taxidermy polar bear guarding the staircase. Or the sledge used by Robert Peary and Matthew Henson on an expedition to the North Pole in 1909 (now placed above a door in the Clark Room). It’s in the indigenous totems found by Michael Rockefeller on a trip to collect primitive art from New Guinea (while several artefacts were airmailed to the US, Rockefeller never returned and rumours persist he was eaten by cannibals). It’s in the series of framed club flags, once folded into spacesuit pockets and carried on every Apollo mission into space. And it’s in the artefacts on the desk of the club’s archivist that still need to be catalogued.
It’s a place that boggles the senses
Moreover, it’s a place that boggles the senses. On the day of my visit, Flint’s desk was taken over by a prized 17th-Century Persian helmet and a pair of Spanish colonial spurs. She oversees some 1,000 objects in the club’s collection, as well as a library brimming with 14,000 volumes, photographs, slides and reports. One recent acquisition is a century-old Akeley Pancake Camera, dating to 1919 and first built for rugged expeditions.
The townhouse is an intriguing architectural marvel in itself. There are wooden beams taken from HMS Daedalus (an 1826 frigate warship). A ceiling bought from a 15th-Century Italian monastery, plus original stained-glass windows inlaid with Tudor roses from Windsor Castle in England. It’s so out-of-this-world, in fact, it feels as if it could have been designed by Jonathan Swift’s fantastical traveller, Lemuel Gulliver.
View image of The Explorer’s Club’s New York headquarters houses around 1,000 artefacts collected by its members (Credit: Credit: Mike MacEacheran)
One floor up, past the Hall of Fame and the Sir Edmund Hillary Map Room, is the extraordinarily detailed Gallery. A drop-in visitor can see trophies of cheetah and lion from Smithsonian expeditions; a yeti scalp and prayer wheels from Tibet; a first edition of Napoleon’s description of Egypt; an Alaskan mammoth tusk, moose heads and stuffed penguins; a pelt from a man-eating Nepali tigress; and the remarkable ivory of a four-tusked elephant, a rare genetic anomaly from Congo. The horde of artefacts is so exact – so remarkable – that, at first, it feels like a film set suspended in time.
They were rock stars of their age
“The risks these explorers took were crazy,” said Flint, pointing to an oil painting of Danish explorer Peter Freuchen that hung above the fireplace. Freuchen, she told me, wore a coat from a polar bear he killed, and once escaped an ice cave using frozen excrement as an improvised dagger. “These were people who would amputate their own foot. They were rock stars of their age and their stories are just as radical. Some unearthed burial grounds of ancient kings, while others travelled to the Arctic with a full tea service or crossed a desert with a camel carrying a full-size writing desk. Unbelievable, isn’t it?”
Members’ adventures are just as inspiring today. Archaeologist Joan Breton Connelly – aka ‘Indiana Joan’ – continues to dig for clues at a Cypriot temple built by Cleopatra that she discovered, while deep-sea explorer Jennifer Arnold’s passion is diving for megalodon teeth.
View image of While The Explorer’s Club has an illustrious history, president Richard Wiese says its members are focussed on the future (Credit: Credit: Mike MacEacheran)
To visit the club – possible for around $25 during the society’s weekly public lectures – is to experience an expense of spirit most people can only dream of. While the world of the explorer is changing, the club’s president believes it is a golden era for members – particularly in the fields of palaeontology, anthropology and space exploration.
There is still plenty of magic left in the world – and it’s our job to find it
With evolution comes opportunity and time for reflection, Wiese told me, and over the next few months, the club will undertake one of its most ambitious projects to date: to bring together the largest ever gathering of moon walkers and Apollo astronauts to celebrate 50 years since the Moon landing in July 1969.
“Our challenge is to stay relevant,” Wiese said, looking out the window. “In science, if an organism doesn’t evolve it’ll go extinct. Yes, we have an illustrious history, but our members are focussed on the future – on climate change and on animal and human preservation. So the more we can promote and popularise science to people that have curiosity about the world the better. There is still plenty of magic left in the world – and it’s our job to find it.”
