“Comedown” Lyric Analysis tidbit
Tumblr media
🔥Hot take 🔥
The “Camellia Street” Luke Hemmings references in his song “Comedown” on his solo album WFTTWTAF, is actually the one in Western Sydney where he and Ashton and the other 5sos boys grew up (also where their families still live). Camellia Street is located in Greystanes, NSW. It’s only about a 38min drive from his hometown Freemans Reach, Sydney, NSW. It’s Central to where all the boys lived.

Here’s a map of where Camellia Street in Sydney is and it’s location relative to the boys hometowns.
The white blank dot is Hornsby where Ash lived, about 30min drive.
A is where Camellia Street is.
B is Mount Druitt where Calum lived, about 20min drive.
C is Freemans Reach where Luke lived, about 38min drive.
D is Quakers Hill where Michael lived, about 24min drive.

There’s also a suburb of Sydney, NSW named Camellia.
None of it has anything to do with Sierra, as she’s always lived in the USA. Something happened on the street in NSW that was significant enough, along the course of his life, for him to refer to it to where a change of heart and silver linin’” happened. WFTTWTAF was about Luke reflecting on what happened during childhood then through the 10 years of 5sos. His own words. 🔥
That story about it being where she lived was to give her some clout and fuel the closeting/PR relationship because Sony LOVES LOVES LOOOOOVES using artists personal lives to promote projects, instead of letting the artist promote their artistic creativity on its own merit.
I mean, in the verse following that line, Luke is talking about darkness, then “these colors creepin’ in, they give me somethin’ I can feel”. This echos the sentiment of struggling with addiction, depression/mental health, and also closeting. He writes of going into a “dark room” and “through a doorway”. Colors filling ones life, opening eyes, and coming to a full comfort with oneself echos a transformation that lgbt people experience when they find a connection with oneself/another person that is acceptance and happiness that comes with freedom to be yourself. I’ve noticed the “Love Wins” in the “Starting Line” music video, rainbows and bright splashes of color in the “Motion” music video and the live version of “Place In Me” video. The experimenting with makeup and not conforming to the gender norms of masculinity. It’s so wonderful and beautiful to see!!
Sony owns Arista Records (the label WFTTWTAF was released on). Sony is known for pushing artists personal lives to promote projects. This can be seen with the way Sony vs Marvel promotes their films. How so many artists under Sony are pushed to talk about their relationships with the media when they are promoting their own projects.
