skip to loafer chapter 59 analysis // spoiler
the battle between who you are, who you want to be and what people think of you: who do you trust to form your identity?

when i read chapter 58, i had this whole idea in my head for the next chapter. i thought kanechika would get closer to kazakami and help him get a little more comfortable with himself. well, i wasn’t entirely wrong. what i forget to consider was how sensei always have a card on her sleeve, ready to surprise us at any time. and this time, the surprise came in form of a teacher.
but first, i want to start with the obvious: the conversation at the beginning of the chapter. after having so many internal battles, kazakami is left with nothing but shame of himself, his hobbies and his recent outburst. he’s feeling defeated and alone, with his internal voices giving more and more power to his parent’s. and suddenly, a boy with dreams as big as the world stop him on his tracks and break his walls.
for the first time on the chapter, kazakami receives his first confirmation: yes, it wasn’t right of his parents to do that to him. just having someone outside of his personal zone blasting this out loud made it clear to him, made it easier to see. that’s why there was no need to go grab his figures back — all he wanted was a confirmation of his pain, someone that would be brave enough to say “this is wrong and you have the right of being hurt”. there was all he needed; nothing solid, but words as concrete as the burden on his back.

i love how kanechika was left surprised because of it. for him, it was easier to just go and resolve the misunderstanding. that’s the contrast between them: one who moves thought actions and the other who moves through words. and that was the best opening for the next scene, with the ace card sensei pulled: hanazono.
i don’t think i’m wrong when i say that it wasn’t surprising to see how everyone was acting when they found out she was pregnant — the prejudice, the side eyes, the judgment. and kazakami wasn’t innocent in all that: he also had a previous image of the teacher on his head, having it a little shaken after hearing her words. he’s once again grabbed by the neck and forced to look outside of his box, once again having to face his own past judgments.
hanazono isn’t the type of person he thought she was. she’s bolder, more assure of herself and with strong convictions. she’s someone who manage to look at herself in the mirror and ask the hard question: who are you? who do you want to be?

contrasting with what kanechika had to say (as in, giving voice to a feeling he already had, but couldn’t put a name to it), hanazono challenge’s him to see everything from another perspective. “the person i thought i was isn’t the right one so…who do i want to be?”. he’s now left with more questions than he had before. so…is it right to give up on everything he loved just to seek the future his parents want? the “self” he seeks to find, is it the one who’s a proud diver fan or the one who has nothing but someone else’s dreams?
this is very, very confusing for an adolescent who had it all stripped from him. kazakami thought he had an idea of himself before, but it’s all proving to be wrong as the time passes. he wasn’t someone that get sad about figurines — but now he heard his feelings out loud. he wasn’t someone who would lose his time with football, girls and other frivolous things — but is he the one who his father want him to be?
sensei has a talent for portraying confusion and deep, weird emotions we all felt as teenagers (the seek for our identity, the chance we need to be who we are), so it wouldn’t be different now. what we’re seeing of kazakami is only the beginning of his journey of finding who he is and who he want to be. and now, to make things even better, we have a new mother who’s ready to show the world how strong and capable she is without all of them.

first of all, he's such a loser. i love him. he's just like me
we're so fucking back. takamatsu..... you've done it again, constantly raising the bar for us all and doing it flawlessly. i've said this before but a kazakami chapter after so many years??? this is crazy. i thought we'd never get to see more of him after the first cultural festival and i even thought that kazakami being a tokusatsu fan was info that would just stay in the extras, but of course takamatsu had other plans. love her for that. anyway! i really love where this is going. it kinda reminds me of the valentine's chapters, with the way kazakami blew up and yelled at kanechika (like mika and mukai). he reminds me a little bit of yuzu as well for obvious reasons. i'm glad we get to explore another overachiever type of character, and taking into account what we've learned about him this chapter, aren't takamine and kazakami a lot more similar than we initially thought?! (going a little insane thinking about this). also kazakami/kanechika's such an unexpected but fun duo. kanechika's free and unabashed personality contrasts pretty heavily with kazakami's calculated persona and i'm eating that up. we've already seen that not everyone is kanechika's greatest fan (at least at first) *cough shima cough* but we've also seen that his authenticity and sincerity are things that can inspire people. if anyone can break down kazakami's walls, that's him. he can make a tokusatsu friend along the way as well!

Kazakami must have finally felt understood when Kanechika told him that it wouldn't be the same if he decided to buy those same figures again. Unlike his parents, Kanechika understands how precious those figures were to him.
Kanechika is so adorable, he's ready to accompany and support him so that he can get his figures back :')
We really feel that Kazakami has understood something important thanks to him. So thanks to Kanechika for being so adorable and true to himself 🧡

Skip to Loafer Relationships (and my perspective)
The confirmed, implied, or hinted
Mitsumi and Shima: Obviously
Mika and Mukai: I actually find this ship kinda intriguing simply because they aren't the stereotypical personality types that get paired together. The deprecative, insecure girl x the guy who isn't afraid to speak his mind.
Yamada and Tomoe: Tomoe is so freaking cute. Although I find Yamada a bit annoying, I really hope that his relationship with her develops him into a better person (not that he's a bad person per-se, but I feel like he needs to really learn what it means to be in a relationship and to genuinely LOVE someone instead of pursuing them for their looks.
Nao and her boyfriend: I don't remember the BF's name but I think they have a very wholesome relationship. And I think Takamatsu does a great job writing a down-to-earth, not overtly dramatized relationship for a trans character. I may have said this before in a previous post, but I have found it incredibly rare to find a respectful portrayal of a trans character in Japanese media, so StL is a treat.
Makoto and Senpai: who is this "Senpai" you ask? *Shrugs* I don't know either! Could it be the senpai from her first date with that dude back in Chapter 26? Possibly? Or is there someone new? That's also a chance. Honestly, either way, I hope it's a good person!
Characters I'm interested in:
Yuzuki: Obviously, she's the odd one out of the group. Out of the main cast, she's the only one who is strictly and overtly single. She seems to reject every guy who proposes to her, but I'm not sure if this is out of distrust built in her middle school years, or simply she just isn't interested. I honestly can't tell if she likes boys and just doesn't trust them, if she likes girls, or if she's asexual/aromatic.
Kanechika: I like this guy. He really reminds me of a lot of theater type people I met during my university days. I'll say this upfront. The first impression I got from him is he's gay. His flamboyant personality and colorful dressage does little to persuade me otherwise, LOL.
I'm sure there's more examples, but I'm just going over the few that I explicitly remember. I love reading the manga, and I wish it updated more than once a month 😭 but sometimes the wait is worth it.

Tokusatsu references in Skip to Loafer Chapter 58
This is practically a spiritual successor to my toku x blue period post but this time I'm just going to point out all the things I think were referenced. This is also just a fun post in general so sit back and count up your sins references chapter 58

Okay first off. This may be a reach already but I believe the first panel is a reference to kamen rider kuuga, just because this is almost identical to what the main character/rider (yusuke godai) wore and just his general vibe.

The dive chant the characters keep saying in the chapter is the famous 'Henshin' that is a staple in the tokusatsu genre (especially kamen rider) Its literal definition in english is 'transform' which is used for when characters turn into their superhero personas.

This part I believe could be a reference to Kamen rider ZI-O. Although it doesn't have a watch because kamen riders have have their transformation devices on their waist, the overall theme of time and the watch is part of the belt so I'll count it. Furthermore, Kanechika references other heroes like Blade (<3) which is linked to the main character of ZI-O's ability of turning into past kamen riders. BUT I could be wrong so take it with a grain of salt

Right this scene. Other than oughhh, this was a reference to Armor Hero XT, a chinese tokusatsu aimed to be a Chinese counterpart to Kamen Rider. I'm not too good at my lefts and rights but I believe Kazakami is trying to point out that the pose should be the other way around which is displayed next to that panel. HOWEVER I want to dispute Kazakami's claim this as the suit shown above which I think he is thinking about is the MARS Armor. The one below should show the ARES form that is still the same armor hero but different pose which is what Kanechika is doing. I don't know if it's intentional but its quite neat that they know these details.

Skip and Loafer Episode 9 Part 2: (Drowsy and) Peppy

So, welcome to part two. I'm almost sorry that this post is long enough to be two posts thanks to image restrictions, but at the same time it's just such an incredibly good episode that I can't help it. So here we are, looking closer at the latter half of the episode as Mitsumi returns from her summer break.
⚠️Notice: This episode has been split into 2 posts because of length and image limits. This is the B Part post - (Drowsy and) Peppy. The A Part post, subtitled Drowsy (and Peppy), can be found on my blog if you haven't come across it yet.⚠️
I'll skip right along to the heart of it thanks to this latter half being a bit more fluffy and slower with its story. Hands (and body language) are an important form of communication between people, and Mitsumi, Shima, and (kinda) Kanechika are no exception to this rule. Right away, we get to see Kanechika's desire for Shima to act again, but in a more passive form. Not so much underhanded, but he's trying to let Shima come to him, and that's evident through his hand that's placed beneath Shima's, and allowing Shima to reach out for the script himself.

Similarly, Mitsumi approaches Shima in comparable fashion. The first time she offers the crackers to him, which he reaches out and accepts (unlike how he declines the script from Kanechika). However, on her second attempt, Mitsumi thrusts the crackers into Shima's hands. It's a really simple piece, but it shows the assertiveness of Mitsumi while also giving a physical example of how much she cares about her friends and wants to help them/make them feel better. Overall, a really nice piece and I like the dichotomy between the two scenes.

Moving forward, I love how the anime doesn't throw Makoto and Yuzuki under the bus in favor of Fumi. It goes the extra step to show that Mitsumi's personality has permeated their friendship as a trio, and that they're still great friends regardless of what Mitsumi has back home. Equally so, I really like how Mika isn't involved in the little reunion, but that she still offers Mitsumi (and Nao-chan) a gift. It's the little things, but they really count in selling these characters.

You could really say this second half is the episode of dualities and dichotomies and you wouldn't be that far off the mark.
Anyways, reunions have been had and so school starts once more, but Mitsumi's been gone for a while, and that social anxiety has flared up. She hasn't had much time to talk with Shima, and it's eating away at her. I really like it as a piece, as it continues to show just how unshakeable the cores of the characters can be. One moment in the second episode or whatever isn't enough to rid Mitsumi of any anxiety or overthinking.

She's feeling left behind, as she's hardly changed from where she started before summer break, and that's leaving her with a funny feeling weighing on her chest. That doesn't last for long though as her friends pick her up a little, which I think is really sweet. Mitsumi isn't a one man army that can bring cheer to the masses, she's an energetic high school girl that's moved to the city. She's vulnerable and weak at times too. (also, more of that first person perspective, and I just can't get enough of how well they use it to convey emotions).

So, she gets moving again and gets swept up into the cultural festival which in turn sweeps her off her feet with excitement and joy. Feelings that she just has to share with someone, which is where she spots Shima. And I really love this part. Mitsumi is not some ball of putty, but nor is she a rock. She's a character, a person of her own, and that manifests in interesting ways. Sure, she might still be anxious, and stumble a little socially here and there, but she can also change. She can run down that hallway without hesitation after Shima just like she did before, and get to spend priceless time with her friend. Also, they even re-used the same storyboard/direction for the sequence which I thought was really sweet in regards to making a callback to the original one.

And to finish it off, Shima and Mitsumi have an incredibly cute conversation. I really like how Shima just enjoys soaking up the passion and energy that Mitsumi exudes. It's a very simple dynamic, but I do enjoy it. The icing on the cake with it though is Mitsumi talking about wanting to share her excitement with Shima, and that prompting him to think of what Ririka said to him earlier. I think it's especially poignant given the difference in color palettes between the two scenes. The uplifting and warm one being those bright and comfy yellows and oranges and such, while the colder scene is full of those cooler colors instead.

And that about ends the B part and the episode on the whole. It's a really wonderful episode that packs in an incredible amount of emotion and dialogue and value into what it does and says. A good deal of it being explicit, but there's still a mountain that is only implied or hinted at, and I love it. It doesn't hold your hand through all of the information or state it outright, instead it shows you the world and how it goes around, allowing you to piece together what things should mean and be about. So, another lovely finish, and a lovely second half that goes into detail about standing beside one another and sharing those happy feelings.

9/11 Fahlanruk (Thai) 
GaGa Sundays, 10 eps, 45 min ea.
Fahlan (smart jock) meets Sherbet (edgy bad boy) sparks fly and they end up in bed together. Fahlan feels a lot more for Sherbet than is allowed, so he hides his feelings. Fahlan’s friends Ping and Tap, try to help their boy win his man, but are struggling with friends-to-lovers woes of their own. Looks to be a strong contender in the Thai BL pulp dumpster fire of joy arena. It’s using tropes we rarely see and it tonally seems like a combination of Nitiman + Y-Destiny’s players episode (2 of my 2021 favorites). I like sexually messy and identity confused college dramas but Love Mechanics might have tapped me out. 
Y-novel adaptation featuring a pining seme and high heat, from director Koo who has a long back catalogue of shows, if not a great track record with BL (Club Friday and Tonhon Chonlatee are his).

JaeWoo lives with childhood trauma. He travels to the past where he meets JiHoon, a law student who JaeWoo admires most in the world. Will he be able to change both their fates?

This is actually the inception story of the characters of AiNi in Tonhon Chonlatee which I didn’t realize. Now I loved those characters, but I disliked that series from a story standpoint and this is the same author so I’m now nervous.

🥝 What’s your favorite trope/AO3 tag to write?
Probably something like “getting back together” or “missed connections”; I love some pining, but I think it’s more interesting when the characters have real history together, whether they used to date or whether they had an opportunity to (or had a serious rivalry… hi ushioi…) but didn’t. I think it gives the pining an extra delicious depth of flavor.
I didn’t realize I liked this so much until I wrote Tapestry, where kenhina take like 50k words being friends-to-lovers-to-friends-to-lovers and I found it to be 🤌 to write & read back.
🍉 Do you prefer to write short fics or long fics? Multichaptered works or single ones? Why?
Oooh, tough one… I love writing a long (or long-ish) fic, partly because I love making myself some crunchy food to eat later. But sometimes this comes back to bite me when I get too overambitious and feel intimidated trying to finish things… I think the best balance is when I come up with a “manageably sized idea” and then let myself get carried away with it and it ends up as like a 15k fic.
🍊 Who’s a character you don’t write for that often, but keep meaning to write for more? (They’re so interesting! But maybe you have trouble pinning them down, or keep getting distracted by another blorbo…)
@saltedpin asked me this one too so I’ll go on and on a little bit.
In haikyuu I’ve covered a good number of my faves (though I have more I want to write for almost all of them), but there’s a few characters I haven’t written at all that I love. Asahi, Kita, some of the Shiratorizawa boys… I’ve also barely written Iwaizumi, Bokuto, Tsukishima, Yamaguchi—even though they do appear in fics, so I’d like to give them a little more screentime. Would also love to write the older sisters sometime! Miwa&Alisa&Saeko&Yachi photoshoot collab maybe. Honestly I would love to write something for any haikyuu character, haha.
And for characters from other fandoms! I’d love to write a Natsuhi-centric umineko fic. And for fandoms I’ve written nothing for I’ll make mysef pick one character from each… I would love to write Yotasuke from Blue Period, Asirpa from Golden Kamuy, Blackberry from Chicory: A Colorful Tale, Zagreus from Hades, Anne from Amphibia, Shima from Skip and Loafer (or maybe Kanechika?!), Dorotea from Angel Mage… TOTK Zelda maybe?! I’m sure there’s others I’m forgetting…

Ataru Sato “+10” at Kosaku Kanechika Media: Painting - Party (2018-06-09 - 2018-07-21)
Sato started being conscious about what art was for the first time after he entered art school, and was faced with a sense of confusion he had never experienced before with regard to making paintings. That led him to being critical about what he was creating, considering if it could be called art at all, and if “something new” could ever be possible in this world. His series of assorted scribbles on the backsides of exam papers that might be considered the starting point of much of Sato’s work, exhibited in 2004, did not contain any artistic knowledge or ambitions. But by looking back at the work, Sato says he has come to think that he cannot pursue “art for art’s sake” or “newness” as the purposes of his creation. He simply wants to create. In other words, Sato continues to practice out of his enthusiasm for painting, not in pursuit of meaning or reason. This is why his work has such strong energy. With pure interests in and respect for painting, and without oppressing his impulses but rather by channeling those impulses into the work, Sato’s curiosity surely inspires viewers. Sato states as follows: “Inspired by meeting people and experiences, I paint from in the midst of my feelings and thoughts. In other words, for me living is the very premise of art, created by and for oneself and by and for living people, creating and receiving. That is how I understand art now. I am still puzzled sometimes, but I continue my practice and my thought process regardless. I do not want thinking about art and newness to be the purpose of my practice, or to become obstacles. I doubt I will ever have clear answers to those questions.” Sato continues his practice as he simply likes to paint. Since his last solo exhibition “Courtship”, the new works featured in this exhibition have developed toward even richer and more diverse expressions.

Since his last solo exhibition “Courtship”, the new works featured in this exhibition have developed toward even richer and more diverse expressions.

how shima's envy of kanechika got him back into acting: a small debate
skip to loafer // general spoilers
one word that i would use to describe kanechika is “greedy” — and don’t get me wrong, i meant this with the best intentions in the world. since day one, he presented himself as someone who’s always aiming for something ahead of him, always craving for his next big achievement, always thinking about how to show who he really is, be it by being on the stage or behind it, as a screenwriter.

kanechika is character who’s shown a strong perseverance mixed with a tinge of self doubt here and there. his presence and self confidence can be seen by others as arrogance, or an invasive character, thanks to his never ending pressure on shima for him to join the club. as for me, i just see in him someone who’s not afraid of finding his place on earth by doing what he loves the most, by trying to find people who will help him in some ways or others. and, well, on the other side of the spectrum, we have another boy: shima.
kanechika embodies everything that shima is running away from. he’s energetic, true to himself and proud of his story, while shima is desperately trying to rewrite his own past, a new character for him to play that’s different from who he is or what he represents. by confronting someone who’s so sure of himself, his old feelings start to bubble up, which scares shima. and not only does he see in his senpai his dreamy old self who truly believed everything would be alright, but also someone who was able to keep fighting no matter how many times he fell — something his coward (on his own eyes) was never able to do.
it strikes a nerve. it makes him envy. he wants to be him, wants to have his strength, wants to fight again, something that he didn’t even believe it was possible. he wants to be onstage knowing he belongs there, not feeling like an imposter stealing someone else's place. kanechika is everything shima isn’t, and that makes him feel even inferior.

but that doesn’t make him hate him or even feel any animosity towards kanechika: he sees him as someone to look up to. his insistence on giving shima a second chance at acting doesn't come as a negative — in the end, it works: shima finds in himself strength to find his own passion on acting, a new way to overcome his older fears, his traumatic past.
kanechika is, for shima, a fresh of breath air, a second chance he didn’t want to accept. the envy that shima felt brought him closer to kanechika, which in consequence brought him closer to acting again; but now, there isn’t anyone forcing him to do anything, he’s there for himself and for the people who wants to see him happy.
kanechika persistence not only gave shima a second change, but will make him go further and further, will make him create more and more. can’t wait to see his creations on the big screen, maybe with shima as his main actor.
