Aaliyah promotes new single "If Your Girl Only Knew".

Rare snippet interview with Aaliyah from @convowithadj in promotion of her newly released "One In A Million" album and new music video "If Your Girl Only Knew".

The DJ (Eric Lee) was interviewing a few other people and they got on the subject of Aaliyah and he shared this rare high quality snippet.

Before Lee shared the throwback snippet, the person being interviewed mentions how there was a bet on who Aaliyah would talk to (out of him and his boy during the Red Album signing event) and mentions how Aaliyah kissed him on the cheek and how his boy felt the bet was rigged because Aaliyah already knew the guy.

Just listening to them talk about Aaliyah in such a tasteless way was cringy to me and adds fuel to already circulated disparaging comments about her.

The clip (above) ends with all parties on the conference interview/zoom acknowledging how Aaliyah's body language changed when he brought up RKelly's name. In comments online addressing this, the Eric Lee confirmed that it was Aaliyah's idea/suggestion to ask her about RK because "she wanted to address the rumors" on her own terms and set the record straight that she is not married.

#ONTHISDAY  “Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number” single is recorded in 1993 and released December 6, 1994.

The controversial song is about a young underage girl being interested in an older man. She notices him checking her out and gives him the green light to pursue their inner burning desires for each other; assuring him that their age difference shouldn't matter (being down for whatever). The song was written and produced by an older male (RKelly).

The music video was directed by Millicent Shelton ( @shelton9mil ) and filmed in Detroit, Michigan in late 1994 and has cameo appearance from her brother Rashad Haughton as well as appearances by rappers Proof and Bizarre from D12.

DID YOU KNOW: In May 1997, music publisher Windswept Pacific filed a lawsuit against Aaliyah with the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles citing that she illegally copied Bobby Caldwell's 1978 song "What You Won't Do for Love" and that "Age Ain't Nothing but a Number" bears a striking resemblance to Caldwell's song. There are little to no details about the settlement of that case.

Yes, you read that correctly. Not only was Aaliyah dealing with the backlash of the song lyrics, the marriage certificate scandal, and overcoming being blackballed in the industry, but she was also dealing with being sued a month before her high school graduation. That's a lot she had to deal with, but she pushed through!

👸🏾💜🙏 The first Aaliyah song that I heard from Aaliyah was One In A Million back in 1996! Instantly I was hooked. I went out and bought OIAM album & the singles. My 14 year old self related so much to that album that her music 🎵 would become a staple in the soundtrack to my life from then on. I remember where I bought each album. AANBAN at Blockbuster Music, OIAM at Sam Goody , RMD Sndtrk at Tower Records , Aaliyah & I Care 4 You at Best Buy. Fast forward to 2001 . I was so excited for the new album & I watched every special on tv. Then on this day 18 years ago on a message board I read that Babygirl was gone. I didn’t want to believe it. I went to MTV’s website hoping it wasn’t true, but it was. I was 19 years old at the time & I was crushed. Her untimely passing was the first one that I felt so deeply as if I had known her. Having her here , following her career since 1996 to experiencing her passing in real time is something that never leaves you. All the OG fans out there know what I am talking about. That is why I go so hard for her legacy now. It is why I have respect and compassion for what the family wants. You got to remember her parents lost a daughter. Her brother lost his sister. I can’t imagine the pain they have been through, but I always remember that they don’t see her as a celebrity, but as their blood. I think some people forget that & proceed to ask for things as if Aaliyah was a product that they are entitled to. I know as fans we want nothing but the best for Aaliyah’s legacy. Just frame your request with empathy & love not aggressively trolling with entitlement. My love for Aaliyah’s legacy will go on and on & I know us special ones will make sure that it does along with the family’s wishes.
