Scavenging Survival Items from Abandoned Vehicles:
No post-apocalyptic movie is complete without the stripped hulks of a few cars and trucks lying around. But modern everyday life is no different. Useful things can come from any abandoned vehicle such as tools, wiring, tires, battery, fuels, mirrors, and the body itself (for shelter and projects). In a serious emergency, your car, or an abandoned one, may become the victim and life saver. Just for safety's sake, make very sure a vehicle is truly abandoned before you get your pliers out and start ripping bits off. Once you're certain nobody's coming back for it, though, start scavenging. Bicycles and motorcycles; any vehicles, are also up for grabs. Dining Under the Sun and Stars:
When we do not have a stove to heat with wood or turn on with the flip of a switch, we have to find a way to cook. Additionally, using natural cooking solutions saves money and reduces dependence on "the grid". Our ancestors found a way to cook . . . even in winter. These Videos, Podcasts and articles explain how to cook good healthy food for a fraction of the cost of conventional cooking methods. DUTCH OVEN COOKING: There is something nostalgic about Dutch oven cooking over an open flame. The smell, the feel and the taste of this experience cannot be replicated by any other method of cooking. The Dutch oven brings out that warm feeling of being “home” regardless of where I may be in the world. PRIMITIVE COOKING: Learning to cook with a campfire, without man-made utensils, can be one of the most relaxing and rewarding experiences. Whether you're camping or in an actual emergency situation, common primitive cooking methods are skills worth knowing. The first skills necessary, however, are knowing how to start and build a fire. Then choose the primitive cooking method appropriate for the situation, available resources and weather.
Ash Cooking: Gather the food and large, live, non-poisonous plant leaves (preferably edible with stems or vines still attached). Slowly let the fire die while flattening the hot coals (but not burning with flames). Wrap the food in the leaves, using the stem/vine to hold it together. Place the food onto the coals. Use a stick to move some hot coals over top of the food so it can cook on both sides.
Broiling: Unless a pan is available, make something that can hold the food over the fire without it falling in. Strong, live, non-poisonous branches fashioned into a basket-weave pattern may do. Then lay the food on the boiler to cook. Flip the food as needed to cook thoroughly.
Hot Stone Cooking: Use a flat surface rock no less that one inch thick. Make sure the rock is clean but dry. Heat the rock on coals or over the fire until hot to touch. Place the food on the rock to cook.
Plank Cooking: Best woods for making planks are poplar, cedar, and oak; not conifers (pines). Cut into planks or rounds large enough for your food and cook similar to Hot Stone Cooking.
Steam Pit Cooking: Wrap food in large leaves, as when ash cooking. Dig a pit in the ground a foot to two feet deep. Line the bottom of it with hot coals. Place the food on top of the coals and then cover it with the earth you dug up. Allow it to sit for at least a couple of hours (even small food will take a while to cook this way). Then dig it up, and dig in!
Spit Cooking: Like a whole chicken spinning slowly on a rotisserie, that's spit cooking. Bury two "Y"-shaped (the top of a K is a better shape for pounding into the ground) branches, one on each side near the fire. Another straight, non-poisonous, hard-wood branch will pass through the food and hang on the two "Y"-shaped branches. Secure the food with non-poisonous vines or twine so it doesn't fall off as it cooks and turns. Turn the food occasionally to cook completely.
Clay Cooking: Wrap food in large leaves, as when ash cooking. Dig far enough into the ground and you'll, usually, find clay. Make sure that the area you dig wasn't once the place of toxic chemicals. Pack the clay around the food, in an even layer, to promote even cooking. Lay the clay-covered package over hot coals and allow it to cook. The time of cooking will depend on not only the size of the food being cooked, but also the thickness of the clay.
Shovel Skillet: Most backpackers and bug-out-bags will carry a small, foldable shovel to dig a latrine, fire pit or cover fire coals to put out a fire. A Not-So-Primitive cooking method is using a shovel as a skillet when no pots, pans or griddle are available. The metal shovel is excellent for cooking meats, veggies and breads. The [usual] long handle, makes it convenient to maneuver the food in and around the fire for different temperatures.
Makeshift Cooking Tools help with the cooking process. A Rake or Pitchfork can be used as skewers for roasting meats. A metal fork can be repurposed into a pan handle by poking holes in a metallic can in line with the fork tines, inserting the tines into the holes then bending the tines in an alternating pattern. This provides a safe, sturdy handle to move the can of food in and around the fire.

Beekeeping: The Sweetest Hobby of All in Maintaining a Renewable Food Source:
The hobby of beekeeping, also called apiculture, got started on a wide scale in the United States during World War II when sugar was tightly rationed. For many, during this time, what started out as a hobby burgeoned into a cottage industry. It was a very practical pursuit too because the whole family could pitch in, even the smaller children. Today, beekeeping has become one of the fastest growing hobbies in the United States. Further, some professional beekeepers started out as a small-time hobbyist but then grew into a full-time business because, not only can the honey be sold, but the wax as well and the bees as they multiply -- and bees are very good at multiplying! These are also good for Bartering. And bees can be raised in urban settings (on rooftops) as well as the country. How to Survive an Active Shooting Encounter:
High anxiety is today's normal and public shootings are no longer unusual. We must constantly practice Situational Awareness and Pre-Attack Indicators (pay attention to what, and who, is going on around you). Learn to react properly (don't panic) to an Active Shooting Encounter. If this happens to you, Run or Hide or Fight. Read on for details and watch the video from DHS. This training video, from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), demonstrates possible actions to take if confronted with an active shooter scenario. The instructive video reviews the choices of evacuating, hiding, or, as an option of last resort, challenging the shooter. The video also describes how to assist authorities once law enforcement enters the scene. VIDEO SYNOPSIS: How to Respond When an Active Shooter is in Your Vicinity: Quickly determine the most reasonable way to protect your own life: 1. Run (Evacuate). If there is an accessible escape path, attempt to evacuate the premises. Be sure to:
Devise an escape route and plan NOW. Wherever you go, be aware of Marked Exits
If possible, help others escape but evacuate regardless of whether others agree to follow
Leave your belongings behind
Discourage individuals from entering an area where the active shooter may be located
Do not attempt to move wounded people
Follow the instructions of police officers
Keep your hands visible and empty so police don't mistake you for the perpetrator
Call 911 when it is safe to do so
2. Hide. If evacuation is not possible, find a safe place to hide where the active shooter is less likely to find you. Your hiding place should:
Be out of the active shooter’s view
Provide protection if shots are fired in your direction (i.e., a room with a closed and locked door)
Not trap you or restrict your options for movement. To hinder an active shooter from entering your hiding place: lock or blockade the door with heavy furniture.
If the active shooter is nearby:
Lock or barricade the door
Silence your cell phone and/or pager. Turn off any source of noise (i.e., radios, televisions).
Hide behind large items (i.e., cabinets, desks)
Remain quiet
If evacuation and hiding out are not possible:
Remain calm
Dial 911, if possible, to alert police to the active shooter’s location
If you cannot speak, leave the line open and allow the dispatcher to listen and trace the call
3. Fight (Take action against the active shooter). As a last resort, and only when your life is in imminent danger, attempt to disrupt and/or incapacitate the active shooter by:
Acting as aggressively as possible against him/her (keep in mind that this person has nothing to lose so fight as if your life depends on it)
Yelling, throwing items, and improvising weapons
Committing to your actions

Learn Self-Sufficiency Skills Blacksmithing and Welding:
Blacksmithing and welding are just two of many different types of metalworking that people do today. They're quite different professions, but have very much in common. As a matter of fact ancient blacksmiths were pioneers of modern welding. In the old days, the blacksmith was like our "engineer" of his time. He needed to make precise tools for his community from the farmer to the hunter and trapper to the doctor and others. Some of the basic tools of the trade are: Forge, Coal, Anvil, several kinds/sizes of Tongs, several kinds/sizes of Hammers and Protective Clothing. The ability to manipulate metals has always been the mainstay to survivability. Learning this skill will help yourself to make tools you need as well as becoming a bartering skill for off-grid trading. Knowing how to forge weld is an essential technique and an invaluable skill for a blacksmith. It came from the necessity to integrate little pieces of metal to form a larger piece of metal. In an emergency off road situation or when there is no AC power, knowing how to weld with batteries can be a very useful skill using 12v batteries as Spot (or Arc) Welder with Jumper Cables and Carbon Rods [Video]    [Article & Video] Reference Links: Learn to Weld with a 12v Battery, Jumper Cables and Carbon Rod Learn Blacksmithing

Edible Landscaping - What Is It, How to Design It and What Plants to Choose:
Edible landscaping refers to mixing food plants in with your ornamental ones, to create a setting that is not only visually appealing, but productive as well. This post will provide suggestions for How to Design It and What Plants to Choose. Edible landscapes are nothing new, with the Ancient Egyptians being one of the first to create gardens featuring flowers, grape vines, and fruit trees, mixed with seating areas where one could enjoy the scenery. In the 10th century, the rose gardens that were sprinkled with fragrant herbs became a signature creation of Benedictine monks. Examples include:
Using different types of loose-leaf lettuce as border plants
Creating a hedge from blueberries or currants, rather than unproductive shrubs
Replacing non-edible trees with fruit trees
Using tomato plants or grape vines, instead of conventional climbing vines to cascade over a trellis
Having pots and baskets of colorful, fragrant herbs, rather than non-edible flowers
Incorporating striking vegetables, such as Swiss chard and pak choi, into flower beds
Using strawberries, thyme and mint as ground cover

Make a Solar Still for Water Collection:
A solar still will provide 100% pure water, and will not require purification or boiling prior to drinking. This technique will work just about anywhere, provided that there is enough sunlight to assist the process. Here are simple instructions how to build a solar still to extract pure drinking water from the earth. - Find, or dig, a hole in the ground - Place a water collection container at the bottom, and in the center, of the hole - Add live vegetation, in the hole, to improve moisture content - Loosely (not drum tight) cover the hole with a tarp or plastic across the entire diameter of the hole - Secure the covering around the top perimeter of the hole - Place a rock in the center of the covering so that the covering sags over the opening of the container Ground moisture will condense on the inside of the plastic or tarp, and drip down toward the center and into the container This process can also be done using 2 containers instead of digging a hole by placing a small [collection] container inside a larger [bad water] container. Tips for Sheltering in Place:
Sheltering in place is [hopefully] a short-term solution to address a biological, chemical, nuclear, radiological or civil unrest threat. The objective is to protect those of us inside, from the bad stuff outside. Pre-planning should stock the "shelter" with water, food and other supplies for, at least, a 2-week stay without venturing outside. Additional tips, here, will help take the necessary actions to effectively shelter in place. Learn how to evaluate When Bugging Out Is not an Option. The Ultimate Level of Preparation has Little to do with Stuff or Detailed Plans but, rather, Heart and Mind and Soul:
A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences. Proverbs 22:3 NLT Think About It: For many, the concepts of God, Jesus, heaven, hell, Satan and Armageddon may be difficult to grasp, unimportant or irrelevant and, therefore, not taken seriously. But, if we can imagine that they are "possible", wouldn't it be prudent to prepare on the side of caution to end up in the best situation (heaven instead of hell) if they are real and do happen? With no disrespect intended toward God and Jesus, it's a bit like insurance; we buy insurance just in case it DOES happen with the hope that it DOES NOT happen. Preparing our minds, hearts and souls for God and heaven is our insurance in case Satan and hell are real and Armageddon does happen. The Ultimate Preparation - Read, Believe, Obey, Fast, Plan, Stand Firm, Rejoice
READ [The Bible]
Daily Bible Verses for the Year
BELIEVE
. . . that Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, died on the cross, was buried and rose from the grave as the replacement for the sacrifice for sin for all people, including you. 16 "For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish (in the fires of hell) but have eternal life (in God's Kingdom). John 3:16 (New International Version) 1 Peter 3:18 (The Message) Romans 10:9 (New Living Translation)
OBEY . . .
. . . God's commandments. Are you sure you have eternal life? How do you know if you are saved? What is salvation, really? 20 So then, you will know them by their fruits. 21 Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. Matthew 7:20-21 (New American Standard) 1 John 3:21-22 (New International Version) 1 John 5:3 (The Message) 1 John 2:3 (New Living Translation) John 14:15 (New Living Translation) Matthew 19:16-17 (New Living Translation) Luke 10:25-28 (New King James Version) Ephesians 2:10 (New International Version) Hebrews 12:14 (New Living Translation)
FAST
Do you fast as part of your training regiment? If you are healthy enough, consider doing this to help prepare the soul, mind and body for the days ahead. While fasting (ingesting water or tea only) can be beneficial for non-spiritual reasons, it is, usually, a means by which we seek spiritual benefits such as drawing closer to our Maker through improved spiritual insight and creative abilities. However, our motive(s) for fasting must be questionned; to use "good" things to our own [selfish] end is a sure sign of self-centeredness and a false religion. The Benefits of Fasting for Survival Check with your doctor and read up on the "how-to's" of fasting and seek God for the times of fasting in your life. Suggested reading: God's Chosen Fast by Athur Wallis [Abridged Version PDF file].
PLAN and PREPARE
. . . for the appearance of the Anti-Christ and return of Jesus. 1 "God's kingdom is like ten young virgins who took oil lamps and went out to greet the bridegroom. 2 Five were silly and five were smart. 3 The silly virgins took lamps, but no extra oil. 4 The smart virgins took jars of oil to feed their lamps. 5 The bridegroom didn't show up when they expected him, and they all fell asleep. 6 "In the middle of the night someone yelled out, 'He's here! The bridegroom's here! Go out and greet him!' 7 "The ten virgins got up and got their lamps ready. 8 The silly virgins said to the smart ones, 'Our lamps are going out; lend us some of your oil.' 9 "They answered, 'There might not be enough to go around; go buy your own.' 10 "They did, but while they were out buying oil, the bridegroom arrived. When everyone who was there to greet him had gone into the wedding feast, the door was locked. 11 "Much later, the other virgins, the silly ones, showed up and knocked on the door, saying, 'Master, we're here. Let us in.' 12 "He answered, 'Do I know you? I don't think I know you.' 13 "So stay alert. You have no idea when He might arrive.    [Matthew 25:1-13] [Luke 21:36] [Proverbs 22:3]    [Proverbs 27:12] [Luke 12:40]    [Matthew 24:44] [1 Thessalonians 5:1-6] [Genesis 41:47-54] [Luke 21:9-19] During the reign of the anti-christ (satan; the beast, an evil organized group of people), true Christians will not accept the "mark of the beast" which will prevent them from getting food, water and other provisions (Revelation 13:17). The "mark of the beast" may not only be an actual mark, physical characteristic, ID Card, vaccine for a blood/dna marker, or implant but an evil mindset or belief system (on their forehead) or evil deeds/actions (on their right hands); indicators that they follow the beast and believe in the beast and what the beast says. [Video 1] [Video 2] True Christians will need to stock up on food, water (etc.) and things they can barter with such as precious metals, goods and services.
STAND FIRM
Living in the Last Days . . . against Satan, the anti-christ, who will come as the ultimate con artist, deceiving those who are not true Christians into believing that he is Jesus by performing "miracles" (tricks, magic) and bringing a false peace to the world. True Christians (those who do not have the "mark of the beast") will experience persecution and death during this time because they will not be tricked into believing that this deceiver is Jesus. REJOICE
. . . at Jesus' return to Earth to cast satan and his followers into the lake of fire (hell) and bring true and lasting peace to the world. Revelation 19 [Reference Link] Related Resources: The Hand of God Let's Talk About Death and Dying

Learn to Make or Purchase a Full-Face Mask for Environmental Hazards or Defense:
Purchasing a Professional Gas Mask or making my own (from a 2 or 3-liter plastic soda bottle or full underwater snorkel mask) is a tool worth having to filter the air in an emergency situation or protect against projectiles. Recently, while I was perusing the web, I ran across an advertisement for a Full Face Snorkel Mask used for underwater swimming/diving/snorkeling. Now, at the risk of having many think that I have gone "over the top", my prepper instincts kicked in when I first saw this thing. As a matter of fact, I did not even think of the water when I saw it; it seemed like the perfect make-shift gas or pandemic filter mask. It looked like a gas mask except that it had this thing (the snorkel) sticking out of the top. Just like a conventional underwater snorkel, the mask's snorkel controls the intake and exhale of air, but the mask covers the entire face, protecting the eyes, nose and mouth and allowing unrestricted breathing from the nose and/or mouth. A rubber gasket, around the edge of the mask, seals the face inside, keeping water out, providing a water-free-eyes view of the diving experience. Obviously, when I blocked the snorkel hole, I could not breathe; duh . . . just checking. In a hypothetical gas/pandemic mask scenario, the snorkel, or only the hole at the top of the mask where the snorkel attaches (remove to reduce attracting attention), could be covered with a surgical mask [material], or 2 surgical masks with activated carbon (charcoal) sandwiched between them, to provide a limited use full-face, air-filtering mask. When I tried this, airflow was slightly restricted but I was able to breathe. Someone with claustrophobia anxiety disorder could have more serious breathing problems. Sorry, I did not take it out for a test drive to see if it works as a gas mask. I do not have any tear gas and my fires, usually, produce little smoke, but I did confirm that it does what it is intended to do under water; a very cool experience. I found these, used with very minor wear, on eBay for less than $25 each (free shipping, of course). They can also be imported from Asia, new, for around $35 each. New, retail price is $45 and up depending on the retailer. There are at least two sizes so be mindful of that if you decide to purchase. Since they were marked as "used", I washed them with antibacterial soap and wipes, inside and out, before use but I would have done that even if they were new. So, if a full-fledged gas mask is not in your budget, and you do not want to build one from a 2-liter soda bottle, consider a Full Face Snorkel Mask. In a true pandemic situation, all used protection equipment should be destroyed so this might not be a cost-effective use of the product but in a true emergency, safety is paramount to cost. Here are some YouTube videos on DIY masks from bottles. Emergency planning is mostly about education and developing a think-outside-the-box view of what most would consider obvious. So, while you may not go rushing out to buy one of these for the purpose mentioned here, you now have a concept that an "obvious" snorkel mask might be a tool to consider for another purpose in an emergency situation. As with all tools and equipment, test before it is actually necessary to use them. FLUSHGOV MISSION: Encourage ALL voters to force political Term Limits either by enacting Term Limit Laws or voting against incumbent politicians seeking re-election to the same office by:
1 - Becoming an Informed, Educated, Legal Voter.
2 - Always Voting with the understanding that, as a U.S. citizen, voting is sharing in the ruling of your country and a serious responsibility and duty to yourself, your family, friends, neighbors, and your country.
3 - Cleaning House. Always vote against incumbents (those who are seeking re-election to the same office). Push for Term Limits for all political offices.
4 - Keeping politicians under constant scrutiny and communicate your interests and positions to your legislators. Never assume they know what's best for you; they don't.
5 - Encouraging your family and friends to do the same.

Use an Analog Clock as a Compass:
Using a Watch to Find North: The watch method for navigation is useful for finding the cardinal directions of: north, south, east and west. While not being 100 percent accurate, it is handy for crude navigation when a compass is not available and can head you in the correct general direction in camping, bushcraft, backpacking and survival situations. It is also useful in combination with other natural navigation methods found in this link and other resources.
If Located in the Northern Hemisphere: Align a twig (pointing up) at the edge of your watch so that it casts a shadow onto the face of the watch from the Sun. Rotate the watch until the twig's shadow (the Sun) is cast directly onto the hour hand. The halfway point between the hour hand and the 12-oclock mark is your North-South line. Note that during Daylight Saving Time (or Summer Time), your watch is most likely one hour "off" from the "real" time. If this is the case, substitute 1 o'clock for 12 o'clock before finding your North-South line. The halfway imaginary line will point to South If only a digital clock is available, draw an analog/dial clock (with the correct time) on paper or in the dirt.
If Located in the Southern Hemisphere: Align a twig (pointing up) at the edge of your watch so that it casts a shadow onto the face of the watch from the Sun. Rotate the watch until the twig's shadow (the Sun) is cast directly onto the 12-oclock mark. The halfway point between 12-oclock and the hour hand is your North-South line. Note that during Daylight Saving Time (or Summer Time), your watch is most likely one hour "off" from the "real" time.
