my sleep schedule watching me consider waking up at 7am for opening... this is queued tho 😭 hihi i’m melo (21+, s/h), writer of hot girl trash raccoon lee yuram & her functional symbie known as yubi! she’s currently a low ranking journalist at the herald & has lived all her life in eden while dreaming of taking over the world ( yubi tells her to pass her exams first, loser 😔 ) all her info is scattered around the blog ( stats, bio, power ) & i have no plots so here’s an attempt at putting everything together under the cut 😬 hit the ♡ or drop an im if you’d wanna plot, i also have discord if that’s easier!! 💖
TLDR
eden born & raised! her parents were both metas who decided quickly that they wanted to settle down, get registered, & live a good safe life. her dad talks to animals & her mum has some healing powers
think about the most law abiding, nice, polite, incredibly normal two people who could ever exist. that’s yuram’s parents. that’s also how you get an absolutely unhinged child
yuram’s a terror before she gets yubi, the sort to get into playground brawls & play dumb pranks. that annoying kid who likes to ask but why tho when she’s told no. extremely bored of being a goody two shoes like her parents so she turns around & is no shoes gremlin
anyway she’s born with a funky looking birthmark that turns into symbiotic ink when some kid breaks their pen & splatters her with ink, around age ten-ish. enter: yubi!
( basically venom but ) reverse symbiote trope! yuram wants WORLD DOMINATION & yubi just wants to pass their tests & maybe get a steady income
so ( v sadly ) yubi doesn’t help with any of the taking over the world stuff. they do help with exams & chores though 🙏🏻
yuram ends up in university thanks to her symbie, as a journalism major bc she’s a nosy little shit & thinks she knows what the news should be reporting
fresh grad, just got herself hired by the herald but doesn’t get to cover the mayor chae story :( but she might be poking around on the downlow......
other symbie facts! yubi’s personality fluctuates depending on what kind of ink yuram uses to build them up, but they’ve got a solid lawful good base. they aren’t always awake; if there’s too little ink on yuram, the symbiote just hibernates/goes dormant. they communicate telepathically but yubi can either borrow yuram’s mouth or pass notes to other people to talk to them. their big venom form is a huge mass of inkperson, pitch black; kinda scary but they only use that form for sneaking around, non-combative even though yuram wishes they were. ( but someday... 😉 )
chara insp! venom & eddie brock ( venom ), jang hari ( mad dog ), ji seungwan ( 2521 )
personality / misc! gemini sun, sagittarius moon, aries rising, a powerhouse clown. loves being argumentative & is always ready to go. probably willing to go to bat for you even if she’s only known you for 10sec bc she’s nice looking for a fight like that. can’t cook or clean but would d*e before admitting it or the many other things she sucks at. her common sense only exists in yubi, really really rebellious for fun & impulsive because she’s not patient enough & just wants instant gratification. in my head her bgm is any mgk x blackbear collab bc she’s got loser punk rock vibes. disaster really
PLOTS
petty crimes crew: exactly what this sounds like! just a ragtag buncha dummies spraying graffiti & pickpocketing, have been saying they’ll commit a heist since high school but still have no idea how to. lame gang things!!
free printer services: if you need help printing something or, ahem, ‘editing’ a document wink wink... she’s here to help
herald coworkers: yuram’s notorious for being a bit too headstrong & willing to investigate excessively for a story, asking way too many questions & only trusting herself. writes articles freakishly fast once she’s done tho. maybe a mentor or someone who has to keep her in check? fellow new hire jostling for a promotion?
snu friends: anyone from journalism, or their school’s broadcasting & journalism club? maybe someone who saw her ( yubi ) sign up for a million clubs but she never turned up too
bulleog apartments: neighbour plots!! yuram’s a petty little shit of a neighbour & somehow always up to something strange
commitment issues tm: yuram’s string of flings, past & current, or the (1) serious relationship she screwed up? ( also lowkey would love an enemies to friends / lovers / worse enemies but now we care for each other gdi plot )
thats all the ideas i have in my head but we can brainstorm instead!!

Green as the Unifying Color of Heedo and Yijin in Twenty-five Twenty-one
When we're first introduced to Heedo in the series, she's framed in an arch surrounded by vines wearing her signature green backpack, and when we first see Yijin, he's biking amongst the green trees of his new neighborhood. Interestingly, the camera captures their backs, as if to signify that they are moving forward towards something, and since this is before we have context of what will/has happened to them, so the shots of them feel full of potential and hope.
Tumblr media
Later, after Heedo sees the men yell at Yijin because of their lost money, we see Yijin framed in green when he talks about admiring Heedo's recklessness. This is the first time green has been used in conjunction with their more-than-superficial talks about their approaches to life.
Tumblr media
There's the visual motif of how when they first come together to experience urepentant joy together, it's in the verdant summer, surrounded by greenery. Green is the literal color of life in these shots.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And even as seasons change, we continue to see green when they are either trying to connect or actually connecting with each other.
They're bathed in green light when he's giving her a peptalk before the qualifiers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And in the deep of winter, even when green doesn't occur naturally, they seek the solace of each other's voicemails via the green payphones they stick coin after coin in, replaying the small connection they still have to each other as a way to seek and gain strength even through their separation from each other's lives.
Tumblr media
And when they finally meet again? When they're finally in the same camera shot again? The camera literally frames them via the background green of the bus and by the green window frame in the restaurant. This is their color of hope and connection.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And my favorite narrative use of green is how it's a main color of the fencing gym and the fencing arena. Where Heedo developed her ability to keep hoping and keep striving. She's learned this through countless bouts on the piste. The reason Yijin and Heedo have such a deep connection is because of her conviction to stay joyful in the face of loss and defeat, to keep going through every setback. And where is green always present?
Tumblr media
It all stems from here in the fencing arena, where Heedo learned to be happy through every loss, and where she's learning how to win again. What first brought them together was her rise in spirit from fencing and what brings them together now is her current rise in ranks in fencing. Her resolve and her connection to Yijin; it started with fencing.
Green is the color of growth and living and expansion, and for Heedo and Yijin, the color of their hope and friendship.

I’m going to say this louder for the people in the back: FORESHADOWING DOES NOT REPLACE CHARACTER OR NARRATIVE DEVELOPMENT.
The point of foreshadowing is to give hints about where the story and characters are going so they provide a payoff for the audience when it is revealed in full. ‘Oh, this is what you meant!’ It should be satisfying or at least understandable. Therefore, the writer needs to properly develop the narrative and characters to logically get to that foreshadowed point. You do not get to shortchange or altogether skip over this development because you ‘foreshadowed’ it so the audience should just accept this fate. You also do not get to place as many red herrings in the audience’s path as you want and then tell them you didn’t manipulate them because your foreshadowing was ‘clear’.
Twenty Five Twenty One committed both of these cardinal sins. I understood from very early on that future Yijin and Heedo were likely not together in the present timeline because the traveling in their professional lives when they were young caused them to break up amicably. Right person, wrong time. However, by having Minchae become invested in their relationship, it was possible that Yijin and Heedo with more stable adult lives might rekindle their romance with Minchae’s blessing. As it was also pretty obvious that Heedo had been divorced from her husband for years, especially with that comment at the funeral. But I was willing to accept they would be apart forever, if the writers wrote a compelling story. Unfortunately, the writers epic failed the downfall of their relationship so that it was sloppy at best and manipulative at worst. Many other viewers’ essays (which I’ve reblogged and tagged as ‘2521 meta’) have gone into detail on this so I won’t reiterate them. Instead, I will point out the two most egregious offenses which angered me and detracted from the story the writers wanted to tell that I have not seen mentioned yet.
First is when Yijin and Heedo reunite at the bus stop. This scene has no place in a narrative where they don’t get back together eventually. It uses four (yes, FOUR) major romantic endgame tropes together: (1) running to catch your lover before they leave town to reconcile, (2) meeting on opposite sides of a road/bridge/tunnel and then bridging the gap to meet them, (3) surrounded by cherry blossoms to ‘walk the flower path’ aka achieve happiness and success together, (4) a long passionate embrace. This is ROMANTIC AF. You only do this in the finale if your couple is endgame. In retrospect, this is an obvious red herring to string us along. No wonder the majority of the audience was hurt and confused over that ending when you give them a ton of standard romantic tropes and then say they avoided each other like the plague for the rest of their lives except that one random tv interview they were forced to do. What the hell?! Furthermore, it strips the final tunnel scene where adult Heedo reads from the lost notebook of any meaning or catharsis. After they met at the bus stop, there was no reason to ‘say’ anything more through the notebook since they could have said it in person. Whereas if the bus stop scene did not exist, there would be a ‘what if’ hanging over Heedo’s life. And the return of the notebook with Yijin’s response would be the closure that Heedo (and the audience) needed after all these years. But since the bus stop scene exists, the notebook’s return and contents are redundant to what had already happened.
Second is Minchae’s response to the lost notebook. For someone who has secretly and voraciously been devouring her mother’s notebooks, why would she not read this one? Why would she boldly state she’s going to write herself a better story when she doesn’t even know final details of her mother’s story so as to be able to avert the same fate herself? Also, wouldn’t it have been better to read all of her mother’s story to understand her better? I know the writers intend for Minchae to be able to dream now but that is in clear opposition to Minchae’s pragmatic personality and the fact that her mother lost the love her life. So only dream of professional glory? If Yijin and Heedo couldn’t have their happily ever after, why in the world are you trying to trick us into believing Minchae will? To be honest, Minchae’s response comes off more like the writers are telling us ‘We know you wanted a celebratory cake but here’s your broccoli cause it’s healthier. Don’t @ us. You want your happy ending. Go write fanfic.’
I do believe there was a way that they could have had made a bittersweet ending work but the lack of logical character and narrative development only left us with bitterness.

This will probably be the last time I'm going to say this but the ending of Twenty-five twenty-one is not only forced in regards to execution, but ignores character development and further more, detriments it.
~
Yijin would consult Heedo that NYC correspondent position — because he respects her as his long-time partner. They are in relationship for two years, during this time, it is already a good time to built more confidence and established communication in their relationship.
From what we've witnessed in their relationship for the rest of the episodes, they were shown to be good in communication, but apparently, when they entered a relationship, it had been their main problem.
~
The latter half of episode 15 ignored their capability to communicate. Heedo was shown to be having disappointments, but she's not communicating this with Yijin, very much in contrast to Heedo's character.
Heedo was honest and communicates early-on many times with Yijin when they were still not in a romantic relationship, even at the start of episode 15, she aired her expectations to him that she's willing to share all that is his.
Communication is important in a relationship and with their dynamics, they would work towards it to nurture what they have. However, this is in contrary to what the writer planned from the start, so the characters were deprived of the agency to communicate to allow more room for the break-up to happened.
~
Next, Yijin as someone who goes away when dealing with problems. I have been reading this and there are many citations of the parallels from episode 5 and 14, but we need to learn why this is nothing but character regression.
To do so, we need to learn the context, we cannot just parallel everything without proper understanding of the reasons why such certain events were executed.
In episode 5, Yijin went away without telling Heedo. However, while their bond is still special, nevertheless it's still a brief friendship. Now, this is where the light that fades theme could've been applicable. Yijin is thankful for the friendship with Heedo and Heedo as well. But what happens after this, only deepen their bond. They were apart because of circumstances, but their bond have only become stronger and after Yijin came back from Pohang, it continues to move in the right direction more special than friendship.
From these two events, we can see why Yijin not telling Heedo the NYC correspondent position is out of character just based from all the lessons and bond he has with Heedo.
Yijin and Heedo in episode 5 has a special brief friendship, but in episode 15, they have more solid bond and a relationship that they are both committed to working.
In that 2-year relationship, Heedo is already part of Yijin's goals and dreams, therefore, it is impossible and outright character assassination to make him apply in NYC correspondent position without telling Heedo.
Moving on, in episode 14, Yijin is not literally away but more like ashamed of what he has done with the person he consider his little sister, Yurim. At the start of episode 15, Heedo saw Yijin at his lowest. Heedo reached out to him and Yijin accepted Heedo's hand.
Heedo said to him that she's going to share all that is his and Yijin agreed. However, minutes before that episode ends, Yijin is said to have accepted the NYC position (see how out of character that is?)
~
Now, the foreshadowing and the parallel that Yijin will be similar to Heedo's mom. The reason why this is flawed because Yijin had always done something different from Heedo's mom. Yijin knew how Heedo is hurt by her mom, so he's careful not do things that would disappoint her.
Heedo's mom doesn't apologize and doesn't admit her mistakes, which led in Heedo being far away from her mom, not just because of the distance and the career itself. As I already said, Heedo knows Yijin is different from her mom. He puts effort and gives her unconditional support, similar to what her father gave her. Remember the ladder analogy? Heedo's father said that to her when he's still alive and Yijin said that to Heedo in episode 4.
It is such a weak writing to cite that as one of the reasons why the relationship will not work-out because all that he did is not to disappoint Heedo to the point of even switching departments.
~
Lastly, it's not true that Yijin still saw Heedo as someone to be protected from the real world because he can't share 9/11 to her. Here's the writing flaw, 9/11 was happening, but it's not Yijin who didn't share this to Heedo, it's the writer who failed to understand Heedo's depth and empathy.
Heedo watches news, she sees Yijin reporting it, but instead of seeing worriedness and empathy towards people who were victims of horrific event, the writer used that event to push the idea to Heedo that she and Yijin were growing apart.
Yijin was in a slump because of 9/11 and Heedo would have realized that was not his true self. She would realized that with his voice tone and with his choice of words when they were talking. She would realized how much she just being there was already enough for Yijin. She and together with Yijin's family, they would help him get treatment when he comes back in Korea.
~
Let's also not believe in the lie that we're told in the ending, Yijin and Heedo are NOT only lovers in good times. They both met in bad times. Heedo was stripped off the chance to continue fencing. Yijin's family became bankrupt.
But because they are there for each other, they are able to persevere and move forward. Every bad time when they are together becomes worth it to live and move pass through, because they receive strength just knowing they are there—regardless of their distance.
We didn't see the drama went to this direction in the end. We were deprived of seeing them grow more together gracefully. It is like when they finally bloom together as lovers, the narrative keeps on insisting to break them apart and that's the weakness of the ending and why it is a disservice to Heedo and Yijin's bond.

Thought of the "narrative" while riding the bus because i am going crazy hypothesizing over what really happened with yi jin and hee do in the present time. Tried convincing myself with "what zhe hellk they can't serve us a "sad ending" (yi jin/heedo not being end game)" when the themes of 25, 21 are hope, hurdling over odds, trust, confidence, patience, and hope (again)!!!"
fuck. but then i suddenly remembered how in ep. 2 the song 25, 21 played and a "single mother" scene was foreshadowed (to me, lol). Pretty sure there are other foreshadowing scenes but these two are the ones i can remember

i miss coming to your inbox and discussing where 2521 was going and u had so many thoughtful meta and i was so sure it was gonna go the way u were predicting... and i thought me being cynical would work in my favor so it would prove me wrong but nope. i cant believe how salty i still am. i want to so badly rewatch the drama but knowing how it ends i cant. i just wanna see them growing with each other again.
that's so sweet of you to say 🥺
i expected the best because we were continiously being shown the best, until the writer abandoned all writing logic and failed her own show. it's a huge waste on her part, but i think we did gain something she didn't intend for us to gain.
the heedo and yijin we met would have been very different without the additions of the actors, who made them into the characters we love. if the writer had succeeded in her intentions, we wouldn't have this amazing love story or these incredible characters, especially yijin, who really came alive through joohyuk's creative vision.
so although i can't rewatch the show either, i still feel incredibly lucky. i feel like i ran into a burning house and rescued something precious. i feel like if we could have had one happy ending before, we can now have thousands of happy endings all at once.
i wish this show had been wonderful from start to finish, a gift someone places in our hands. but if we didn't have to fight for these characters, we wouldn't feel so intensely about them a whole month later. i think there's something good in that, in our love for baekdo being tested and proven unbreakable.

Hello 2521 fam,
It has been a great joy to watch and rave about this show here on this hellsite (affectionate). In a few hours (depending on the time zones), all will be revealed. I'm just gonna enjoy the ride and be thankful to the team behind this masterpiece.
In the end, these characters and series have moved our hearts, made us appreciate the small joys of life and bask in the nostalgaia of youth again. It has given us many lessons, memorable lines and solid characters. Whatever the end be, I hope it doesn't anything away from that. It has been an honour to read everything from detailed meta to deranged thoughts on the 'twenty five twenty one' tag where I have camped out for the past few weeks. I will miss seeing the beautiful gifs, photosets, art and everything in between.
But we've still got these two days - let's make the most of it. So let's not be en garde and watch the finale episodes with the gusto we've watched the previous episode! It's what Hee Do will want us to do 😄

The Kiss and Why it Didn't Go Any Further
That new year's eve together, where they were on the precipice of a millennium, when the whole world was ready for things to change irrevocably forever, and the two of them were together, Heedo and Yijin, the first time they were alone in his room, unplanned.  There was a world full of tension just outside, anxious energy swirling about what was to come, and the two of them had their own tension simmering between them too, in that small little room, secluded in their own little world. A tension unique only to them. Alone together, not by design, but by fate; as no matter where life takes them, they always end up with each other.  Everyone else had a family to go back to, to spend their last moments of the millennium with, to beckon the future with. But Heedo and Yijin had nowhere else to go and no one else available to go to for comfort. Just each other, in this room. Once again they were brought together via their isolation.
And once again their joint isolation transformed into intimacy between them. This room that felt bigger than it ever had before now that everyone had left, and yet they stayed as close as they could to each other, acutely aware of the four walls surrounding them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just the two of them together, side-by-side, breathing the same air, Iiving their potential last moments together. Yijin said that if the world ended he would be "fine with whatever, if it happens now," because to him, being able to spend time with her, to live till the end the world with her companionship is enough. He knows he can't ask for anything more and he's content with that. His smile to her in that moment says as much.
Tumblr media
But for Heedo--a person who hasn't known connection and mutual affection for over eight years, who for so long thought no-one would show up for her and that she would go through life alone, and was okay with that--she's realized that she's no longer okay walking her path alone, not when she's found someone to hold on to, someone she doesn't want to let go of, someone she trusts, and someone she wants to express affection for. She wants something more than what they have now. And with a bit of her signature recklessness, she pulled their relationship forward and kissed Yijin. She was letting him know he's more than just a friend or a rainbow or scissors or a one-sided declaration of love. He is someone she has chosen to love back. Not in that liminal space between friends and lovers, but in every way she can, including romantically.
Tumblr media
And it was a tame kiss. It was important that it was a tame kiss, but just because it was chaste doesn't mean it was passionless. The way Yijin looked at Heedo once it was over showed that there was passion and real feeling beneath his reserved reaction. He was looking at her with his whole heart. He was breathless. He felt it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But he made sure it a one-sided kiss. He let her kiss him, he accepted her kiss, he didn't reject her, but he didn't kiss back. He purposefully held himself back, didn't deepen the kiss, and didn't take it any further. He was holding himself back just like he's trained himself to do when emotions are involved. Because any little give, any little leeway he allows himself, could lead to an unstoppable flood. He knows the tenacity he has when it comes to Heedo. When he directs that tenacity at other people, it's safe, it's to protect her. But he can't return her feelings and let that tenacity become burdensome to her; he's made it his resolve to not let any part of himself be a burden to her.
He said he wants to stay by her side and watch her grow into a great person. He's said he wants to fight for her to have only the best things in life, only the greatest experiences. He wants to shield her from any pain, from anyone who could harm her, but what if a change in their relationship turns him into someone with the potential to hurt her? Because with romance comes the potential for a break-up. Even if she's inviting him to become something more, he can't let himself be someone that holds onto her and weighs her down with the gravity of his passion. He can't let himself be torn apart from her because he let himself be reckless on this night and kiss her back and ruin what they have forever.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not when she has the whole world in front of her. Not when she is too precious to him and he can see himself breaking the precarious balance he's created where he can be there for her but not burden her, fight for her, sacrifice himself, but not surrender himself to his own feelings, love her with his entire being, but still be afraid of anything that could change their dynamic. He can indulge her and pretend it's still raining so they can stay close under the umbrella together, fend off anyone who might hurt her, do anything and everything he can for her, except kiss her back. He'd do anything to stop her from heartache, even if that means not reciprocating the kiss.
But it's also a selfish decision to not reciprocate. Because what if opening himself up to romance with her, someone he knows is still growing and learning, tears them apart? What if she grows apart from him, learns that she doesn't want to be with him? What if she looks back on this kiss as a mistake? What if everything they have is ruined and he has to face a life without her, the person that makes him the happiest?
Yijin loves her, it's plain as day. It's as much a part of his life as waking up every day, as intrinsic to him as breathing. He loves her so much it might as well be a universal law, like the gravity he believes in so much. But kissing her back and the implications it holds is not something he is ready for yet and he doesn't know if she is ready for yet, either. What if his feelings are opened so wide that their relationship buckles under the pressure of a romantic love? What if changing their relationship dynamic eventually drives her to run away from him again? He knows the emotional weight of love and loss, and he cannot go through that again, not with her.
He can't allow himself to be any part of reckless, not when the stakes are too high, not when he's gambling ruining a future together. He's vowed to protect her at all costs, but he's protecting himself, too. He said her disappearance from his life creates a feeling that is more abject than hate, and he is protecting himself from the possibility of a future with that hate. He won't cross the line that allows for any possibility of a reality where he could lose her or risk losing the love they already have now.
So in that small room on new year's eve, the tension is high, the feelings are there, but he loves her too much to kiss her back. But he can't pull away either. All he can do is sit there and accept her for all who she is, but not give himself back. They're on a precipice together, the world didn't end, the millennium changed, and they're still living. She kissed him and created something new between them. But he's not ready for this new world. It wasn't a rejection, but it wasn't an acceptance either. At least not yet.

full house was once heedo’s sole source of support and comfort from the highs and lows of fencing. it’s stories gave her hope and joy. she eagerly waited for the next volume to come out as she reminisced over what it had already given her.
now yijin has taken taken it’s place. a living breathing embodiment of those pages come to life who roots for her without question. who reflects back to her the hope and joy she brings to him. who listens to her message over and over the same way she listens to his message over and over as they support each other from afar.
it’s no wonder that heedo patiently waited to read full house until they met again. she had his high school broadcast tapes and voicemail to get her through. what are stories compared to the comfort and support of a person who believes in you.

Before I use all my energy to write everything I wanted to say regarding the ending of 2521—undoubtedly, 2521 warmed my heart with its brave, hopeful, and passionate portrayal of youth. Its theme of perseverance, going against the cruelty of the times, and that step ladder analogy regarding our dreams have given me so much hope on those days I feel so anxious for the next chapter of my life. I may not love the ending, but I will always remember those.
Now, while the journey has been beautiful, I was left deserted after I finally reached its destination. I was left feeling hollow and disappointed to what a beautiful cathartic drama it could have been to myself. So, allow me to share my points on the why I am feeling like this. If you stumble upon the points here which you don’t agree, I understand, though I want to be objective with this, this can still be affected by own biases. But if you relate, well, hugs to the both of us!
the bad and the villain
The forceful initial narrative in the latter episodes for Heedo and Yijin’s character and relationship despite their evolution and deterministic spirit to persevere towards the cruelty of the times. This led the drama to diverge from its initial theme of persevering against time and end on a note which is just painfully devastating.
For 13 episodes I witnessed the building of their friendship, to them being unconditional supporters of each other’s dreams and as individuals and to finally, witnessing their great love that finally bloomed. While at first, they met as a youth and a young adult, I’ve witnessed them fall in love with each other at an emotional level. So, for us who loved them and witness their beautiful love, it was painfully devastating to have them break apart due to external forces of an initial narrative that keeps on trying to fit itself into the characters and themes that evolved for so much more.
the friendship of Ko Yu Rim and Na Hee Do as equally important as the romance of Baek Yi Jin and Na Hee Do
For this, I wholeheartedly agree. While at first, I disliked Yurim’s unprofessional attitude towards Heedo, as soon as Heedo accepted her friendship as Yurim introduces herself as Injeolmi, my heart has already been warmed to accept them both in my heart. Their fencing matches as enemy rivals were already breathtaking to watch. I also have no complaints and loved how episode 14 highlighted Ko Yu Rim’s story and her friendship with Heedo. That last fencing match would always be the main highlight of this drama and it was such a beautiful moment to witness.
So now, get me in on the second point, but why despite in all its glory, and powerful writing, many can’t still appreciate that ending just because the romance of Yi jin and Hee do didn’t make it together? Personally, it is the lack of convincing narrative and execution that couldn’t conclude Baek Yi Jin and Na Hee Do’s great love that is satisfying for the people who rooted for them—a lot. It was the forceful narrative that it was just a first love—and not a great love that both Yi jin and Hee do would want to keep on fighting for. Whereas, in Yurim and Heedo’s friendship and rivalry, I was already satisfied during that Madrid match and the 2009 timeline where she visited Heedo to congratulate on her retirement, I got no more words for them and I’m really thankful for their great and ultimate friendship.
Now, this drama which one of its greatest themes is about perseverance and being stronger than the times still couldn’t justify the breakup of that great love of Yijin and Heedo in an organic way that it won’t feel like there were no longer residue of regrets. To some viewers and to me, from how we’ve given meaning and witnessed their love for 13 episodes up to the start of episode 15, what went wrong to their relationship were just pure character and relationship development regression that still could’ve been addressed to deliver a narrative that is true to its theme from the previous episodes.
realistic ending to the leads vs happy ending to the rest of characters
There are already many counter-thesis posts to the narrative of realism to the ending of 2521 for our leads, but I’ll still write mine. Hee do and Yi jin despite their great love, unconditional support for each other, and a love that is already unreal to the world, still couldn’t withstand the test of time, however, all the characters except them were given happy unrealistic endings. Here are the instances:
Yu rim and Ji woong. This couple who started as highschool sweethearts despite the harshness of times still delivered for 10 years and sweetly ended to a fencing proposal.
Yu rim who became a Russian national and a fencing athlete and whose her parents were her greatest priority and was still feeling extremely responsible because of that parental love.
Ji Woong who’s still studying and having part time jobs to buy a ticket to visit Yurim in russia and who also have unresolved issues with his mother and father. Jiwoong who also became a CEO who’s probably became very busy because running a business ain’t easy.
And yet, the relationship of this two, what the show didn’t take much time to build, still, despite all odds were still able to make it. It is not unrealistic for them to be together, and I don’t want to undermine their love because it seems pure to me as well and I sincerely rooted for them. But the main question is, how they were able to make it?
For 10 years they were able to beat all the odds but we weren’t privy to their challenges as the couple and how they’re able to solve it. And in the name of realism, it feels a laugh to the pain of the great and unreal indispensable love of Yijin and Heedo that was broken apart because the show needed to complete its remaining narrative.
We are expected to believe that they were just able to make it and had the healthy and smooth sailing relationship for those 10 years. Relationships experience hiccups, minor and major fights, but there were efforts and communications to it and it’s an active choice to keep on choosing your person at the end of the day.
Whereas, Heedo and Yijin weren’t allowed to have the chance to communicate and talk healthily after their first major break-up fight at the tunnel. Sure, they embraced each other and bid each other a heartbreaking goodbye. However, the truth that there’s still no proper communication still withstands, and that’s why we have the breakup words written in Heedo’s diary and it is heartbreaking for me, that only after 20 years, she’s able to free the guilt of having said those words.
Are there other narrative choices than that? Yes. However, those two characters didn’t have that chance not because it is all for the better, but only because that is the intention of the narrative—to break them apart as first loves who supported one another from apart (and never meet again as friends…ever). Though as the viewers, we know that they still love each other and even if we want to push them similar to how Jiwoong pursued Yurim in the airport to realize that their love is still worth fighting for and that distance and times that were breaking them apart in 2521 were just a big wall they need to climb up together, we are powerless because the narrative that the creators build up in last minutes of episode 15 had already been final, irrevocable and intended to permanently break them on the last episode.
Hence, if the narrative of breaking up with your first love was not the initial intention from the start, we could still have witnessed a strong relationship rooted from friendship and unconditional support that stood against time with Heedo and Yijin, which is convincing and not unrealistic at all because it could’ve been a chance to show the character growth from both sides towards a healthy relationship. Had it been different, it could’ve been a great highlight and true from the theme that the drama already established for the rest of its episodes.
In respect to the creators and their choice of the narrative for Yijin and Heedo’s story, I believe what could have been done for it to become acceptable to the viewers was if the pacing had been fixed and there were rooms to show trials and errors before it had finally been broken apart.
Now, I did not enumerate this to say that all those 15 episodes and their love was no longer important just because the two leads I am are rooting for did not last as a couple, I’m just trying to pinpoint the inconsistent narrative choices of the creators in the ending as opposed to the realism narrative.
Lastly, realism as the theme of the drama. Like the pacing problem I already pinpointed, I do not agree that realism is its main theme. Starting from episode 1, the drama didn’t have the realism vibe starting from its color palette, instead, it is spunky, hopeful and had a very comical feeling, so I beg to disagree on that. The only time I believed it changed its tone is from the moment in episode 15 when Yijin is thrown on the abyss of the cruel narrative of 9/11.
Okay moving forward…
the cheap
Ji Seungwan meeting again with Yijin’s older brother in 2009, which I can also add to the happy unrealistic ending category and seriously, a scene that I’ll just laugh at for further disappointment.
the neutral
Ji Seungwan and her becoming a variety show assistant director. To be honest, I am happy for Ji Seungwan having this job. She can choose the job that she knows will make her happy because she doesn’t need to fit her life to people’s expectation—but if she really did become a lawyer, president, and whatsoever, I’ll still be 100% happy for her. Now, for the complaints she aired on her job, I believe those were just pretty normal sentiments. We can complain all they day long with our jobs, but we’ll still be sad without it anyway (this happens to me and my projects).
However, similar to everyone who rooted for this girl a lot, after her quitting on school and standing up for justice, I also wanted to see more of her growth in 2009. And I want to know what happened to her DJ Wanseung pirate radio show.
the disappointing
Min chae. Since we are able to witness this great story because she’s reading the diary, despite others criticism on the present timeline, I still expected a lot from her and thought of her as a pivotal character. But the ending gave her very little of importance and a very brief screen time.
Yes, Min chae decided to continue ballet again and inspired to write her own story as a youth, but that felt extremely…flat…to…me. I already expected that, but what I wanted was more for her. Maybe, show moving scenes with her mother or at the least, I see a passion from her to continue ballet, but it didn’t deliver…to me…yeah. I kept reading that this show isn’t just about romance, and I highly agree so instead of having almost the whole runtime trying to justify the breakup of Yijin and Heedo, the creators should have given much more of Minchae especially on its closing.
Now, what’s also the point of Minchae reading the passionate first love romance of her mother? Is that just for the fun of it or a bait from the producers to show the possibility of Heedo and Yijin getting together?
2009 and the present, what about the friendships?
The cruelty of the ending was not that Heedo and Yijin only had broken up for good, but they didn’t meet each other again or allowed to have a friendly talk after all those years. The break up is already one thing, but at the very least they should have stayed friends because before anything else—they are best friends.
Their last meeting is in 2009 and while it is good that in their flashback at that interview, they only remembered the good memories that allowed them to be there on their success (La La Land ending, was that the plan?), it is sad that those two persons we’ve seen to draw strength from each other and were first and foremost, best friends before they started becoming lovers, never ask each other again how they are doing in life, greeted on important occasions or met at all for all those 20 years. Just. Utterly. Devastating.
Next, Yu rim and Hee do, my favorite besties while probably still have huge respect and support to each other, didn’t find the need to reach in other’s lives again seeing how Min chae doesn’t even know her at all in the present. Just impossible and unrealistic.
The 2009 talk in Seungwan’s father death (we didn’t even learn she still had one). I just hoped we got better moments instead of that.
the justification: it is heedo’s story
I have read posts concluding that it is Heedo’s story after all as a way to justify why we didn't see the present lives of the other main characters and to all the plot holes that were never addressed.
My main problem with this is because the creators purposefully included those scenes and lines and yet they weren’t addressed.
We spent the first five episodes of the drama with also Yijin’s arc, we saw his struggle, saw him break down in episode 10 and have a vulnerable moment with this father and saw his traumatic experience in 9/11. The rest, we were shown his nightmare that Heedo would be no longer in his life and again, very devastating. So, how can that justify that it is just Heedo’s story when they released more from it outside of what’s written in the diary? Then we had a time jump and showed that finally, he’s able to reunite his family, however, that scene was so little and I felt like the ending didn’t give him a fulfilling resolution that I wanted to see from all the struggles the creators created to fit its depressing narrative. At least, a moment where I see him talking with his father and mother and brother, might be probably enough. We also didn’t have a closure on the line from episode 10 “you were my consolation ten years ago”, which left me being extremely disappointed.
the depressing lines
First, the moments of youth that Heedo dared say would last forever were just an illusion she loved living in it.
Second, youth is just a practice.
To be honest, those key points from her present-day monologue as she feels nostalgic in the tunnel can be open to many interpretations and if it resonated with you, that’s good. But to me, it just created a bigger void in my heart. Like others, I expected that, “While moments of youth already passed, as you age, you can still create more meaningful moments with your family and loved ones. That even your youth days already passed, it is still not late to pursue what gives you passion.” I know Heedo already fixed her relationship with her mother, had a daughter whom I know she loves so much, and have that wood workshop as her own private self-place and she dedicates to her father as well and to her moments of youth, but it just wasn’t highlighted better in the ending that will allow others to fully feel her happiness in the present. In fact, I felt like the present timeline didn’t have a good amount of screentime to create a beautiful balance to the nostalgia they want to portray.
When present Heedo said on episode 10 that forgetting things are not bad, I still thought she’s full of wisdom and expected that it will give me a positive outlook on the ending continuing from that statement of hers.
Now, for the youth is just a practice statement, this hurt my heart when Yijin from episode 16 said this, not because it is realistic, but to me, it feels undermining the struggles and perseverance of youth in their everyday lives. In these times, where youth are being ridiculed because of their age and lesser experience in life compared to the adults, that statement seems to be counterproductive. And it is also romanticized in present Heedo’s monologue—it’s just probably me—but I disliked the words they chose for the ending.
now, the good
While many things became depressing to me in the end of 2521, I still want to give an applause for the actors for giving me a haunting traumatic experience of the breakup created by the cruel narrative force of its creators that despite the great love of the characters they still wouldn't make it. The rest of the good things are for creating strong female leads, for concluding Heedo and Yurim’s friendship in a beautiful way though I hoped more to see them in the present and still, for having a non-toxic male lead character and a great love story that will be nurtured in my heart.
bonus: the alternative narrative as opposed to Yijin and Heedo’s breakup
Aside from the healthy communication that they deserved in episode 16 after their argument at the tunnel, I do not believe in the narrative choice that Yijin will apply for that New York City’s correspondent position without Heedo’s knowledge.
If ever that Yijin would want to apply for that is only because of a greater calling or responsibility he’s feeling from his job as a reporter and not due to financial status as opposed to what others are telling. Yijin, who values Heedo as his life-long partner and who loves her a lot and respects her individuality and intelligence, would never ever not consult Heedo before applying for that position.
That is the last straw and the cruelest narrative choice that the creators pursued, and I will not accept that because that is not the Yijin I knew. If Yijin wishes to pursue that, he would first talk to Heedo and from there, that will allow the room for him to fully open his heart to her and that would be such another heartbreaking but meaningful highlight in their relationship.
Moreover, if the creators will only be after realism in a truthful way, Yijin will be able to get support from his family in Korea regarding his traumatic terrorist experience in New York, especially from his father. Remember, he is in the height of a terrorist attack—no family will not be concerned for their family member during those times. It is just a pure cruel choice from the creators to put Yijin in that doomed and traumatic situation. It also allows the pursuance of the narrative that it will be too much for Heedo to take care of him—but still, people keep forgetting that he’s her best friend before they become romantic partners.
Lastly, Yijin’s hope is not only with Heedo, but also through his family—father, mother, uncle and to Yi Hyun, his little brother.
So yeah, this is not enough to cover everything, but I’m still glad to pour it here. While I’m still disappointed with the ending and I’m disheartened by the narrative cruelty of the creators as the drama reached its end, I realized that I am still thankful for it that I got to know my comfort, and beloved characters, Heedo and Yijin, and for that, I think that’s enough for me to give them the happy endings I have in my heart stored for them and also to the rest of our squad—Yu Rim, Jiwoong, and Seungwan.
