new year, slightly new look for the 20gal :-)
old version and some notes under the readmore
i haven't been able to do anything other than water changes and top-offs with this tank since august, when i moved it back to my parents' place, so this was long overdue!
the plants had all uprooted and gathered at the left side of the tank. i replanted them and added 3 java ferns + a new small piece of driftwood.
unfortunately, mango (honey gourami) passed away in november. the tank feels empty without him... opal (betta fish) is also starting to slow down. she's around 2 years old now, so that's not a surprise, but it's still a bummer :/
my long-term goal is to reduce the stock in the tank and convert it to a setup with only shrimp and very small fish like the harlequin rasboras. maybe a pair of sparkling gouramis, too.. something simple.

fish? fish?? show us fish please fish please show show fish??
here he is!!! frizz!!!! one of the spiciest bettas ive ever had (most ones i get happen to be pretty mellow) and i love him so much. he’s had some fin problems the last couple weeks (you can see the end of his tail is a bit ripped) but he’s healing up nicely. i love his colors, i see ones like him so uncommonly.. and if you look at him in the first image, you can see how his pelvic fins are always crossed over one another! i think it’s cute.

keep my grandpa's betta in your thoughts. despite being a man who likes science and takes meticulous care of his plants, he's also stubborn and won't change how he keeps his fish. he has a stagnant unheated 29-gallon in his basement with a single betta. i saw it yesterday and it floats sideways at the top and hardly moves.
today I'm gonna bring a spare filter, (with a cycyled biowheel from one of my filters) decorations, and unchlorinated water from my house, but i only have a tiny spare heater idk if it'll work. if i just do it myself he'll probably let me, i just hope I'm not too late.
