Philippine Heritage Society Ball and 2022 Filipino Heritage Awards a testament to the beauty and richness of our Filipino Heritage
Proud to be Filipino!
Tumblr media
What a night of celebrating Filipino music, Filipino Heritage and all things Filipino!  All roads led to the Fiesta Pavilion of the historic Manila Hotel last July 25 for the Philippine Heritage Society Ball and 2022 Filipino Heritage Awards.  Guests arrived at the reception area dressed to the nines in formal Filipiniana and to partake of the unlimited coffee by Curve Coffee Collaborators and cocktails by Destileria Limtuaco.  Special exhibitors lined up the reception area of the hall including media partners Globaltronics/PARC Foundation and Light TV; presenter Greenfield Development Corporation, MX3, Apo View Hotel, Organique,  ….,.The whole area, including the ballroom, was tastefully styled by Carmen Afzelius of Floral Fairy, who used bamboo, anahaw, succulents, sampaguita, capiz shells and other accents to give the entire event an elegant and festive atmosphere.
The red-carpet pre-event was hosted by the fabulous Raymond Villanueva, who interviewed the attendees and guests about their advocacies, views on heritage, and whose creations they were wearing.  Photographers and media personnel snapped away as each guest was being interviewed.
By 7pm, the guests were ushered into the grand ballroom for the main event.  The show was divided into three main portions:  the Heritage Waltz, the Awards ceremony, and the fashion walk titled Harana sa Rampa.
Tumblr media
As the lights dimmed and the announcer called the name of each participant, Philippine Heritage Society members and their partners made their way to the dance floor to dance to “Tanda de Valse”, composed by Jose “Pitong” Ledesma and choreographed by Dalah Pia. The men wore barong tagalog made from local materials like pina while the women wore beautiful designed baro’t saya which swayed gently as the dancers went through their routine. They finished their dance to resounding applause by the appreciative audience.
The awards ceremony was both grand and solemn.  As each awardee walked slowly up the stage to receive their award, the audience was silent in reverence while the announcer listed each awardee’s accomplishments. The awardees present included the owners of Sarao Motors (Awardee for Design), the owners of Aristocrat (Awardee for Service), Lisa Macuja-Elizalde (Awardee for Dance), Attorney Dominador Buhain (Awardee for Publishing), and National Artist Fides Cuyugan Asensio (Awardee for Music).
Dinner was a delight for the senses as Manila Hotel chefs outdid themselves with a tasteful menu of Filipino classics.  Performances by LyrOPERA artists: Randy Gilongo, Calie Ng, Nina Campos (who also emceed), Bernadette Mamauag, Sherine Ann Koa, Eden Dumlao, and the Philippine Tenors, serenaded the guests throughout the evening.
Tumblr media
The fashion walk “Harana sa Rampa” was definitely one of the most anticipated portions of the entire evening.  Exquisite Filipiniana fashions designed by some of the country’s top designers (Oskar Peralta, Edgar Madamba, Edgar San Diego, Ditta Sandico, Peri Diaz, Frankie de Leon, Petra Lim, Ronaldo Arnaldo, Ole Morabe and Lito Perez) were worn by luminaries and fashion icons including Ambassador Vic and Connie Garcia, David and Mache Ackerman, Jennifer Angeles, Malou Brewer, Danda Buhain, Aileen Campos, Tess Castro, Maggie Chavez, Ruby Chua, Joel Cruz and kids, Adrea Endicio, Aileen Garalde, Loubelle Gardiola, Rina Garcia, Genieve Jamisola, Rose Ranola Jordan, Rose Santiago Licup, Cora Lozada, Jessie Maloles, Ann Marie Morales, Mhel Pechera, Genevieve Qui, Minerva Racuya, Charito San Pedro, Michelle Media Sison, Lina Castillo Sullivan, Coco and Chanel Sun, Nikki Tang, Elaine Timbol, Dr. Mary Jane Torres, Flora Urquico, Sophia Yara and Mayor Krisel Lagman.  The models succeeded in showing their clothes elegantly and in the best light while they were being serenaded to kundiman classics like Mutya ng Pasig, Ang Maya, Maalaala mo kaya, etc. performed by LyrOPERA singers.
The evening ended with a grand toast wishing everyone a bright future led by PHS founder Sherwin Sozon with fellow founders Tess Castro, Nathan de Leon and PHS Committee Chairperson Mache Torres Ackerman.
Overall the Philippine Heritage Society Ball and 2022 Filipino Heritage Awards were a testament to the beauty and richness of our Filipino Heritage.  Mabuhay!

Steve Lacy is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer who has made a name for himself as a member of the alternative R&B band The Internet and as a solo artist. Born in Compton, California, in 1998, Lacy grew up in a musical environment, influenced by his mother's gospel singing and his father's Filipino heritage. He developed an interest in the guitar at the age of seven, inspired by the video game Guitar Hero. He later joined the jazz band at his high school, where he met Jameel Bruner, the keyboardist of The Internet. Bruner invited Lacy to join the band as a guitarist and producer, and Lacy made his debut on their third studio album, Ego Death, in 2015.
His involvement with the Internet opened up many opportunities for him to collaborate with other artists and showcase his talents. He co-produced and was featured on songs by J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Tyler, the Creator, Kali Uchis, Solange, Vampire Weekend, and more. He also released his own solo projects, starting with a six-track EP titled Steve Lacy's Demo in 2017. The EP was recorded entirely on his iPhone using a plug-in for his guitar called an iRig. It received critical acclaim for its lo-fi aesthetic and eclectic blend of R&B, funk, rock, and soul.
He followed up his EP with his first full-length album, Apollo XXI, in 2019. The album was more ambitious and personal than his previous work, exploring themes of sexuality, identity, and self-discovery. Lacy came out as bisexual on the song "Like Me," featuring DAISY. He also experimented with different genres and sounds, incorporating elements of jazz, psychedelic, pop, and ambient music. The album was nominated for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards.
Lacy's most recent album, Gemini Rights, was released in 2022. The album was a commercial and critical success, peaking at number seven on the Billboard 200 chart. It featured the hit single "Bad Habit," which became Lacy's first song to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 after going viral on TikTok. The song was also nominated for Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, while the album won Best Progressive R&B Album.
One of Lacy's most notable collaborators is Tyler, the Creator, who has been a fan and friend of Lacy since they met through Odd Future. Lacy co-produced and was featured on Tyler's songs "911 / Mr. Lonely" and "Running Out of Time." They also performed together at several festivals and events. Lacy has praised Tyler for his creativity and innovation, saying that he is "one of my favorite artists ever." Tyler has also expressed his admiration for Lacy's music and style, calling him "a genius" and "a legend."
Steve Lacy is one of the most influential and versatile artists of his generation. He has proven himself as a guitarist, singer, songwriter, and producer who can create music across genres and platforms. He has also been a trailblazer for queer representation and expression in mainstream music. He continues to evolve and experiment with his sound and vision, inspiring fans and peers alike. Steve Lacy is not only a star of The Internet, but also a star of the future.

THE NEW SOCIETY
Tumblr media
This is a digitized version of an article from The Times’s print archive, before the start of online publication in 1996. To preserve these articles as they originally appeared, The Times does not alter, edit or update them.
Occasionally the digitization process introduces transcription errors or other problems; we are continuing to work to improve these archived versions.
President Marcos of the Philippines insisted in his book “Notes on the New Society” that martial law, the device that enabled him to impose one‐man rule, is only a “temporary expedient” and that “we cannot make of this a permanent institution in our national life.” But three and a half years later, Mr. Marcos appears determined not only to perpetuate his regime but to name as his successor his wife, Imelda, undiscouraged by the Peron experience in Argentina.
It evidently was to dramatize burgeoning opposition to this trend that former President Macapagal sought—but unfortunately was quickly refused—asylum in the American Embassy residence after writing and circulating a bold book calling on the armed forces and the suspended national assembly to end Marcos's “lawless dictatorship” and hold free elections. It is regrettable that the Ford Administration has been unwilling even to express sympathy with the hopes of many Filipinos for restoration of the American heritage of democratic freedom that Mr. Marcos has tried to destroy.
The American grant of commonwealth status to the Philippines in 1936, with a pledge of independence a decade later, was a beacon of hope to many other colonial peoples in Asia then and during the Japanese occupations of World War II. The civil liberties and democratic ways established during four decades of American suzerainty, followed by a quarter‐century of self‐rule under an American‐style constitution, were temporarily extinguished in 1972 by Mr. Marcos's decrees, press seizures and thousands of political arrests.

National Authors/Writer's in the Philippines
The term writer has been used as a synonym of author, although the latter term has a somewhat broader meaning and is used to convey legal responsibility for a piece of writing, even if its composition is anonymous, unknown or collaborative. Author most often refers to the writer of a book. Writers produce articles, reports, books and other texts. Writers are paid to write a variety of texts, including books and articles.
List of Filipino Authors/Writer's:
Nick Joaquin (1917–2004)
F. Sionil José (1924–2022)
José Rizal (1861–1896)
Gilda Cordero-Fernando (1930–2020)
Gilbert Luis R. Centina III (1947–2020)
Lualhati Bautista (1945–2023)
N. V. M. Gonzalez (1915–1999)
Nick Joaquin (1917–2004)
Tumblr media
Winning the National Artist award for Literature, Nick Joaquín is probably the most esteemed writer the Philippines has produced. Joaquin came from a well-educated family and was published at the early age of 17. After winning a scholarship in a nationwide essay contest, he left the Philippines to study in Hong Kong.
Nick Juaquin Famous Work
The Woman Who Had Two Navels and Tales of the Tropical Gothic
Tumblr media
On his return to Manila he worked for many years as a journalist, and his highly intellectual writing raised the standards of journalism in the country. Joaquin’s book, The Woman With Two Navels is essential reading in Philippine literature. However many of his short stories, such as “May Day Eve,” are extremely accessible and enjoyable for those new to the Philippines.
F. Sionil José (1924–2022)
Tumblr media
A writer deeply concerned with social justice, F. Sionil Jose’s novels have been translated into 22 languages, and he’s one of the most widely read Filipino authors. Sionil Jose’s Rosales Saga is a five-volume work that follows the Samson family and their changing fortunes over a 100-year timeframe.
F. Sionil José Famous Work
My Brother, My Executioner
Tumblr media
Sionil Jose’s books are especially illuminating for anyone interested in provincial life in the Philippines, the revolution against Spain, and the framework of the Filipino family. His anti-elitist views have made him a somewhat unpopular author within the Philippines, but Sionil Jose’s works are among the most highly acclaimed internationally of any Filipino writer. He won the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Literature in 1980.
José Rizal (1861–1896)
Tumblr media
The Philippines’ national hero was also a prolific writer, poet, and essayist. Jose Rizal’s two novels, Noli me Tangere and El Filibusterismo were social commentaries that sharply revealed the injustices of Spanish colonization while praising the Filipino in his most natural state. The novels, which are surprisingly wry and romantic, crystallized the growing anti-Spanish sentiment and were banned within the Philippines.
José Rizal Famous Work
Noli me Tangere and El Filibusterismo
Tumblr media
The execution of Jose Rizal at 35 years old set off the Philippine Revolution and paved the way for the country’s independence. Even without these dramatic events, Rizal’s books and his final poem, “Mi Ultimo Adios,” stand on their own literary merit, and have influenced scores of Filipino writers.
Gilda Cordero-Fernando (1930–2020)
Tumblr media
Gilda Cordero-Fernando is a multiawarded writer, publisher and cultural icon from the Philippines. She was born in Manila, has a B.A. from St. Theresa's College-Manila, and an M.A. from the Ateneo de Manila University.
Gilda Cordero-Fernando Famous Work
The Butcher, The Baker and The Candlestick Maker
Tumblr media
Cordero-Fernando has two landmark collection of short stories: The Butcher, The Baker and The Candlestick Maker (1962) and A Wilderness of Sweets (1973). These books have been compiled and reissued later as Story Collection (1994). Another book, Philippine Food and Life, was published in 1992. Together with Alfredo Roces, Cordero-Fernando worked on Filipino Heritage, a 10-volume study on Philippine history and culture published by Lahing Pilipino in 1978. Afterwards, she founded GCF Books which published a dozen titles that deal with various aspects of Philippine culture and society. Cordero-Fernando has also worn numerous other hats as a visual artist, fashion designer, playwright, art curator and producer. In February 2000, she produced a hugely successful extravaganza entitled Luna: An Aswang Romance.
Gilbert Luis R. Centina III (1947–2020)
Tumblr media
Gilbert Luis R. Centina III was a Filipino-American Roman Catholic poet who won critical appreciation for his poetry books, novels, and a book of literary criticism. Apart from English, Centina also wrote in two Philippine languages and in Spanish. Over the course of his career, Gilbert Luis R. Centina III won several prestigious awards, including the Catholic Authors Award.

IAN CHRISTOPHER DEPATILLO
HOM006-FB1-TOURISM12-1
Iloilo City is on Panay Island in the Philippines. It's known for its Spanish colonial churches and old houses. On Jaro Plaza, Jaro Cathedral has a shrine to the local patron saint, Our Lady of the Candles. Nelly’s Garden is an iconic 1920s mansion. Museo Iloilo explores local history. The Iloilo Esplanade is a pathway along the Iloilo River. To the west, the 18th-century Miagao Church has an ornate sandstone facade.
There is a place called "City of Love" but the question is "mahal is ba?" Iloilo province is a part of Panay, a heart-shaped island found right smack in the middle of the Philippines. This central location truly proves handy, especially for travelers who are looking to explore other parts of the country, but more on that later. Panay Island is also situated in the western portion of the Visayas, one of the Philippines’ three major island groups (the other two are Luzon in the north and Mindanao in the south).
Tumblr media
Not to brag, but Iloilo’s capital bagged the ASEAN Clean Tourist City Award 2020–2022 in 2019 and was officially awarded in a ceremony in January 2020, along with two other Philippine cities. The award is pretty much self-explanatory — it honors cities that are clean and green, and that have taken it upon themselves to push for more sustainable tourism efforts. In the past decade, Iloilo City has rehabilitated a dying river and turned it into a picturesque attraction, built more infrastructures for business tourism, and even saved a decrepit heritage building from being torn down by transforming it into a museum. To see the final products of these pivotal tourism projects, you can include the Iloilo River Esplanade, the Iloilo Convention Centre, and the Museum of Philippine Economic History in your Iloilo itinerary! Already so much to do in the city and we haven’t even begun planning your great Iloilo escape yet! There are already many bike lanes in the capital, but plans for a comprehensive bike lane that cuts through the Iloilo International Airport as well as the city’s seven districts are underway. And if you’re a serious cyclist, you should know that Iloilo City also hosts several cycling events for all levels and ages!
Tumblr media
In Iloilo, they celebrate Dinagyang Festival. Dinagyang Festival is one of the biggest and world-class festivals in the Philippines. It traces the history of devotion to the Holy Child Jesus popularly known to Filipino devotees as Sr. Sto. Nino.
Tumblr media
It’s a given. Ilonggos are well known for being malambing, that sweet disposition perceptible in their affectionate manner of speaking. One may wonder, “Do Ilonggos even know how to get angry?” Yesss!! Absolutely. Pero malambing nga lang. These are examples of Hiligaynon words.
"Makaon ta anay" - Let's eat First
"Yuhum" - an expression of happiness
"Gwapa" - Beautiful
"Inday/Nonoy" - other than nicknames. Inday (for girls) and Nonoy (for boys) are used as terms of endearment for children.
Tumblr media
Iloilo is known for food also. Iloilo has many restaurants that serve beautiful and delicious foods. These are those foods that you must try.

Six Heritage Houses in Iloilo City Where the Old Rich Ilonggos Lived
1. Lizares Mansion
The Lizares Mansion is the Spanish-American white house of Iloilo. Built in 1937, Lizares Mansion is a Spanish-American inspired house that is considered as one of the beautiful heritage and ancestral houses in Iloilo. It is a testament of the hard work of Don Emiliano Lizares of Jaro, who was a sugar baron. The mansion was sold to the Dominican Order and was converted to a school. It now serves as the grounds of Angelicum School Iloilo, a private Catholic school. The best time to go there is during Christmas. Aside from it being open for simbang gabi (dawn mass), it is also converted to a Christmas attraction, with the school administration putting up lights and decorations.
2. Yusay-Consing Mansion (Molo Mansion)
The newest renovated mansion in Iloilo is now a place for history and food. Built in the 1920s, the Yusay-Consing Mansion across St. Anne Parish Church in Molo, Iloilo City is one of the most beautiful houses ever built in the City of Love. For about a century now, it has continuously stunned locals and tourists. In 2015, it was renovated to cater to visitors during the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ministerial Meetings. Whenever tourists and locals visit the place, they can also get a taste of blue ternate (butterfly pea) flower ice cream at Table Matters.
3. Nelly’s Garden
Nelly Garden & Tours Services. The Beaux-Arts mansion owned by Hofileña-Lopez family which was built in 1928 is one of the first heritage houses in the city. Don Vicente Lopez and Donya Elena Hofileña’s house is now open to the public for photoshoots, receptions, and even tourism events. If you are planning to hold a scenic and historic event in Iloilo, Nelly’s Garden can accommodate around 100 people in the main house and about 150 to 500 people at the estate. The Hofileña -Lopez Mansion is accessible 24/7 and is located just along the main street of Jaro district.
4. Ledesma Mansion
Ledesma Mansion, the forgotten palace of Iloilo City.
Iloilo City the Heart of the Philippines. If only this building was restored, Ledesma Mansion might be the most beautiful to ever exist in Iloilo City. A few have entered this old mansion by Don Joaquin Ledesma and Donya Pilar Arguelles. That’s because many have utilized the palatial house as a venue for horror video shoots. The Ledesma Mansion is located at the corner of Seminario Street, Jaro, Iloilo City. It is within walking distance of Jaro Cathedral, one of the notable churches in Iloilo to visit. Also known as the National Shrine of Our Lady of Candles, it houses the Jaro Cathedral.
5. Casa Mariquit
People can have their family portraits and pre-nuptial photos taken at Casa Mariquit
Jaro is one of the oldest districts in Iloilo City. Thus, this 200-year-old house owned by the wife of former Vice President Fernando Lopez has now become one of the main tourist attractions in Iloilo. Built in 1803, it known by its popular name Casa Mariquit. It is flanked by a banyan tree at the entrance which makes the place a bit magical and intriguing.
6. Camiña Balay nga Bato
One can experience Ilonggo culture and tradition at Camiña Balay nga Bato
Camiña Balay nga Bato (Stone House) has been turned into a museum which contains antiques and memorabilia reflective of Ilonggo traditions and culture. Its difference from the other refurbished old heritage houses is that it also caters to the gastronomic needs of its visitors.
Tumblr media
A lot of pretty places that you must and will enjoy visiting here in Iloilo.
