ARTICLE ABOUT POST EDSA REVOLUTION CONTRIBUTION IN THE PHILIPPINES LITERATURE
1986 EDSA REVOLUTION
•The year 1986 democrats the beginning of the new scene in the unfolding narrative of contemporary Philippine Literature
Tumblr media
The year 1986 demarcates the beginning of the new scene in the unfolding narrative of contemporary Philippine literature.
It saw the fall of the dictatorship that President Marcos set up on September 21, 1972, when he placed the Philippines under martial rule, initiating a regime that did not only suppress the writer's right to free expression but also created conditions that made collaboration and cooperation convenient choices for artists struggling for and survival.
However, when the enemy were overthrown in 1986, the literary activity showed a certain disorientation manifesting itself in a proliferation of concerns taken up by individual writers and groups.

THE NEW SOCIETY

This is a digitized version of an article from The Times’s print archive, before the start of online publication in 1996. To preserve these articles as they originally appeared, The Times does not alter, edit or update them.

President Marcos of the Philippines insisted in his book “Notes on the New Society” that martial law, the device that enabled him to impose one‐man rule, is only a “temporary expedient” and that “we cannot make of this a permanent institution in our national life.” But three and a half years later, Mr. Marcos appears determined not only to perpetuate his regime but to name as his successor his wife, Imelda, undiscouraged by the Peron experience in Argentina.
It evidently was to dramatize burgeoning opposition to this trend that former President Macapagal sought—but unfortunately was quickly refused—asylum in the American Embassy residence after writing and circulating a bold book calling on the armed forces and the suspended national assembly to end Marcos's “lawless dictatorship” and hold free elections. It is regrettable that the Ford Administration has been unwilling even to express sympathy with the hopes of many Filipinos for restoration of the American heritage of democratic freedom that Mr. Marcos has tried to destroy.
The American grant of commonwealth status to the Philippines in 1936, with a pledge of independence a decade later, was a beacon of hope to many other colonial peoples in Asia then and during the Japanese occupations of World War II. The civil liberties and democratic ways established during four decades of American suzerainty, followed by a quarter‐century of self‐rule under an American‐style constitution, were temporarily extinguished in 1972 by Mr. Marcos's decrees, press seizures and thousands of political arrests.

He was executed by the Spanish colonial government for the crime of rebellion after the Philippine Revolution broke out; it was inspired by his writings. Though he was not actively involved in its planning or conduct, he ultimately approved of its goals which eventually resulted in Philippine independence.
Rizal is widely considered one of the greatest heroes of the Philippines and has been recommended to be so honored by an officially empaneled National Heroes Committee. However, no law, executive order or proclamation has been enacted or issued officially proclaiming any Filipino historical figure as a national hero.[9] He wrote the novels Noli Me Tángere (1887) and El filibusterismo (1891), which together are taken as a national epic, in addition to numerous poems and essays.
