Cinamon Hadley - the Inspiration for Death of the Endless
Cinamon Hadley, the inspiration for the character design of Neil Gaiman’s Death of The Endless featured in his Sandman comics, passed away in 2018. Hadley’s influence on goth fashion and culture cannot be overstated.
Tumblr media
“Death is the only major character whose visuals didn’t spring from me; that credit goes to Mike Dringenberg. In my original Sandman outline, I suggested Death look like rock star Nico in 1968, with the perfect cheekbones and perfect face she has on the cover of her Chelsea Girl album.
But Mike Dringenberg had his own ideas, so he sent me a drawing based on a woman he knew named Cinamon Hadley — the drawing that was later printed in Sandman 11 — and I looked at it and had the immediate reaction of, “Wow. That’s really cool.” Later that day, Dave McKean and I went to dinner in Chelsea at the My Old Dutch Pancake House and the waitress who served us was a kind of vision. She was American, had long black hair, was dressed entirely in black — black jeans, T-shirt, etc. — and wore a big silver ankh on a silver necklace. And she looked exactly like Mike Dringenberg’s drawing of Death.” - Neil Gaiman
In an interview originally published in part in her book Some Wear Leather, Some Wear Lace: The Worldwide Compendium of Postpunk and Goth in the 1980s, Andi Harriman interviewed Cinamon on what her style inspirations were, and on how Mike Dringenberg utilized her for his design of Death:
Tumblr media
When did you first enter the scene? What attracted you to it?
“I was a ballerina and grew up on the stage. What attracted me to the deathrock scene was, it was like theatre – make-up, costumes... oh and dancing! You could be so creative with hair, makeup and clothes. And I’m a very creative individual. I designed and made most of my clothes-not only was I poor, but I had specific ideas of what I wanted to wear. I didn’t enter the scene until late ’87. I was 18. I dyed my hair black, bought black liquid eye liner, and bought my first pack of cigarettes-camel lights hard pack. Lol. I heard about a dance club in Salt Lake called the Palladium. I put my ballet stage make-up on, my little black outfit and teased my hair as big as I could get it and went to the club. I was in awe. I felt so at home, everyone was nice to me and I thought everyone was so “cool”. I decided this was the world I wanted to be in. I copied Patricia Morrison’s hair from Sisters of Mercy!”
Tumblr media
Who inspired your look? Was there a specific person?
“I wasn’t really influenced by any specific person-except my big hair-it was more; I saw people in lots of black and lots of eyeliner. I would just start out with my Maybeline liquid eye liner and just start drawing. I often didn’t know what I was going to do. I really like the Egyptian makeup, I guess actually I was influenced by King Tutankhamen -a photo used in the comic has this makeup. But, there really isn’t anything original- someone somewhere has done it or thought about doing it. I thought I was so creative, drawing a big spiderweb on my face and gluing a little plastic spider in the center—yeah-well, it had already been done. Now for the infamous swirl under Death’s eye. That was a result of one of my little drawing sessions on my face. Now I see it everywhere. It’s kind of neat.”
Tumblr media
How did you get involved with Neil Gaiman?
“Mike Dringenberg, the original artist for the Sandman, was a good friend of mine. He asked me one day if he could use me as a character for a comic book. I said sure. I didn’t know anything about comics and I didn’t know it was even anything special. I certainly had no idea it would be what it is now. Funny story... About three years after Mike asked me if he could use my likeness, I was living in Houston, having moved from Salt Lake City, and I was at a friend’s house. My friend told me his favorite comic was the Sandman and showed me an issue. When I opened it I saw a picture of myself staring back at me. (It was one of the 2 photographs actually used and just inked over). I said ”oh my God, that’s me!” I had no idea I was in the Sandman, and I had even forgotten about being asked by Mike to use me as the model.”

De Algemene Verwarring #112 - 13 May 2024
Episode one hundred and twelve of De Algemene Verwarring was broadcast on Monday, May 13, 2024, and you can listen to it by clicking on the link below that will take you directly to the Mixcloud page:
Pictured below is Big Black, of course. In general, I don't like having to put pictures here of musicians who have died, and especially not when they are heroes who helped define my musical tastes. Steve Albini was one of those guys. I was introduced to Big Black in the eighties when I was listening to the legendary radio show Domino, presented by Luc Janssen. It was an immediate match. My first visit to Pukkelpop was one year too late to see Big Black Live (they played the festival in 1987, my first visit was in 1988), but later when I saw Shellac for the first time at De Effenaar in Eindhoven I was pretty much blown away. Seen Shellac several times throughout the years, I was also at the All Tomorrows Parties festival curated by the band (here they played every day as first band) - legendary times. And of course all the records that Albini engineered. Contrary to what rumor says, they weren't all good, but still, a lot of them were pretty good and there's of course some all time classics. Steve Albini died at the age of 61 which is just so unfair. People just shouldn't die like that, all of a sudden. A huge blow for all of us underground music lovers, but even more for his family, friends and bandmates. There's a new Shellac album out right now. They made six albums in thirty years.
We've got other music in this episode from Karp, Lowercase, Sonic Youth, Vaag, Your Funeral, Unit 4, Isolation Ward, PIL, UV Pop, HTRK, Jon Collin and more! And beneath the photo you can find the playlist for the show. Enjoy!

Part 2
44)Infernarium- Kadotuksen Harmonia
-Ah, sweet, wonderful, nuclear Finnish black metal. Finnish black metal is on fire these days, and bands like this are why.
43)Sargeras- Satan's Terror
- "Welcome to Life, Cunt!" How can you not love these guys? Raw, unapologetic, borderline ridiculous, so awesome black metal.
42) Vargrav- Netherstorm
-Awesome symphonic black metal that worships the sound of old while still charting new territory.
41)Wiegedood- De Doden Hebben Het Goed III
- These guys have yet to release a bad album, and it was so exciting to get to see them. They're good, and I hope they get more recognition for it.
40)Keegan Ostrowski- Ilusen's Fallacy
- Some of the finest progressive death metal you will find, with stellar musicianship all around, and the precision and cohesion is glorious to witness. Let yourself drown in it.
39) The Damned- Evil Spirits
-Much like Judas Priest, here's another band still showing the youngsters how it's done. This album is just pure punk rock fun, and that's how it should be.
38) Hinayana- Order Divine
- These Texas melodic death metallers are definitely going to get bigger. A superb album, and they put on a superb live show too.
37)Solar Temple- Fertile Descent
- Fuzzy ambient black metal isn't always my thing, but this band is great, and they will absolutely bring the riffs.
36)VOID- Jettatura
- This French black n roll band will pummel you with riffs and rage and rythym.
35)Morgal- Morgal
- Even more rifftastic black metal, these fellows are a blast.
34)Kommandant- Blood Eel
- This is already awesome black metal, but the drumming, like all their releases, just pushes it to the next level for me.
33)UADA- Cult of a Dying Sun
-Their sound makes me calm, and tends to make me feel happy. Perhaps its having seen them three times in the span of a year, and each show was an enjoyable time, so maybe I'm just invoking nostalgia when I listen to them. In any case, they're a great band, this is a great album, and you should see them live three times in one year too.
32)Funeral Winds- Sinister Creed
- Raw, almost grimey, awesome black metal that grinds away your soul.
31)Blitzgeist- Ritual Magic
- I chose just one of the three releases from this year, this one is probably my favorite. The title suites the ritualistic, dirge-esque black metal wonderfully.
30)Deth Crux- Mutant Flesh
- This is fantastic Deathrock that evokes everything from Christian Death to more traditional goth rock like Bauhaus, and it pleases me so much.
29)OVÁTE- Ováte
- Again, Norway's still churning out awesome black metal, and this new project is promising.
28) Horror Vacui- New Wave of Fear
- More Deathrock- I really, really enjoy these guys. For me, they have just the perfect blend of goth and punk, and it's so catchy.
27)Panegyrist- Hierurgy
- I keep calling them a black metal Therion, and that's a big deal for me. This year I learned I really like my black metal avant-garde, and this band delivers.
26)BEHEMOTH!- I Loved You at Your Darkest
- While not on par with The Satanist for me, this follow up is still quite good. They've really mastered the creation of atmosphere, and I love it. Songs like "Bartzabel" really appeal to that taste for the avant-garde I mentioned.
25)Funker Vogt- Wasteland
- This is awesome. An absolute testament to why they're one of my favorite industrial bands. Perfect blend of rythym, harshness, and an ability to mellow out at just the right times.
24)Norrhem- Vaienneet Voittajat
- Its the riffs. I don't know what else to say, really. Just, RIFFS.
23)Plaguestorm- Eternal Throne
- High speed, zero fucks raw black metal with excellent guitar solos. Honestly I'm really happy to have such soaring solos in such fantastic black metal. It just makes it that much better.
22)Slavehouse- Taste in Pain
- Speaking of high speed, zero fucks raw black metal, but this one comes with some lovely punk tinges that pushes it just a little higher for me.
21)Blood Worship- Death's Omnipotence
-Do you like Swedish black metal? Yes? Then this band is for you. They specialize in melodic, catchy riffing in the vein of Watain, and they do it well.

9, 12, and/or 41?
EEE okay!! 9. Do you have a favorite band? DIFFICULT question for me. for many years of my life AJJ was my favorite band, full stop, no competition, then for a while it was Home is Where, and nowww I think it's a pretty even tie between Blitzkid and Bauhaus. Blitzkid is like super fun cheesy horror punk (though its more of a rock band than a punk band) and Bauhaus is just like. classic, crystalline Gothic Rock its so good.
12. Who’s the most obscure artist you listen to? another difficult question because this isn't really something i really pay attention to, and it's also really hard to quantify? a lot of the relatively unknown artists i listen to are still pretty popular in their niche, yknow? I guess i could say Tassel which is like. fantastic dark wave/deathrocker. real new wave goth shit it’s fun
41. Have you ever been to a music festival? If not, would you like to go? Never a festival but i’ve been to a couple concerts/shows! Notable ones are seeing Slipknot in 2018 or 2019? I don’t remember. and seeing AJJ back in feb 2020 </3 i wish i could go to shows again

Lecture-WHAT INFLUENCES TREND
Tumblr media
A lot of things could influence the trend. But these 5 factors may be the most important.
1.celebrity power
2.subculture
3.style tribes
4.social media
5.global issues
Subcultures usually refer to all kinds of non-mainstream, non-universal, and non-popular cultures, which are embodied in specific cultural forms, contents and values of specific ages, specific groups of people, specific occupations, specific identities, specific life circles and living conditions.
Subculture exists objectively, and it reflects the cultural self-identity of some "marginal" or "lonely" people who have not or temporarily not entered the mainstream social system and have been recognized by the mainstream culture.
In order to do some in-depth study about subculture, we had a group discussion about the PUNK.
Subculture is an important part of culture, and the dissemination of subculture is conducive to stimulating the sense of innovation. Take punk as an example, it has developed many aspects of content, such as music and art. Now we can see many punk elements in our daily lives.
Tumblr media
I do not know much about punk, I believe it just a kind of spiritualism, which could showed by some exaggerated makeup and hairstyle. Actually punk includes a diverse and widely known array of ideologies, fashion, and other forms of expression, visual art, dance, literature and film.
Reference: Wikipedia
Punk emerged in the mid-1970s, early it adapted everyday objects for aesthetic effect. With the development of diverse subcultures, the punk influence in fashion is also definitely toned down, but it still is a part of youth culture now. It’s not so much that it disappeared, it’s better to say that it has changed according to the times. Punk was originally a rebellion caused by a depressed social environment, but I think it more like a way to show egoism today.

Kurraka Otra Dimension (2017)
Unholy Mother Of Fuck, is it too early to start posting Halloween entries? As mentioned earler, we were really digging Adrenochrome’s Buzz Or Howl Sessions (2018) and traced back their descendants because we greedy fucks needed more. Austin’s Kurraka was first up with Otra Dimension, a striking cataclysmic event of black-crow deathrock, metal, and horror all equaling Latinx punk. What better way to start terror with "Amor Prohibido” that rocks the shit out of your day of pending reckoning? Kurraka continues to eat the young with “El Poder”, one of (lead singer) Dru Molina’s finer vocal moments with fast repetitive lyrical haunts, but isn’t that the case for the rest of the record? Otra Dimension‘s scare-fest ends mercilessly with “La Violencia Continua” and why wouldn’t it? Her fast and blunt-force shrieks bludgeons flesh and cause nerves to shrill up to nothing. That’s what Harpies do.
