He’s always caught off guard, no matter what. He tends to stutter and become extremely flustered, and red as well. Riddle’s so unused to the idea of being cared for, or having others do gestures for him in general, that it’s going to take a long time for him to get used to it. I think he’s going to linger in the “ I can’t believe this is really happening ” space for quite awhile.

I think a small, hopeful little part of him does, deep down inside. As a child, he would read Shakespeare or Tolstoy and dream about the love he lacked from his parents. I think the idea of someone somewhere out there being made for him, who would cherish him and give him that unconditional love he needed was probably a desperate fantasy that he clung to. That sort of thing is very appealing for kids like Riddle, especially given the fact that he was forcefully isolated in his room from the rest of the world. I think he spent many nights dreaming about what his future partner would be like…but as he grew older, the hope began to fade, and he became more and more disillusioned. His mother has conditioned him into maintaining the understanding that when the time comes, she will hand select a lady from a respectable family for the sake of marriage and continuing on the Rosehearts line. She’s also fully informed him that love is a childish notion, and should never be his focus because it will only hinder his success. As a result, he expects a loveless union, even though that small child yearning for affection still lives in his heart. But he knows that at his age, he has to be realistic.

Unfortunately, Riddle has a lot of difficulty when it comes to vulnerability, and almost as much when it comes to self love or self appreciation. It will take a painfully long time after he begins dating someone to even allow them to see him without a shirt on…so I think lacking makeup, styled hair, and finely ironed clothing won’t be something he’s comfortable with until deep into the relationship.

I don’t think he knows how to play any quite yet, since music falls under art, and as I mentioned previously, his mother isn’t the type to take the arts very seriously. That said, riddle adores the sound of instrumental music, and if he ever got the chance, I think he’d love learning something for himself. If I were to guess based on his style in other areas of life, I’d say that his instrument of choice would likely either be piano, or violin.

Omg,,, no,,, I’m crying gfdjhukghdrdtkr I can’t even take this seriously, Riddle would be a TERRIBLE driver. Mostly because he’d be overly cautious and go so slow it would be dangerous. He would hate the idea of controlling such a potentially destructive machine, because machines in general are so foreign to him. I definitely think he could eventually become average at driving…but never anything more than that, and being behind the wheel would always make him very anxious and alert.

He waits. Riddle struggles a lot with relationships in general, and he tends to wait for the other person to give out a label so that he can feel secure in calling things what they are. I definitely think he’d do the same in a romantic sense…he’d also probably realize his feelings later than the other person ( except in certain circumstances ), so there’s that.

🎁 = Does your muse become flattered to receive gifts? 

Definitely. I don’t think that Riddle has received many gifts at all throughout his life. Birthdays were celebrated in a very minimalist way with the “cake” his mother would prepare. He never had guests beyond her, and his family didn’t celebrate holidays in the traditional manner either. The only things he was ever given were new studying materials, and although he does enjoy studying, nothing was gifted to him with the driving force behind it that it would make him happy. So these days, whenever he receives something, he doesn't quite know how to react. Often, he gets quite flustered, or responds in a robotic manner, but no matter what, he treasures what he's given and does all he can to hide them from his mother, even if that means asking Trey to hold onto them for a time. Off the top of my head, some of his favorite gifts that he's received are Cater’s old phone ( since its the only explanation i can think of for him having one, his parents certainly wouldn’t have allowed it ), the aromatherapy lamp from Azul, the rose that Malleus pinned to his coat ( pressed, of course ), and a few others.

Nope! When he does eventually develop feelings for someone, they won’t hit him until the last possible second. He isn’t very in tune with his own emotions, and he’s definitely the type to label symptoms of a crush as symptoms of having fallen ill.

Ohhhh this is a good one! Yes and no. I think that Riddle doesn’t necessarily get jealous over possessions or people, or even attention or time, but rather things that come with the freedom that others may have that he does not, or things that can’t be given a physical value, if that makes sense? And his jealousy always circles back around to himself. It’s jealousy mixed with longing, I guess. Like as a child, it wasn’t ‘ that kid has a toy, I want that toy, I’m jealous ’ but rather ‘ that kid has a toy, what must it be like to be allowed to play, what is the experience of playing, I’m jealous that I’ve never known that. ' Or ‘ Trey’s mother smiles so kindly at him, and she always hugs him and tells him she loves him, I’m jealous. I wish my mother would do that for me. ' It’s always more about what he desires for himself than wanting to take from someone else. I also think that the more he ages, the less he feels the jealousy, because he’s replaced it with resignation. As a child, wishing was a possibility. Now that he’s almost at the stage of entering into higher education, he can’t make himself see the world like that anymore. There’s been a lot of disillusionment for him throughout his life, and it was reinforced during and after his Overblot.

I actually don’t quite know the answer to this one. Riddle was never given the chance to test out his talents in a real way. In a family of magical doctors, I can assume that the arts weren’t highly prioritized in his household. I can also assume from what we’ve seen of his mother and her parenting style, they might have been considered to be far more within the ‘ hobby ’ category than the educational one, and therefore a distraction not worth having. I think that once he became required to produce any sort of art pieces for school, he learned how to follow instructions perfectly and create something that would earn him a perfect score, but I don’t know how much feeling he’d be able to put behind it, and that would probably show through even if it was an otherwise more than clever, ideal piece. He’s only just now, at this age, discovering what his hobbies are…I don’t think any sort of traditional forms of art would be in the running. If I had to pick something that I think he’d have a chance of falling in love with, it might be flower arrangements! He’s very passionate about his garden.

Surprisingly, Riddle is rather good at makeup application! He learned from the best after all ( Vil ) and he’s nothing if not a fixated perfectionist. He’s extremely blessed in the skin department, so even despite all of the health issues he has going on and lack of sleep that should affect it, he doesn’t tend to have pimples or blemishes that need covering. What he does have, however, are dark circles under his eyes. It took a lot of trial and error with a mixture of concealer and color theory, but he has a routine down at this point and he’s able to cover them. He's also very good at making his eyes pop - eyeshadow blending, eyeliner, and mascara are the areas he's strongest in. Other than that, his routine is pretty simple - some sort of light lip color and that’s it. His face reddens incredibly easily, so blush is wholly unnecessary, and he doesn't feel the need to delve into things like highlighter and contour. He feels as though he has a good enough bone structure, and he's satisfied keeping things mostly natural. However for special occasions he might be seen donning a bit of foundation. 

🍳 — cooking

As we’ve seen in canon, Riddle is definitely not the best cook, even though he tries quite hard. That isn’t to say he's the worst, either, but he definitely has a long way to go. He also has an issue with substituting ingredients that don’t work at times. I think that after hearing Malleus’s critiques, he takes bettering his skills in this area more seriously than ever. He’s definitely been working on his abilities, and he's been getting Trey’s help in teaching him. I think he’d probably like to ask Jamil if he gets the chance as well, since Trey’s specialty is desserts, while Jamil does a little bit of everything. He probably wouldn’t ask any of the Octatrio even though they're talented in the area as well, though. He doesn’t want a potential learning experience being held over his head, or to be teased about it.

🔎 — investigating

This is something that Riddle is extremely good at. Although normal day-to-day social cues may fly over his head, he's surprisingly good at reading other people and seeing below the surface, so to speak. Because of that, he can act accordingly. I think that because of that, he's also able to pick apart anyone involved in a theoretical investigation. Aside from that, if you’ve met Riddle Rosehearts, then I’m sure you’re aware of his stubbornness in nature, and his obsessive compulsiveness when it comes to something he’s honed his focus in on. Once he gets involved with an issue, he won’t stop until he's solved it. That’s one of the traits he has that makes him very well suited to be a housewarden, as well as a part of the many planning committees that he's been on for organizing school festivals and such. For Riddle, things not going smoothly is not an option, and if something happens, he's relentless in chasing down the culprit.

🚴 — riding a bike

Riddle's never done this, and I don’t think he ever will. He’s a horseback riding type of guy. Learning to ride a bike at his age would feel redundant for him.

Despite his lack of ability to take care of himself and deny his mother…Riddle is surprisingly incredibly good at this. I always say that I think that his first bonds upon coming to NRC were made with animals. Coming from my sociology and social work background, there’s a HUGE amount of research out there supporting the bonds between traumatized/ab*sed kids and animals, and how in certain cases it might be easier for them to bond with animals than other humans. To me, that definitely makes sense when it comes to Riddle, who was largely isolated from other people for so many years and therefore has very little idea of how to act around them the first time he’s reintroduced to any sort of wider society.

Let me start by speaking on his relationship with Vorpal, because that’s one that I think I mention fairly often on this blog. I haven’t yet come up with a how, but upon coming to NRC, Riddle very suddenly found himself invested in equestrianship. At the place he's in currently, riding gives him a sense of freedom he doesn’t get anywhere else: he’s able to let go of everything holding him down in his life and hold onto Vorpal instead, working in tandem with this animal who he shares so much love with. For me ( and this is where the hcs become very personalized to my blog ), I really like to picture Vorpal as one of those out of control horses, labeled as dangerous to riders and extremely aggressive. The school keeps him because they have the stable space, but he isn’t used for riding…until Riddle. the idea of Vorpal having some behavioral issues due to unknown past trauma taking to Riddle who experiences the same thing is so wonderful to me, as is the idea that he would choose Riddle to be his.

I think no matter how that first interaction happened, Vorpal’s obvious interest and favoritism would continue luring Riddle back to visit him, two creatures overly wary of the world around them becoming closer and closer. As a result of all their time together, Vorpal would become his very first friend at the school ( since I imagine it would take awhile for him to readjust to being around Trey and vice versa, but that’s a post for another day ). He's very protective of him as a result, and only brings those that he cares for and respects deeply around his horse. He's also very in tune with Vorpal’s emotions, and most of the time he can guess when a person ( rare as it might be ) would be accepted by him, because Riddle’s own approval is somewhat of a difficult thing to attain depending on the person. I think that Riddle genuinely loves his horse, and so far he's convinced his mother that riding and dressage are worthwhile, classy ( non nouveau rich ) activities to continue improving at, and has her momentary approval. It would break his heart, were Vorpal to be ever taken from him. I’m not quite sure what he would do.

All I know is he loves that horse, and even beyond club hours, he often spends his time studying in the stables or propped up against him in the field. Vorpal's coat, of course, is always clean and immaculately groomed, and his hooves are always in prime condition. Riddle keeps his mane and tail soft and without tangles, and his gear always adjusted comfortably. In fact, Riddle gets almost neurotic in his pursuit of caring for Vorpal, but it gives him purpose, which is a good thing. 

it’d be a crime not to mention his relationship with the flamingos and hedgehogs as well! Even in canon material, we see how seriously he takes caring for his hedgehogs. I think even beyond just generally connecting with animals easier than with other people, caring for them gives him purpose because he knows that he’s needed in such a fundamental way. He’s also extraordinary at growing different varieties of flowers amongst other types of gardening, and he has a passion for it. 

Beyond that, in regards to other people…I think he could be good at it, given the right time and scenario. He needs to learn to be less overbearing, and I think he’s already learning that the way he used to enforce his rules and regulations whilst perceiving it as his version of love, or the way he could look after the students under his charge properly. He definitely cares a lot, and he has a lot of big feelings. He just needs to grow a little more, whether through learning or watching, I can’t say.

I don’t think so. Astrology signs seem much more like something Cater would shove in Riddle’s face during breakfast than something Riddle would look at on his own. I think he could find the concept intriguing, but ultimately that’s where it would end. It definitely wouldn’t be a factor for him when it comes to romance.
