ah. well. medical record in case I need it below the cut, arin’s having a rough night.
arin got a booster shot of the covid vaccine today (10:45am, pfizer same as previous set), it’s not actually recommended for the general public yet only the immunocompromised who may have had an inadequate response to the regular dosage. but she got vaccinated really early on and between that and the delta variant she decided to take matters into her own hands. I don’t know if she consulted with anyone else beforehand but it was something she put forethought into and like, scheduled and stuff.
she started feeling a little malaise by the time she got home from picking up my prescriptions (~3:30pm?), but puttered around for much of the evening just complaining about being achy and tired. 2x tylenol shortly after she got home, and again around 9:15pm. (ETA: she also reported a sore throat at some point during the evening although it was mild.)
suddenly beset by severe trembling and chills (shivering and hissing like an alaskan survival movie standing in our 74 degree kitchen) around 11:30pm? temp seemed okay but our thermometer is a little busted and generally returns both of us at 97.9 (which is where she was at).
went to bed very shortly after, wrapped in all her blankets and with her heated blanket on low. window closed, fan on but on the floor so it could theoretically blow on me but not her.
texted me at midnight to say she was still struggling and ask me to fetch an ambien. grabbed that, checked in with her, starting to feel a little nauseous too. the bag with her zofran was still in the car so I went down to get it. also brought her the pulse ox, 100% spo2 and 72 bpm (probably around 12:15am at this point?). I don’t know what to listen for to check her blood pressure. I suggested I call the nurse line and had to dick around with google searches for some godforsaken reason. got through to the school nurse line, wait time was several hours so I gave up and reported back.
as of ~12:40am, nausea feels under control, still cold but not panting and shivering like I left her outside in the middle of winter. “less bad”. I’m checking on her again at 1am by which time she expects the ambien to have kicked in better, she can have more tylenol as early as 1:15 and she probably should just in case. (1-2 every 4-6)
I also have permission to sleep in the living room so I’m not twitchy all night.
I hate emergencies. I’m very good at them and I hate them.
1am update: took tylenol, felt ready to stop check-ins and go to sleep but needed to go to the bathroom. harsh breathing like she was cold the second she left the covers even with her robe, but not as severe as before, and warmed up much faster once back in bed. only symptoms passive leg ache (bilateral), the chill, reactive pain in the injection site, and mild neck pain (probably due to bracing for the reactive pain). checked pulse ox again at around 1:20am, 100% spo2 but 100bpm so I’ll check again at 2am. also drank 1 nuun vitamin tablet water, since she reported being very thirsty. may just be hypovolemic as a consequence of the vaccine as even abled folks are recommended to drink some electrolytes beforehand and she Didn’t. better safe than sorry though.
2am update: 118-129bpm, 99-97% spo2. slightly less aching in the legs. makes me a little nervous, checking again at 2:30am.
2:30am update: bpm in the high 1-teens, spo2 still 97%. a little cold getting up, and reports that breathing more feels better, but turned off the heated blanket. also asked for the stethoscope for funsies, mitral stenosis without friction. arm hurts less. generally doing better. able to email supervisors, also just chat with me a bit about things other than immediate care needs. still thirsty but less severe. no further checkins required barring text alert.
