Otomate Party 2017 Collar x Malice Drama Translations

My first content post of the month... at 5:22 am for some ungodly reason i guess.... but I’ll start by asking you to please support me if you can either on ko-fi (https://ko-fi.com/V7V2W0HO) or through paypal (paypal.me/KumoriYami )…. also let me know if you have any hakuoki drama cds that you’d be willing to share that are on my looking for list since i don’t have the audio for those…..

Anyway I finally managed to finish this. Seriously wish i had translations for this as text instead of off a video since snipping everything than converting the pics of the subtitles into text is a serious pain in the ass.... As this is the first and only thing that I have translated for the cxm fandom, I will state:

I do not speak Japanese so this was translated from Chinese based on my bad Chinese and various mtl help (my limit on Japanese is the tiny bits picked up from anime... which I haven’t watched since 2009)

“[” and “]” are what I normally use for translator/personal notes/ways I think the text sounds better

normal brackets and italics are usually used for alternate text suggestions based on the translated words themselves without extra words added or scene transition notes

My Chinese, in my opinion, is not particularly good when it comes to reading so there will probably be mistakes or things lost in translation (especially since this relied on finding someone else’s work of them translating this from Japanese into Chinese)

I will edit this later so expect grammar mistakes (I left quite a lot of those since I didn’t get punctuation for +75% of this) or things being left weirdly phrased.

I have taken images from the drama itself and put them into this post so that this makes more sense.

Enomoto: It's awful! Something's wrong!

Sasazuka: Shut up

Yanagi: Enomoto, open the door quietly.

Enamoto: Ah, sorry..... No, this is a big deal Yanagi-senpai!

Sasazuka: Yanagai-san. Yanagi: Nn?

Sasazuka: Today's cookies aren't bad.

Yanagi: Okay/Yeah, having Sasazuka's approval sets me a ease. Can also give these to Hoshino---- [These can also be given to Hoshino---]

Enomoto: Please don't ignore me!

Enomoto: Anyway, Shiraishi-san he....!

Shiraishi: Miao~

Enomoto: (He's) become/turned into a cat!

Yanagi: Ha... Shiraishi, stop messing around with Enomoto.

[I don't know Japanese but the subtitles left those bits in Japanese... so I just copied them over into the TL here. Also, according to Hermy The Wormy or nancy cheerleader #6 on the Otogetranslations' japanese-qa discord, the first kanji of Enomoto's name can be read as enoki, and enoki dake are a type of mushroom. ]

Enomoto: Hey, are you messing around with me again!?

Sasazuka: Today this brainless idiot is the same as usual.

Shiraishi: But/However, this type of person is unable to act [like a/n] food/idiot. /these type of people are not//cannot be fools by accident. [be stupid by accident]

Shiraishi: Also you two.... the [your] investigation(s) have stalled right?

Yanagi: What happened/What's going on for you to unexpectedly say/ask this? [literally: What happened, suddenly/unexpectedly, you do you want to say?]

Shiraishi: It's necessary to take a break from time to time. Shiraishi: When faced with a puzzle, fixed concepts/ideas/views/impressions can be the greatest enemy.

Sazazuka: Not really, even if this is just an impression image, this sort of thing is common.

Yanagi: Shiraishi.... You've really [even] made an image impression specifically for this sort of thing.

Shiraishi: It's funny [audio sounds like *interesting*]isn't it? The pictures were made by someone I know [These] question and answers were something that I had good reference for since it nicely matched a document/literature's contents.

Sasazuka: To begin with, what literature/study was this from? Was there ever a study/book written/published on this?

Shiraishi: It was the book "Romantic ☆ Psychology Evaluations" [Emotional affecting/heartbeat/heart rate/heart throbbing? ☆ psychology tests..... probably leave it at the first interpretation unless i come up with a better sounding title name here]

Enomoto: Ah! The new book I bought yesterday! I haven't read it yet!

Yanagi: mah.... I think it's the same [one]./I think the same way.

Sasazuka: [I'm] Tired, I really have to go.

Shiraishi: Yeah, I should also be heading back to the station.

(screen changes to outside the detective agency with Shiraishi)

Shiraishi: Nn? You, the collar's/collared.... Ah right, right,/yes, yes, hoshino-san

Yanagi-kun and the others seemed to be heading back.

Eh.... or did you go to a crime scene/still going to see a crime scene?

Well, after doing this..... I can say that I don’t have any intention to translate anything else in the fandom that relies on a video cuz as it is truly excruciating to snip all the subtitles off the vid, photoshop said clips and either whiten or blacken the background so that an image to text converter can read it, have the image converted to text, add in all the words and correct whatever wasn’t converted into text properly, and then get to actually translating whatever it is (i’ve also hand-written more than +4000 Chinese characters from coping subtitles from a different video so i’m not going to be doing that ever again either).....Which means I will probably not be looking at whatever the 2018 cxm secret mission thing is as I have only found Chinese tl for that on a video from bilibili.... plus I’m not certain if there’s an actual drama in it (I have no interest in translating non-drama/story stuff).

Anyway, as I’m not particularly confident in my translation for this - at least when compared to the other stuff that I’ve done, I’m not entirely sure if I’m going to do a subbed video for this since I don’t want to post anything without a personal confidence level of at least 85% in any translation I do for a video (my level for this is probably somewhere between 60-70%).... and on another note, I realllllly need a better way to phrase “impression image,” since that looks and sounds really weird..... also if anyone wants to help me with my lack of language skills for this drama, send me a message plzzz! >_<

if i ever do get to making a video, final edits will be done then since i know i left this drama tl not exactly worded well...

Standing, Alec shrugs into his coat. It’s in the single digits and as he pulls his gloves on, Alec’s gaze snags on the picture on the corner of his desk.

He reaches out, only one glove on, and brings it up to him, studying it.

What a difference a year makes.

In the frame is a picture of him with Magnus. It’d been taken just a couple of months ago when they’d gone on vacation to the Dominican Republic. It’s a selfie Magnus had taken and he’d surprised Alec, turning at the last minute to kiss his cheek as he hit the shutter button.

It’s one of Alec’s favorite photos of the two of them and whenever Alec is stressed or work seems impossible, he can come back to his office and spend a few minutes calming down as he looks at his boyfriend.

With a sigh, Alec sets the picture back down and finally puts his other glove on. He debates for a minute but ultimately shakes his head, leaving his briefcase next to his desk.

He refuses to take his work home with him. This upcoming week is just for Magnus and Alec won’t ruin it preoccupied with patient files and the latest paper he needs to submit to the New England Journal of Medicine.

Shutting the lights off, Alec is just locking up when he hears a voice behind him.

“What’s this,” Catarina asks, shocked. “Don’t tell me you’re leaving at a reasonable hour.”

Turning to face her, Alec just pockets his keys and grins. “It’s 4:59 on Christmas Eve. I promised Magnus I would be home by 5:30.”

“Whoever thought we’d see the day,” Cat marvels. “Dr. Lightwood not only leaving for vacation but cutting out early. I’m impressed.”

“It’s only a minute,” Alec says, rolling his eyes.

Catarina laughs before her face turns serious. “I’m happy for you, Alec. It’s nice to see that you’re not chained to the hospital anymore. I was starting to lose hope,” she ends dryly.

“Well, it helps that I’m not in the ER anymore. I’m able to keep much better hours since I accepted the lead pediatric consultant position.”

“Yeah,” Cat sighs. “You got away from the daily insanity of the Emergency Room.” She considers him. “Do you ever miss it?”

“Sometimes,” Alec admits. “But not as much as I thought I would. I love working with kids more and Magnus is happy that I’m not working thirty hour shifts anymore.”

He shrugs. “It’s a win-win.”

Laughing, Cat shoos him out of the corridor. “Well, don’t let me keep you from Magnus. I hope you have a great week away from here.”

“I will,” Alec says with a firm nod and turns on his heel to leave.

The commute home isn’t bad at all. He'd moved into Magnus’s loft and it was close to the bakery and the hospital. Fifteen minutes later, he’s putting his key in the door, swinging it open to see a sight that’s more home than the building around them.

Magnus is in the living room. He has a record on, something smooth and slow, and he’s pouring a glass of wine, hips swaying lazily to the beat.

Taking a drink, he looks up as Alec toes off his shoes and starts unbundling from the cold outside.

“Alexander,” he exclaims. He looks down at his watch. “I wasn’t expecting you for another hour at least.”

“I told you that I would be home by 5:30 and it’s--” he takes a quick glance at the wall clock behind Magnus. “5:22.”

Waving that away, Magnus reaches for another glass, pouring a generous amount of Merlot. With both glasses in hand, he starts walking toward Alec.

“Sometimes you get distracted from work. Especially since you have the next ten days off,” he says, equal amounts of surprise and delight in his tone. “I thought you would work until the janitors told you to leave tonight.”

Accepting the glass Magnus holds out to him, Alec says, “It’s Christmas Eve. There was no way I was gonna miss it. Not when I have you to come home to,” he says softly, smile gracing his mouth.

Magnus’s own lips turn up as he reaches out with his free hand, smoothing down the lapel of Alec’s suit jacket. “Aren’t you the charmer tonight,” he murmurs. “Are you after something, Dr. Lightwood,” Magnus asks, teasing lilt in his tone.

Laughing, Alec wraps his hand around Magnus’s waist, bringing him closer. “And if I am,” he asks with a raised brow.

Curling a hand in Alec’s hair, Magnus replies, “Then you should know I’m pretty much a sure thing for you. Though compliments will get you everywhere, darling.”

Magnus grins before leaning into Alec further and lays a kiss on him that’s warm and familiar but irresistible all the same.

When Magnus pulls back a few minutes later, he opens his eyes to see that Alec’s are still closed. His boyfriend looks warm and happy and it’s Magnus’s favorite look on him.

He’s really just a giant puppy, Magnus thinks, and gives him one last peck on the lips before taking a step back and pulling Alec with him to the couch.

Alec goes willingly and as they settle on one end, Magnus relaxes into him as Alec throws an arm over his shoulder, pulling him closer.

The loft is decorated for Christmas and has been since the day after Thanksgiving. Christmas was their favorite holiday and they’d made a special effort for their first one together.

The tree is trimmed, looking bright and chaotic, and there are string lights around the balcony railing. There’s a dozen festive touches around the apartment and Magnus couldn’t remember the last time he’d had so much fun decorating.

The two of them spend awhile on the couch, talking about their days and anything else that comes to mind in between stretches of quiet that’s as content as it is affirming.

Magnus never gets used to it. He can’t believe that he just met Alec a year ago. It seems both like so much longer and a blink of an eye. Alec comes over to the bakery a few times a week and Magnus has surprised him a time or two at the hospital. Even the shitty cafeteria food wasn’t as bad as long as he could spend an hour with his boyfriend.

Well. Magnus smiles to himself as he turns his head up, kissing Alec’s jaw. He hasn’t said anything-- of course not-- but Magnus thinks of the little black box he’d stumbled across when cleaning their bedroom a few days ago and it takes everything he has not throw his arms around Alec and never let go.

He'd known his answer the moment he realized what he'd found.

He doesn’t want to ruin Alec’s fun, though, so Magnus just listens as Alec talks about the patient he’d had this morning, a boy who’d broken his leg while sled riding. He makes appropriate noises to show that he’s listening but all the while, he’s thinking of the past year and how much his life had changed.

Looking back, he was definitely in a rut. He’d had his bakery and his friends but there had been something missing. Then Alec had walked through his door one December afternoon and everything had turned just a little brighter.

Magnus still feels like that a year later and distantly he hopes that he never loses that sense of wonder when he thinks of the man beside him.

It takes Magnus a minute but he realizes that Alec’s stopped talking. He zones back in only to see Alec looking at him with a bemused expression.

“What’s going on?”

Clearing his throat, Magnus takes a sip of wine before smiling up at Alec. “Nothing, darling. I was just thinking about my opening next month.”

Humming, Alec kisses the top of his head. “Are you all ready for it?”

“I am,” Magnus confirms. “You know me though, always running through contingency plans.”

"Brooklyn won't know what hit it," Alec says easily. "You picked the perfect spot for the second location of Bane's Bakery."

"Thank you, darling. I'm excited to get to work and finally open in a few weeks."

Alec makes a noise of agreement while taking a drink from his own glass. Magnus silently breathes out a sigh of relief that he’d averted that potential disaster and the two of them continue with their evening.

The lights are low-- all the better for their Christmas tree to glow merrily-- and the fire’s died down a little when Alec abruptly stands, reaching a hand out for Magnus to take.

Resting his hand in Alec’s outstretched one, Magnus doesn’t move from the couch quite yet. He raises a brow in silent question.

Grinning, Alec tugs on his arm a little. “It’s Christmas Eve,” he says gravely. “You know what that means.”

Magnus thinks for a minute before giving Alec an incredulous glance. “Darling, I don’t know how to break this to you but we don’t have to go to bed early so Santa doesn’t pass our apartment--”

Magnus breaks off as Alec laughs bounces off the walls.

“We have to make cookies for him, don’t we?’

Alec’s looking at him with guileless eyes and Magnus sighs a little to himself as he gets up, though he he can’t resist his boyfriend’s enthusiasm.

Magnus wonders whether the cookies will be burnt or not done enough and decides that he doesn’t care. Alec might be an unmitigated disaster in the kitchen but the next few hours promise to be fun, if nothing else.

Magnus is disgusted later in the evening when the sugar cookies manage to be both burnt at the edges and gooey in the middle, the decorations making the cookies look even uglier, if that was even possible.

But Alec seems content enough and Magnus loves him, so he lets him have his delusions as Alec eats a cookie like they’re the best things he’s ever tasted.

Magnus doesn’t have the courage to ask if Alec prefers his own sugar cookies or the bakery’s.

They order late night takeout and eat it in the living room, glasses of wine at their elbows and a fire roaring in front of them.

Magnus wakes up Christmas morning with Alec wrapped around him like a particularly stubborn octopus and relaxes into their bed, his heart fit to bursting.

He wonders if a heart is supposed to be this happy, this overwhelmingly content. They go over to Maryse’s for Christmas brunch and spend the afternoon at home.

Later that night, Magnus is surprised as Alec abruptly stands from the couch and takes his hand, leading him out of the living room. He pauses in the middle of the hallway and looks up pointedly.

Magnus looks up, too, and almost laughs at the newly hung mistletoe before he looks back at Alec and his heart goes to his throat. He starts grinning even as the first tear spills down his cheek.

Because Alec’s in front of him on one knee, little black box open to reveal a stunning ring.

An Interview with Mark Ellis

I recently had the pleasure of conducting my first theatre interview with actor Mark Ellis who will be performing in Nortesur Productions David Mamet powerhouse Glengarry Glen Ross opening in December at The Pearl Company in Hamilton, Ontario.

Glengarry Glen Ross is a play by David Mamet that won the Pulitzer Prize in 1984. The play shows parts of two days in the lives of four desperate Chicago real estate agents who are prepared to engage in any number of unethical, illegal acts—from lies and flattery to bribery, threats, intimidation and burglary—to sell undesirable real estate to unwitting prospective buyers.

How is this production bringing something new to this story?

Mark: Mamet wrote Glengarry for an all-male cast, but in our production the role of office manager Williamson is played by Kayla Gambrill. The play pivots around the power Williamson wields over the four real-estate salesman. Only she can dole out the ‘hot leads’ that they’re all so desperate to get. They resent her for that, and because they see her as a ‘company man’ who doesn’t understand what it is to work the streets and sell. The story is set in 1983 and putting a woman in that role adds a rich layer to the play. What’s it like for a woman to occupy a position of prominence in that kind of ruthless workspace? Mamet’s words take on a whole new meaning when the salesmen tell Williamson ‘You don’t belong in this business,’ ‘You’re a secretary.’ ‘You have no idea of your f^%ing job.’ The level of verbal abuse she faces makes us see the play in an entirely new light.

What’s challenging about bringing this script to life?

Mark: This is a play that needs a lot of rehearsal. There are so many unfinished thoughts, interruptions and overlaps in Mamet’s beautifully naturalistic dialogue. In a way, it’s like rehearsing a symphony. Each instrument has to come in precisely on cue or the music falls apart.

Why is this story one that is still being told today? What makes it relevant to today’s audiences?

Mark: Glengarry’s themes are more relevant than ever. What happens when people act purely out of self-interest? How far will they go to manipulate and steam-roll over others to get what they want? That’s a practice that still exists in business today. And particularly dominates our politics. I’d love to see Mamet update this play, swapping the ‘Misters’ for ‘Senators’

What’s the biggest challenge about taking on your role as an actor in this production?

Mark: Mamet’s lines are famously difficult to memorize, because they are so precise. It’s been essential for me to decode Shelly Levene’s internal thoughts as I learn the words he actually says. Mamet once famously said that actors should just “stand and read the lines.” I don’t agree. A composer needs a skilled musician to unlock the code of his score. Bach needs his Yo Yo Ma. Mamet’s brilliant writing also requires unlocking, and it’s no easy task.

How do you identify with your character and/or how do you disassociate from your character after rehearsal or performances?

Mark: I’m a terrible salesman. And I don’t think Levene is very good either. He’s not as articulate as Ricky Roma, not as assured. He speaks longer than he should. Crimes I’m all guilty of. Many of us artists live in fear that we’re not as good as we think we are. That one day we’ll be exposed for for being some kind of fraud. Shelley faces that day of reckoning and playing that fall is heart-breaking and disturbing.

What will local audiences be thinking about after leaving the production?

Mark: I think our audience will leave slightly out of breath. The play rockets along. It’s dark, it’s caustic, it’s funny, it’s heartbreaking. They don’t give out Pulitzer's lightly and this is one of the best plays there ever was.

Mark was the co-creator and executive producer of Flashpoint (CTV/CBS). He and his partner Stephanie Morgenstern were designated 2013 Showrunners of the Year by the Writers Guild of Canada. Their writing received multiple awards as well as the Academy Board of Directors Tribute for Outstanding and Enduring Contribution to Canadian Television, the 2013 Canadian Screen Award and 2009 Gemini for Best Dramatic Series, and earned them the Sea to Sky Innovative Producers Award at the Banff World Media Festival.

Flashpoint is licensed in more than 100 territories and translated into 22 languages.

Their second series, X Company (CBC), also aired around the world. A World War II spy drama, X Company is set in Europe and Canada and filmed in Budapest. The show has also been recognized with WGC and Canadian Screen award nominations including a best series nod.

As an actor, Mark has performed at theatres across the country. Favourite productions include: Gross Indecency: The Three Trails of Oscar Wilde (Canadian Stage), Anton Piatagorsky’s The Offering (Artword Toronto),Two Pianos Four Hands (Sudbury Theatre Centre), The Sicilian (Persephone Theatre) and Modern Times’ production of Macbeth in Iran.

British Airways boss apologises for 'malicious' data breach

British Airways's boss has apologised for what he says was a sophisticated breach of the firm's security systems, and has promised compensation.

Alex Cruz told the BBC that hackers carried out a "sophisticated, malicious criminal attack" on its website.

The airline said personal and financial details of customers making or changing bookings had been compromised.

About 380,000 transactions were affected, but the stolen data did not include travel or passport details.

"We are 100% committed to compensate them, period," Mr Cruz told the BBC's Today programme.

"We are committed to working with any customer who may have been financially affected by this attack, and we will compensate them for any financial hardship that they may have suffered."

BA said the breach took place between 22:58 BST on 21 August and 21:45 BST on 5 September. Shares in BA parent group IAG closed 1.4% lower on Friday.

Mr Cruz also told the Today programme: "We're extremely sorry. I know that it is causing concern to some of our customers, particularly those customers that made transactions over BA.com and app.

"We discovered that something had happened but we didn't know what it was [on Wednesday evening]. So overnight, teams were trying to figure out the extent of the attack.

"The first thing was to find out if it was something serious and who it affected or not. The moment that actual customer data had been compromised, that's when we began immediate communication to our customers."

BA said all customers affected by the breach had been contacted on Thursday night. The breach only affects people who bought tickets during the timeframe provided by BA, and not on other occasions.

Mr Cruz added: "At the moment, our number one purpose is contacting those customers that made those transactions to make sure they contact their credit card bank providers so they can follow their instructions on how to manage that breach of data."

The airline has taken out adverts apologising for the breach in Friday's newspapers.

What data was stolen?

"It was name, email address, credit card information - that would be credit card number, expiration date and the three digit [CVV] code on the back of the credit card," said BA boss Mr Cruz.

BA insists it did not store the CVV numbers. This is prohibited under international standards set out by the PCI Security Standards Council.

Since BA said the attackers also managed to obtain CVV numbers, security researchers have speculated that the card details were intercepted, rather than harvested from a BA database.

It isn't totally clear how hackers boarded BA's website and app - but cyber-security experts have some suggestions.

Once fraudsters have your personal information, they may be able to access your bank account, or open new accounts in your name, or use your details to make fraudulent purchases. They could also sell on your details to other crooks.

What do I need to do?

If you've been affected, you should change your online passwords. Then monitor your bank and credit card accounts keeping an eye out for any dodgy transactions. Also be very wary of any emails or calls asking for more information to help deal with the data breach: crooks often pose as police, banks or, in this instance they could pretend to be from BA.

Will my booking be affected?

BA says none of the bookings have been hit by the breach. It said it has contacted all those affected to alert them to the problem with their data, but booked flights should go ahead.

Will there be compensation for me?

If you suffer any financial loss or hardship, the airline has promised to compensate you.

'Terribly concerning'

Jorg Herrera, from Amersham in Buckinghamshire, received an email from BA last night having booked tickets with the airline last month.

"I have six cards linked to my BA account," he told the BBC. "I have no idea how much of my information has been stolen.

"I will have to go to each of my credit card providers, cancel the cards, and all the direct debits, etc, related to those cards. This will take a long time, something I have to do with no help from BA.

"This whole thing is terribly concerning and really annoying."

Data duty

BA could potentially face fines from the Information Commissioner's Office, which is looking into the breach.

Rachel Aldighieri, managing director of the Direct Marketing Association, said: "British Airways has a duty to ensure their customer data is always secure. They need to show that they have done everything possible to ensure such a breach won't happen again.

"The risks go far beyond the fines regulators can issue - albeit that these could be hefty under the new [EU data protection] GDPR regime."

Under GDPR, fines can be up to 4% of annual global revenue. BA's total revenue in the year to 31 December 2017 was £12.226bn, so that could be a potential maximum of £489m.

The National Crime Agency and National Cyber Security Centre also confirmed they were assessing the incident.

'Flesh wound'

This is not the first customer relations problem to affect the airline in recent times.

In July, BA apologised after IT issues caused dozens of flights in and out of Heathrow Airport to be cancelled.

The month before, more than 2,000 BA passengers had their tickets cancelled because the prices were too cheap.

And in May 2017, problems with BA's IT systems led to thousands of passengers having their plans disrupted, after all flights from Heathrow and Gatwick were cancelled.

"It does not indicate that the information systems are the most robust in the airline industry," Simon Calder, travel editor at the Independent, told the BBC.

However, he does not think BA will be affected in the long term by the breach.

"The airline has immense strength. Notably it's holding a majority of slots at Heathrow, and an enviable safety record, so while this is embarrassing and will potentially cost tens of millions of pounds to resolve, it's more like another flesh wound for BA, rather than anything serious."

When Bakkt? Bitcoin Futures Market’s Approval Appears Stuck in Limbo/ bitcoin margin trading,bitseven,bitcoin exchange,CoinMarketCap,poloniex,bitfinex

Bakkt was first announced in early August as a bitcoin trading and custody platform, but its launch has been repeatedly delayed It has submitted a proposal to the CFTC, asking for an exemption which would allow it to custody the bitcoin it uses to settle its futures contracts. While CFTC Commissioners were reportedly given the proposal in December, it now appears to be back before CFTC staffers. It is unclear if or when the proposal may be published for a mandatory 30-day public review period. Until the review period has ended – and CFTC Commissioners have voted to approve Bakkt’s exemption – the exchange cannot launch its one-day physically-settled futures contract. More than six months since Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) revealed its vision for Bakkt, the hotly anticipated bitcoin futures market is still awaiting regulatory approval. ICE, the parent of the New York Stock Exchange, originally planned to launch Bakkt in mid-December. Then it got pushed back to late January. Then, on New Year’s Eve, the launch was indefinitely delayed, with ICE saying its previous Jan. 24 target “will be amended pursuant to the CFTC’s process and timeline.” Now, with the first quarter of 2019 nearly over, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission has yet to release Bakkt’s proposed exemption for public comment. That means even if the proposal came out today, the launch can’t happen until mid-April at the earliest since the commissioners have to give the public 30 days to weigh in and then take another few days to read the comments before voting on whether to approve the plan. And as of late February, the proposal, which would allow Bakkt to custody the bitcoin trading on the platform, was still being reviewed by the CFTC’s Division of Market Oversight, two officials said. Why the hold-up? The government shutdown, which began on Dec. 22 and lasted a record five weeks, creating backlogs at the CFTC and other agencies, surely didn’t help matters. In getting caught up, the agency has prioritized other matters, mostly unrelated to crypto, including more than half a dozen enforcement actions announced since the shutdown ended. But the ambitious nature of Bakkt’s business plan is likely also a factor in drawing out the process. Physical settlement To be clear: the issue is not necessarily with Bakkt’s envisioned one-day futures contract, which would be physically settled, meaning the buyer would receive the actual commodity – bitcoin – at maturity. In late February Amir Zaidi, the director of the CFTC’s Division of Market Oversight, told CoinDesk that the analysis for evaluating cash-settled bitcoin futures contracts – such as what CME Group and the Cboe offer – is slightly different from the analysis for evaluating physically-settled bitcoin futures contracts. The different analyses examine whether the futures contracts, once offered, are “readily susceptible to manipulation,” Zaidi said. This is a concern with cash-settled contracts, where at the end one party pays the other the difference between the spot and futures prices; if the spot price is determined from a manipulated price feed, one side is getting bilked. When Bakkt? Bitcoin Futures Market’s Approval Appears Stuck in Limbo

Bakkt was first announced in early August as a bitcoin trading and custody platform, but its launch has been repeatedly delayed

It has submitted a proposal to the CFTC, asking for an exemption which would allow it to custody the bitcoin it uses to settle its futures contracts. While CFTC Commissioners were reportedly given the proposal in December, it now appears to be back before CFTC staffers.

It is unclear if or when the proposal may be published for a mandatory 30-day public review period.

Until the review period has ended – and CFTC Commissioners have voted to approve Bakkt’s exemption – the exchange cannot launch its one-day physically-settled futures contract.

More than six months since Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) revealed its vision for Bakkt, the hotly anticipated bitcoin futures market is still awaiting regulatory approval.

ICE, the parent of the New York Stock Exchange, originally planned to launch Bakkt in mid-December. Then it got pushed back to late January. Then, on New Year’s Eve, the launch was indefinitely delayed, with ICE saying its previous Jan. 24 target “will be amended pursuant to the CFTC’s process and timeline.”

Now, with the first quarter of 2019 nearly over, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission has yet to release Bakkt’s proposed exemption for public comment. That means even if the proposal came out today, the launch can’t happen until mid-April at the earliest since the commissioners have to give the public 30 days to weigh in and then take another few days to read the comments before voting on whether to approve the plan.

And as of late February, the proposal, which would allow Bakkt to custody the bitcoin trading on the platform, was still being reviewed by the CFTC’s Division of Market Oversight, two officials said.

Why the hold-up? The government shutdown, which began on Dec. 22 and lasted a record five weeks, creating backlogs at the CFTC and other agencies, surely didn’t help matters. In getting caught up, the agency has prioritized other matters, mostly unrelated to crypto, including more than half a dozen enforcement actions announced since the shutdown ended.

But the ambitious nature of Bakkt’s business plan is likely also a factor in drawing out the process.

Physical settlement

To be clear: the issue is not necessarily with Bakkt’s envisioned one-day futures contract, which would be physically settled, meaning the buyer would receive the actual commodity – bitcoin – at maturity.

In late February Amir Zaidi, the director of the CFTC’s Division of Market Oversight, told CoinDesk that the analysis for evaluating cash-settled bitcoin futures contracts – such as what CME Group and the Cboe offer – is slightly different from the analysis for evaluating physically-settled bitcoin futures contracts.

The different analyses examine whether the futures contracts, once offered, are “readily susceptible to manipulation,” Zaidi said. This is a concern with cash-settled contracts, where at the end one party pays the other the difference between the spot and futures prices; if the spot price is determined from a manipulated price feed, one side is getting bilked.

With a physically settled contract like Bakkt’s, “you don’t have to worry about the cash market, so some of [the] concerns [are resolved],” said Zaidi, who would not discuss the proposal any further.

I was struck by an uninsured driver on 02-10-11. Because the driver who struck me was uninsured I was forced to file a claim with my insurance company(Omni Insurance). The car was towed to CJ's collision at 6128 n beechwood Philadelphia, pa ,19138 on 02-11-11. Phone number 215-848-2836. On 02-14-11 Omni insurance sent out an appraiser to evaluate the vehicle. They then faxed an estimate on 02-15-11 totaling $5300 to CJ's collision shop. I went to the collision shop on 02-15-11 to sign paperwork giving them permission to work on my car. They then began the repairs. On 02-18-11 the insurance company then deemed my car a total loss. The vehicle is a 2005 Nissan Altima SL with 96,477 miles. The NADA value for the vehicle is 10,995. According to Omni insurance a car is deemed a total loss when the repairs reach 70% of the value of the vehicle. Omni insurance valued my car at 7,415. They then proposed a settlement offer of 5826.40. They deducted 975.00 in prior damages(which I disagree with) and 1000.00 my deductible. The settlement offer included 386.40 in sales tax. After negotiating on 02-28-11 they proposed an offer of 7835.30. The value they gave my car was 9255. Again 975.00 was deducted and my 1000.00 deductible. They including sales tax and tags/registration fee in the offer. I accepted the offer out of desperation because they also stopped paying for the rental car I was driving on 02-28-11. I work, attend school and have a child my schedule requires that I have a car so I paid out of pocket for a rental car until 03-07-11, expecting the payment to be issued to my lien holder by then so I could purchase another car. I contacted them on 03-07-11 inquiring about my payment and was informed they did not pick the vehicle up from the collision shop therefore they were not issuing a payment. The collision shop gave them a bill of 1750.00 for the repairs they did and the storage fees. The insurance company disagrees with this and refuses to pick the vehicle up and issue my payment. They have also stated this may come out of my settlement offer. The insurance company already has the title to the car and all the necessary paperwork to the vehicle but refuses to issue a payment. I work 2 part time jobs and neither offer health insurance, so in 2014 I will have to buy some. If I got very sick I would be wiped out with that one, so it seems that I am in a Catch 22. I don't make that much money ($8 and $10 for the 2 jobs where I work 24 and 18 hours a week respectively.) I want to get life insurance, but I am not sure whhich type of insurance I should get. I have done lots of research and majority of the research tells me to get term life insurance, but I am still confused to why. Here is a little about me: 30 years old, married, and have a baby. Non-smoker, and overall healthy, minus some arthritis. My first thought is to get whole life insurance because it definitely covers my family if I pass away when I am a lot older. However, I then hear that whole life is not a great investment - too expensive and lot of cost/fees involved, you don't really know how much of your premiums are going into your insurance and how much is going into the savings where the company invest the money. After hearing that, I think well term isn't so bad then. I get a lower premium for the same amount of life insurance. But then, I know term insurance only last a limited time. I see 30 years usually being the longest term life insurance. Well 30 years from now (considering nothing happens to me in the next 30 years), I will only be 60. That is still pretty young and then I wil have to renew my term insurance, but at 60, my premium will be a lot more than it would be right now. SO as you can see, I am at a lost and have no clue what to do. I would like some opinions, feedback, suggestions, etc, that would be much appreciated. (side note- when explaining which insurance is better, please explain in simple terms. Hi, I'm 27 with a full CLEAN UK driving licence and keep getting ridiculously high car insurance quotes. So, my brother got into a car accident about 3 years ago. He was driving his car and a motorcyclist ran into him doing around 90 mph, causing the bike to flip and the guy on the bike to dismount and skid across the freeway. The motorcyclist was lucky he didn't get run over or killed. It was deemed by both the insurance companies that it was the motorcyclists fault and when the motorcyclist tried to sue our insurance company, we got a letter from our attorney that the case had been dismissed and no further action was needed. Today, we got a call out of the blue from Mercury saying my brother couldn't be on the insurance anymore because they had settled with the motorcyclist for $100,000 and basically, if we didn't get him off the insurance, my whole family would be removed. We didn't receive any notification that Mercury was planning on paying this guy out or that our rates would be altered. We called the attorney's office but he wasn't in and we explained the situation and the receptionist said they might of just settled anyway without letting us know even though this whole thing wasn't even my brother's fault. My question is, if the accident was the fault of the motorcyclist and when the motorcyclist initially sued and was denied a settlement (there was no mention of a settlement on the attorney's letter; it just said that it was dismissed), how and why would Mercury give this jacka$$ $100,000 and deny my brother coverage? Opinion: Christmas and the plight of Christians in Pakistan

“The year 2017 will be one of peace and love,” Naheed Naz told me. “There is nothing in the scriptures about it, but Jesus puts feelings in your heart about what is going to happen. It is a matter of faith and we believe in it.”

I met Naz, in her 40s, and a nursing teacher with a Masters degree in Public Health, at the All Saints Church in the heart of Peshawar’s old city. She sounded optimistic despite the last days of 2016 bringing more turmoil in Pakistan for Christians.

Christmas messages were received with death threats and a Christian man was arrested on December 30 for allegedly desecrating the Koran. He currently faces the death penalty.

I could feel this tense atmosphere as I approached the All Saints Church on Christmas Day. The 19th-century building of Islamic Saracenic style reflecting in the brilliantly sunny day outside.

As I entered the the church’s hall, the faithful were taking seats in anticipation of the Christmas mass. I had to come in through heavy security. The street where the church stands was blocked at both ends by sand barriers and guarded by security personal. On 22 September 2013, a twin suicide bomb attack during a Sunday mass at the church killed 127 people.

I asked Naz how the Christmas of her childhood differed from now. She recounted memories of her childhood and her sister’s: the letter to Santa, her mother and father who used to make their life loving and rich, and the moral values of love and peace Christmas used to bring. Naz lost her mother in the 2013 bombing.

A little later, as I sat in the church, I met Shafi Maseeh, 75, who also lost his son in the same terror attack. He had little to say. Shafi is the real prototype of a Christian in Pakistan. A janitor by trade, he had no good memories to share of anything.

Most Christians I talked to felt a loss of identity, isolation and a deep sense of alienation. There was no nostalgia for the past, nor any enthusiasm for the present.

In the All Saints Church, I was not alone at the Christmas ceremony. The local media had come too. Father Patrick Naeem was happy to see them and thanked the government, the media and the chief of the Pakistani army, while also asking journalists to respect the parishioners as they took photos of the ceremony.

One reporter asked me what I was doing there. When I told her I was going to do a story on Christmas and would like to interview her too she angrily replied, “I am not a Christian, do I look like one?” I was shocked for a moment. “There is nothing wrong with being a Christian,” I said.

Another reporter warned me as I was leaving the place: “Be careful, liberals are on the hitlist.” I just kept quiet.

Pakistan’s Christian minority

There is no definitive figure, but Christians make up roughly 1.6% of the population of Pakistan, as many as Hindus, according to the latest official statistics.

Christians mostly converted from Hinduism to escape the caste-dominated Indian society before the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947. But changing religion didn’t help: the roots of discrimination based on caste run deep in both Indian and Pakistani society.

The plight of Christians has persisted for decades, but there has also been a rise of hatred against Christians since the late 1980s, when the dictator Zia ul Haq introduced Pakistan’s blasphemy law, particularly used to persecute Christians.

A double oppression

Pakistani society is still marred by racism and questions of caste, even among Muslims, despite the Qur’an setting out radical equality for all.

Across South Asia, Muslims remain divided up by various hierarchical systems. This long trail of caste-related injustice goes back to the beginnings of subcontinental societies and seems impervious to the intrusion of other sources of identity such as the nation-state or religion.

So the Christian community reels under a double oppression of racism, based on the low castes many Christians come from, and religious intolerance towards their belief system.

But even among minorities, Christians are particularly singled out, for a number of reasons. They are visible: they live mostly in urban areas and are often employed in low-wage jobs. They are also the poorest of the community.

In December 2015, the Capital Development Authority of Islamabad submitted a report suggesting that the Christian “ugly slums” of the capital be destroyed to keep the city clean. The CDA, in this unprecedentedly stupid move (“their Trump Moment” as the English daily Dawn put it), argued that the campaign of destruction would preserve Islamabad’s aesthetics and maintain its Muslim-majority demographic balance.

The proposal was rightly contested by political parties, activists, and NGOs and thwarted by the Supreme Court, but it was a worrying sign of just how poorly Christians are thought of by the Pakistani elite.

Adding insult to injury, Christians in Pakistan are also seen as representatives of the US and other Western powers who are often held to be responsible for the plight of Muslims around the globe.

Christianity in politics

The plight of Christians is linked to the political foundation of Pakistan and the much criticised Two Nation Theory which became the basis of Partition in 1947. Partition aimed to create a state for Hindus (India) and one for Muslims (Pakistan).

Christians are historically considered to have positively contributed to Pakistani statehood, thus helping the development of the Pakistani society, but today they, along with other non-Muslims, are forbidden from holding high office.

The Christian vote in Pakistan is around 1.3 million, second to the Hindu vote, which is around 1.5 million. While the Hindu vote is mostly concentrated in the Sindh and Punjab regions, Christian voters are more scattered. Since the minority vote is restricted to a few electorates, political parties are not generally interested in serving them, though there is a lot of lip service to minority issues.

Minority representatives protest the problem of segregation from mainstream politics. There is no doubt that the electoral system adds to the problems of already frustrated minority communities in Pakistan. Minorities don’t have the right to place their own candidates in elections. They can vote for any Muslim candidate in their constituency from within the general seats, and they also have the right to vote for a minority candidate, but they don’t have the right to choose these. They are instead given minority seats for which tickets are allotted by mainstream political parties.

Fractured communities

While talking to various Christians, I observed very little sense of community. All identity revolves around the personal and in Pakistan, that is steeped in the psychology of status.

Christians in Pakistan are faced with both victim-blaming from without and the self-loathing it generates within the individual.

Continuous repression as a community within social and political life in Pakistan has led some to blame themselves for their problems. Self-incrimination, a shallow sense of belonging to the mainstream and the loss of the social self-were often apparent in my conversations for this article.

“Our people are not serious about their studies; they don’t save money,” a priest who works as a waiter at my university’s student accommodation told me. “I do save, though I am usually in debt, while keeping my needs to the minimum.” When I asked if it is because of the loss of hope that some Christians struggle in school and work, he replied, “No, I have made it from a janitor to a waiter. My boys are going to school. Isn’t it an environment conducive to success?”

Living with contradiction

Christians are often the recipient of local charities. “Yes, we like them, because they grew up with us,” a high-level political activist in Peshawar told me. “They clean our homes and we give them our used clothes, and also food. They are good people. We also offer them gifts for Christmas. We just did this year, too.” The activist was also a trader in the market in front of the All Saints Church.

Christians often feel the same way. “The political parties don’t care for us,” the priest at Peshawar University said. “Some politicians do, though. They offer us gifts for Christmas. I also got my package. They change the carpets of our church every now and then. This is good.”

In the present environment of hopelessness and fear, the only option left for Christians is to learn to live with Pakistan’s deep contradictions – discrimination from the state, but charity from politicians.

Centuries of continuous repression have left many without any sense of identity within their home country. Many Christians here just want to breathe – being able to truly live is a distant dream.
