bio warnings: brief mention of a near drowning accident.
princess melody andersen came by the nickname ‘princess of disaster’ quite honestly. despite being born into a royal family and being gifted with the title of a princess from birth, she never felt like she fit in or that she was deserving of the title. while her parents were beyond loving and accepting of all of their children, she couldn’t help but feel as if all eyes were on her. it’s a rare feat when anyone ages gracefully and living out those awkward teenage years while everyone is watching you, would be considered a nightmare for most. beyond the pressure that came with being a princess, melody couldn’t help but feel as if there was something her parents were hiding from her.
their nature of how protective they were of her and her siblings was almost suffocating. little did she know, there was a very good reason for that. her mother’s past. while the andersen children were banned from leaving the castle walls, especially to go down to the shore, melody felt this urge to break the rules that were set in place. just the sound of the waves that could be heard called to her. this led to melody choosing to sneak out against her parents' wishes and explore the ocean. she would spend hours collecting shells or swimming in the salty brine, dreaming of a life far away from her own. it was there she met one of her only friends, a fish that she talked to named florian.
as the years went on, suitors were introduced to melody in preparation for possible marriage and union of two kingdoms. but most of the people that she met were turned away by her awkwardness or clumsy nature, something that she grew to feel fairly insecure about. would she ever meet someone who would accept her for who she was? quirks and all. her only escape from this all was when she was sneaking down to the water, deciding one day to bring one of her younger siblings. it was then something bad happened, her sibling losing their footing and nearly drowning if it hadn’t been for melody’s swift action to rescue them.
it was that moment her parents found out about her disobeying them for years, their rules became more strict. resentment and guilt began to brew inside of melody and she decided to sneak out for one last time. in her mind, her family would be better off without her. but this time she decided to strike a similar deal with a sea witch named morgana, wanting to reside in the ocean and have the freedom she longed for. but her hopes and dreams were easily dashed when she found out about her mother’s past through the witch. luckily, morgana in the end was able to be defeated and life resumed as normal.
while there were no longer any boundaries or secrets, the guilt that melody felt at that moment followed her for years and still does.

A manual’s take on fairytales: part 3
And for the final part of this quick dig through the Hatier book by Julien Harang and Pierre Laporte... ANDERSEN’s FAIRYTALES!
I) Intro
Hans Christian Andersen
Just like the character of his fairytale “The ugly little duckling”, Hans Christian Andersen had a sad childhood. He was born in Odense (Denmark) the 2nd of April 1805, in a working-class family. His father was a cobbler not very interested in his son, while his mother was a brutal washerwoman. The great poverty of the family increased at the death of Hans’ father, in 1816. Still a young kid he had to leave school and work here and there to earn some money. His mother married another cobbler, but this one did not had more affection for Hans than his original father had. Hans suffered a lot from this lack of love, and all of this life he sought this feeling. At thirteen years old he decided to exile himself to leave a new life, fitting better his dreams: he left Odense and reached the capital, Copenhague.
Settling in a poor and infamous part of Copenhague, Andersen had many more troubles. He tried to find his way in life, passing quickly through different vocations - singer, dancer, comedian, dramaturgist... But his lack of culture was a handicap, and his strange physical appearance did not help: he was very thin, very skinny, with longs legs, a long nose, clumsy gestures and unpredictable reactions. Wealthy and educated protectors took an interest in him and offered him a good education. In a few years Hans erased his lack of knowledge, but at the cost of the teasing of his comrades, who liked to tease this clumsy schoolboy older than them. Once he finished his studies Andersen could finally lead the life he dreamed of and turn over his sad life. He started writing while travelling through Europe (an exceptional fact, as at the time travels throughout Europe were rare).
Starting in 1835, Andersen started to met fame and glory thanks to his novels, theater plays, poetries and travel tales. In this same year he published his first fairytales, under the title “Fairy tales told for children”. Hans didn’t actually care much about those, and like the brothers Grimm was quite surprised at their enormous success. Suddenly the small unloved hard-worker became a famous and renowned author. So since 1835 all the way to his death in 1975 he led a brilliant life, made of numerous travels and publications. Andersen met the greatest writers of the 19th century and was invited in all the courts of Europe.
In his fairy tales (more than 150), Andersen stayed faithful to the Scandinavian traditions by leaving a large part of his stories to descriptions of nature, or by reusing traditional Norse characters. However, unlike the tales of the brothers Grimm, his fairytales donot belong to folk literature, because Andersen gave them a very personal and original style. Often he took inspiration from his own life: his misfortunes, his lack of love (The Little Mermaid), his desire to escape and flee (The Little Match Girl), his exile (The Little Ugly Duckling). His fast and lively writing, filled with energy and humor, gave a true force to his characters and their adventures. Storyteller by nature, Andersen loved to read out loud his own works in front of his friends and hosts, charming his audience through “the love of the little mermaid and the distress of the little match girl”.
II) The fairytales of Andersen
1) The Princess and the Pea
Nothing to say.
2) The Little Match Girl
Nothing to say.
3) The Ugly Little Duckling
Nothing to say.
4) The Little Mermaid
Nothing to say.
4.5) Sirens and mermaids
(Note: In French we don’t have two different words for “mermaid” or “sirens”. In French both are called “sirènes” and so I’ll try to translate with the correct terms)
In Greek mythology sirens were sea-demons with the head of women and the bodies of birds. They lived south of Italy, in islands near Sicily, and seduced the sailors through their melodious songs, to lure them to the rocky coasts of their island - and when the ships broke themselves against the sharp rocks, they devoured the men inside. It is in the Middle-Ages that the siren (or mermaid) becomes a being half-woman half-fish. In the 8th century, an English monk wrote in his “Book of Monsters” about the “sea maidens” that seduced sailors with their beautiful body and soft voices ; being from the head to the navel woman but their body then ending in a scaly fish tail they use to hide in the water.
Some sailors, such as Christopher Columbus in 1493, said they saw mermaids - but they were probably sea mammals such as manatees or dugongs - and many tales were told about how these creatures lured young people to the sea in order to steal their soul. The idea of the mermaid as both dangerous and seductive was deeply rooted in the minds - one had to wait for Andernsen’s tales to finally see the idea of a mermaid as a virtuous princess able to feel love.

The Art of Dying
Bob Dylan
In the spring of 1965, a friend of a friend (whom I didn’t much care for, to be honest, and whose name I certainly don’t remember) introduced me to Bob Dylan. My connection with the then folk singer (an epithet Dylan always professed to hate, at least later on) was more or less instant.
How did the subject of Dylan even come up?
We must have been discussing pop or rock or however we thought of the Beatles or the Searchers or the Stones or the Zombies or Dave Clark Five or the Hollies, or, or, or at the time, probably hanging out by the boathouses flanking the canal that ran through our little town linking the Baltic Bay with a small inland lake, which we called a bay (Big Bay and Little Bay—sounds like an H.C. Andersen Fairy Tale). These boathouses were where the in-name-only in-crowd used to hang out of an evening to smoke cigarettes and eat ice cream and shoot the breeze as it were.
Now, I was quite knowledgeable on the subject of pop or rock since not only did I love the music—I’d go so far to say that music was what I lived for at the time—but I was also writing a weekly music column for a local paper which meant that I, on a weekly basis, competed with some equally pop-loving (though not as cool as I, obviously) classmates for the few copies of New Musical Express that every Tuesday morning would hit the only news kiosk in town (Pressbyrån by the railway station) that carried foreign papers. I needed NME (or, if worse, alas, had come to worse, Melody Marker, or in times of utter desperation, Fabulous) and its wealth of up-to-date info about our musical heroes not only to write good articles, but also to maintain my status as my peers’ go-to guy for the latest and final word on the music scene—yes, information was certainly power, and I reveled in the status of it. NME was my secret weapon.
Now, unbeknownst to me, this friend of a friend whose name I refuse to recall must at some point have asked me what I thought about Bob Dylan and I must have looked at him: huh? unwittingly betraying my ignorance (and how had I missed Dylan, I have now idea—he must have been covered in these music papers by then, and at some length). Oh, man, this friend of a friend probably said, you have to listen to this guy, and I said sure, love to, and shortly thereafter (nothing was very far from anywhere else in my town) we were at his place (I seem to remember where he lived, which is odd) listening to “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan” and as I said, for some strange reason (he was nothing like my British pop bands, obviously) the connection was instant.
Even today, I could not tell you what it was, precisely, but I believe that some portion of his incredible appeal for me was that “Hey, I could do that.” It wouldn’t take a band and drums and electric guitars. Just an acoustic guitar and me, that’s all. I had a good voice, loved to sing, was in the school choir and all that, and Dylan’s songs were simple, three or four chords at most—a lot of words though.
The other thing that must have appealed, carried important currency, was that if I had not heard of Dylan, then nor had the vast majority of the kids in town (this nameless friend of a friend obviously the exception) so there was a lot of with-it status to be gained in knowing and digging (weird word that, striking a chord somewhere between liking and understanding) this oddly looking and weirdly sounding American and his long, nasal songs.
To be honest, my English was not stellar, but as far as rudimentary went, I did grasp the gist of most of Dylan’s lyrics and here, in my mind, was also someone who spoke for me—or “us” (the poor, misunderstood (hence mistreated and unappreciated) youth of the civilized world)—and who pulled no punches about the true lay of the land (think “Masters of War” and “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” et al.). From there on I took to Dylan more than I had ever taken to the Beatles, and that is saying a lot.
At that time, I used to cart around a gray and silver Phillips reel-to-reel (mono) tape recorder (weighed a ton) and this friend of a friend, since I asked so nicely, was okay with me recording his Dylan records. Stay right there, be right back—with the Phillips. I think he had four or possibly five Dylan albums at this time, so his patience did begin to ebb toward the end of his Dylan collection. Once they were all in my can, as I recall, I did have all extant Dylan recordings at the time (this was prior to “Highway 61 Revisited” which was released in August of that year), and for the next several months, this was all I ever listened to, period.
In fact, as I moved down to Stockholm that summer, I brought the reel-to-reel with me and I played nothing but Dylan for the people I met, very few of whom, just like in my home town, had heard of him. This, of course, made me quite hip (or crazy) and I reveled in this notoriety. In fact, I think it fair to say that notoriety comprised the bulk of sustenance at the time.
Once I was settled in Stockholm, I eventually bought all of Dylan’s albums, all the way up to and including “Nashville Skyline” (which I didn’t really like all that much) while I managed to miss Dylan’s April 29, 1966 Stockholm concert, but that’s another story.
I also learned how to play and sing most of his acoustic-only songs, which included remembering tons of lyrics. I sang these a lot, both to myself (both as practice and for the sheer enjoyment of it) and others (who were always very appreciative and sometimes even admiring—valuable stuff that).
Later, after leaving Stockholm, I did buy “Self Portrait” when it came out, and eventually I also heard “New Morning”, but neither of these impressed much, and by 1970 I had pretty much grown out of this my hero.
Dylan, to be honest, never regained his hero status with me. My worship period truly ended with “Blonde on Blonde” although “John Wesley Harding” was mystically cool, though not in any recognizable Dylanesque way.
Still, it would be fair to say, and absolutely no lie, that Bob Dylan grew to be an integral part of me during the late 1960s and in some way has stayed with me ever since.
Today I have his first eleven studio recordings—up through “New Morning”—this time around on mp3. I still listen to all of them every now and then.

The Lost Mermaid
Tumblr media
“This is the beginning of the story About a mad mermaid Losing for love jealousy Lies, sacrifice, sadness... The end of the story is the beginning On the dark sea... Now the first page of the story Is turned...”
Here I am with the following part of this month’s themed week in “Throwback Thursday”! Today’s subject is the first full album by the visual kei band Misaruka, entitled Episodes -Merrow- and released on 2nd May 2012 (we are going to review the first issue of this release and not the second one, released two years later). The album’s concept, as you can read from the introductive lines, taken from the first track, is inspired by the famous tale of the Little Mermaid, written by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, here pictured in a darker atmosphere, fitting this band’s style. And now... let’s review!
Tumblr media
- -Reamhra-: the album kicks off with a dim and fascinating SE, with a monologue saying the words mentioned in the introductive part; a clear indication for what the album will feature.
- -Karma-: a gothic intro opens this song, with energetic guitars which develop a quite rhythmical rock sound; Rui’s voice is quite peculiar here, with a relevant use of clearer tones, for a curious interpretation; a simple but enjoyable rock track. ---> 8.5/10
- -Sin-: in this song, the gothic style continues to be more prominent, in a faster sound and brighter vocals; the melody is enriched by a powerful violin and the guitars, especially in the solo, make a gorgeous work, building up a solid song. ---> 9/10
- -Forbidden-: a deep piano playing opens this song, in a magnificient and romantic rock theme; Rui’s voice is really nostalgical, with soft and warm touches and the guitars kick off an unexpected virtuosism, for a balanced tune. ---> 9/10
- -Rosary-: the lead-track of the seventh single Cailleach Rosary features a light and soft rock sound, with the rhythm becoming whirling and engaging; the vocals are creepy and vibrant and finally the bass starts to have a prominent role in the sound; a quite technical track. ---> 9/10
- -False&Truth-: the obscure and solemn style is strongly maintained in this song, where the sound is energetic and positive and Rui sings with clear tones, showing off his unique talent; the quality of the release doesn’t change at all. ---> 9/10
- -Prince-: a whirling violin opens a song whose style is incredibly sumptuous and powerful, where the guitars and the drums create a strong structure, helped by the violin and the catchy vocals; a melodious rock theme. ---> 9/10
- -Why only me-: the strong sound goes on with this song, accompained by a fascinating piano playing; once again the instruments make a gorgeous work in developing a dynamic rhythm, which becomes greater second per second. ---> 9/10
- -Jester-: one of the most known tracks by Misaruka (and one of my favourite ones) is introduced by Rui’s voice, deep and cutting as ever been; then the sound kicks off powerful, with a nostalgical vibe, greatly helped by the guitars; a catchy and awesome rock song by them. ---> 9.5/10
- -Pathetique-: the album ends with a track which lasts seven minutes, started by a melting piano which developes a melodious interlude; then Rui’s voice is soft and a bit melancholic, fitting the sad and passionate melody which accompains him, developing and adding more depth to its melody; a compelling and quite articulated ballad, which ends an interesting album. ---> 9/10
Final Vote ---> 9/10
This band started their adventure as we know them on 2008, after four years as La neige. In this time they released several singles, but they didn’t catch so much attention as expected. With Episodes -Merrow-, they shown off their style to the visual kei audience, being appreciated or disliked and generating a sort of contrast. Even if their sound, a gothic rock with baroque and nostalgical vibes (a formula which has been used by several acts before them), along with their peculiar and fascinating outfits, might not be considered so innovative and original, this band puts out the best in their music and the final result is quite interesting, without any doubt. Thanks to this solid and promising album, Misaruka made their path a bit brighter, surely becoming one of the most appreciated and underrated acts of contemporary visual kei. An album for who needs to appreciate Misaruka’s music for the first time.
That’s all folks! See you on Sunday for the final part of this month’s themed week in “Focusing on”!
Thanks for the reading!

Wig Wam - Never Say Die - Review
Gerade mein Favorit “Where Does It Hurt” rotzt richtig frech aus den Boxen. Call Of The Wild atmet tiefe 80er Luft der Quiet Riot Machart.
