It's annoying how proactive female protagonists in Asoiaf are often labelled and seen as 'impulsive' by fandom in general. That's never a thing with the male characters. Female characters who get things done, who have agency and want to help people are very often characterized by fandom as wrongly and emotionally reacting to seeing injustice or even when they are engaged in policy making.

Arya is seen as impulsive for stepping in to help Mycah from a sadistic bully. Dany is labelled impulsive for not taking an economics course and reading Karl Marx’s Critique of Political Economy before freeing slaves. One popular post framed Arya and Catelyn as being similar because they apparently run around biting people.

Recall that Catelyn was one of Robb's most important campaign advisers, conducted the diplomatic negotiations for him, wanted less war and more of a peaceful resolution to the conflict and wanted to exchange hostages. And yet this fandom constantly frames the Arya/Cat parallels as them being impulsive and violent.

By the way, Arya does have parallels to Catelyn in terms of their proactiveness in maneuvering in a chauvinistic man's world, their loyalty to family and duty and doing what needs to be done. Fandom, however, always approach the Arya/Cat parallels negatively - as a form of critique of both female characters.

Do these characters have moments where they impulsively react in emotional situations? Yes, like pretty much ALL the characters do in the series. And yet these labels are singularly applied only to the female protagonists.

Arya for example is often careful, analytical and intelligent in her actions. When she escapes KL she carefully considers each step - where to go, where the guards would be, how the guards look, where the guards would search etc. - before planning her move. That's how she was able to outwit the adults like Cersei sending Lannister guards in disguise to catch Arya in enemy territory.

The same is true when Arya escapes Harenhall, where she strategizes, draws up a plan, identifies what she needs and where it is, collects everything and then gives the older boys - Gendry and Hot Pie - instructions on what to do

And then there is the way Arya and Dany are often characterized as violent in a way the male characters never are, when Planetos is a violent, medieval, feudal, grim dark fantasy setting.

To proactively get things done in a violent, patriarchal, chauvinistic world, one often has to engage in violence. Ned, Robert, Stannis, Jon, Robb, Tyrion, Jaime, Theon, Northern lords, NW brothers, KG have all killed people. Arya has to kill a guard to escape her captivity where the most horrible atrocities - including rape and torture - are especially committed on the female prisoners. No one is going to help her, she has to do it herself. And yet because of her gender, she gets condemned as 'violent', 'psychopathic', 'forever damaged', 'should feel guilty and bad about what she did' etc.

As ruler, Daenerys engages in the same medieval, feudal practices that other rules do - we are first introduced to the series' presumable hero Ned Stark, with him chopping off a man's head for desertion. And yet she is seen as violent and tyrannical in a way none of the male rulers are.

I still come across these jokes about Jon Snow counting beets ignoring his chosen one destiny when Daenerys also has an administrative arc in ADwD! Where are all the comments/jokes about Dany's problems with food, trying to grow food, trying to trade for food when she has encountered chosen one prophecy and yet stays behind in Essos doing the same thing Jon Snow is, except ten times harder because Meereen is a city state.

Especially jarring when all of GRRM's comments about ruling focuses on administration and specifically mentions Daenerys story in ADwD again and again. Like this for ex:

“I guess there is an element of fantasy readers that don’t want to see that. I find that fascinating. Seeing someone like Dany actually trying to deal with the vestments of being a queen and getting factions and guilds and [managing the] economy. They burnt all the fields [in Meereen]. They’ve got nothing to import any more. They’re not getting any money. I find this stuff interesting. And fortunately, enough of my readers who love the books do as well.” - GRRM

Dany, Tyrion and Jon's leadership arcs (In ADwD and ACoK) have parallels in that they are mostly of an administrative nature, dealing with money and food, making marriage alliances and unpopular decisions, with characters secretly undermining them. Jon's arc ends with mutineers assassinating him, Dany's arc ends with slavers trying to assassinate her and her fleeing on Drogon and Tyrion's arc ends with the Battle of Blackwater, Tywin coming back and Tyrion losing his power and position. No matter how well they did or didn't do as leaders, there was always someone in the shadows plotting against them, taking them down.

To single out the lead female characters alone as being impulsive and violent for being proactive and doing what needs to be done in order to survive in a violent, patriarchal world is misogyny at it's finest.

Most anti lc!Jon people cite him being naturally suspicious/isolating to a fault as a leadership flaw which seems to hold up for marsh and the officers, however I'm on a reread of his dance arc and he's like...

Weirdly open about certain plans? In the scene where he sends Val to look for tormund, it mentions that Ed and Mully are both close enough to hear everything they talk about, as well as multiple unnamed sentries straight up watching them leave.

Val also mentions the baby switch THAT NO ONE COMMENTS ON implying that Ed and Mully already knew????

yes both great points, iirc it’s implied that melisandre knows about the baby switch too and i don’t think the men of the nw have any reason to suspect they’re switched and therefore don’t need an explantation. i don’t get that criticism either sometimes. i understand it in Feast for Crows when his friends are ragging on him for not spending time with them anymore and they’re right jon could communicate better with the people who have saved his life and been there for him when he felt more depressed than he ever had. but that’s more an emotional flaw rather than a political one.

he’s speaking to bowen marsh here and tho bowen goes on to disagree with him it’s no secret that jon is going to do it anyway and he just told him why. there are some things he keeps to himself, mance rayder chief among them, but what would have been gained from people knowing that? surely it just would have caused more chaos. and the loan from the iron bank, well iirc he didn’t have much time to share that info before all hell broke loose and even if he did, he is lord commander and is allowed and expected to make many decisions on his own especially regarding food and financing.

most importantly he’s more than clear about what the Real threat is.

this is the quote i chose but it’s not an isolated one. he’s never shutting up about these walkers of his. Old Nan would be so proud.

so does jon have trouble communicating? emotionally yeah. politically? not really, he could do a much better job of selling his point but he’s kind of a dickhead (affectionate) so he’s crisp and to the point but no, the night’s watch knows his reasons for wanting the wildings there, they just don’t like it. some of them for valid reasons might i add, they’re concerned about infighting and starvation, i understand them and am sympathetic but so is jon and that’s why he desperately wanted stannis’ men gone and a loan from braavos.

And, finally for now, the current state of things.

Yoshiko's got what I'll call decent, but not great, late-early-game kinda gear.' Of note: her Airwire Headset, the thing that lets her control several more mechanoids, is just about busted, and she isn't useful enough to make a new one. She's pretty pissy that I'm forcing her to keep wearing it, especially because as I already mentioned, her position entitles her to a beret, which uses the same slot.

Here's the base as it stands right now:

Livestock pens, currently holding several alpacas and one goose for eggs. Don't get too attached to these guys, because some of them die every time there's a fire, which is roughly once a week.

The graveyard, because I wanted a running tally of how many people she's killed. Current tally: 20.

The main entrance, aka a gauntlet of traps with a turret. This is pretty new, and long-term it's probably going to become a killbox that's a bit more detached from the base. (To the north you'll see a long power line from when the wind generator used to be to the NW.)

The prisoner quarters. Currently hosting a prisoner! Might release him. Might try to recruit him. More on that later.

Dining room.

Walk-in freezer. 'But isn't it kinda a bad idea to give your freezer wooden walls facing an area that you just said gets set on fire weekly?' Yes. Yes it is. I'm working on it.

Kitchen.

Research room + the comms console, because it had to go somewhere.

Batteries + generators.

Mechanoid creation facilities.

Hospital.

Yoshiko's meditation room, which doubles as the room for rituals right now.

Yoshiko's bedroom. Later on, this will be moving.

Garden, currently featuring rice and cotton. Also there's a giant sloth there in the picture.

Mami's room.

Genetics lab. More on that later too.

Raw materials storage + the wind generator.

Currently unused, because I just rebuilt this area.

Used to be the rec room, but I hurriedly reworked it when Mami showed up, so now it's a classroom with a billiards table in it. A cool classroom, for sickass kids.

Crafting room.

Dry goods storage.

Near-term goals, in roughly descending order of immediacy:

Research solar power. The wood-fired generators are a decent staple, but right now I still run out of power if the wind is dead for too long.

Either get this prisoner out of here, or recruit him. Either one is going to take a while, since he's pretty freshly injured and Yoshiko is horrible at social interaction.

Gather some more genes so Yoshiko can genetically modify herself for things like not getting food poisoning so easily. This will very likely involve taking some genetic samples from prisoners against their will. Genetically modifying yourself requires a days-long recuperation period while the new genes set in, so that's going to be a pretty risky move.

Build better defenses, because I've reached the wealth level where the game is willing to throw multiple enemies with actual firearms at me.

Move some of the more critical parts of the base into that mountain in the left, which will make them safer from a few existential threats.

Summon the Diabolus, which will let me build better mechs if I can kill it.

Buy a big batch of Luciferium, and get Yoshiko started on it. This will essentially give her a terminal life-or-death addiction, in exchange for making her nearly impervious to pain and disease, all-around more capable, and able to recover from most lasting injuries. With a single colonist, maintaining a steady supply isn't too hard, and it sinks a decent chunk of money into consumable goods, which will keep the colony wealth (and thus the difficulty of raids) down. Disease and passing out from pain are two of the biggest weaknesses of a lone colonist, so this will boost her survivability by a ton.

And, just to put it somewhere, the current mod list, courtesy of RimPy. I'd like to have Combat Extended in here too, but it currently seems to be in a weird spot:

Basically a lot of Asian dispora created magical gun martial arts, though like if they fight someone from the ancestral home. You can see the difference between their tactics

By the pope, could there be someone with both cowboy and samurai ancestry I could make? Is that possible? How I don’t make it goofy as possible?

You could do a lot of cool shit if look past America beyond the surface levels

22:50 – 홍중 (Hongjoong)

Minnie's notes; so I was initially writing this for my boyfriend...and then shit happened in my own life so I ended up writing it for me too go figure

Looking up from his late-night coffee as the front door opened, the smile that crept onto Hongjoong’s face melted into a concerned frown when he caught onto his boyfriend’s exhausted expression. Setting his mug down and padding his way across to the sofa, Hongjoong reached his hand out, taking y/n’s hand in his own as he waited for his boyfriend to mention what was wrong.

“Work sucked…stupid clients and their stupid demands.” Resting his head against Hongjoong’s shoulder, y/n played with the ends of his sleeves, the pout on his face deepening the longer he thought about his day. Humming in confusion when he was pulled to his feet and gently shooed in the direction of the bedroom, y/n turned to a determined looking Kim Hongjoong.

“I’m confused…”

“You go take a bath and unwind, and I’ll get the living room ready, c’mon, go~!”

Waiting for the last of the popcorn to well, pop, while y/n relaxed in the bath, Hongjoong took another look at his carefully crafted blanket and cushion pile across the sofa and living room floor. It was the epitome of comfort and all that was missing was the popcorn and Hongjoong holding his boyfriend in his arms. Bouncing on his feet while he watched the last few seconds tick by, Hongjoong popped open the microwave door and the now-ready bowl of popcorn to the table, a pleased smile on his face as he looked upon his handiwork. All that was missing was a certain y/n—

“Joong love…did you set all of this up?” His jaw hanging as he took in the sight in front of him, y/n blinked back grateful tears as he wrapped Hongjoong in an impossibly tight hug. Burying his head in the shorter man’s shoulder while Hongjoong pulled him in the direction of the sofa and the mass of blankets, y/n watched in stunned silence as Hongjoong turned on his favourite film.

“We’re watching Pretty Woman?”

“Uh huh! Figured you needed to unwind…and I’m kinda coming round to the film.” Hongjoong admitted, the grin on y/n’s face increasing tenfold.

“I knew it! I told you you’d like the film!”

Lodge of Agriculture 1199 who meet in the Yatton Temple here in the Province of Somerset.

The Adair Club the official light blues club of Somerset had a fraternal visit to this wonderful lodge last night, lead by our Chairman Mike Norton and Secretary Craig Harding, myself and Chris Cook as the NW Reps we had a wonderful night amongst friends, good men and worthy Freemasons.

We saw a second degree ceramony that really was wonderful for our bro Les, every officer doing a brilliant job from the master down, special mention of Charlie S for a brilliant rendition of the TB.

The festive board or after meeting was awesome, jovial, inspirational with nice food and wine and great company.

Lots of money raised for local causes too.

Lodge of Agriculture is where you will have a great night of Freemasonry.

In a beautiful place tonight!

It took a bit to get here. While I hate to keep pointing out the inaccuracies of weather forecasting yesterday was a complete miss.

After Rock Sound we went to Governor’s Harbor, named such because it was the first seat of government in the Bahamas. We anchored a bit north of the harbor behind Levi Cay. Why? The reports of the anchor holding in Governors Harbor were not favorable and the wind was forecast to be from the west to north west, and Levi Cay would provide protection from winds from that direction. Governors Harbor did not.

Guess what happened? More on that in a bit.

We were looking forward to Governors Harbor, friends of ours that have extensively cruised the Bahamas had nice reviews of the place. Favorable reviews of food and gift shops that is. And they were spot on. But we were left feeling empty. And it’s hard to explain.

All of the Settlements we have visited since leaving Georgetown seem to have one commonality, they are run down, depressed and , frankly, dirty. Beer bottles and snack food wrappers line the roads. It’s depressing. Governors Harbor had a couple of nice food and beverage places, but that was it. Rock Sound was the same. We skipped Hatchet Bay for these reasons and, the second part of the story, the weather.

Which brings us to today’s anchorage.

The weather was forecast to be very benign that night at Governors Harbor, with light winds from the west to north west. We were perfectly placed for that. All was fine till about 1 AM, well after the crew of CIA had turned in. About that time I was awakened by a wave pattern I wasn’t expecting. 5 knot winds shouldn’t produce 1’ wave, especially when in the lee of a big island. And we were swinging around our anchor to a direction I wasn’t anticipating.

It wasn’t long until the 5 knot forecast wind from the NW turned into a 15 knot breeze from the SW. The only direction the wind could come from that we were not protected from. And did I mention we had since been joined by 4 other boats that thought we knew what we were doing?

The four boats spent the next 5 hours at their helms, making sure we didn’t play boat pinball.

Yesterday we left the anchorage expecting seas to die down. Nope, 4-5’ on the bow, so after 7 miles of this crap we found an island to hide behind. And today we found this very nice anchorage.

I need to go below now, mosquitoes are terrible here, so I’ll relate our next port soon.
