hi, this is tsutsumi-kurose!! i have sort of a two part question haha, i was rereading the picture perfect arc, and it seems like shijima and tsukasa have worked together before? in 54 she says "no good ever comes from dealing with you," as if she's done it a lot, so i was wondering if you had any thoughts on that, because idk if that familiarity ever gets explained?

also, in 52 shijima tries to convince him not to "grant her wish" by saying "honorable no. 7 will be angry!" and in 91 when tsukasa tells sakura he sent nene to no. 6's boundary she asks "did your brother say it was okay?" and it's so interesting that these two people who have at least some history with tsukasa seem to think he is swayed by hanako's thoughts and feelings, or like he'd want or need hanako's permission for things. tsukasa certainly doesn't give the impression that he cares much about getting permission for anything, so I was really struck by these instances and i was wondering if you had any thoughts about them!!

Great questions by the way! I hadn't thought very deeply about these before.

1. Have Shijima and Tsukasa worked together before?

I don't think so!

In Chapter 54, we glimpse a flashback of when Tsukasa approaches Shijima about his master plan to create the Picture Perfect world.

Shijima is hesitant about being around him, and for good reason. I mean, she says it right there: she heard about No. 3.

Her focus on No. 3 in their conversation makes me think her reaction is related more to Tsukasa stealing his heart than any actual business he and Shijima might have done before. You could argue that she's only bringing it up because it's Tsukasa's latest misdeed (Hell, it could've happened just a day ago depending on when this conversation took place) but...

I think it's good to recognize Tsukasa and Shijima's history as supernaturals.

You might already know, but Shijima likely died in 1999 or 2000.

You can see her birth year was Showa 58, which is 1983.

She also celebrates the Year of the Rabbit (notably not the zodiac animal of the year this was posted):

As for Tsukasa... I'm inclined to believe he's been locked away the entire time he's been a yorishiro, until he just recently broke out. If not, he was at least locked away for a substantial amount of time.

He tells Amane "Long time no see", and Amane is absolutely terrified. The strength of his reaction makes it easy to believe that Amane hadn't talked to Tsukasa since he murdered him.

As such, I just don't see any place in the timeline where Tsukasa and Shijima could have worked together... but hey! That's just the way I see it.

2. "Honorable No. 7 will be angry!"

I really like this line! And I like the idea that people might assume Tsukasa doesn't want to anger Hanako, for any number of reasons. Could be because he's his brother, could be because he's his yorishiro...

But here's Shijima's line in context:

Tsukasa is breaking Nene out of the jail that Hanako just purposefully put her in.

Shijima has been having to put up with Hanako's crap all day too, btw. Look at this bossy little jerk:

He's a bully!!! And a powerful one, at that. Shijima is aware of this, and it's why he's able to push her around.

Taking all of this into consideration, I don't think this line holds much deeper meaning... onto the next one!

3. "Did your big brother say it was okay?"

So... I think Sakura is saying this because Tsukasa was meddling with Nene again.

Naturally, anytime someone messes with his assistant, he's going to be upset. I think he makes this kinda obvious, too. Most members of the cast must be aware of his giant crush on Nene.

In summary, I think these two aren't necessarily saying these lines because Tsukasa cares about Hanako's opinion, but because they do. Sakura and Shijima could suffer some repercussions if Number 7 decides to interfere in these situations.

as for the au!!!!!! i'm gonna copy paste the chuuya bit and everything around him (which oh god now that i'm on browser view i can see it covers nearly a whole google docs page) but like, beforehand lemme give you a tldr:

angels. demons. all real baby. no abilities tho. the mafia are demons, the hunting dogs are angels, and the agency is made of (mostly) humans who protect humanity when they might get in the crossfire between these factions (there are more angels and demons out there but like. these are their anchors to the human world, in a sense)

some background abt the mafia bc it's necessary (also copy pasted directly hehe sorry): the mafia is basically hell. not as in it sucks, but, it’s a safe haven for demons and fallen angels and the likes (important to note, it employs - mostly in the lower ranks or in utility positions - humans as well)

i think that's all you need to know to understand the chuuya stuff hm. i will def post the whole thing tho when i'm finished! anyway here's darkness my sorrow:

chuuya is a fallen angel. he was a young angel taken for experimentation, humans studying the species to learn more about them, with one single researcher wondering what’ll happen if you combine an angel with a demon somehow - thus, creating arahabaki, inside chuuya, essentially a demonic soul he has to keep at bay. however, one day in the lab, while chuuya was barely aware of what’s happening, arahabaki unleashed itself and killed all the humans around, causing chuuya to officially lose his (physical) wings.

being a fallen angel does not necessarily mean he’s a demon - his holy, radiant powers simply turned darker, and his angelic values are gone, essentially he became a human with the powers of a dark angel, and these powers help him keep arahabaki down. 

chuuya doesn’t remember his past - doesn’t remember being an angel, let alone being experimented on. he knows arahabaki is inside him, and he remembers his own name, and that he’s been alive for A While, but nothing from that time. the events of 15 go p much the same, i wanna say (rimbaud is a demon and the sheep are human btw), so he ends up joining the mafia. 

will verlaine come in at some point? maybe. i wanna say he will be an angel that through experimentation was turned into a demon, and he thinks chuuya is the same. 

the flags were humans, also low ranking in the mafia, and given chuuya's odd nature of a being, mori put him in their care "thinking" he's a weird human anyway (but lbr he knows better). this makes chuuya feel more defined in his humanity and having a sense of belonging to humanity as a whole - he doesn't remember being an angel (tho through plot stuff he does learn about it. blame verlaine), and he no longer is one anyway. he's certainly not a demon, even if he now works for them. he knows he's not Normal, can feel arahabaki living under his skin, but he wants to be human, fascinated with the life you can have as one, and so he chooses to live as one. 

hehe this is my translation of stormbringer into this au, mostly. or like. the first half of it bc oh god oh fuck i still haven't finished reading it. btw as a bonus here's what i have abt adam for now:

idk where adam comes into play but legally he has to be there bc i love him. maybe he's an artificial angel, somehow. i do so love the combination of divine and machine 👀 (<- smt metatron stan)

that choice where you respond to the idea of staying in astraea. mc says yes and a sense of relief/joy washes over felix, but there's still a little voice in the back of his mind that's scared

he wouldn't hold it against them for taking it back. always prepare for the worse, right?

but...they don't

even after fighting monsters, watching him die, dying themself, they haven't brought up the idea of going home. and it seems a little too good to be true, felix thinks. (ok self sabotage)

what if they said that just to protect him? what if they changed their mind at some point and just don't want to hurt him? the guilt and anxiety start to eat at him so he decides he should bring it up himself

"mc, can i ask you something?" "hm? yeah, of course you can." "about...you returning to earth, don't you think it's time we begin discussing how to go about it?"

he struggles to make eye contact while asking. but when all he's met with is silence, his eyes shoot up and there's an unreadable expression on their face. "...what?'

"well, everything has been dealt with, i believe. and you've been gone for so long, i'm afraid of the consequences that might come with staying longer," he says. but mc only starts fidgeting and staring at the floor, and now he's afraid that he's said something wrong.

"mc?" "felix, please, i—" they cut themself off and frown. “please don’t make me go back there. this is the happiest i’ve ever been."

felix is Genuinely confused. i mean, a part of him is bursting with affection, but there's so many reasons for mc to feel differently. and then he's hit with concern because why would their home be worse than fighting the lord of shadows? from all the stories they've shared, earth had its problems but it also had so much more that astraea—that he couldn't offer.

"mc...you have a life back on earth, a home, things i've never heard of. your favourite shows, foods, music...would you really be willing to give it all up?"

they both look at each other for a while until mc breaks eye contact. felix can feel his heart twist while he watches them try to form words. he didn't want them to deal with this. if he could make it easier for both of them he would, but he can't. it was up to them, and even though he loved the idea of them staying, he couldn't get rid of the fear that they'd be unhappy.

"i always wished that i could escape to another universe, you know?" they finally say, biting their lip. "that i could start somewhere new in a fantasy world from a story...be someone else. and then it happened"—they look up at him—"even if it was an accident, i'm here. i know i'm leaving behind a lot, and i know it's dangerous and that i probably seem stupid, but i've thought about it almost every day and..." they trail off. they close their eyes, and their voice is quieter and wavers, "please let me stay.”

in that moment, felix realizes that even when he was too scared to bring it up, mc was thinking about it more often than he could imagine. they were resolute in their decision a long, long time ago. he almost wants to hit himself for thinking they weren't plagued with the idea the same way he was. but he wasn't the priority here so instead he smiles, "mc, i'd love if you stayed."

he watches the tension release from their shoulders and eyes light up, "...really?" "there's no one else i'd want to spend my days with more."

mc grins (and maybe almost cries) and wraps their arms around his neck, saying a muffled "thank you" against his skin

"but if you...if you ever change your mind, i'm sure we can still find a way." "are you trying to get rid of me?" "what? no—no, no, i—" felix panics until mc smiles a little at his reaction and he huffs.

"don't do that to me." they laugh but kiss his nose, "i'm sorry." smiling softly, they say "thank you for letting me stay."

felix's own gaze softens as he reaches for their hand, planting a kiss on their forehead, "thank you for wanting to stay."
