방탄소년단, 아름다우니까 청춘이다 (인터뷰②)

[텐아시아=최진실 기자] 방탄소년단이 돌아왔다. ‘방탄’이란 이름도 그렇고 그동안 칼군무와 더불어 강한 소년들이었던 이들이 힘을 빼고 새로운 모습으로 컴백을 알렸다. 방탄소년단은 세 번째 미니앨범 ‘화양연화 파트원(pt1)’을 공개했다. 방탄소년단의 이번 앨범은 소년을 넘어 성장하고 있는 일곱 남자의 모습을 담았다. 그동안 방탄소년단은 10대들의 꿈, 행복, 사랑을 아우르는 ‘학교 3부작’을 펼쳤다. 이제 방탄소년단은 학교를 넘어 ‘청춘’으로 한 걸음 발자국을 내밀었다. 청춘을 이야기 하는 방탄소년단은 음악적으로도 그동안 곡 작업을 펼쳤던 래퍼 라인을 넘어 보컬 라인도 함께하며 넓어진 스펙트럼을 보였다. 방탄소년단의 성장을 알린 ‘화양연화’, 아름답고 불안한 이 양면적 순간에 대해 청춘을 보내고 있는 방탄소년단은 어떻게 생각하고 있을까. 참고로 이날 인터뷰에는 막내 정국이 학교 시험으로 인해 아쉽게도 함께하지 못했다.

Q. 방탄소년단 멤버들에게 청춘이란 어떤 존재일까. 진 : 아무래도 청춘은 인생에서 제일 빛날 때다. 청춘을 메인 메뉴에 비유할 수도 있다. 메인 메뉴처럼 확실하게 그 때가 가장 아름답고 맛있을 때가 아닌가 싶다. 내게도 지금이 청춘 아닐까? 지민 : 청춘…음 아직은 잘 모르겠다. 하하. 제이홉 : 내 생각에는 지나갈수록 보면 아름다웠던 순간이 아닐까. 슈가 : 지나봐야 알 것 같다. 뷔 : 좀 더 나이가 들고 돌아봐야 될 것 같다. 랩몬스터 : 아직은 잘 모르겠다. 아직 내 곁에 와 있는 건지도 모르겠고 그런 청춘이 있나 싶기도 하다. 상상 속의 동물이랄까. 하하.

Q. 흔히 청춘이 끝나기 전 해야 할 일을 꼽기도 하는데 방탄소년단에게도 그런 것이 있나. 슈가 : 혼자서 뉴욕으로 여행을 가보고 싶다. 자주 혼자 가 보고 싶다. 항상 일곱명이 붙어다니는데 혼자 있는 시간도 필요하다. 기회가 된다면 일주일간 뉴욕으로 가보고 싶다. 볼 것도 많이 보고 맛있는 것도 많이 먹고. 진 : 나는 스카��다이빙을 하고 싶다. 형이 딱 내 나이 때 호주로 여행을 가서 스카이다이빙을 했다고 자랑하는 동영상을 받았는데 정말 부러웠다. 형이 그러던데 나이를 더 먹으면 못할 것 같다더라. 청춘 때 가장 무서운 경험을 해보고 싶다. 제이홉 : 청춘하면 뜨거운 사랑 아닌가. 아름다운 팬분들과 뜨거운 사랑을 해보고 싶다. (일동 : 와 대박이다. 하하.) 뷔 : 가족들과 세계 여행을 해보고 싶다. 같이 꼭 가야겠다! 랩몬스터 : 내가 청춘이라는 것을 알았으면 좋겠다. 청춘을 느끼는 순간이 있었으면 좋겠다. 지민 : 여행을 가보고 싶다. 여행 하면 뭔가 로망이 있다. 혼자거나 누구와 함께거나 여행을 가보고 싶다.

Q. 멤버들끼리 일정을 제외하고 여행을 가본 적이 있나. 지민 : 아직 가본 적이 없다. 여행은 연습생 때 놀이공원? 하하. 슈가 : 경기도 펜션으로 엠티를 갔으면 좋겠다. 우리끼리 간다면 세끼 고기를 먹지 않을까 하하. (일동 : 슈가는 고기 구울 때는 방 안에만 있고 체력을 비축해 놓을 것 같다.)

Q. 학교 3부작을 모두 마무리 지었다. 어쩌면 졸업한 느낌 같기도 할텐데 소감이 궁금하다. 슈가 : 약간 정리가 된 것 같다. 1년 8~9개월 정도 하면서 학교 3부작을 할 때 크게 정리가 안 됐다. 정규 앨범을 하며 정리가 되고 졸업이란 느낌 보다는 마무리를 짓고 서로 방향성을 정리하고 나아갈 수 있는 계기가 됐다. 지민 : 팀적으로 학교 3부작을 하고 정리를 하며 조금 성장을 하지 않았나 싶다. 분위기나 여러 면에서. 특히 무대 위에서 공연하는 모습이 성장한 것 같다.

Q. 랩몬스터는 최근 워렌지와 콜라보레이션을 해 화제가 됐다. 어땠나. 랩몬스터 : 다른 작업들과 크게 다를 바 없는 작업이었다. 특별했던 것은 영상 촬영을 했던 것이다. 특히 원래 그 뿌리에 있던 분의 곡을 받는다는 의미 자체가 특별했다.

Q. 타이거JK가 랩몬스터와 MFBTY 앨범에 함께 하며 칭찬도 했고 윤미래와 너무 친해 질투도 난다고 했다. 랩몬스터 : 하하. 괜히 그러시는 거다. 작업을 할 때 곡도 골라달라 하셨는데 “제 귀에는 별로다”고 솔직하게 말하면 잘 귀담하주셔서 신기했다. 곡의 주인이나 프로듀서가 요구하는 것이 있는데도 타이거JK 선배님은 그런 것이 없었다. “너 하고 싶은 대로 하고 좋게만 해”라고 하시는 점이 신선했다. 함께 작업하고 선배님의 작업 모습을 보며 나도 그렇게 해도 재밌을 것 같다고 생각했다.

Q. 방탄소년단은 일본에서 타워레코드 주간 1위도 하고 단독 콘서트도 마치는 등 성적이 좋다. 차세대 한류주자라는 수식어를 받고 있다. 랩몬스터 : 좋습니다!! 많이 붙여주세요. 하하. 부담스럽지 않고 오히려 그에 걸맞게 열심히 하면 된다고 생각한다.

Q. 한국과 일본 양국에서 인기가 많은데 양국 팬의 차이가 있는지 궁금하다. 슈가 : 아무래도 우리가 양국을 왔다 갔다 하며 활동하니 시간이 여유롭지 않았다. 아무래도 팬분들이 우리에게 맞춰주는 활동인데 친절하게 대해주셨다. 진 : 일본 팬분들은 가만히 듣는 것을 좋아하고 한국 팬분들에 비해 조용하다. 물론 일본 팬분들도 소리를 지르고 호응하지만 한국 팬분들보다 조용히 듣는 것을 좋아하신다. 랩몬스터 : 일본 팬분들에게는 무언가 규칙이 있는 것 같다. 라이브를 시작하면 일어난다. 보이지 않는 룰이 있는 느낌이었다. 한국 공연은 그런 것보다 다 같이 노는 느낌이었다.

Q. 방탄소년단의 취미도 궁금하다. 슈가 : 영화 다시보기도 하고 게임하는 친구도 있고 되게 시끄럽게 떠든다. 우리의 수다를 듣고 있으면 재밌다. 잘 맞는 일곱명이다. 주제가 되게 쓸 데 없는 내용인데 투닥거릴 때도 있다. 하하. 얼마 전에 이사를 갔는데 새 집에 테이블이 있다. 테이블이 생기고 말이 더 많아졌다. 얼마 전에는 세시간 동안 수다를 떨었지…? (일동 : 맞아.)

Q. 룸메이트가 어떻게 나눠졌는가. 진 : 세 개로 나눠졌는데 일단 나와 슈가, 랩몬스터와 정국, 뷔 제이홉 지민이 함께 쓴다. 우리 방은 조용한 분위긴데 막내들 방은 시끄럽다. 지민 : 요즘 계속 우리 방으로 온다. 네명 방을 쓰는 느낌이다. 랩몬스터 : 나는 혼자 쓰는 느낌이다. 좋다… 뷔 : 자야하는데 자꾸 게임하자고 온다.

Q. 지금 시험을 보고 있는 정국이에게 한 마디를 전한다면. 랩몬스터 : 정국아 그 방으로 이사해라. 지민, 뷔, 제이홉 : 정국아 오지 마라. 시험 잘 치고 있겠구나. 우리 방에서 시끄럽게 굴지 마렴. 빨래 건조대도 좀 넣어놓고. 하하하.

Q. 이제 데뷔 3년차다. 후배도 많아졌겠다. 지민 : 으엇. 아직도 후배라는 단어가 어색하다. 그냥 후배라는 것을 생각하지 않고 인사해주시면 좋겠다. 안녕하세요!!! 슈가 : 아직 어색하다. 먼저 다가와 주는 것 좋아한다. 다른 분들이 말을 걸어주면 우리끼리 “누가 말 걸었대!”하면서 좋아한다. 어렵게 생각하지 않았으면 좋겠다. 뷔 : 난 낯을 별로 안 가려서 말도 주고받고 얘기를 잘 하는 편이다. 그런데 멤버들과 같이 있으면 나도 조용히 해야 할 것 같다.

Q. 방탄소년단이 가장 친한 그룹은 누구인가. 뷔 : 그룹으로는 없다. 하하. 친한 그룹이 있었으면 좋겠다. 다른 그룹은 친한 그룹도 있고 우리도 발전해야 할 것 같다. 일단 우리는 대기실 밖을 잘 안 나간다. 대기실 밖에서 친구를 사귀는 것 같던데. 우리는 일단 잔다… 하하. 스케줄이 많아서 일단 자야한다. 하하. 랩몬스터 : 최근에 JTBC ‘뇌섹시대-문제적 남자’ 지인특집에 갓세븐 잭슨이 나와 줘서 고마웠다. 만약에 안됐으면 여동생이 나오는 것도 진지하게 생각했다. 잭슨은 가장 불편하지 않게 대화할 수 있는 친구다.

Q. ‘뇌섹시대-문제적 남자’ 이야기가 나왔는데 이 프로그램에 나오며 랩몬스터가 ‘뇌섹남’으로 화제가 됐다. 랩몬스터 : 관심 받는 것은 좋다. 연예인으로 관심을 많이 받은 것 자체는 정말 좋은 일 아닌가. 뇌가 섹시한 것은 아니지만 좋은 것으로 관심 받으니 좋다. 사실 평소 모습은 다르다. 많이 덜렁대고 무관심한 타입이다. 실수도 많고 잊어버리는 것도 많고 허술한 면이 많이 보이는데 TV에서는 빈틈없는 것처럼 나오더라. 하하. 앉아서 말만 하니까 그렇다. 움직이면 안된다.

Q. ‘뇌섹남’이 된 랩몬스터를 본 멤버들의 느낌은 어떤가. 지민 : 자랑스럽다! 형이 나가고 난 뒤 친구들이 연락와서는 “지민아~ 느그형 똑똑하다!”면서 남자애들이 좋아한다. 슈가 : 보고 있는데 정말 신기하다. 히히. 랩몬스터 : 나에겐 신기한 프로다. 부담이 많이 된다. 특히 앞으로 지인 분들이 많이 나오는데 이장원 형 지인은 유희열 선배님처럼 서울대 출신이라 하시더라. 이런 분들도 부담스러워 하신다고 들었다.

Q. 방탄소년단 스스로에게 한 마디씩 한다면. 진 : 굉장히 바쁘고 그런 삶을 살고 있지만 그 속에서 언제까지나 여유로움을 잃지 않고 편안하게 살았으면 좋겠어. 랩몬스터 : 요즘 되게 드는 생각인데 항상 조급하기만 해서 넉넉한 마음을 가지고 살고 싶었다. 좀 더 넉넉한 마음으로. 남들이 말하는 성공의 기준에 있어서 여러 가지를 해보고 싶다. 하지만 그런 것에 너무 얽매이고 싶지는 않다. 마음이라도 넉넉하게! 슈가 : 10대 후반부터 지금까지 일만 하면서 산 것 같다. 주위를 둘러 보지 않고 일만 하면서 눈 앞에 보이는 것만 하기 바빴는데 주위를 돌아보기도 하고 일 이외의 것들을 시도해봤으면 좋겠다. 취미나 운동도 하고. 제이홉 : 홉아, 너는 지금 잘 하고 있다. 자만하지 말고 조급해하지 말고 지금 이대로만 성장해다오. 지민 : 성격 상 이루고 싶은 것에 대해 조급해 하지 않을 수 없다. 이루고 싶은 것을 이루고 스스로가 즐거워했으면 좋겠다. 뷔 : 내겐 좌우명이 있다. 아버지께서 말씀하신 건데 ‘그게 뭐라고’다. 여러 의미가 담겨 있다. 스트레스를 받고 힘들고 짜증나고 하기 싫은 순간이 많이 찾아온다. 그 때마다 ‘그게 뭐라고’ 라고 생각하면 아무 것도 아닌 일이 된다. 꾹 참고 견뎌내면 더 좋은 일이 찾아올 수 있는 말이다. 아버지께서 내 뇌에 강렬하게 박아주셔서 항상 힘들면 생각난다. 그걸 항상 잊지 않았으면 좋겠다.

It’s youth because it’s beautiful (Interview ②)

This album shows the growth of BTS maturing from boys to seven men. The past albums showcased the dreams, happiness, and love harbored by teens in a “three-part school series.” Having graduated from this series, BTS is stepping one foot closer to ‘youth.’ In unraveling their stories of youth, their musicality spectrum has also broadened with the vocal line joining the rapper line in song compositions also. Having shown their growth through ‘Blooming Youth,’ we wonder what BTS thinks in spending their youth in this ambivalent moment of beauty and anxiousness. Also, due to his school exams, the youngest member Jungkook could not participate in this interview.

Q: What is ‘youth’ for the members of BTS?

Jin: I think youth is considered the time where you shine the most in life. You can think of youth as the main menu. You won’t know that it’s the most beautiful and delicious part of life then. I guess this would consider me as going through my youth too then?

Jimin: Youth… hrm, I’m not sure yet haha.

J-Hope: I think as time passes, the moments you look back on are the most beautiful.

Suga: I think I’ll know with more time.

V: I think I’ll know better when I’m a little older and look back on it.

Rap Monster: I’m not sure yet. I’m not even sure it’s even within my vicinity, to which I question if that would even be considered youth. I think I imagine it to be an animal haha.

Q: They say to make a bucket list before your youth ends so I’m curious as to if this applies for the members of BTS also.

Suga: I want to travel in New York by myself. I want to go often alone. Since we’re always traveling as seven, I think time alone is often needed. If I had the chance, I would want to go traveling by myself in New York for a week. There’s a lot to see and eat.

Jin: For me, I want to go skydiving. My older brother traveled to Australia alone when he was my age and I received a video of him bragging to me about how he went skydiving. He told me that the older you get, it gets harder to do things like that so he said that you should experience the most scariest experiences in your youth.

J-Hope: When you think of youth, you think of burning love. I want to experience burning love with our beautiful fans (Everyone: Wow, daebak haha).

V: I want to go traveling around the world with my family. We’ll go together!

Jimin: I want to go on vacation. I have this fantasy about vacations and I want to go on one, whether it’s by myself or with others.

Q: Have you ever went on vacation with the members non-work related?

Jimin: Not yet. I think we went to an amusement park once as trainees? Haha.

Suga: I hope we can rent a cabin in Kyungkido for an MT. If we were to go together, guaranteed we’ll eat meat for all three meals haha (Everyone: I think while we cook meat, Suga will be in the room saving his energy).

Q: You’ve completed your three-part school series. It must feel like you graduated.

Suga: I feel like we’re more organized. For the year and 8-9 months, we weren’t very organized during the three-part school series. While working on our official album, I felt like we were more organized and rather than feeling like we graduated, I felt like we completed something and found direction to where we can head towards.

Jimin: I think as a team, through the three-part school series, we were able to become more organized and matured in areas such as aura. Especially when we perform on stage, I think we grew a lot in this aspect.

Q: Rap Monster recently garnered a lot of attention for collaborating with Warren G. How was it?

Rap Monster: It wasn’t any different from the other times of producing with the exception that I did a video shoot. I think receiving a song that was in the roots of someone itself is meaningful.

Q: You also participated with Tiger JK for MFBTY’s album and earned a lot of compliments. I heard he was jealous because of how close you were with Yoon Mirae.

Rap Monster: Haha he’s just saying that. While working together, he asked for me to choose the song and if I told him in my honest opinion that it wasn’t that appealing to me, he’d take my opinions into consideration. Although there are requests from the owner or producers of the song, to senior Tiger JK, rules like that don’t exist to him. “Do what you want and make it good” is what he told me, which I found really refreshing. In working with him, I was able to see how he produces and I think I would have fun if I did it that way also.

Q: BTS achieved good results by placing 1st on Tower Records’ weekly chart and having successfully finished a solo concert in Japan. You’re coining the title of the “new age Hallyu candidate.”

Rap Monster: I like it!! Keep giving us more titles haha. It’s not pressuring to us, as long as we live to the title by working hard for it.

Q: You’re very popular in both Korea and Japan. Are there differences between the fans of the two counties?

Suga: Because we travel between both countries, there’s not a lot of leisure time for us but our fans work around our schedules and always greet us.

Jin: Japanese fans enjoy listening quietly in comparison to Korean fans. Of course, Japanese fans also scream and follow along but they tend to prefer listening quietly.

Rap Monster: I think Japanese fans have rules. When we start singing live, they stand up. It’s sort of like an unsaid rule. Meanwhile, with Korean fans, I feel like we’re all having fun together.

Q: I’m curious about your hobbies.

Suga: There are some who enjoy watching the same movies and there are others who like talking loudly. When we talk among ourselves, it’s fun to listen to. We’re seven people who fit very well. The topics are really useless subjects but it’s fun just rambling haha. We moved not too long ago and our new dorm has a table. Having a table opened up a lot more conversations. We had a three-hour talk recently…? (Everyone: That’s right).

Q: Who are your roommates?

Jin: We’re split into three rooms: I’m with Suga, Rap Monster is with Jungkook, and V, J-Hope, and Jimin are all in one room. Our room is quiet but the younger children’s rooms are loud.

Jimin: He keeps coming to our room lately. I feel like we share a room as four people.

Rap Monster: I feel like I’m using a room by myself. It’s nice…

V: We have to sleep but he keeps coming into our room asking us to play games with him.

Q: If you can give a word to Jungkook who’s taking his exam right now.

Rap Monster: Jungkook, move into the other room.

Jimin, V, & J-Hope: Don’t move in here, Jungkook. You must be doing well in your exam now. Don’t be loud in our room. Also, put away the laundry rack hahaha.

Q: Now you’re 3 years into your debut. There must be a lot of juniors for you now.

Jimin: Agh I still find the term ‘juniors’ awkward. I don’t think of them as juniors and just wish that they say hi. Hello!!!

Suga: It’s awkward for us right now. I do like that they approach us first. When they initiate the conversation first, we get excited among ourselves and talk about who talked to us first. I hope they don’t find us difficult to talk to.

V: I’m not really shy so I’m pretty good at holding conversations with others. But I feel like if I was with the other members, I’d feel like I’d have to stay quiet too.

Q: Who is the closest group to BTS?

V: We don’t have any that are groups haha. We wish we had a group we were close to. Other groups have close groups of friends and I think we need to work on this. First off, we don’t really go outside of our waiting room. I think you have to make friends outside the waiting room but we sleep… haha. Because we have a lot of schedules, we have to sleep haha.

Rap Monster: I invited Jackson from GOT7 as a guest for the friend special on JTBC ‘Sexy Brain Generation - Problematic Men’ and I was thankful he did. If he didn’t, I would have seriously contemplated on bringing my younger sister to the show. Jackson is a friend that I can have a conversation comfortably with.

Q: Speaking of ‘Problematic Men,’ you’ve garnered a lot of attention for earning the title of a ‘man of a sexy brain’ while being on the program.

Rap Monster: It’s good to receive attention as it’s a part of the job for a celebrity but it’s not that my brain is sexy, however I do like the attention. Honestly, my image is really different from how it’s reflected on the show. I’m a klutz and tend to be careless. I make a lot of mistakes and lose a lot of things. I tend to show a clumsier side more but it appears on TV that I have a flawless image haha. I think it has to do with me just sitting and talking - I can’t move around or else.

Q: What do the other members think of Rap Monster’s new-found title?

Jimin: I’m proud of him! After he went on the show, my friends would tell me, “Jimin~ Your hyung is smart!” A lot of guys like him.

Suga: It’s really fascinating seeing him hehe.

Rap Monster: It’s a fascinating show to me. There is a lot of pressure and there will be more guests in the upcoming episodes (for example, Lee Jang Won’s hyung is senior Yoo Hee Yeol since he’s from Seoul University) which adds to it. I heard these guests also think the show is pressuring.

Q: If you can give a piece of advice to yourself?

Jin: I’m living a very busy and fast-paced life but I don’t ever want to lose leisure and I hope that I can live in comfort.

Rap Monster: It’s a thought I’ve had lately and because I’ve always lived impatiently, I want to be able to live now with a little bit more of an open heart. I want to be able to achieve a lot in the success standards of others but also not be tied down to it too much. At least have an open heart!

Suga: I think all I’ve been doing was working since our late teenage years. I didn’t have time to look at my surroundings and was too focused on what was in front of me. I think I should take some time to look around me and try things that aren’t just work-related, whether it’s hobbies or sports.

J-Hope: Hope-ah, you’re doing well right now. Don’t become vain and grow as you are now.

Jimin: You can’t not be impatient when your personality is the type to want to achieve a lot but I hope that I can enjoy things while I achieve these goals.

V: I have a motto that came from my father: “What is that that’s so important.” It has a lot of meaning. We have moments where I’m tired, annoyed, and don’t want to do things. But whenever I think of these words, those things become nothing. If you endure through it, good things will come your way. My father ingrained this into my head so whenever I’m at hardship, I think of these words so I hope we never forget this.
