日本帰ってきた。いろんなことにおっかなびっくり。昨日は到着後にホテル直行して、ちょっとだけ外でウロウロしてたんだけども、暑さに驚く。コンビニや街中で何かのアニメキャラのお菓子や広告をたくさん見るのも驚く。

早速ポケセンでの購入品紹介。ピカチュウパケのメイク落としは昔使ってたから欲しくて買った。でも昨日ドラストで普通のやつ買ってしまったwエーフィのぬいぐるみは想像以上にふわふわでさくらピンクの色味がかわいかったから買ってしまった。ポケモンでこんなふわふわのぬいぐるみおるとは思ってなかった。グレイシアとかもふわふわでかあいかった。ピアスはヒスイゾロアのぐらいしかなかったので仕方なくwでも実際めちゃくちゃクオリティ高い。1200円には見えない感じ。艶消しのシルバーで小ぶりで、キャラ物だけども上品さが感じられる仕様だった。クオリティ高杉。カナダだったら$100ぐらいで売ってるほどのクオリティだと思う。桁違う。ポケピースのお菓子は長蛇の列並んでる時に見つけて衝動買い。ステッカーはマホミルでした。これビックリマンチョコを彷彿とさせる収集欲刺激されるやつやwポケセンじゃなくても買えるっぽいから集めたい。

ちなみ今日は池袋のポケセン行ってきました。サンシャインとかいうところ。東京最大のポケセンかつ、ミライドンがおるらしくていってみたかったの。大阪にはコライドンおるみたいだからたのしみやな。ちなコライドン派です。なんかここ、地下でもモール内でもクーラー効いてなくてわりと暑いのに驚いたんだけども。足をふと触ると、汗で湿ってるのがわかるほど汗かいてた。こんな場所にも汗かくの知らんかったw暑さに強い方��から、私は割と平気なんだけども、ロバートが熱中症になりそうだとうるさくて、思った以上にすぐ座って休む場所を探したがる。東京ではスタバなどのカフェで座る場所見つけるのも大変やのに。

ポケモンのぬいぐるみといえばこういう毛足の短いイメージだった。エーフィのくたくたたったのふわふわさ最高やな…

ちなポケセンでクレセリアレイドやってたわ。すぐ人集まるのがすごい。

何気ない部分も全部ポケモンで統一されててかわいくてよかったなあ。

ガチャガチャでナゾノクサのストラップげっと。早速つけたんだけども、平べったいから指ではさめばスマホグリップ風の落下防止にもなる。スマホグリップは嵩張りそうだけど、これは嵩張らんからいいな。ちなウツボットとサルノリもでたけども、ロバートに譲りました。ロバートはバックパックに両方つけたわ。ウツボットもサルノリもロバートに顔似てる。このクオリティで200円は安いわ。カナダなら一個$10はしてる。

ドラストでコスメも買った。キャンメイクとマジョマジョだらけ。リップはブラウン系。アイライナーはあずきブラウンとかいう美味しそうな色味にしました。フェイスパウダーも凝った和菓子みたいな見た目やし、全部美味しそうな色味で統一。マジョのまつ毛美容液はずっと気になってたから買えて嬉しい。アイシャドウはセザンヌにする予定だったけども、マジョのやつの方が見た目好きすぎてwセザンヌ色々買おうと思ってたのに全然買ってないわw

今は温泉のあるアパホテルに泊まってるから朝晩お風呂入ってるわ。暑いから本当に快適。こんな夏休み中の期間によく予約取れたなとか思う。お盆帰省ともかぶるから、こんな時期に帰ってきたんやろうとか思う。まあロバートは日本のこと知らんから。私に相談なく勝手に予約したしな。9月の方がいいんじゃないかとか思ったけども、まあロバートが行きたがってたし、ロバートの金やし。行くしかないわ。今までの旅行とか全部ロバートが勝手に日付決めて行ってる。まあ私も無職やからいつでも行けるんだけどもねー

意地でも電車で行くのが好きなんだけども、ロバートが熱中症になりそうで辛いとうるさく、どうしてもタクシーで帰りたがったからタクシーでホテルに戻った。わたし意外と時差ぼけ酷くなくて、結構平気です。でも一応夜ぐっすりぐっすり寝るためにしばらくトラベルミン使用予定だけども。

Victreebel, the Moray Nepenthes

The Japanese word for pitcher-plant (specifically Nepenthes) is 靫葛 or 靫蔓 (utsubokazura).

Both ways of writing utsubokazura contain the kanji 靫 (utsubo) which means "quiver", as in quiver for arrows, alluding to the tubular shape of the traps of the more familiar species.

The second kanji, 葛 or 蔓, is linked to plants.

葛 is used to refer to either the arrowroot, or the infamous kudzu.

The second, 蔓, which I feel is the more commonly used kanji, means "vine", and shows up when referring to other vining plants, like sweet potatoes and ivy.

So a literal translation of 靫蔓 would be "quiver vine."

Now, Victreebel's Japanese name is Utsubot, and clearly it's based on a Nepenthes pitcher-plant, so its name would seem to be derived from utsubokazuru.

However, its name,ウツボット,  is not portrayed using kanji, but instead a mix of hiragana and katakana, a phonetic way of spelling its name.

Now, look at the first part of its name, ウツボ, u tsu bo, three katakana. This is how 靫 is spelled phonetically, as can be seen in any Japanese dictionary.

Now, an interesting thing about hiragana is that it is often used for words who lack kanji, or who have kanji that are too obscure or difficult to render.

And do you know what ウツボ commonly used for?

Moray eel! ウツボ is both used to refer to Muraenidae in general and specifically to the Kidako moray.

And I read that some Japanese linguists believe that morays were named ウツボ due to their resemblance to a quiver (靫), in other words a long tubular shape with an opening.

So it's not simply a matter of spelling out Victreebel's name phonetically, there is also a hidden worldplay here.

So Utsobot references not just pitcher-plants, but also moray eels!

This is why it has fangs, and why in the anime it's unusually aggressive.
