{i am the caretaker of souls} Hey guys, looking for a bit of advice here. I've recently been very inspired by a character I saw in a horror movie, and I am pondering adding her to this blog. My issue is that I would love to add some things to her as far as abilities, background, and motivations... and also take some away. I have other inspirations I could combine with her to make an even more interesting character, and I also might want to remove some things about her that could be intensely triggering to users on here (yes even more so than the ones I have right now). So the decision is... do I play her as-is from canon, but not fully run with my inspiration as I'd like to and really risk bothering people with how triggering she might be... or do I run with it, change her up, and then... what do I call her? She would be too different from canon to merely say canon divergent, yet not my original character so I can't call her an OC either. Has anyone else ever altered a canon so much that it was like an OC, and if so, how did you handle it? Is it better not to change canons so much that they might be unrecognizable, or the flip side, to borrow the core concept of a canon character as a base for an OC? I would love to make her a Marvel OC, actually, but... it just seems wrong, like I'm stealing someone else's character design.

I keep flip-flopping on what I want to do, so any advice would be helpful. She's from a movie with essentially no fandom on here that I can see, so my chances of irritating other people rping from that movie are pretty much zero. Even so, I hesitate to lift a base character and then change it into my own, it just feels wrong. But I'm so inspired... Argh!

excuse the rather shitty graphic, i churned it out before class. i wanted to do something with an octopus ( because i’m that guy ), but i got kicked in the shin by schoolwork and neglected to find one i could work with. my bad, my bad.

but! the important thing isn’t my budget image, it’s the fact that i’ve had bodhi for over a month now and i swear, i’m in love with this fandom. from rogue one players to originals to prequels to the animations: you guys are amazing. i haven’t been this excited for a fandom in a long time. i don’t know if star wars just attracts the kinna writers i click with and admire or what but you guys are 👌👌👌👌👌. however, i wanted to use this mushy-gushy holiday to be sappy and show a little appreciation to the people who have really made this blog something i cherish.

i wish i could write my undying love for everyone i adore, but i doubt i could do that a) before class and b) within the average human lifespan. so these are the folks that i either talk to a lot ooc, write a lot with, or just make me really, really happy by just existing. you’re the friends that send me things, talk to me about nonsense, get real with me, and are just an all around treat. even if i don’t know you very well ( yet ) you are have made bodhi an experience i won’t ever forget and our talks that have me drabbling about this shadow-jumper pilot on the back of my homework.

@bretttal + all your baes - YO!!!!! we’ve been friends/saltmates/prosebros for how long now? two years now? but like, it also feels like forever, like that kind of kinship you got with someone who just weaves in seamlessly with your life and mind like damn, son. the fact that we can be so dank levels of emo and crack at the same time with each other but then get so brutally honest and real the very next sentence. we don’t shy from anything and we express ourselves openly but respect when the other wants to be quiet with details. and the fact that our passions overlap: linguistics, culture, politics, and the various aspects of humanity. like, to have someone that i can talk about those things with, who is as passionate about strengths and tragedies of the human mind is such a sacred thing to me. like, to say the ideas we come up with for our muses ( especially now with bodhi in the picture ) are controversial to the mainstream mind is an understatement, i don’t know how many others would dare to tread where you and i go. so, i am so fortunate to have you as a friend and ally, especially with the world the way it is. because ( at the risk of sounding like a ball of cheese ) you, my dear friend, are the kinna soul that gives me hope, the kinna person i know i can trust with the future.

you also cry about rogue one and horror movies and xenomorphs with me. a lot. bless u.

@leadkiss + all your baes - okay, okay, i know. we haven’t interacted on this blog yet but idgaf, you’re a pillar wherever i go. we have so much history, the relationships and plots we craft together make dark souls look like a putt-putt game. we are lovecraftian horrors, we make the tragedies of old look like child’s play and the darkest of apocalypses feel like sunshine. and don’t know many people i can be brave, to be honest and open about real life, and certainly i don’t know many people i’m on the same wavelength with. and i know, our approaches and situations often clash...a lot *heart hands* i wouldn’t trade it for the world. your words are precious to me, whether written or spoken. so idk when we’ll write with each other on our current blogs, i do hope soon but until then, i’m more than happy to just gush at each other in skype about our baes past and present and, lbr, future.

oh man sorry for vanishing. school decided to be a thing. wasn’t expecting the workload i got. but i’ve managed to scrap together some freetime right now so gonna get to some of the older things i owe.

can i just take a moment to express my love and appreciate for the important that is jyn erso? like, of course not every review will be spectacular and of course not everyone is gonna to like every single character. but i feel like the people who really drag jyn are missing something very core to her character.

i feel like the reviews and tumblr posts annoyed with jyn expected to go to rogue one and watch a movie about a white savior, not white behavior. they say her political apathy was pathetic --- even harmful to the representation of ( white ) women. but what they don’t realize ( or do and that’s why they don’t like her ) is that jyn represents them every time they think or say “not my problem” to someone who isn’t cis and white. like, the number of times i’ve had the real world equivalent of “it’s not a problem if you don’t look up” flung in my face is immeasurable.

some of her detractors wanted her to be perfect from the beginning. to be this badass woman who has a vague enough personality for them to insert themselves and a moral compass that always makes her right from the start. they wanted jyn to make them feel good, not reflect upon uncomfortable.

especially since jyn is expendable. cassian makes it real damn clear in the book that his mission is unhindered if she dies. if jyn died at any point after delivering her father’s message, the mission would not have been compromised. more difficult? heck yes. but impossible? not at all. so jyn isn’t “the only one who can save us” type of hero. she’s a hero by choice. i think after jedha she realized that she can’t exist outside of existence. that not looking up only works until the ground is literally destroyed beneath your feet. that her apathy can only shield her for so long. and i think that shield is something a lot of audience members, especially white audience members, share with her. and they don’t like thinking about it.

rogue one wasn’t the feel good star wars movie a lot of people were expecting. and its leading lady wasn’t the feel good self insert they wanted. jyn is the story of how inaction is still action. and that heroism is not a birthright, it’s earned.

i don’t know, maybe it’s a mix of reading this post and the inauguration that i needed to express my feely feels for jyn. because goddamn it, i wish the world had more brave baes like her around so maybe i wouldn’t be so scared.
