"When hinges creak in doorless chambers, and strange and frightening sounds echo through the halls. Whenever candlelights flicker where the air is deathly still — that is the time when ghosts are present, practicing their terror with ghoulish delight!"
"Welcome, foolish mortals, to the Haunted Mansion. I am your host, your ghost host. Kindly step all the way in, please, and make room for everyone. There’s no turning back now. Our tour begins here in this gallery, where you see paintings of some of our guests as they appeared in their corruptible, mortal state."
"Your cadaverous pallor betrays an aura of foreboding, almost as though you sense a disquieting metamorphosis."
"Is this haunted room actually stretching? Or is it your imagination — hmm?"
"And consider this dismaying observation: this chamber has no windows and no doors… which offers you this chilling challenge: to find a way out!"
"Of course, there’s always my way."
"Oh, I didn’t mean to frighten you prematurely. The real chills come later. Now, as they say, 'look alive,' and we’ll continue our little tour. And let’s all stay together, please."
"There are several prominent ghosts who have retired here from creepy old crypts all over the world. Actually, we have 999 happy haunts here — but there’s room for 1,000. Any volunteers?"
"If you insist on lagging behind, you may not need to volunteer."
"And now, a carriage approaches to take you into the boundless realm of the supernatural. Take your loved ones by the hand, please, and kindly watch your step. Oh yes, and no flash pictures, please. We spirits are frightfully sensitive to bright lights."
"Do not pull down on the safety bar, please. I will lower it for you. And heed this warning: the spirits will materialize only if you remain safely seated with your hands, arms, feet, and legs inside. And watch your children, please."
"We find it delightfully unlivable here in this ghostly retreat. Every room has wall-to-wall creeps and hot and cold running chills. Shhh, listen!"
"Let me out, let me out of here!"
"Serpents and spiders, tail of a rat, call in the spirits, wherever they’re at!"
"Rap on a table — it’s time to respond. Send us a message from somewhere beyond…"
"Goblins and ghoulies from last Halloween, awaken the spirits with your tambourine!"
"Creepies and crawlies, toads in a pond, let there be music from regions beyond!"
"Wizards and witches, wherever you dwell, give us a hint by ringing a bell!"
"The happy haunts have received your sympathetic vibrations and are beginning to materialize."

"In sickness and in… wealth."
"You may now kiss the bride."
"We’ll live happily ever after."
"Till death do us part."
"Here comes the bride."
"As long as we both shall live."
"For better or for… worse."
"I do. I did."
"When the crypt doors creak and the tombstones quake, spooks come out for a swinging wake."
"Happy haunts materialize and begin to vocalize."
"Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize!"
"Now, don’t close your eyes and don’t try to hide, for a silly spook may sit by your side."
"Shrouded in a daft disguise, they pretend to terrorize. Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize!"
"As the moon climbs high o’er the dead oak tree, spooks arrive for the midnight spree."
"Creepy creeps with eerie eyes start to shriek and harmonize. Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize!"
"When you hear the knell of a requiem bell, weird glows gleam where spirits dwell."
"Restless bones etherealize, rise as spooks of every size!"
"Ah, there you are! And just in time… there’s a little matter I forgot to mention — beware of hitchhiking ghosts!"
"They have selected you to fill our quota, and they’ll haunt you until you return! Now I will raise the safety bar, and a ghost will follow you home!"
"If you would like to join our jamboree, there’s a simple rule that’s compulsory. Mortals pay a token fee; rest in peace, the haunting’s free."
"So hurry back, we would like your company."
"Hurry back! Hurry back! Be sure to bring your death certificate… if you decide to join us. Make final arrangements now!"
"We’ve been dying to have you…"

GRIM GRINNING GHOSTS LYRICS
“When the crypt doors creak
And the tombstones quake
Spooks come out for a swinging wake
Happy haunts materialize
And begin to vocalize
Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize
Now don't close your eyes
And don't try to hide
Or a silly spook may sit by your side
Shrouded in a daft disguise
They pretend to terrorize
Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize
As the moon climbs high o'er the dead oak tree
Spooks arrive for the midnight spree
Creepy creeps with eerie eyes
Start to shriek and harmonize
Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize
When you hear the knell of a requiem bell
Weird glows gleam where spirits dwell
Restless bones etherealize
Rise as spooks of every size
When the crypt doors creak
And the tombstones quake
Spooks come out for a swinging wake
Happy haunts materialize
And begin to vocalize
Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize
Now don't close your eyes
And don't try to hide
Or a silly spook may sit by your side
Shrouded in a daft disguise
They pretend to terrorize
Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize
As the moon climbs high o'er the dead oak tree
Spooks arrive for the midnight spree
Creepy creeps with eerie eyes
Start to shriek and harmonize
Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize
When you hear the knell of a requiem bell
Weird glows gleam where spirits dwell
Restless bones etherealize
Rise as spooks of every size
When the crypt doors creak
And the tombstones quake
Spooks come out for a swinging wake
Happy haunts materialize

Welcome, Foolish Mortals
Fifty years ago today, Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion opened to the public. It’s seen a lot of changes over the years, and three new incarnations, at Walt Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland, and (as Phantom Manor) Disneyland Paris. But the spirit of the place - as it were - remains the same: a delightfully unlivable retirement home for 999 happy haunts, with wall to wall creeps, hot and cold running chills, and oh, room for a thousand...any volunteers? Mwah ha ha ha.
Be sure to bring your death certificate, should you decide to join us. Final arrangements may be made at the end of your tour.
I don’t know if I can properly explain why I love this ride so - why I was always drawn to the macabre, even as it scared me to the point where my parents banned ghost stories from the house just so I’d get some sleep. The first few times I rode through, as a child, I clung to my mother and jumped and shrieked in terror as ghouls popped up from behind trunks and gravestones with high-pitched screams. Despite my fear, I wanted nothing more than to ride it again and again, and now, as an adult, I am thoroughly charmed on every ride. One time, when a bout of depression took me on a Disney trip, I even rode it three or four times in a row, crying in the dark, until it had cheered me enough to go do something else.
Perhaps my love for the Haunted Mansion is nothing more than this: though the spirits within enjoy their frights, it’s all in good fun. (Well. Mostly. I wouldn’t trust Constance up in the attic.) Death is not something to be feared, but the next great adventure after a hopefully long life - while some of the ghosts clearly died prematurely, many are distinctly aged. All of them are happy, occupying their endless afterlife with swinging wakes and graveyard revels. The spirits of the Haunted Mansion, with one notable exception, are friends, the sort of friends who don’t judge you for loving the dark things, who join you in your delight of ghost stories around the campfire and horror movies in darkened theaters. In the darkness, there is not only terror, but joy, delight, kindness, and even a sort of comfort.
The Haunted Mansion has always walked a strange sort of tightrope, suspended between horror and humor - but then those things often go hand in hand. There are moments of laughter in many of the best horror movies, events that would ordinarily be horrifying in many of the best comedies. And it is because of this balance, I think, that the Mansion works. That it has endured for fifty years and shall, I hope, endure as long as there are people to maintain it.
And so, on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary, I wish the Haunted Mansion an unhappy birthday, and many unhappy returns. The spirits are gathering even now for a swinging wake - I’m only sorry I can’t make it out to Disneyland to join them. But it’s only a couple months until I go to Disney World, so I’ll see them by and by.

Ryan wants to ask some questions! What is your favorite Pokémon? How did you die? What year did you die? Will you ever come to Florida?
“Well now, let’s see here...I died June 5th, 1815, from my head being cut off,” Randall replied, stroking his chin before giving a little smile as he glanced to his hatbox, head appearing in it briefly as he finished with a chuckle, “As I’m sure you could guess, lad.”
Head returning to his shoulders, he leaned back and thought about the next question, saying with a smile, “I’d like to go down to Florida someday, visit our other Mansion-I’ve never been down there, but I hear it’s a delightfully unlivable place, filled with wall-to-wall creeps, and hot and cold running chills...”
He then furrowed his brow, asking, “Pokemon...? Oh, that little game I see the mortal lads and lassies playing around the park, yes, I know that one! I don’t know if I have a favorite though...though I did see that little Ghost type, the one that dresses up like the game’s mousy mascot, what’s it’s name...Mimic-something? Hmm...Mimikyu, was that it? Yes, I think that was it-I quite like that one.”

Dear sir, I am a regular visitor to your delightfully unlivable abode. Or, rather, I would like to be so much more regular. Currently I am paying the Mansion a visit about once a month. When last I visited, it was a particularly chilly night, and Master Gracey himself asked one of the maids outside to be sure I was given a hot drink, free of charge and on his favor. I miss it there, and I cannot wait to visit again. I do hope you show your face in the sunshine state soon. Regards, G.X.R.
“My, my! Well, I’m always happy to hear from satisfied customers. Yes, Dorian can be quite caring when he’s not absorbed with his own greatness. Which reminds me — I trust my act was the highlight of the visit, hm?”

This Month in Disney Parks History: August
Welcome back to another edition of Disney Parks History! I can’t believe we’re on the topic of August already. Did summer fly by for everyone else too? I bet some of you are pretty excited to send those kiddos back to school. Hopefully you’re excited to read some interesting tidbits about Disney as well! We’ve got the opening of some classic attractions, a retired wizard, and much more, so let’s get started.
© Disney
1955: A 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea exhibit opened at Disneyland, allowing guests to tour original sets from the film. One section displayed the movie’s pipe organ, which would eventually find a permanent home in the ballroom of Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion.
1955: Now a Disney classic, Disneyland’s Dumbo the Flying Elephant attraction premiered in Fantasyland a month after the park’s official opening.
1961: Flying Saucers, a futuristic version of bumper cars, opened in Disneyland. Guests sat in individual spacecrafts and a current of air from the ground lifted them just enough to allow them to move their flying saucer by leaning side to side (think life-sized air hockey table). Though the attraction closed after five years, it would later become the inspiration for Disney California Adventure’s Luigi’s Flying Tires. Check out Disney’s video of opening day here.
1969: Disneyland welcomed the first foolish mortals to the Haunted Mansion 49 years ago. Though it opened after Walt’s death, he knew from the early planning phase of Disneyland that he wanted a haunted house attraction. After years of delays, redesigns, and a disagreement over whether the attraction should be funny or scary, the attraction premiered to rave reviews.
1989: Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular!, now the oldest attraction at Hollywood Studios, opened. The show recreates iconic scenes from the first Indiana Jones film, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and gives guests a behind the scenes look at stunts and special effects.
1997: The Mexican and Southwestern U.S. themed Coronado Springs Resort, featuring a 46-foot-tall Mayan pyramid as the centerpiece of its pool, opened in August 1997. Guests can enjoy three separate themed areas – the casitas, cabanas, and ranchos sections, and a new tower building under construction is expected to be complete in 2019.
1999: Disney Wonder, the second ship to join the Disney Cruise Line fleet, set sail on its maiden voyage. The ship has close to 900 staterooms and holds over 2,700 passengers plus a crew of 950.
2006: After over a decade of challenging guests to pull the sword from the stone, Merlin retired. Though the ceremony is no longer performed, the Sword in the Stone can still be found in front of Prince Charming Regal Carrousel in Magic Kingdom for a great photo opportunity.
2009: Bay Lake Tower opened. It became the ninth Disney Vacation Club resort and features a rooftop lounge, Top of the World Lounge, that offers spectacular views of Magic Kingdom fireworks.
2009: As part of Haunted Mansion’s 40th celebration in Disneyland, a contest gave one lucky family the opportunity to spend a night in the attraction. Some grim grinning ghosts came out to socialize with the family, and they were visited by the hitchhiking ghosts. Their delightfully unlivable ghostly retreat even included a dessert buffet.
2010: Via Napoli held its Grand Opening, featuring Mickey and Minnie dressed in special Italian attire. Years later, it’s still ranked as our top pick for pizza at Walt Disney World.
2011: Aulani, A Disney Resort and Spa opened in Hawaii. The grand opening ceremony would take place a month later, and an expansion project was completed in 2013. It wasn’t always smooth sailing though. A few months prior to the opening, Disney realized that the original annual dues for DVC members weren’t high enough to adequately cover the expenses of maintaining the resort. Oops!
2011: Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room reopened after months of refurbishment. The attraction, which had been given an ‘Under New Management’ overlay back in 1998, was converted back to a version similar to the original attraction, Tropical Serenade.
2012: The My Disney Experience mobile app released, giving guests easy access to park maps, hours, wait times, and dining reservations as well as a way to test out the then-developing FastPass+ system.
2015: The D23 Expo featured announcements for exciting new lands, including Toy Story Land at Hollywood Studios and Star Wars themed lands for both Walt Disney World and Disneyland.
2017: One year ago this month, we said goodbye to The Great Movie Ride and The Universe of Energy featuring Ellen’s Energy Adventure, both of which were closed to make way for new attractions.
That’s all for this month! Let us know if we touched on any of your favorite memories in the comments below.

Originally planned to be part of the “Mickey Mouse Park” project in Burbank, The Haunted House idea was one of the original ideas that made its way south to Anaheim when Walt Disney began planning out DISNEYLAND. The house was originally supposed to be a stereotypically rundown shanty located down a windy path that would branch off from Main Street. That plan was scrapped after budgetary constraints and technology limitations prevented the attraction from being built the way Walt Disney envisioned.
The attraction was put on the back burner after Walt visited the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California, 400 miles north of his Magic Kingdom. The house had been built by Sarah Winchester, who designed the sprawling house as a way to confuse the spirits of the dead people who had been killed by her husband’s rifles. The stately Mansion is immaculately maintained, yet is still considered to be one of the most haunted buildings in the country. Mr. Disney had always hated the idea of building a ramshackle building and the Winchester mansion convinced him that he could build a nice looking yet ominous mansion for DISNEYLAND.
By this time, the potential spot for the Haunted attraction was moved from an area near Main Street to a spot across the riverbend from Frontierland. The new spot had been sparsely landscapes and used as a nice little park where people could take a stroll or sit on one of the many benches and enjoy a snack. Walt Disney had an affinity for the city of New Orleans and had planned for the area to become an area themed after the city. In the early 1960’s, DISNEYLAND announced that it would build a New Orleans themed area complete with a pirate museum and a haunted house. Actual construction, however, would still be a long ways off.
