A Surprise Birthday Message

character(s): kaeya x gn!reader warnings: angst, mentions of diluc, mentions of klee, reader is dead synopsis: it's kaeya's birthday, but also the anniversary of your death. he ponders about his day and your long desired promised before receiving a message from none other than you. a/n: not proofread!! i'll definitely try to edit or fix this up later, thank you for reading :)

Many knights and friends had given Kaeya gifts for his birthday, yet he still felt as lonely as ever. It was certainly joyful to encounter his gleeful companions as they handed him a gift, but soon he was lost in thought. It was morning, he was inevitably tired, mentally exhausted even, but he knew that wasn't the source of his sorrow.

After waving goodbye to Jean and the rest of the knights, he took a stroll, stopping by a specific area before bending down.

"Good morning Sweetheart." He smiled sadly, looking at your tombstone. How could he enjoy his birthday if it was the same day you had left him alone in this world? He kneeled next to your grave for a while, mumbling nonsense and gazing off, enjoying your company as well as the silence. Has it been a year already?

"It would be nice if we could watch the sunset on my birthday as you had wished." It was a meaningless thought, but to Kaeya it made him realize that you were really gone.

He pondered for a while before standing up, "I'll see you there, my love." He had finally decided to go to the location where you had desired to watch the sunset together, although he would be alone.

"Happy birthday, Kaeya!" Klee had passed by, watching him as he made his way to his office.

"Thank you, Klee." He smiled, patting her head before she ran off, giggling. He opened his office door, sitting comfortably on his office chair as he placed his legs on the table, zoning off once again. Was it time to finally move on? Could he forget you? Just as he was lost in thought, a notification from his phone caught his attention. A reminder from Jean or a birthday wish from Diluc, he assumed. Yet when he hovered over to see the sender, he stumbled a bit, fumbling to pick up his phone as it read "From y/n"

He stared at the message for a bit before tapping it open, confused and curious, who was sending messages through your phone? It was a video, a thumbnail showing a frame of you smiling which made him feel a little melancholy. Pressing play, he watched attentively as you set up the camera and walked back a bit.

"Hi Kaeya!" You smiled, laughing a bit as you waved. "I just figured out how to send scheduled messages! Cool isn't it?"

He could barely pull himself together, hearing your voice again made him feel something he could not describe, he was longing to hold you in his arms again, he was missing you and it was starting to become unbareable.

"Anyways, happy birthday Kaeya! You better have kept your promise on watching the sunset with me! Oh! While eating cupcakes of course..please." You added, laughing at yourself before waving again. "Oh, I have to go! You're here to take me on a date, or um- younger you..?" You shrugged, "Bye Kaeya, I love you!"

As the video ended he sat there with his phone in his hands, your smile, your voice, your "i love you"s, how could he forget? He smiled while tears hovered on his eyes, threatening to fall. There was no way he could ever love someone as much as he had loved you-no, he still loves you more than anyone.

"What's up with you? Nobody give you birthday gifts?" Diluc walked into his office, holding a batch of cupcakes in his hands. "I would've given you cake, but they ran out.. quite.. unlucky." he stated as he handed one to Kaeya, "Happy birthday, are you going to take one or not?" Kaeya looked up at his brother, then at the cupcake in his hand. He took it while Diluc started talking about something at the Wine Dinery, Kaeya was too busy staring at the cupcake, being reminded of your voice happily telling him of watching the sunset together, while eating cupcakes of course. He would have most definitely kept his end of the promise, but you didn't. In fact, you were unable to fulfill any more memories with him, could he really live without your presense?

"There was- woah, um- are you okay?" Diluc asked

"Huh? Oh.. yeah, why?" Kaeya looked up at his brother, looking at his rather confused and surprised expression.

"You're crying." Diluc stated as Kaeya looked surprised himself, touching his face as tears fell onto his hands. I guess he really can't get over you no matter how hard he tried.
