Itoshi Brothers: U20 Edition
Part 1 to this is here! I explain my basic idealogy for Rin here, so it might be better if you that one first.
The basic tldr is: Rin doesn't see himself as an individual at all, and he doesn't seem to realise it. It's why Sae is pissed and as rude as he is, and it's why Rin feels like he's restricted.
He can be as annoyed about the "Itoshi Sae's little brother" label as he wants, but he hasn't realised he fosters it unconsciously.
Once again, this part is very very nicely covered in @/riririnnnn's post. Please go read their theories linked in Part 1 too!! And the source of this creative bug was @/boinin's work for Rin's Aura-also linked in Part 1.
Tumblr media
This is when the realisation finally happens. He realises that he's being shadowed by Isagi constantly, watched, judged, all on the basis of what people expect of him. Of what he's imposed on himself.
And then there's this infamous panel.
Tumblr media
No, he's not alone. And it's entirely the reason he feels as restricted as he is. Not because he's not alone- but because the second he feels like he isn't, he starts adapting those labels into himself. He needs to be Itoshi Rin if he wants to develop an ego of his own.
Tumblr media
Everyone clap really loudly, okay- really really loudly. This man spends his entire life studying and emulating Sae and it takes him an entire year to realise that he's been doing it and see the problem in it.
Dumbass. Why am I analysing him again?
And this is what triggers his flow state. One of the craziest ones we've seen- why? Not as a flow state separately, no, but because this is what Rin is at this point in time. He may evolve, become a different person at whatever time, but at this point he's keen on finding a sense of self that isn't in relation to anyone else. Note how after the flow state- and the brutal comment Sae makes- he goes right back to "Crushing Sae Itoshi, but destroy Isagi Yoichi first". But now he's still in flow- a true, completely disconnected version of himself that is only influenced by his own thought process.
Tumblr media
And Sae, of course, knows. I mean- it makes sense right? He's the only one who's seen Rin before he started playing football, before he became Itoshi Sae's little brother. When he really was just, Itoshi Rin.
At this point, however, he's still focusing on completely destroying expectations. An antithesis of everything he used to be called, everything he used to be. So his aura shifts to directly contradicting Sae's- it is still not his own.
This is why the unusual water theme comes in so late. It is Rin's, of course it is, but until the NEL/end of U20 he never knew of himself.
I will be skipping over the absolute trainwreck that is the ending of U20- you get it. Sae acknowledges Isagi, affirms just about every single one of Rin's insecurities, and this time repeat cycle. Destroy the target of Sae's attention, Isagi himself.
You know what the most interesting part of this all is? AFTER ALL THIS. He's learned so much, he's grown so much. Don't get me wrong, this younger sibling is learning to be his own person.
But. Then you see him in the current NEL Arc.
Tumblr media
This fucking idiot- I mean. Ahem.
He's still thinking in terms of other people. Of course, now he's learned to separate himself from the equation, thankfully. But he's still not playing for himself. He's not "Itoshi Sae's little brother" anymore, he's the one who will "surpass Itoshi Sae and destroy Isagi".
Nagi asks the very good question of, what comes after that? Rin is no longer someone's shadow, but still thinks in terms of surpassing them, much like Nagi used to think before the Manshine vs BM Match. And this absolute nutcase. Replies.
Tumblr media
You know, he's a stupid guy, but atleast he's honest about his thoughts. Makes it easier for me to analyse him, unlike his emotionally constipated brother.
He's describing it as a baby just born- fitting, because he's trying to find his footing after being label after label in someone else's story. Not that he was doing it intentionally, but it had become subconscious. He hasn't thought about the future, at all, because he can barely understand what he's doing now.
"Number 1? I don't care about that. What I care about is destroying you, Isagi." Well, I've rambled long enough. You get my point now. He's learning!! Like a baby bird learning to fly, very slowly. Hence the newly present water aura. This will become so much more interesting when we learn what happened to Sae in Spain, and if Rin finds out? Well. Maybe we can finally get the resolution I need them to have.
Because, god forbid they have another miscommunication. I will actually lose my mind.
But also, I'm someone who understands Rin on a really deep level because I've had similar experiences with mirroring an older sibling because I had nobody else to turn to for a role model or admire. And I tend to think of myself in terms of other people, too. So this analysis was something that came really naturally to me. I hope it was worth your time.

The Itoshi Brothers: And My Very Late Take On Them. (Part 1)
look, I've had very strong blue lock brainrot for a long time now. Rambled plenty to my dear partner-in-crime about it.
The reason this post exists is because I read almost all of the analysis posts by @/riririnnnn regarding the Itoshi brothers, and now I need to add my own two cents.
In particular, this was inspired by two posts: Rin and Sae by @/riririnnnn Rin's Ego and Aura by @/boinin
The core of this theory/analysis is: What exactly is the core of Rin's character, why it made Sae react the way he did, and why this entire mess exists in the first place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you think about it, from the very beginning Rin has had no basis of ambition or foundation for himself at all. His beginnings were really humble, wherein he just watched Sae play and thought his brother looked amazing as he did it. It was admiration, and the kind of younger sibling energy that makes you want to emulate your older sibling. It isn't just about playing alongside Sae, but it's about being like Sae.
It spurs him to read Sae better because he wants to learn. And eventually, it happens. He's reading a talented player, and he has the same(?) talent within him, so it's no surprise that he shocks just about everyone when he can keep up with Sae.
Tumblr media
This? This is why Rin started playing football. To be like Sae, to play with Sae. Sae, sae, sae, sae- It was never of Rin's own volition. And it won't be, for a very long time.
He learns to emulate Sae, be the player Sae wanted on his team. That requires him to be precise, elegant and efficient. Sae hasn't changed fundamentally as a person even after Spain, the core remains the same. He passes to people worth passing to. And in their old team, nobody was worth passing to except Rin. So it worked out, that Rin kept associating his plays, his dreams, his ambitions, with Sae.
Tumblr media
I think this is why he never had an "aura" of his own- or any sort of foundation of his own, at all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Sae knows this. That is exactly why this is one of the few times we see him genuinely curious (concerned?) about what Rin will do when Sae is gone. When it does have to require him thinking for himself, being his own person.
He's right to be worried.
Tumblr media
Because, as expected, instead of Rin becoming his own person, he takes Sae's playstyle and makes it his own. He's very good at it, mind you. Nobody understood Sae quite like he did, all this time. But it's not Itoshi Rin anymore- it really is, just, Itoshi Sae's little brother.
And he doesn't realise it just yet- but that becomes a trend. From here on out, that is what people will see him as. After all, he's made his playstyle to be viewed as such. Those elegant kicks and precise analytics that Isagi observes the first few times he plays with Rin- they're not completely Rins' at all. They're adapted, taken from Sae. It's why the beginning of the U20 Arc feels like looking at a better, more midfielder focused Rin.
It's always been the other way round.
And so, when Sae comes back four years later, he is understandably disappointed. Nor has he ever been once to mince his words. Rin could never understand- of course he couldn't, he doesn't know what's wrong. He's not letting Sae explain. Sae isn't about to explain, either. They SUCK AT COMMUNICATING, THE PAIR OF IDIOTS.
Rin, if there's one thing you shouldn't have taken from Sae, it was his pathetic style of communication.
(Rin notices how tired and unwell Sae looks- that one's more explored in the post I linked as my inspo. Not getting into that- maybe some other day? If people care enough to listen.) Rin, above all, feels betrayal and shock at the change of Sae's ambition. If Sae changed his dream, and Rin has been emulating his older brother all this time, what happens now?! What is he supposed to do!? There's really no point, then, if he can't play with Sae. The way he's been envisioning for years now. It's brutal, and it's also pathetic because neither of them care to listen to the other speak.
Sae will never understand how Rin's ambitions and connections to other people for his own sense of self work. Rin will never understand what Sae went through and why he changed. He will never know why Sae was so upset with Rin constantly, constantly viewing himself from someone else's lens.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Sae knows.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh, he knows.
But even after that- after ALL THAT, Rin will not think of himself as a separate entity. Nonono, now it's just- defeat Sae, instead of be with Sae. Sae, sae, sae, sae-
After Blue Lock, there's more labels that come in. He's Itoshi Sae's little brother, he's the Number 1 Striker in Blue Lock, he's Isagi's shadow, rival, partner, he's Shidou's foil, counter, the center piece for the Blue Lock 11 Team- (I remind you, again, of how his playstyle and moves are described. Beautiful. Elegant. Perfectly thought out. Now take those adjectives and use them for Sae. Don't they fit better?)
But he's never Rin. Heck, he's never ever ITOSHI Rin. Why would anyone see him as Rin alone? Part 2- Explores U20 and further.

A compilation of things @himi-wiz and I came up with while we were very intensely sharing Stormbringer brainrot.
(Stormbringer spoilers ahead!!)
1. Movies starring Lippmann are now a staple in Chuuya's life.
2. Piano Man had a tendency to play on street piano displays and there would almost always be a crowd gathering around him when he did.
3. Doc's favourite flavour is definitely cherry-methol and so every over the counter medicine is bittersweet!
4. Iceman enjoys popsicles and does craft with the sticks he collects. He had a phase where all his targets would choke on ice cream sticks. Every now and then Chuuya gets one. Chuuya will now only eat that singular flavour. He refuses to elaborate.
5. The motorcycle keys Albatross had have the most obnoxious toy car keychain ever. Chuuya won't change it either. It clashes terribly with the rest of his ensemble. He does not care.

On the first anniversary of the Flags' death, Chuuya spends the day off kilter. He's slow with his work, quieter than ever, and barely present. Dazai notices, and Dazai refuses to work, so he needs someone between the two of them to do the work.
Chuuya has a little pot of lilies sitting on his balcony in his apartment. He got it ages ago, from Lippmann, and he takes care of them, diligently. Dazai sneaks into the balcony and grabs a few from the pot. Five, to be exact.
He drags Chuuya out to their graves, and places a lily on each, one by one. Chuuya stands, surprised.
"There, we've mourned now! Now get back to work, Chibi!!"
This happens the year after, too.
In the first year Dazai isn't around, Chuuya takes lilies up to the grave himself. Except there's already fresh lilies by the grave. Words unsaid remain in the air. "You've mourned now, Chibi. Get back to work."
The first year Dazai visits Odasaku's grave, he does it with a heavy heart. He's ready to simply sit down and let himself drown in reminiscence for some time.
He's shocked to see a lily sitting there, right at the grave. Fresh, as if the person knew exactly when the event had happened. And who would visit on the anniversary of it.
"You've mourned now, mackarel. Go live your life."

First off, thank you so much for adding on and giving me pointers hahah. I'm only a beginner at Physics myself, STEM courses and all that jazz, so my own hypothesis is very questionable, but I'll try my best to add on to you!
The value of g does come from the gravitational constant itself right? In your original theory, I am really intrigued by the fact that he can change the value of G itself, which would explain how he's changing everything else in regards to gravitational force. The reason the term is mainly used for celestial bodies is likely because the mass is so high that with anything else the force is just irrelevant.
Yeah his ability clearly doesn't seem to vary on power over distance (wacky, honestly, how mad his powers are) but the big G is definitely a factor I didn't expand on in this post because you covered it incredibly in your original one so I didn't have much to add on! Mainly, I considered mass because I did also want to try to explain how corruption simply enhances his original power. I can't think of a way to explain the creation of gravitons without changing the mass somehow. Any ideas?
Alright, next points.
Disclaimer, I've never used the rocket equation beyond that one paragraph in my textbook, so I had to look around a bit for this and I'm still not certain I fully understand it. But yes, I do agree that conservation laws must be maintained.
The issue is, in so many displays of bsd, they hardly are. I wouldn't have considered changing the mass otherwise. Putting your theory with G on hold, and my theory of mass on hold as well, let's take situations we've seen many times. He's able to get himself to levitate in the air, or create entire craters in the ground. Even if we venture into the more precision based power uses (manipulating just bullets: see latest episode), how will that work? Conservation laws dictate that energy in = energy out and that forms the basis of most mechanical problem sets.
Honestly, changing mass brings with it a whole host of problems that is pretty concerning, you're right. But the way bsd shows it, it's not like there aren't concerns with using Chuuya's power.
Particle physics is a whole set of theoretical and completely speculative concepts that only really showed up recently, hence the modern physics titles. In terms of quantum mechanics and the like, I think the only equation that will really help us here is E = mc².
But see, the thing is, I agree with every single one of the holes you've pointed out in my theory. I have some ideas regarding using relativity and some more Einsteinian concepts to explain the force of gravity and how it affects the dimensions, but I'm not thorough enough in that field of Physics yet and I don't have the time to research it fully. I would absolutely love to discuss it with you though!
It begs the question however, lets say he does affect the value of G. How far does his control go? How is he able to isolate such a huge change that should apply to whatever masses are in contact with just whatever he's coating in the red glow? Gravitational force needs two different objects or matter for it to work.
And thank you for the correction on the mechanics dependency on mass!
(And even if we could manage to explain Chuuya's mechanics by irl physics, what about Fukuchi? And Nikolai? Honestly those seem like equally interesting fields to explore. Fukuchi is straight up bs I don't even think it's possible to explain away the space time continuum with hand wavey stuff. Nikolai, though-)
And yes. Corruption mechanics involving gravitons are absolutely nuts. I don't even know how to begin to deal with that.
Again, I wonder how similar Verlaine is to all this. Hm.
Tumblr media
Tainted Sorrow, but Physics.
Chuuya has some of the most interesting mechanics in the entire show, because his powers are based on an actual physical phenomenon. That he's warping. I mean sure, we knew it was overpowered, but a deep dive into it shows how stupidly overpowered he actually is.
(Credit to @veni-vedi-perivi for their post here and @scaramint for their physics here! I will be offering an alternative hypothesis which is a little more fictional than the latter.)
Tumblr media
Formulae I'll be cross referring to:
1. F = mg where F is the force, m stands for mass and g stands for gravitational acceleration which is -9.8m/s² for anything close to the Earth's surface.
2. F = GMm/r² . Where M is the attracting object's weight, m is the secondary object, r is the distance between them, and G is the universal gravitational constant.
To further look into this, we'll have to take it step by step. There are a few factors he could be modifying for tainted sorrow to take effect.
First, the typically used explanation in theoretical physics, acceleration. If he's changing the value of "g", it makes sense. Every planet has its own value of gravity, right, and so he's probably just increasing the value of Earths'. Well, in that case, it would work on everything on Earth, and not just whatever is coated with that trademark red glow. Off the table!
According to the second formula, it may be possible that he's changing two other things then. Either the distance between himself (r) and whatever he's applying his powers on (m) or he's changing his own mass (M). And we've seen that the distance between himself and whatever Tainted Sorrow works on doesn't affect the power itself, so that's off the table. It's just a definitive range that his ability has, which I'll assume is a set radius independent of physics.
There's only two explanations left, and both of them refer to changing mass. Something that's inherently supposed to be constant, according to classical physics. So the rest of this post will be fictional physics, hopefully with some credit to it.
Tumblr media
-> Changing the Mass
In classical physics, mass is an inherent property of the body that isn't subject to change whatsoever. In fact, most other mechanics are based on the mass being constant no matter what. What does change, is weight, which is technically a force. (F = mg).
But this is BSD, so let's say he's changing the mass. In this scenario I'll assume the value of "g" is constant for the sake of hypothesis. They're constantly on Earth anyway, so it makes sense. Whether his ability changes on the moon is a whole another post worth of hypothesis.
This means he's changing the inherent property of a body to have a constant mass. This will also explain how he manifests literal gravitons during corruption, because that does require creating virtual mass and/or imaginary mass (I'm not qualified to speak on those topics in depth, but in a section below I'll overview it.)
This change in mass is also an apt explanation for how his ability manifests, because of the way he leaves craters in the ground out of weight. Yes, weight, which is what (F = mg) gives us. It fits, even if it's the wackiest thing imaginable in physics. It also explains how he can change the speed and acceleration of things, since Kinetic energy (½ mv²), gravitational potential energy (mgh) and most mechanics formulae depend on mass.
And so it's the most plausible explanation.
But if he is actually changing the mass, then that opens a whole new box of crazy. But this changing of mass also explains corruption!
Speaking of,
Tumblr media
Corruption.
Putting the Arahabaki shenanigans away for a minute, let's get into the nitty gritty of what exactly Corruption allows Chuuya to do.
Let's say he is actually manipulating mass, and let's say until thus far, this has not impacted his own mass. Well, what if Corruption lets him venture into the world of imaginary mass?
And we now enter quantum physics! Damn it. Didn't think I'd have to dip my toes into this too.
The concept of imaginary mass violates a lot of physics fundamentals. It is of course, only a hypothetical concept, but it makes a lot of modern physics.
If you've ever watched Jujutsu Kaisen, or heard of it, you'd know Gojo Satoru, and by extension about Purple. While that works on mathematical concepts, Chuuya's gravitons are not unlike that. He's essentially creating miniature spheres of imaginary mass that function as little black holes. The only other explanation I can think of is pure fiction.
That's wild.
And if this theory holds water, which it may or may not, that means Chuuya has a hold over all of the mechanics that let physics function on Earth. He has a hold over friction, weight, energy, and basically any sort of motion.
I wonder how wacky Verlaine is in comparison.
Please correct me if I've gone wrong somewhere, and feel free to add on with your own ideas! Once again I'd like to thank the people credited above for inspiring this in the first place. I hope this makes sense lmao-

The bitter truth in the fact that it never mattered how much Gojo Satoru fought, for the humans or for his fellow sorcerers. All it took was a single minute of memories for him to succumb to the gravitational pull of his best friend.
He was dead, wasn't he? Then how is he here? And up until that point he had been exerting himself to the max, running his brain faster than anything else. Yet at that minute, that single minute, all he thought about was old memories, and very scarce wording.
He was rendered incapable of acting, for just long enough.
God damn you, Kenjaku.

As my partner in crime raised, very correctly while watching, did Poe write the memories Fukuchi and Fukuzawa had?? If so, then how?? When?? Did Ranpo just have notes on their backstory??
Can you imagine that conversation.

Old World Tokens Part 4 here. Part 1 with pictures, Part 2, Part 3.
4th and last part of the Old World Tokens excerpts! I'll make a collage later.

Aside from the flagged drinks at the Old World bar, there are a few significant additions:
Out of spite (or is it begrudging allowance?) — there happens to be a plain whiskey drink wrapped in edible paper bandages.
For when the original black and red flag was added, it was actually filled with whiskey, moulded to the anonymous benefactor's tastes.
And a certain mafioso hated it so much he had the bartender pour out an elegant wine cocktail in a wrapped glass modelled after the benefactor in a petty rage and so both parties came to spite-drank each other's glasses every other visit out of hatred.
It was at that point when one of the mystery benefactor's companions had accompanied them to the reopened Old World once and while there were no confirmed admissions, the bartender swore the red-haired companion favoured the drink shaped after his friend, at first ordering it out of amusement but later out of appreciation for the taste. (Not that they've visited this part of town that often, much to the bartender's chargin.)
Alas, the benefactor soon started coming alone after an unusually long hiatus.
The first time he did, he's taken aback by two changes.
First, the contents of red flag and bandaged drinks were swapped.
There was a comical moment of stunned silence, followed by a long blink at the whiskey set in front of him. A drink this benefactor hadn't touched since the absence of his friend.
He eventually downed the drink with a childish pout about how he's definitely not thanking that Chibi for messing things up. The gentle way he handled the glass betrayed his true thoughts before he's given yet another surprise —
There's a new food item he hadn't seen before:
An extra spicy curry dish called 'The Curry of Life'.
Marked by the popular label at the side, it's apparent to the beige-coated guest why this dish was well-received as he read through the 'all you can eat' terms and conditions during the weekdays and for kids. An cheap, affordable choice for anyone hoping to get their fill.
The benefactor dropped the menu with a loud groan, sliding a hand over his forehead. The conflicting emotions soon dissolved into wry laughter as he ordered a set for himself.
And as he expected, he still hated it.
Still just as tortured by the spices burning his mouth months ago as he is bad at tolerating the each bite of this one. And the benefactor would complain with an obnoxiously pitched whine to the bartender about how that rotten slug was adamant on making him suffer and he'll have to pay him back tenfold.
But the bartender would note, with a bit of smugness - how relaxed his customer looked, and they're certain there's the smallest of smiles grazing their benefactor's face.
It would be a regular favourite of this benefactor even as he brought over guests years later, eyes lighting up as he'll snicker at his workmates' expense, slowly adding them to the list of patrons the Old World bar caters to.
Special thanks to @melodiclune for enabling. I'm never writing again smh.

Old World Tokens Part 3 here. Part 1 with pictures, Part 2, Part 4.

Old World Tokens Part 1 and 2 here. Part 1 with pictures, Part 3, Part 4.
