In the US, children (of any age) can be arrested and imprisoned without trial, and kept indefinitely. Children have been imprisoned for hitting a classmate, being too loud, and just existing as a black child.
Children still have no rights in juvenile detention, and the staff treats them however they please.
A child was arrested for pushing a classmate. After he was placed in a cell, he wouldn't leave, because he was in shock. The staff didn't like how slow he was being, and put him in solitary confinement on his very first morning there. He was in solitary confinement for over 4 months, and developed psychosis.
He still has psychosis as an adult, and treats it by self medicating, because our healthcare system doesn't provide him with treatment.
Similar things happen to many, many children.
I cant believe this tweet is how I find out
Edit: Now that we're talking about it, look. There is all the countries ratification dates, along with considerations for their laws.
And you can check the convention here.
Edit 2: For those in the US who want to check their state's laws compliance to the convention, there is this site.
Edit 3: The map source btw. Its from wikipedia.
Thank you people in the notes for the info and image desc.

Not "It's a product of it's time" as a way to excuse its problematic undertones but rather "it's a product of it's time" to say that the issues it tackles were relevant then and its stances that now seem milquetoast were radical then, and that heavy handed, cheesy driving home of those viewpoints was sometimes necessary, and our acceptance and normalization of those viewpoints is in large part because of media like it normalizing those viewpoints and imagery, and watching it in the modern day turns into a loving study of history of the masses and public opinion
Yes this is about the original star trek
