So, I just finished reading the Whole Cake saga that I've been putting off and all I want to say is that I really, really, really need a saga dedicated to Zoro with Luffy, with at least the same levels of homoeroticism.

Luffy and Zoro's relationship in a nutshell:

TY for what you said about Laios.
I wish people in fandoms could explore asexuality/aromanticism more, but it feels like people only ever 'see it' in a character that's also widely viewed as autistic I remeber people doing it to Papyrus the skeleton, I remember them doing it to Kiyotaka Ishimaru from Danganronpa (although he was one half of a super popular ship so they couldn't say aroace they had to look us in the face and tell us that this ex-hall monitor of an all boy's middle schooler didn't know what sex or swearing was) And I'm disappointed to see it happening to Laios given how much of the story focuses on him as a person
It's extra annoyed me because it happened in my other main fandom rn MILGRAM, which is all about exploring the psycology of 10 characters, one of which, Haruka Sakurai is autistic/disabled in some way (like its a key part of his story) And like, its hard to explain over a single ask, but he's clearly like, Not Uninterested in girls
And yet a large chunk of the fandom will say they view him as aro/ace (it even won a fandom tumblr poll on character sexuality headcanons)
And what makes it transparent to me is that its never a springboard for exploring different kinds of non-romantic/sexual attraction its always just 'well I can't see him in a relationship'
Like oh 3 guesses why no one ever views the disabled guy as a viable romantic option-
I'm sorry for going off on one in your ask box I hope you understand
No dude, don’t apologize for sending this.
My post about Laios was just the final autistic coded character that broke the camel’s back. It happened to Luffy One Piece, Deku MHA, Papyrus like you yourself mentioned. Autistic after autistic character completely infantilized by fans and anti fans alike.
It’s frankly insulting how they (allistic) think we won’t Notice Patterns on fandom treatment when that’s literally a diagnosis criteria for autism. They don’t see us as people, at best autistic characters are funny mascots and at worst they’re obstacles in the way for Normal Yaoi ships that must be eliminated by total personality destruction.
I’m not afraid to throw self hating boot licking bitch accusations at fellow autists who unironically desexualize and depersonalize autistic characters. I don’t care about your professional or DIY diagnosis. If you engage in such behaviors you need to get the hell away from me.
Glad to have your back,
ActuallyAutistic + AROACE BI Robin

Expressing a dislike about something I love doesn't mean I don't like it more. One Piece is a very extensive work, it is natural that there are things that I like and don't like. Who better than myself to know?
Okay, I'm feeling very emotional tonight and my ideas may not make sense, but... am I the only one who feels like Nika is stealing the spotlight from Luffy and the Straw Hats? I mean, I know it's an important part of the story and there's a prophecy and the devil fruit but... I feel like the manga has focused a lot more on Nika's believers and how much he means to a lot of people, so I feel like those who believe in Luffy, Luffy as he is, are left behind and it is strange, all this coming from a character who does not want to be a hero or a god, does not want to be praised or idolized. I can understand that Luffy is the type of character who carries the dreams of his nakama (that is, everyone he meets and he decides he likes) but I still find it dehumanizing to elevate him to an unhealthy level of carrying the hopes of the world.
I would like Zoro to have the atheist moment of him like: "I don't give a damn about your God, that's my captain!"
After all, Zoro doesn't believe in gods and Luffy being Nika, I don't see why things should change. Because Zoro was the first to believe in Luffy. And one of the most valuable points of their relationship is being equal. Zoro will fight to be stronger just to reach Luffy, to have his level in strength and spirit, because the pirate king deserves no less.
So, I can imagine Zoro continuing with his indifference to divinity, perhaps dialogues like:
"I don't believe in gods, I still don't, but I believe in him." He will always believe in Luffy.
Although of course I'm Oda, I think any direction he chooses will be interesting.

Zolu ship from an Aroace's POV
Since this is my personal experience and very, very intimate, I don't plan to delve into more details, but after recent situations and some zolu shippers sharing their aroace identity, I thought I would share mine.
As an aroace person, I have never experienced conventional physical attraction, but that in no way means I haven't fallen in love. With my partners, I came to experience a close emotional bond of trust and attachment, which led me to fall in love. There was no sensuality, flirting or courtship. Physical intimacy was not an act of carnal desire either, but rather an emotional and close experience.
A lot of this has resonated with the Zolu ship for me. It is not about passions or carnal desires, it is about that emotional bond full of affection and genuine trust. It is not a fall in love produced by dopines, serotonins and oxycotins. It's about knowing a person, really knowing them, and not being able to imagine your days without them. For me, it is not feeling my heart race when I see them, rather the opposite, it is feeling calm and safe. It's not desperation or debauchery to jump into bed with them, it's the curiosity of sharing a new experience with your partner, even though you know you could be fine without it. And it can be great and satisfying, but you know that you couldn't do it with just anyone, only with the one with whom you share so many emotions and affections.
It is something so rare for me to find within fiction that I have not been able to help identifying myself, not in Zoro or Luffy, but in this way of loving someone. That is why, above all, I value their true relationship within the canon. It feels like "more than a friendship but less than a brotherhood". Unlike many fictional pairings, this is one of those few that is based on affection, loyalty, respect, good and kind things.
Yes, I am an aroace person and have had some of the experiences that many have said an aroace person is not capable of, and Zolu is not only a comfort ship for me, it also helps me affirm my identity. Maybe that's why many of us aroace love this ship, at least I think I can understand why aroace like their dynamics so much.
Like I said, this is just my experience and point of view.
Furthermore, there is no canonical sexuality for these characters, and just because you like to imagine that Luffy is an aroace who ignores romance and doesn't understand physical intimacy doesn't mean you should push it towards others.
And screw everyone who says that an aroace can't fall in love or enjoy sex with someone. For me, Zoro and Luffy fuck each other👌

So people are talking about a post in the Zolu tag by a certain tumblr user in regards to their issues with Zolu as a ship. They shall be unnamed because i dont wish to bring attention to them and instead just want to focus on their arguments because they're not the first people to make some of these points and so this is also an opportunity for me to talk about these things (a tweet is going around on Twitter containing these screenshots with the username so you can find it there if you need to anyway).
Tumblr media
The way this person dismisses the relationship between Zoro and Luffy as a result of needing to pair gay Zoro with someone is too laughable, they must be very fit in order to be able to do these mental gymnastics. I believe that many people who are going on about the Zolu scenes in the OPLA were already Zolu shippers who were familiar with the original story and are enjoying the moments because they were well, really good Zolu moments? And there is actually, shockingly, many good Zolu moments in the original story too which is why many people ship them. Wild, I know.
Then there's 'straight-washed Sanji'. Equally if not more of a bizarre thing to believe. I might make some people mad especially the Sanji stans out there who constantly insist on the 'repressed queer' narrative with his character, but Sanji is written pretty explicitly to be seen as a cisgender and heterosexual character. The way you say with your whole chest that Luffy is 'canonically' aroace but don't acknowledge that Sanji is 'canonically' cishet is beyond hypocritical. If you believe Sanji looking like a 'misogynistic straight man' is different from the way he is written in canon then maybe you should go back and reread/rewatch series with your eyes open this time. If you wish to headcanon him with the frankly offensive repressed bisexual/transgender cliché then go ahead, but that is clearly not the intention Oda has with his character.
There's also the fact that aroace people can uh. Be in relationships. Get married. Have children. Did it occur to you that many people who ship Zolu ship them as an ace couple or-
Tumblr media
First thing I want to say here, as a trans man who is 'mlm', can other dudes stop with this idea that women or fem-aligned individuals enjoying homosexual relationships between two men is inherently fetishising or that as a masc-aligned individual your enjoyment of a ship is morally superior in some way. Stop pulling out your 'mlm/ transmasc / cis gay' card in order to justify why your ship is superior. Its cringe af.
But if we are to insist that 'cishet female gaze fetishising mlm' is going on then ironically Zosan fits that the better than any ship in the fandom. It being by far the most popular mlm ship means there is likely a higher proportion of people who identify as cishet women who ship it. Its also the classic 'two men who dislike/hate eachother and have a toxic relationship but hot sexual tension' slash/yaoi stereotype. Majority of Zosan I've come across is depicting Zoro as the masculine male man in the relationship while Sanji the effeminate twink that Sanji stans project themselves onto and they go crazy for the bickering that is apparently reminiscent to them of a toxic heterosexual marriage. Meanwhile every Zolu/Luzo shipper I've interacted with has been some flavour of queer and Zolu is closest to the 'falling in love with your same sex bestie' narrative that the majority if not every non-heterosexual person has experienced at least once in their lifetime. This is just my personal view of course, but I think noting a difference in perspective on this topic is interesting and reveals that at the end of the day this is totally subjective and based purely on anecdotes.
Also it's just a very weird point here that apparently OP has 'plenty of varied queer rep' (it actually doesn't have that many canonical queer characters in relation to its cast size but anyway) and other media doesn't so shipping aroace characters in gay relationships is valid in those but not in One Piece … HUH???? So you're saying if One Piece had 'less' queer rep, then Zolu would be fine to ship? Idek my brain hurts.
Tumblr media
"I have black friends so I'll speak for the black community and get offended for them" (btw this person then proceeded to block aroace people who had issues with their depiction of aroace people).
Also if we're talking canonical depictions, the only thing Zoro has been canonically depicted as is also aroace, equally if not moreso than Luffy. So by your own rules, you can't ship a cishet (sanji) with an aroace (zoro), therefore Zosan is now invalid. Stop erasing Zoro's aroace identity bigot.
Tumblr media
'Categorically wrong' makes me laugh. I don't ship Zoro and Nami but like, people can ship what they want to??
'The general public is aware enough of gay people and how to spot them these days' uh... firstly this sounds very homophobic. Secondly the general public (cishet ppl) are famously bad at recognising queerness even when its in flashing lights before them. Thirdly you make it sound like Zoro was going around on roller skates and booty shorts listening to YMCA and Madonna in the show. I do agree he was gay-coded but it was mostly because he had sexual tension with every man he interacted with, not for the strange reasons you pointed out...
Its kinda the elephant in the room too but like. These are just headcanons. You can have multiple headcanons and interpretations of a character's sexuality. I can see Zoro as aroace virgin one day and a gay h*e the next. I'm actually allowed, legally, to do that.
Tumblr media
The way they think shipping Zolu is harmful to aroace representation when BOTH characters are closest to being canonically aroace than anything yet ship Zosan, label being anti-Zolu as some kind of pro-ace activism, and then proceeded to block aroace people for criticising their incorrect depiction of what being aroace is...
This was a lot of words to say that you don't like a ship. Just say you don't like it, and it gets in the way of the ship you like, instead of writing a virtue signalling essay to justify your reasoning. Please.
They had some more to say on future posts I'll just pick my favourite bits
Tumblr media
They really have this narrative that Zolu is only popular because of OPLA and can't fathom that its just a popular ship in general and always has been huh. And they couldn't make it more obvious that they're totally salty about it ranking in the top 100 most popular tumblr ships, lmao.
Tumblr media
Your classic case of 'self-identifying ally who speaks over the people they are supposed allies of'. Its a general rule that you feel the need to declare yourself an ally you're probably not an ally, actual allies know they need to just shut up and do the work. Saying 'this character's aroace' and 'I have aroace friends' actually isn't what allyship is, thats just accepting that ace people exist which is like... the baseline.
Tumblr media
Calling a wholesome loving ship like Zolu an icky ship is a severe consequence of online brain (this person is 26 years old btw)

looking at the discourse in the zolu tag, as someone who also headcanons Luffy as somewhere on both the ace and aro spectums (and who’s also pretty sure i’m somewhere on both of those myself) i can’t help but notice that a lot of people seem to forget that at the end of the day anything about both of their sexualities is a headcanon? and headcanons aren’t universal!!! just because something is a common fandom consensus doesn’t mean that everyone has to have the same headcanon?!
if someone has a headcanon that isn’t compatible with your own just keep scrolling (block and mute if you want) and find more people who view these characters in ways more similar to how you view them

"Love is the only thing that can make us forget ourselves and put another first. Even when we are in danger, going against instinct and expressing the highest level of humanity, the more we forget ourselves by giving yourself to another, you become more human. It is love that allows us to find reasons to continue the difficulty. It is the strength of love that allows us to find, even in the most difficult moments, comedy and beauty in life." —Farid Dieck
As much as many want to eliminate and belittle it, this bond exists, it is captured in the work as it is. An open example of union, loyalty and devotion. It doesn't matter if it's platonic, this is undeniably LOVE.

zolu aroace positivity post!!! because if you're aroace and you celebrate the gift that is zolu, I want to share why they mean so much to me as an aroace.
what makes zolu so special to me is because first and foremost, zoro and luffy went out to the vast open seas of the world to chase after their dreams. luffy wants to be the pirate king, zoro wants to be the best swordsman. even after being recruited, even after all they went through, they never stopped having their dreams as the forefront of their characters. but it just so happens that both their dreams are intertwined with each other, the best swordsman in the world's most fitting place is by being right next to the pirate king, and the pirate king believes that he would reach his goal by having the best by his side.
the reason why I believe zoro and luffy's relationship is so strong is because by fighting for their own dreams, they also strengthen their bond with the other. zoro wants to be strong to be the best swordsman, but it's also to protect the crew and to best support luffy as he guns for the title of pirate king. luffy wants to be strong to be pirate king, but it's also to protect the crew, but also? by being strong, he proves time and time again that his crew did not make the wrong decision to follow him, that he is a Captain that deserves to obtain the one piece (i think of luffy aiming to be strong so that his crew will never have to falter about his leadership, especially after water 7).
as an aroace, this feels like the best way to showcase love and devotion and trust with each other. knowing that someone's dream becomes a part of your own, that every time you fight for yourself and you aim to be a better version of yourself, you're not only working for your own sake but for the better of you and your partner. that i come to love my partner because they understand me, and they know why i fight so hard to reach my goal. and not only that, they fight as equally hard for their own goal. together, both of our dreams ultimately help each other become the best version of ourselves.
knowing that zoro believes in luffy wholeheartedly that he fought for his dream too, enough to put his life on the line for luffy. knowing that luffy can leave his most precious family and crew to zoro because he trusts zoro wholeheartedly to win.
to me, this is how I envision love. it's about getting to know each other, understanding each other, loving each other to the point that their dreams become yours, and fighting together side by side to make that dream come true.
zoro and luffy have that in spades. imo, zoro and luffy's appeal as a relationship is that they are intertwined with each other, and they go through hell and back and fight for each other and their dreams together. it's no wonder that aroace people like me are drawn to them, their love and bond transcends just having an attraction to each other. because it's also about having this person change and inspire me to be better.

I know that we zolu shippers like the religious tropes 'sun god/king of hell', 'angelic god/demon' and the headcanon of Zoro worshiping the god that Luffy has become, being one of his most faithful acolytes and leaving his atheism behind.
I love all that too, but what if it were different...
Like, what if Zoro despised Nika. What if he perceived it as an intrusive will taking over Luffy? What if he knows that using these powers further reduces his lifespan and he wants Luffy to resort to his Gear 5 as little as possible? After all, Luffy doesn't want to be worshiped or praised, he does NOT want to be anyone's hero.
I don't know, I can see Zoro looking at Nika and thinking "yeah, he's ridiculous and kind of cool, but that's enough, I want Luffy back."
