E4 & that Clexa love scene in their promo trailer
On 16th February a trailer appeared on E4 in the UK previewing some of their shows. One of the shows previewed was T1OO, and within T1OO’s preview was a clip of Clexa’s love scene. There are multiple things wrong with this trailer. The biggest problem is that when E4 set about deciding which clips to include in their trailer they will have known that right after the love scene came Lexa’s death. They spoiled the love scene but ignored that Lexa died onscreen 65 seconds after it. This was a conscious decision to bait us and heighten the shock. And it is right up there at the top alongside the worst of what Jason Rothenberg, his writers and CW did. After the ‘leak’ E4 were quick to change the trailer. They swapped the Clexa scene for Clarke/Niylah instead. One f/f relationship is not an automatic substitution for another. The fact they went with Clexa in the first place when there was an alternative they could have used is proof that they consciously decided to use the f/f relationship which would get the most interest from fans. What remained unchanged about this trailer however was the tone. In both versions the voice over directly refers to the f/f scenes as “we’ve got sci-fi girls kissing” and then a kiss sound effect plays. No f/f scene deserves to demeaned in this way. The Clexa scene specifically did not deserve to be reduced from a pivotal moment to cheap titillation. How fortunate that there just happened to be two f/f scenes in S3 and that their voice over line just happened to be generic enough to be kept when they switched Clexa for Clarke/Niylah. Did they consciously decide to work up this trailer knowing they would have to pull the original version of it and go with a different but easily edited version once ‘word’ got out about their ‘leak’? Why make a trailer which contains a scene you know shouldn’t be revealed for numerous reasons. Why make a trailer you can only get away with airing once. Why give yourselves additional work to do by needing to make an alternative version. It’s all very elaborate and have E4 not got more pressing things to do? Rothenberg and his writers were very quick to draw attention to this ‘leak’ having happened in exactly the same they once took to social media to highlight the Clexa kiss ‘leak’ from S2. If there was a request to E4 to pull the original trailer it will have come from JR/CW. But what if JR/CW were actually in on this the whole time and that is why E4 went to the trouble of making a trailer they could have two versions of. One other thing which E4 are guilty of is their trolling take on the ‘leak’. Their continuity announcer repeatedly referenced the fact they had spoiled part of the show. They were making fun of the situation whilst being fully aware that the same fans who were laughing along with them while they enjoyed the scene they had been given an early glimpse of would be crushed 65 seconds after watching the scene in its actual episode. Regardless of whether the ‘leak’ was orchestrated by JR/CW or not E4 themselves have still acted with a complete disregard for the significance of Clexa, of the importance of f/f representation in the media and the welfare of their own LGBT viewers. All of these points have been put to them by UKKru on behalf of the LGBT Fans Deserve Better movement. They have so far declined to offer explanation.

E4, ep307, and their viewer support measures
We have noticed a lot of posts and comments about E4 in regards to the way they aired ep307 and ran their twitter account during. Many of the posts and comments are about the way E4 used a viewer discretion warning on TV before the episode and provided support links on both TV and social media afterwards. The people making these posts and comments are missing a vital piece of information. In the days immediately after 307’s original airing on CW UKLeskru formed. Our aim was to push the LGBT Fans Deserve Better movement in the UK. We decided that a priority of ours would be to influence the actual airing of this episode on E4 in a way which might protect any LGBT viewer who was still unaware of what happened to Lexa or knew but was now actually going to see it. The very first thing UKLeskru did was to contact Channel4 & E4 and explicitly request that they run a viewer discretion warning before the episode and support services afterwards. They did this. Providing discretion warnings and post-episode support at times when necessary is a UK regulator requirement. The warnings and support are for the protection of the viewer. So when E4 were contacted in advance – by their viewers (by way of us) – to inform them that the warnings and support should accompany 307 when it eventually aired in the UK E4 could not ignore that request. The support links were also tweeted by E4 after the episode. One quick glance at their twitter TL will show you that their post-episode content included clips from 307. Sitting two tweets below their support links is an ‘episode highlight’ clip of Lexa dying. If E4 were truly interested in protecting their viewers they would not be tweeting the very triggers they are supposedly trying to help viewers recover from. Praising E4 is unwarranted. Using this as an opportunity to say E4 did it right while CW are doing it wrong is a mistake for two reasons: 1) it makes out that E4 ran their warning/support because they thought to (where CW never) without acknowledging that E4 were told to, and 2) it overshadows the fact that E4 are guilty of queerbaiting us in the same way CW did. Instead of applauding E4 we should be pushing them to explain their promo trailer which ‘leaked’ the Clexa love scene back in February. They knew she died when this trailer was made. They have so far declined to comment on it when asked. We have made a more thorough post about this subject here.

Why are we targeting E4 and giffgaff (mobile phone network & E4’s sponsor)? One of the principle aims of the LGBTfansdeservebetter movement is the all round improvement of LGBT+ representation in the media. One of the ways in which we achieve this is to spread our message to as many television networks in as many countries as possible. E4, along with their parent Channel 4, pride themselves on their diversity and representation both on and off screen. ‘The 1OO’ episode 3x07 falls short of the promises written in Ch4/E4’s own Diversity Charter. Some of their own past programming also has some of the worst examples of the Dead Lesbian Trope and therefore falls short of the promises written in their Diversity Charter. Ch4/E4 need to acknowledge and understand their responsibility to their LGBT+ audience when creating or importing shows in the future.
3x07 airing in the UK gives us a rare opportunity to not just take advantage of a television channel directly engaging with their viewers during episodes but also the channel’s sponsor giffgaff participating as well. Both E4 and giffgaff livetweet ‘The 1OO’ and encourage viewers to tweet them with their thoughts and feelings on the episode and show. Their twitter handles are manned. They are specifically asking for our response to episode 3x07.
Do you remember the Clexa love scene making its way into a promotional trailer? E4 did that. Remember how happy it made us all. In light of us now knowing of Lexa’s death minutes afterwards, does the inclusion of this scene in the trailer not now look highly suspect? E4 will have known she died in exactly the same way Jason Rothenberg, his writers and CW knew. E4 are guilty of queerbaiting us as well.
Leskru’s Orders:
The Blackout is still in effect. In addition to not using the show’s official title and hashtags we will also not be using Ch4/E4’s and giffgaff’s promotional hashtags.
Tweets to: @E4tweets, @Channel4, @giffgaff
Link to: http://lgbtfansdeservebetter.com & http://wedeservedbetter.com & https://classy.org/fundraise?fcid=625415 – all tweets including these links should be positive in tone
Link to articles about the movement and the trope: all articles can be found at http://lgbtfansdeservebetter.com/news/. Be sure to link direct to the full article source
What else to tweet: Your thoughts on 307. Your thoughts on the Dead Lesbian Trope. Your thoughts on poor LGBT+ representation in the media in general. Your thoughts on queerbaiting audiences.
Tell E4 what you now think about that Clexa love scene being included in their promo trailer now it is known that she died straight after, and that E4 will have known she died when making that trailer.
This is not a trending exercise. The content of your tweets is the most important thing.
It is does not matter if you are not in the UK.
Wider Action: UKKru will also be compiling a google doc of contact details for E4 & Channel 4, giffgaff, and every business/company whose advertisement runs during 307, both on television and online. Template emails and letters will be also be provided. Also included in the google doc will be instruction on what to do with the information it contains. UKKru have already had correspondence with some LGBT+ friendly media and will continue to pursue this.

So I’ve seen the ‘365 movies in 365 days’ challenge and I thought I’d do this one for me. I’m not the movie kind of person, I don’t watch movies often at all, but I do watch a lot of shows and if the movieholics have a challenge, then why shouldn’t I. The goal is simple: 500 episodes in a year. Each episode counts as just one: if it’s 20 min long, it’s still 1 episode, not just half. If it’s, lets say, a Sherlock episode, one hour and a half, it’s still just 1 episode, not 2 or 3 or 4. This is way less than 2 episodes per day, so it’s not impossible at all, in fact in 2010 I reached this goal in half a year. So yeah homes. Watch all the episodes!
