I wasn't expecting Kristen to become like my favorite character this season, but I fucking love this arc she's going through. And I was thinking about her, and her little brother Bucky, and wondering - does Bucky even know why Kristen left Helio in the first place?
And Kristen doesn't articulate it very well because she's a teenager and she doesn't fucking want to talk about her trauma with goddamn Buddy Dawn - but her reasons for leaving and her worship of Cassandra make so much sense. Kristen focuses a lot on the doubt aspect of Cassandra, saying, "it's a bit of a hard sell," and I think she should lead with the fact that Cassandra is the only Sylvan god who never fucking lied to her.
When Kristen died that very first time, killed by corn constructs, essentially Kristen's own holy symbol, and she asked Helio, the god of corn, why bad things happen to good people ("why did this happen to me?"). And he refused to answer, to admit that he doesn't know, and that there are some things outside of even his control, and that destroyed Kristen's trust in him forever.
And when Kristen still drew her power from him, unknowingly, Helio and Sol still lied to her. They weren't honest, and I think they somehow made Yes? into a stooge god for them to reach Kristen through. Then Galicaea lied to her about the Nightmare King killing her sister.
Kristen needed a god who wouldn't lie to her, who wouldn't give her a security blanket made of false truths and ignorance. Cassandra is the only Sylvan god who provides comfort and security by telling the truth. She says, "I don't know why some things happen, parts of the universe will remain a mystery always. But I will walk with you while you figure it out (or don't), and I will hold your hand in the darkness."
Stepping or step dancing is “a percussive dance in which the participant’s body is used to produce complex rhythms and sounds through a mixture of footsteps, spoken word, and hand-claps,” writes the African American Registry.
Step has its origins in Africa, as dancing has been a large part of traditional African culture for centuries.
Calling Step a "bizarre silent dance without music" has to be one of the wilder antiblack racist descriptions I've ever heard of stepping lmao. Anyway if you see the video, it's step!!! They're stepping!! It's a Black American form of dance!!
I can’t wait for this season to finish solely because I feel like I don’t know anything concrete about any of the new NPCs. We only know what the PCs think, see, and understand, which may not be full facts right now. Everyone is very complex right now and I like that. This season is a very compelling story.
[ID: a recreation of a Steven Universe comic panel by Haus of Decline. In this version, kristen applebees has a tiny winnie the pooh in a baby chest carrier and is supporting her weight in one hand while the other holds her staff of doubt beside them. They both have a worried expression as Kristen says "i think we're gonna have to kill this guy, winnie", who disappointedly replies with "damn". /end ID]
This’ll probably be one of the last animatics I post in a while, but I had to contribute at least one of them to one of my favorite ships of all time— Megstine 🥰🫶
