Charlotte Perriand Designs
French designer known for iconic 20th-century furniture, such as the LC “Fauteuil Grand Confort” set of Modernist living-room furniture that includes a chair, two sizes of sofa, and an ottoman, one of many collaborations with Le Corbusier and his cousin, Pierre Jeanneret.

Charlotte Perriand
For a while it seems Charlotte Perriand was written about as the woman “behind the scenes,” but I don’t think that’s the case any more. Once harshly turned away by Le Corbusier at the age of 24, she was soon welcomed into his studio after he witnessed her work, and remained there from 1927 to 1937. Charlotte, alongside Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, was a pioneer in the early modern design movement, introducing the “machine age” aesthetic. In 1928, three iconic designs emerged from her: the B301 Basculant Sling chair (for conversation), the LC2 Grand Comfort chair (for relaxation), and the B306 Chaise Longue (for sleeping).
Another design that emerged from her in 1952 has recently been reissued by Cassina: the 526 Nuage Bookshelf (originally referred to as “Mexican Bookshelf” because it was designed for the Maison du Mexique at Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris).
“The most important thing to realize is that what drives the modern movement is a spirit of inquiry, it’s a process of analysis and not a style.” – Charlotte Perriand
