nhl players who can read:

sidney crosby (founder and executive director of the nhl center for players who can’t read good)

alexander ovechkin, PhD

jonathan toews (but his favorite author is ayn rand and his second favorite author is friedrich nietzsche)

erik johnson (could write the next great American novel. can’t be bothered.)

pk subban (has been publishing wildly successful bodice-rippers and a popular street fashion blog under a pseudonym for years)

carey price (though if you ask him what he’s reading he’ll blink slowly at you, tear a page out of his book, and eat it without breaking eye contact)

noted children’s author zach hyman

niklas backstrom (but not any language that you or I or any other mortal being would recognize)

nhl players who bully others into doing any necessary reading for them:

evgeni malkin (duh)

gabe landeskog (he doesn’t have to bully them—they’d do it for their captain, that gorgeous stallion of a man, in a heartbeat—but it’s more fun this way)

mat barzal (he has a guy on retainer)

nhl players who can sound out simple words:

mitch marner

tj oshie (one syllable words only except for the names of his children and his favorite menu items)

roman josi (though why would you ask that man to be more than a pretty face)

tyler seguin (he’s actually functionally literate but he likes to ask people to read things for him as a flirting technique)

nathan mackinnon (sid would NOT get off his back till he could read at least middle grade books. he doesn’t make a habit of it or anything, he’s not a freak, but he always secretly orders the newest diary of a wimpy kid book on release day)

nhl players who don’t know what letters are and would be deeply alarmed to find out:

travis konecny (see: that video from the bubble where he looks bewildered and extremely ‘I did NOT put this here’ about the presence of a bookshelf in the hotel)

jamie benn (somewhere in the world just now jamie benn experienced a shudder of fear without understanding why)

andre burakovsky (bless him)

jack hughes (when nico and PK tried to teach him a few letters jack started shaking and crying until his eyes rolled back into his head. he woke up five minutes with no memory of what had just transpired, and asked cheerfully if anyone knew how you cooked broccoli if you wanted it to be like, crispy)
