It was the picture of a house which reminded me vividly of the hideous building in New York; it had the same air of disease and decay, and if ever a house looked like a candidate for a ghost, it was this one. All that I had to identify it was the name of a California town, so I wrote to my mother, who has lived in California all her life, and sent her the picture, asking if she had any idea where I could get information about this ugly house. She wrote back in some surprise. Yes, she knew about the house, although she had not supposed that there were any pictures of it still around. My great-grandfather built it. It had stood empty and deserted for some years before it finally caught fire, and it was generally believed that that was because the people of the town got together one night and burned it down. By then it was abundantly clear to me that I had no choice; the ghosts were after me. In case I had any doubts, however, I came downstairs a few mornings later and found a sheet of copy paper moved to the center of my desk, set neatly away from the general clutter. On the sheet of paper was written DEAD DEAD in my own handwriting. I am accustomed to making notes for books, but not in my sleep; I decided that I had better write the book awake, which I got to work and did.”

My FAVORITE THING is researchers who wholeheartedly embrace the Ms. Frizzle aesthetic and wear their field of study on their literal sleeve. Everyone in the invasive crayfish consortium has tiny lobster-print shorts or socks. All the middle-aged dad scientists here at the lab have shirts with fish and/or fishing tackle patterns on them. My moss specimen and ammonite earrings keep getting noticed by women who are wearing silver fishbone-shaped or native plant-themed earrings themselves. Every single person on the outreach team has at least one shirt with an anchor pattern on it from Old Navy, and almost all the younger researchers have tattoos featuring their research interests – one fisheries biologist has a half-sleeve of native species she literally uses as an outreach tool. We are self-aware and having a blast with it, honestly.

How cool is it that Conklin Pens revived one of their most famous vintage pens, the Crescent Filler, complete with a rubber sac + spring loaded filler system and all?! This exact design (from the chase pattern to the filling system) is over a century old, and the original crescent filler was legendary American author Mark Twain’s daily carry.

I have mine in an Extra Fine, and it is wetttt. 💦 But then, most sac filling systems are! It’s just so COOL to see a modern sac-filling pen with upgraded materials. The only downside to a sac-filler is I wouldn’t recommend this pen-type for air travel as the latex sac can compress during elevation and cause leaks. But it makes the perfect daily carry! Especially since the clip is so easy to maneuver + attach to your shirt lapel, pen pocket, or stow away in a bag nib-side up!

Plus, I mean… It’s pretty. And it’s a replica of the exact pen Mark Twain used. Cool points all around. 😎

Ink is Monteverde USA Chameleon! It’s a DEEP burgundy grape red/purple. You’d mistake it for black very easily if it wasn’t side by side with actual black ink. Thus, it makes an excellent ink for work, school, and other situations which call for a saturated, readable, and well-behaved wet ink. Can definitely recommend if you’re in the market for something with a little character!
