A raving human, sophistic human, fleeing human, two-faced, cynical human, laborious human[1], a spiteful human—you spread around a scene of hell, and I roll around in the room I escape to, feeling like a bug that can never leave, never sleep How does it feel? Feels like I'm in a dream, it makes me puke.

Notes:

1. 鏤骨 (rukotsu) - refers to taking painstaking efforts, or working oneself to the bone.

2. 言葉狩り(Kotobagari) [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kotobagari] which literally means “word-hunting” is a term used to describe a practice that frowns upon the use of certain offensive or politically incorrect words in Japanese.

3. 飛んで否に入る悦の虫 (tonde hi ni iru etsu no mushi) is a play on 飛んで火に入る夏の虫 (tonde hi ni iru natsu no mushi) which is the idiomatic expression, "like a moth to a flame." 悦 means self-satisfaction; rejoicing and 否 is literally just "no" or "deny" 夏の虫 literally means "summer insects" such as moths, fireflies, dragonflies etc.

4. Just for a bit of background knowledge, そっちの水は甘いか (socchi no mizu wa amai ka?) has its roots in a children's folk song called Hotaru Koi [https://www.bethsnotesplus.com/2020/02/hotaru-koi.html] or "Come, fireflies." From a historical perspective, Hotaru Koi was sung by children in pursuit of fireflies in an attempt to lure them. The original lyric is actually こっちの みずは あまいぞ (kocchi no mizu wa amai zo) meaning, "The water tastes sweeter over here!" It has an inviting tone. In the lyrics for Coquetterie Dancer, Niru replaced こっち (here) with そっち (there) and the ぞ with an interrogative か, thus changing it into a question. Considering the themes of classism in the song, this line probably represents the rejection faced by the dancer and his dissatisfaction with it, in a "grass is greener on the other side" way. You also can imagine it as the follow-up question asked by the children in a scenario where the fireflies did not bother them with their attention, like, "Oh, is the water where you're going even sweeter than what we have here?"

5. Not too important, but it's interesting to note that the kanji in these lines combined together, produces a different word with the same Onyomi readings:

名も声も (mei mo sei mo) - 名声 (meisei) - fame, reputation

生も命も (sei mo mei mo) - 生命 (seimei) - life, working life/career, life force/soul

6. 冥利に尽きる - a phrase used to express good fortune where one can't imagine being any luckier

7. 毒や薬にもなりゃしない - This phrase either means something useless or something that causes no harm, but doesn't do any good either.

8. 丹寧 (tannei) - This isn't an actual word but a play on 丹念 (tannen) and 丁寧 (teinei) both of which denote meticulousness and being careful. It could also be a play on the word "tannin," which is the astringent substance found in wine that causes the dry feeling in the mouth when consumed. In addition, 丹 refers to red or vermilion, a color associated with anger. Speaking of, 激昂 refers to rage/fury and excitement (I'm supposing the violent, explosive kind). I tried to incorporate both the nuances in the line.

9. 召し上がれ - is a polite way of serving someone food, like "please help yourselves." Since the title of the song has a French word and the tone of the song is chaotically merry, bon appétit was chosen.

10. [From amgr] 赤恥 (akahaji) or 赤っ恥 (akappaji) refers to extreme disgrace or shame received in front of others. 返り恥 (kaeri haji) comes from 返り血 (kaeri chi) which refers to the splashes of blood from one's victim(s).

ゲテモノ is generally defined as "low-quality products; strange thing; strange combination" but is often used in the context of bizarre-looking food.

多勢に無勢 the herd of sheep outnumber the wolves A Japanese idiom that means to be outnumbered; being no match for the numbers. Spira: This is by far my favorite line because it reinforced the herd mentality aspect of the song. It is difficult to overcome the majority.

論争を招きそうだ　優しそうで目は笑ってないのが癖になる異端症 In the video, the highlighted words spell out "うそはなに" which means "What's the lie?"

鱗粉を撒いて so scatter some scales 翅を焦がせ burn up those wings Refers to any kind of fine powdery scales like those found on the wings of a moth. They refer to the appearance of the scales and not a particular type of creature, and so we've kept the ambiguity.

形影相弔う The phrase used here literally means "the form and its shadow console and pity each other." In an interpretive way, it refers to a person so lonely that only their shadow is there to comfort them. The main word (形影) means "form and its shadow." Something that's always accompanying the other, never separated. FYI, there is also a different phrase (形影相伴う) which emphasizes this togetherness and is often used in the sense of "a happy married couple"

No Life King is the novel written by Seiko Ito. The premise is about the blurring between reality and fantasy.
