So, here he was stuck in another reality. Peter thought he had seen it all when he got to meet two other versions of himself, but he never really expected to have their positions be reversed.
In fact, Peter had Strange cast that second spell specifically to prevent anything like this from happening. He did it to protect the stability of the multiverse, to keep everything as it was and where it should be. He did it to save everything. If he thought about the hypothetical truth that everything he did that day was for nothing, that he sacrificed so much only for it to fail— well, he couldn't think about that. For his own sanity, he needed to try and focus on the ways he could begin to fix things. Again.
But as stressed as he was, Peter also felt like there was a certain weight that had been lifted off his shoulders. Getting pulled into another reality felt almost like a reset button was hit. He was in a place where none of his past mistakes seemed to matter. His loneliness, his pain, his fear and bitterness— they were all an entire universe away. Peter was very good at running when things got hard, even if he was stubborn when faced with admitting it. To him, distance was the best thing for everyone around him who mattered. They were better off without him, and he didn't have to face the crushing heartbreak it all brought him.
Still— there were certain behaviors that were so strongly ingrained in him that they were now habits. Protective measures that probably didn't need to exist, because he was so afraid of more bad things happening. That's how he found himself wearing his mask in the kitchen of the Baxter Building as he was grabbing himself a glass of water. And maybe a snack.
He knew that it looked stupid, wearing his mask with a t-shirt and sweatpants. Every time he scampered into one of the shared rooms the Fantastic 4 were kind enough to be letting him use, he tried to do it when no one else was around. And he always tiptoed or wall-crawled back into his assigned room to eat on his bed. Solitude was safe— that's what Peter learned. He tried to take up as little space as possible, to not be a bother to anyone, to decrease the likelihood that he would form any sort of attachment.
Tumblr media
For two days, Peter interacted with the other occupants of the building as little as possible. But as he was staring into the open fridge, tapping an anxious finger against the door as he battled his decision paralysis regarding a midnight snack, he could hear someone entering the room and knew that he couldn't run away this time.
His focus shifted to trying to script a conversation in his head depending on who it was about to join him— but he still continued staring into the fridge as he held it open, frozen in place as his mind ran in a dozen different directions.

"Yeah, 'course. I love starting over. There are so many things I wish I could start over." Peter paused, blinking a few times. "—what were we talking about again?"
Tumblr media
"Can we start over? Please? It's been a weird day. Well, week. Things are just weird right now overall."

"There's like, seven trillion spider people. Not even just other mes, there's just— so many! There's so many! I thought it was a lot when I met two other versions of myself but this is a whole other level. But do you really think it's gonna end badly?"
Tumblr media
"Nothing like the multiverse to make you feel redundant. Two sets of Avengers, three thunderbolts teams... it's a powder keg destined to blow."

"That is quite literally the opposite of what's been going on with me. I can't stop thinking about it. How are you so chill about it? Like I'm genuinely curious."
Tumblr media
"I feel like everyone's talking about you know what, but I'm really pulling a blank here."

"Right.. about that whole thing. Uhm, what exactly classifies as an incursion?" Maybe it was a bad idea to be asking about that, but his guilt was eating away at him and he needed to start figuring out if all this was his fault or not.
Tumblr media
"Considering the fact that some people were running around recklessly creating incursions, none of this should be a huge surprise. Unfortunate, yes, but not entirely out of left field."

"Uh no, no I'm not." Peter glanced between the man and the dog he was feeding, shaking his head. "Does he always get hot dogs or is it like, a special occasion?"
"Not allergic to dogs are you? If so you should start holding your breath." Reader said handing Forey, his seeing eye dog and companion, one of the two hot dogs he just bought.

"Yeah, tell me about it." Peter agreed with a scoff, but then he paused and narrowed his eyes. "Wait I'm sorry.. did you say clone?"
Tumblr media
"I used to think I was unoriginal for being a clone and now I just feel unoriginal being spider-man."

"—did you say a bird shit on my plate?!" Peter looked up from his food, absolutely panicked as he spoke through a huge mouthful of food that he was currently chewing. "Why didn't you say somethin' sooner?"
Tumblr media
"I know your biscuits are different but it just looks weird, mate." Hobie looked at the substance again. American Gravy didn't seem to look right. "Why's it grey?" a beat "it's like a bird's gone and shat on your plate." was that insulting? "No offense." he added.

"Maybe this is really messed up to say but— this reality seems better than the one I came from. It's so similar but it just- it feels lighter. I dunno, does that make any sense?" Peter immediately felt guilty saying that out loud, especially when there was still a possibility that they were all here because of something he did.

“I think you’re the first person I’ve ever heard say that. Besides my wife, maybe.” The admission came easy, since Marc was comfortable talking to this kid, but he realized that mentioning he had a wife would bring up a lot more questions that he wasn’t sure he had the answers to. Thankfully the Spider-Man bomb helped Marc breeze right through his own sensitive topic as he raised his eyebrows at Peter.
Tumblr media
As much as that bit of information was to process, Marc couldn’t help the slight smile that spread across his face once he started to piece everything together. Of course that was how he ran into Jake. It still made him feel sick to know that Jake was killing someone while they stumbled into each other, but he’d save the explanation of their servitude to Khonshu for later. That was a little heavy for right now.
“I— We appreciate it. It definitely clears a few things up for me, at least.” He couldn’t help the snort he let out when Peter suggested he shows him the ropes. It was rare that someone got a genuine laugh out of Marc, but that definitely did it. Even if it was in a slight self-deprecating way, he still smiled as he shook his head. “I’ve got about twelve years of rops under my belt, kid. But the offer is nice. Our boss tends to like it when we work alone most of the time.”
Marc didn’t mean to push Peter away, even if he was subconsciously doing just that. It was hard to believe that this kid genuinely wanted to spend more time with someone like him.
“I went to a science and technology high school and I still somehow was bullied for being the way I am.” What Peter didn’t mention was that he didn’t get to graduate from said school, but that wasn’t really relevant at the moment. “I think I would have felt a little less alone if I had known someone like Steven when I was a kid.”
Tumblr media
Peter smiled, lips pulling into a straight line as he nodded. “Right, right— of course. I didn’t mean to say that you didn’t know what you were doing. Your twelve beats my five by a lot.” He chuckled awkwardly, rubbing a hand over his arm. That spider bit him before he had even turned 15, so being Spider-Man felt like his entire life at this point. Everything before that felt like someone else, like he had been living in someone else’s skin.
“You uh, you have a boss?” He was surprised by that. Vigilantes normally didn’t, but maybe Peter had assumed things based on his own experiences. He had never had a boss exactly, but he had mentors. He had been part of teams, worked with others— but it wasn’t exactly something he was good at. So Peter understood what Marc meant. Working alone was easier, and it was better for everyone else.

"Oh." Peter's lips flattened into a straight line and then he nodded in understanding. "May always used to say I wasn't a very good liar— I get it now. You alright?"
Tumblr media
"yeah no, everything's great. sure," he says, through gritted teeth, spidey senses going utterly haywire.

Peter sensed her just before they would have collided, but he stilled jumped when she turned visible again. “Oh—! That’s alright, you’re fine! Learning to control powers.. I’ve been there. Done that. It’s not easy.”
Tumblr media
A formerly invisible body flickers into view as Susan deftly steps to the side to avoid the person coming in her direction. “—Sorry. Growing pains. It’s a work in progress.”

"—right." There was another pun forming in his mind but Peter squashed it before he got himself into any more trouble. His small smile dropped. "Sorry. I make jokes when I'm nervous. It's a bad habit. I bet you've heard enough of those, though."
Tumblr media
"yeah, because a condition like this blesses someone with just the wildest sense of humor. give me a fucking break.”

Truth be told, Johnny was excited that there was finally some action that was reason enough for Reed to let them out into the world again. He needed to work on containing that excitement so people didn’t automatically assume that he was happy that people had died, because he wasn’t. Still, he couldn’t hold back a slight smirk as he listened to the brunette boy speak. “Don’t worry, you’ve got Johnny Storm and the Fantastic Four on the case. And yes, that’s the full team name. Don’t let any of them tell you otherwise.”
Tumblr media
That got a chuckle out of him. “Yeah? It’s catchy. Very short, easy to remember. Rolls right off the tongue.” Was that too many cliche phrases? Maybe. Peter tried to shrug it off— he already knew he wasn’t always the best at first impressions. “I’m guessing you’re Johnny. Is it weird to ask.. are you the one that—“ Peter made a sound like a fireball exploding, pairing it with a hand motion to match.

“The whole thing is wild to me. Where I’m from, once you’re gone, you’re gone.” Gone like her Peter, all too soon. “I guess I also shouldn’t think too hard about it.”
Tumblr media
“Most of the time that’s how it works.” Peter thought of Tony, of May, of Ben, of his parents. There were still plenty of people who were gone and wouldn’t be coming back. A bit of that anger and bitterness seeped into his words. “Honestly I don’t really know why I’ve gotten to come back twice now and there are others who never will. It’s not fair, you know?” Peter knew why he was brought back this time, of course. But it didn’t make the losses any easier.

“Okay or not, we need to look into seeing if there’s any side-effects from this.” Something has left Carol unsettled. “Not thinking about it could screw us over down the line.”
Tumblr media
Peter shrugged. “I feel fine. More than fine, really. My senses were out of whack for a little while but they’re back to normal now.” This whole scenario was certainly giving him practice with his lying skills. That was probably a good thing. “I mean, it’s definitely weird. But what could there be to worry about?”
