life update <3
Tumblr media
hi everyone -
thank you so much to everyone who has given love to Pinewood and Poetry over this holiday season, it truly warms my heart. welcome to all of my new followers!
i’m sure some of you have noticed i pretty much dropped off the face of the earth after my two attempts at a summer collab failed. i am so lucky to have friends who stood by me during that nightmarish summer.
i took a much needed break in the fall, at which time my life seemed to get even more hectic. i got a new boss and new responsibilities at my old job at my work load increased (almost doubled, at least it felt like double).
but i soon got the opportunity to apply for my dream job. AND I GOT THE JOB.
for anonymity sake, i will only reveal that i am teaching at a college level now and it feels so good. i don’t expect to ever have the same amount of spare time i did when i started writing fan fiction, but i’m ready to prioritize it again.
i love my stories and my wips and i want to finish them. so slowly, but surely i will. i plan to update my blog and post an updated posting schedule with VERY approximated posting dates soon. i’m happy to be back and look forward to getting back into this lovely community. <3

𝔊𝔬𝔡𝔰 𝔄𝔪𝔬𝔫𝔤 𝔘𝔰 ℭ𝔬𝔩𝔩𝔞𝔟
Tumblr media
Time is a song of remembrance.
A song is sung to a time when the very breath of the wind carried a spirit. A song sang Back to a time when the harvest’s bounty was a celebration unto a name, where powerful beings unseen by human eyes heard every pain and sound of jubilation.
Long ago, in the faraway land of ancient Greece, there was a golden age of powerful Gods and Goddesses and their extraordinary tales. High atop Mount Olympus, shrouded in clouds lay the palatial grounds of the Olympian Gods and Goddesses. While deep below beyond the river Styx lay the realm of Hades, the home of the Gods of the Underworld, guarded by Cerberus and final resting place of souls.
These tales are now captured in pages, books, and scraps of ancient text. But what if there was a chance? What if the subtle energy floating in the air meant something more?

Camp Blue Side - Part One - Part Two - Part Three - Part Four
~~~~~~~
It’s been a hard few days at Camp Blue Side. After the very humbling experience of having the LCT lay into you in front of Hoseok, you’ve decided to let Mack take the reins on all future activities. It’s helped you avoid conflict with Hoseok during team games.
Unfortunately, Mack had some kind of stomach issue this morning, so you are flying solo. Well mostly solo, you are under the watchful eye of Namjoon. He’s checked in on you during every activity. Today, all three teams are on the field for a giant game of capture the flag. Namjoon is explaining the rules, in great detail, to all the campers.
“Each team will nominate one person to hide their flag, make sure it’s in a spot where it can be reached and defended.” Namjoon explains before passing out the colored flags.
Team Two nominates Matthew, who has made a speedy recovery from his injuries and is now back at all activities. Namjoon hands the green flag to Matthew who takes off to your team’s allotted area to hide the flag. Then, all the teams gather at their respective bases before the game begins.
“Three, two, one, go!” Namjoon shouts and blows his whistle to announce the start of the game.
You watch carefully, a few feet away from the base, as your campers take their positions. Some are staying back to defend the flag, but most of them have run off to attempt to steal another team’s.
“Y/N! Y/N!” Jessica comes running up to you, calling for you.
“Are you okay?” You ask, crouching down to Jessica’s eye level.
“Hoseok’s team is cheating!” She wines.
“What are you talking about?” You ask, trying your absolute best to keep your cool. You haven’t had to speak to him since the meeting, but your blood is starting to boil.
“They hid their flag in a tree! I can’t reach it!” She explains.
“I’ll take care of it.” You reply.
Hoseok wants to win so badly that he would cheat. Doesn’t this go against Camp Blue Side rules? Isn’t this the kind of competitive bull shit that you just got scolded for? You march over to Hoseok’s team’s base and look around for him.
“Hey! Hoseok!” You shout when you see him leaning up against a tree.
“What?” He spits, walking to close the distance between you.
“I heard you’re cheating over here.”
“Excuse me?” He replies. Out of the corner of your eye, you can see Namjoon and the Team Three leader running across the field to see what’s going on.
“You’re cheating! You can’t put the flag in the tree!” You yell.
“Stop yelling in front of the kids! It’s not cheating!” He yells back.
“Yes it is! The kids are supposed to be able to reach it, and Jessica couldn’t reach it!”
“Well it’s not our fault that Jessica is shorter than the average kid!” Hoseok retorts.
“Why can’t you just play fair? You are ruining the summer!” You may be projecting a bit, retelling the things that you have been accused of the past few weeks.
“Why are you being such a bitch?” He responds, clearly too heated to remember there are kids around. Namjoon tries to interject, but there’s something spilling out of your mouth before you even realize it.
“WHY DIDN’T YOU EVER CALL ME?” You shout. Namjoon whips his head around to you and there is a chorus of gasping from the kids caught in the crossfire.
“I TRIED. YOU GAVE ME THE WRONG NUMBER!”
“What? No I didn’t! You ghosted me!” You reply once again, but this time Namjoon steps between you and puts his hands up. But there’s no point, the realization is starting to sink in.
Hoseok tried to call you. An image flashes in your mind, it takes you back to last summer. You hadn’t swapped phone numbers yet. You didn’t need to because you saw each other everyday. On the last day of camp, you thought it would be cute to write your number on his hand. But apparently you either wrote the wrong number or it smudged.
“Okay let’s have everyone return to their bases. Team One will adjust their flag and we will start again.” Namjoon says after a beat of silence and realization. “Can you two get yourselves under control?” He adds under his breath.
“Yeah.” You and Hoseok reply in unison. He meets your eye and for the first time all summer, they look like the eyes you fell for last year. Soft, sweet, welcoming.
You can’t quite focus during the rest of the game. You’re really just processing the information you’ve just learned. Once the game is finished (Team Three managed to grab Team One’s flag), the campers all head to their cabins to wash up for dinner. Hoseok is hanging back to collect the equipment, but since Mack is out today, you have to go with the kids back to the cabins.
“So, you’re basically saying that he never ghosted you and you’ve both been being stupid all summer?” Margo asks, mouth full of pizza.
“Yes.” You confirm. The girls at the table are engrossed in their own conversations, so you and Margo can talk about the events of the day. She looks over your shoulder and across the Mess Hall to Hoseok’s table.
“So, can y’all start dating now?” Margo questions.
“He still has a girlfriend as far as I know, so no I don’t think so.” You reply. The pizza on your plate doesn’t seem very appetizing. You can’t stop thinking about how one small mistake has messed things up so much. Misunderstanding or not, Hoseok has moved on already.
“He’s coming over here.” Margo says, almost choking on her drink.
“What?” You gasp, but it’s too late. Hoseok has made an appearance at your table. He is standing, waiting for your attention.
“Hey, could you meet me at the lake tonight? After lights out?” Hoseok whispers so the campers at the table can’t hear it. The quiet tone of his voice sends a chill down your spine.
You can’t form words, but you nod, agreeing to meet him later.
~~~~~~~
The sun sets, the lights go out, and you are exhausted. The anger that has been fueling you for the past few weeks has fizzled out. You’re not sure what to expect from Hoseok at the lake. Probably an apology. You hope he’ll apologize for being a dick to you and calling you a bitch.
Despite your heavy eyelids, you slip on your shoes and quietly leave your cabin. When you arrive at the edge of the beach, you can see Hoseok standing out by the water’s edge. He’s facing the lake, watching the last slivers of sunlight disappear. Crossing the sand, you close the gap between you and stand next to him.
“I’m sorry I called you a bitch.” He says.
“I forgive you.” You reply. You probably should offer up an apology of your own, but you get the feeling he has more to say when he turns to face you.
“I made her up.” He says. “I don’t actually have a girlfriend back home. I just wanted to save face after finding out you gave me the wrong number. Or well, you know what I mean.”
“So, you’re still single?” You ask.
“Yeah, I am.” He replies.
You can’t help the laughter that bursts out of you. Maybe it’s the only way your body can react to the mix of emotions and relief you’re feeling right now. Hoseok looks a little dumbfounded by your reaction, so you just decide to do the one thing you’ve been dreaming about for the past year. You grab his face with both of your hands and lean in to kiss him.
It doesn’t take long for Hoseok to catch up. He grabs your waist and pulls your body toward his and deepens the kiss. It has been a year since you’ve felt his full lips pressed against yours, but somehow it feels like all that time is being erased.
Hoseok’s hand slips under your top, his fingers gently gracing your skin. His lips travel down the side of your face to your neck. You decide to throw caution to the wind and pull away to take off your top. Hoseok follows suit, taking off his shirt to reveal his toned stomach.
You lightly drag your finger nails down his stomach and he sucks in a breath. The action drives him to sit on the ground and to tug on your shorts. You follow him to lay on the sand. It won’t be fun to clean up later, but it doesn’t matter. You need to feel his body against yours.
Before you can think about it, you are on top of him. Each of you exploring the other’s body with your hands. It’s familiar, but novel at the same time. Hoseok grabs your breast over the fabric of your sports bra and it sends a jolt to your core.
“Is this okay?” He asks, pulling away to catch his breath.
“Yes, I want you so bad Hobi.” You reply, and he’s on you again. He pulls down your shorts, and discards them. His fingers trail your body from your belly button down to your pelvis. His touch gives you shivers and when he comes in contact with your wet slit, you gasp.
He circles your clit a few times, spreading the wetness around before he takes over with his tongue. Licking at your most sensitive spots. He sucks on your clit, making you moan loudly before he releases you.
“Please, Hobi.” You urge. Hoseok pulls away, leaving you almost fully exposed on the beach. He returns quickly, now fully exposed himself.
“Ready?” He asks, positioning himself over you. You nod frantically, body anticipating the feeling you’ve been missing since last summer. Hoseok leans forward, teasing you with the tip of his hard cock. The moan you let out convinces him to slip it in just a little.
He continues slowly, painfully slow. When he’s almost all the way inside you, he pulls back again and begins to find his rhythm. Your arms are wrapped firmly around his body, pulling him as close as you can as he thrusts into you. The feeling is so full and so good that you clench around him. He groans and you know it won’t be long before you’re both climaxing.
As his rhythm begins to become uneven, you can tell he’s close. You drop your hand from his body and find your clit, helping yourself get there at the same time as him. He stops his hips and you can feel him cumming inside your throbbing pussy.
“Hobi!” You call his name as you’re pushed over the edge. After giving you a moment to come down from your high, he pulls out of you and lays flat on his back. He pulls you over to lay against his muscular chest.
“That was amazing.” He smiles.
“Yeah it was.” You nod in agreement, still feeling the phantom motion of your bodies.
“I can’t believe we could've been doing that all summer.” He laments, gently rubbing your back.
“Well we’ve got the last three weeks of summer. We’ll just have to go back to Cabin 13 like we did last year. I do not like having sand in my crevices.”
“Oh hell no. We are never going anywhere near that place. It’s haunted.” Hoseok replies.
“Oh yeah, about that...”

Camp Blue Side - Part One - Part Two - Part Three - Part Four
~~~~~~~
How did it come to this?
You are walking slowly to the camp office where you will meet with Hoseok and the LCT. The two of you will likely be reprimanded, but could she fire you? Would she fire you halfway through camp? She’s had a stick up her ass all summer, but would she actually go as far to remove you from Team Two?
This isn’t who you are, the yelling and screaming. But the competition, wanting to crush Hoseok, has affected you too much. It’s affecting the kids too, and it honestly makes you sick. As you drag your feet to the meeting, the events of the past three weeks unfold clearly in your mind.
~~~~~~~
Kick Ball
“Who wants to beat Team One?!” You shout to a crowd of campers, and they cheer in response. You’ve got a great group of campers this year. It’s still day one, so everyone is still pumped and not too tired to give it their all.
Jessica, an athletic 13 year old, is up to pitch the kickball to Team One’s first kicker. The anticipation builds as she finds her grip on the rubber ball. Hoseok is muttering something to his kicker, some kind of pep talk as he walks up to the plate.
“Great pitch!” Mack yells as Jessica throws the ball down to home plate. Hoseok’s kicker strikes himself out and you’ve never been so stoked to see a child fail to kick a ball. You wouldn’t let them see it, but you’re beaming inside.
“Yes! Great job Jessica!” You cheer from the sidelines.
“That’s alright Braden, you’ll get it next time buddy!” Hoseok comforts his kicker as he returns to the back of the line. You feel a little tug on your shirt and look behind you to see a short boy looking up at you. What is his name again?
“Y/N, can I pitch in the next inning?” The scrawny boy asks. Jessica has already managed to strike someone out, taking her off the pitching mound would risk the game.
“Well, uh, champ, let’s see how Jessica does and then we’ll decide, okay?” As the words come out of your mouth, you feel dirty. You know this isn’t what camp is about.
But Jessica strikes out two more players from Hoseok’s team before they can score any points. Hoseok has his back turned to you, talking to his players, but Yeonjun looks frustrated already and that feels fucking great.
“Let’s keep it going! Who are my strong kickers?” You ask everyone, not addressing the camper in front of you again. The boy sulks away, and doesn’t ask to pitch again.
~~~~~~~
Egg & Spoon Race
An American classic event, the egg and spoon race. It is simple, but by no means is it easy. Especially not when the spoons are held by uncoordinated children. Luckily, Seokjin protested the waste of real eggs and the kids are using ping pong balls instead. So at least there won’t be a huge mess.
The first week of camp is almost over and you’ve had the chance to get to know your campers a little more. Currently they are taking turns running down the field with the spoon. They have to run down the field and come back to tag the next person in line. So far, they are pretty even with their opponents, Team One and Team Three.
“Hey, Y/N, Jakobi said he doesn’t want to do this activity, what should I do?” Mack asks.
Jakobi, poor Jakobi. He was the kid that you turned down for pitching in kickball earlier this week.
“I’ll go talk to him.” You reply. He is standing out of the line of campers, and you jog over to him. “Hey buddy, what’s going on?”
“I don’t want to play this game.” He sulks. “I’m not fast enough.” His explanation hits you in the chest. This is your fault, isn’t it?
“This game isn’t about being fast! It’s about having a steady hand.” You reply cheerfully.
“What do you mean?” He asks, looking up at you with his big brown eyes.
“Here, hold your hands out like this.” You put your hands out in front of you, and he follows suit. “See, your hands are frozen, not moving at all! You won’t drop the egg, and that’s more important than being fast.”
Jakobi, pleased with this response, gets back in line and waits for his turn to help the team. You hadn’t been paying attention to the race for a few minutes, but it looks like your team has actually managed to pull ahead of Hoseok’s.
“Alright Jakobi! You got this!” You cheer as he gets tagged in. Jakobi begins walking down the field. Slowly. “Maybe a little faster, champ!” You cheer again.
“You said I could go slow!” He stops in the middle of the field to talk to you.
“You can, you can! Just keep going please.” You try to reassure him, but you know the smile isn’t convincing.
“Ja-kob-i. Ja-kob-i.” You begin chanting, and the rest of your team does as well. Jakobi, still walking at a slow pace, makes it to the end of the field without dropping the egg, now he’s just got to make it back.
Unfortunately, Hoseok’s team is now on their last few campers. You look over and see Hoseok grinning like a fool. He’s pleased because he knows he’s going to win. You can feel the urge to scream at Jakobi to run, but before you do you lock eyes with him.
He’s beaming.
“I didn’t drop it!” Jakobi celebrates as he finally returns to his team and tags the next person in line.
“You did a great job Jakobi!” You smile and give him a high-five. Your team may lose this game, but at least they all played.
Team One’s last player crosses the finish line, then Team Three’s, then Team Two’s. The winning team cheers gleefully, celebrating their victory. The campers disperse from today’s Team Game and head to their cabins to get ready for dinner.
Hoseok is collecting the supplies from the game to return to the equipment. Your kids handed you the spoon and ping pong ball, so you have to hand it over to him. He’s already walking toward you to gather the supplies.
He’s wearing a white tank top and his beige bucket hat. Somehow he makes it look like high fashion. Just a few days into camp and he’s already gotten a tan. His golden skin glows in the sunlight.
“Hey Y/N, great game.” He laughs, words dripping with sarcasm. You stop about five feet away from him and drop the spoon and ping pong ball on the grass before walking away. “Come on, don’t be a sore loser.”’
“Don’t be a sore winner, Hobi.”
It stops you dead in your tracks. The nickname that you called him last summer just slipped out in your frustration. A lump forms in your throat, and before you can even think about what to do, your feet are running away from him.
~~~~~~~
The Prank
Early in the week, a few counselor’s decided to sneak into cabin 13. Of course Jimin and Jungkook were involved, along with the two female counselor’s they’ve been wooing. Seokjin told you that they were found out because they ran screaming from the cabin after they saw a ghost.
Cabin 13, the long abandoned cabin at the edge of camp, has been used for smoking weed, secret rendezvous, and pranks. Officially, it’s on standby in case the infirmary fills up or if something contagious breaks out.
Several times last summer, you and Hoseok snuck out about a couple hours after lights out to chill and smoke weed. The weed he brought to camp wasn’t very strong, so it really just took the edge of things. The conversations you had there are what cemented your romance. He loved to talk about the stars and what lies beyond them, and it filled the air with mystery.
“Guys, guys! Guess what!” Ryujin approaches you and Seokjin outside the Mess Hall, just after dinner.
“What is it? I don’t like to guess.” Seokjin responds.
“Yeonjun asked me to meet him at cabin 13.” She’s beaming. Her excitement reminds you of the feeling you had when Hoseok first asked you to go there with him.
“Shh!” Seokjin hushes her. “Don’t let anyone hear you say that. Especially not those two.” He adds, pointing at Namjoon and the LCT.
“What? I thought you guys went there.”
“Yeah, sometimes. It’s an open secret, but you still don’t want to get caught there.” You explain.
“Being out past curfew is technically against the rules too, and Namjoon is a stickler for it.” Seokjin adds.
“Oh, well... Hoseok will be there too, he goes there like twice a week. We’ll be careful!” Ryujin turns and walks away.
“Did you hear that Jin?” You ask, a devious smile spreading across your face.
“Oh god, what are you thinking?” Seokjin replies nervously.
“Well, as Lead Counselor of this fine establishment, I think you should be in charge of ghost hunting.”
“Ghost hunting?” He questions.
It wasn’t quite ghost hunting you had in mind, actually. But manufacturing a ghost. One thing you know about Hoseok is that he firmly believes in spirits. It’s honestly surprising that he’s still willing to visit cabin 13 after Jungkook claimed to have seen a ghost there.
A little after midnight, Seokjin taps lightly on the door of your cabin. You open the door slowly and tiptoe out, white sheet in tow.
“What is that? They’re not gonna fall for that.” Seokjin whispers.
“Yes they will, once we prime them for it.” You respond.
Sneaking across camp is a little nerve-racking, but you manage to make it to the side of camp with the boys cabin and then to the north side of camp when cabin 13 is located. You hold up your hand to stop Seokjin from moving any closer.
Holding a finger up to your lip, you signal him to be quiet so you can listen. You can hear giggling coming from the dark cabin, they’re in there.
“Let’s move.” Your whisper is barely audible.
As you approach the cabin, you can hear the group more clearly. Yeonjun is giggling and Ryujin is coughing. Hoseok, is muttering something you can’t make out. His voice is monotone, mellow. Seokjin and you lean up against the side of the cabin, under the window on the back wall.
“Okay so what’s the plan?” Seokjin whispers.
“We’re going to start by making scratching noises and thumping noises, then you’ll get in position.” You explain.
“What do you mean I’ll be getting into position?!” Seokjin whisper-shouts.
“Shh! Did you hear that?” Hoseok asks from inside the cabin.
“No, what was it?” Yeonjun asks, holding back his giggles.
“Just thought I heard something.”
Seokjin rolls his eyes and takes the sheet and wraps it around his shoulders. You search the ground and pick up a stray stick. You tap it against the wall a few times, but there’s no reaction from it. Instead of tapping it, you decide to scrape it against the wall slowly.
“Okay I heard it that time too.” Ryujin says.
“There must be something outside.” Hoseok replies, voice wavering.
“Yeah, it’s probably just an animal.” Yeonjun says.
You motion for Seokjin to cover himself with the sheet and crouch in front of the window, ready to jump. There is some whispering inside, so you decide to bang your fist against the wall loudly.
“Fuck!” Hoseok shouts.
“Just look out the window, it’s an animal!” Yeonjun replies. You hear some hesitant footsteps inching closer, then Seokjin springs up from the ground.
“GHOST!” Hoseok wails, and then you can hear the three of them scrambling to get out of the door on the other side of the cabin. The footsteps fade away as they sprint back to their respective cabins.
You and Seokjin fall on the ground, shaking with laughter.
“I can’t believe it worked” Seokjin gasps for air between laughs.
You stand from the ground after the laughter settles. Standing on your toes, you peer into the cabin window.
“Oh shit he left his bag of blunts! He must have really been scared.”
The two of you walk around to the front of the cabin and inspect the cabin. There’s a few empty beer cans and chip bags and the bag of blunts.
“Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” You say, and Seokjin smiles.

Red Rover
In the heat of the afternoon, your campers are lined up across the field from their competitors, Team One. After a long day of singing, crafting, and other various outdoor activities, your campers are exhausted. It’s a triple digit day, and even you can’t deny that you’re feeling sluggish.
Red rover is a simple enough game, but Team One has more older boys and you’re afraid that your team won’t stand a chance, especially when they would much rather be cooling off in their cabins. Mack is currently attempting to give everyone a pep talk.
“I think we’re ready, Team One!” Mack yells across the field to Hoseok and Yeonjun. Both groups of campers hold hands with each other and prepare to hang on tight.
“Y’all won the last game, so go ahead and start us off!” Yeonjun announces.
“Let’s call for Tony.” You say in a loud whisper to your campers. You don’t trust them to pick an appropriate runner from the other team.
“Let them play.” Mack hisses at you. You look over at him, puzzled. “They are tired and you just need to let them play.” He must be grumpy from the heat.
“Fine, fine.” You raise your arms defensively.
“Red rover, red rover, let Tony come over!” Team Two shouts in unison. Tony, one of the smaller boys on Team One, does his best to sprint the distance between the two lines of campers. He tries his best, but does not manage to break through the bond on Team Two, so he is added to the line.
“Red rover red rover, let Hyuka come over!” Team One’s rebuttal is to take another small boy. Team Two naturally cheers for Hyuka as he runs over to Team One and he is successful in breaking through. He grabs a member of Team One and drags them over to your team.
“Great job guys! Keep it up!” You’re a little surprised that your team is actually winning right now.
After a few more rounds of red rover, the kids are really starting to sweat in the heat. But Team Two is still winning! Even after Jessica got taken into Team One.
“Hey campers, why don’t we go ahead and grab some ice pops in the Mess Hall!” Namjoon enthuses, practically sneaking up behind you.
“What? No! We’re winning!” You protest.
“Y/N,” Namjoon says, tilting his head at you. “It’s over one hundred degrees out here.”
“Ah... yes. Let’s go inside!” It’s embarrassing to let Namjoon catch you not putting the kids first. Even more embarrassing to watch him write something down his clipboard before motioning for the campers to follow him back to the Mess Hall.
“God, can you believe that?” You whisper to Mack, letting a good amount of distance fall between you and the flock of campers.
“You know, I honestly can’t believe you.” Mack stops in his tracks, glaring at you.
“What?” You gulp.
“Listen, you know I want to win games as much as the next guy, but you’re not putting campers first anymore. We’re almost halfway through the summer and you’re letting your stupid competition with Hoseok ruin the summer for our kids. I’m tired of it, Y/N.”
You’re completely speechless. You’ve never heard Mack yell at anyone before and now here he is, and Junior Counselor, berating you for ruining the summer?
“Just do better.” Mack says before jogging to catch up with the campers.
~~~~~~~
Freeze Tag
“If you see one of your teammates get frozen, make sure you help them get unfrozen. Does everyone understand?” All the campers agree to the rules of the game, and to the small bit of strategy you offered up.
This time, your team isn’t just up against Team One, but Team Three as well. It’s every man for himself, last man standing, truly a free for all. Though, you’re not too worried about Team Three. Their leaders are... distracted.
One of them is a young JC and the other is Jungkook’s new love interest. You don’t envy her. Every girl at this camp, campers and counselors, want a shot at Jungkook, but she’s the one who caught his eye. She did have an unfair advantage though, they were childhood friends or something like that.
“Ready, set, go!” The LCT yells and then blows her shiny whistle. The kids are off, scrambling every which way, trying not to get tagged. You are watching your campers closely, but they are getting tagged left and right.
“AVERY!” You shout at the top of your lungs. “Nikki is on your team, you don’t have to freeze! And Nikki, don’t tag your teammates! Ugh!” You should rather loudly. You shake your head and continue watching your team. You notice Hoseok talking to the LCT and she jots down something on her obnoxiously decorated clipboard.
She looks up from her notes and over at you, giving you a little nod. She walks away, clipboard in hand and you have a feeling she’ll be observing your activities a little more closely. Hoseok turns his attention back to the game.
His team is doing well, only a few of them seem to be frozen and the rest are still zooming around the field. Your team, however, is not following your advice. They’re too worried about being tagged to find teammates to unfreeze.
“Jessica, can you please go unfreeze some of your teammates?” You say as Jessica runs by your post. She stops and turns back to you.
“What did you say?” She asks.
“I said go unfreeze your teammates! Wait, look out!” Just as you’re explaining yourself, a Team Three camper comes up behind Jessica and freezes her. You let out a sigh. “That’s alright Jessica.”
“It’s just a game! Hopefully someone will come by and freeze you!” Mack jogs up to where you and Jessica are standing. “It’s just a game.” He says again, directly to you this time. He’s annoyed.
“I know you’re right, I just want to win.” You sigh.
“Well we have already lost. All of our campers are frozen.” Mack replies.
“WHAT!” You screech. Mack puts a firm hand on your shoulder as a reminder of his earlier words. You try to take a deep breath and you search the field to find Hoseok. He’s looking back at you, a smug grin on his face.
~~~~~~~
Flag Football
The rules of traditional American football have always gone over your head. The flag version of the game is a little more simple, but you still opt to let Hoseok explain the game to both teams. You’re listening intently to his explanation, and he’s doing an annoyingly good job of putting it in terms that the kids (and you) can understand.
Once his explanation is completed, all four team leaders help the campers put on their flag belts. They could probably do it themselves, but everyone wants to make sure that the belts are as secure as possible.
“Huddle up!” Mack calls to your team and everyone forms a circle around him as he doles out assignments for offensive players and defensive players. He was very insistent on doing this part himself. Perhaps it’s because he’s a football buff, but it seems more likely that he wants to evenly spread the assignments and doesn’t trust you to do it.
Mack has been taking more of a leadership role on the team because he thinks you are compromising the team due to your own selfish desire to win. It’s hard to admit, but you know he’s right to some degree.
The teams are lined up across the field from each other, Team One starting with the ball. Your team’s defensive line up is good. Yeonjun blows his whistle and the game begins. Bodies are running all around the field, every which way.
The kids are just aiming to grab flags, they aren’t being strategic at all. They are snapping flags left and right and before Team One can get their ball very far, more than half the field has been de-flagged.
“Wow, their lack of strategy is actually working for them this time.” You laugh.
“Yeah, it’s amazing what happens when you let kids be kids.” Mack chides.
You sulk away from him and walk down to the other end of the field to get some distance. From here, you’ve got a great view of Hoseok. Always wearing his bucket hat.
Suddenly, the whistle blows loudly and Hoseok sprints to the middle of the field where you notice that one of his kids is down. He’s clutching his knee and holding back tears. Hoseok runs to the child and takes a look at the injury.
It can’t be more than a scratch, but Hoseok scoops the camper up in his arms and walks him off the field. He comes to the Team Two side, simply because it’s the fastest way to get off the field.
“Do you want me to take you to the nurse to get a band aid or an ice pack?” He asks as he sets down the camper.
“No, I think I’m okay. Can I just sit out for now?” The camper replies.
“Of course you can, I’ll sit over here with you until it’s time to get ready for dinner.” Hoseok pats the camper’s back.
Mack walks over to see how things are going and chats with Hoseok for a moment. He gives you a look.
“Are you taking notes?” He asks you loudly, in front of Hoseok and everyone. If you could give him the middle finger, you would.
~~~~~~~
The Obstacle Course
The heat between Team One and Team Two has hit an all time high. Earlier this week, your team scored bonus points by staying in the Mess Hall after dinner to scrub the tables after a particularly messy spaghetti night. But after hearing about this, Hoseok decided his team would take some of their free time to tidy up and organize the equipment storage room. This earned Team One even more points.
You’re determined to take him down at today’s obstacle course. It’s already been set up by Seokjin when the teams arrive. The LCT is here to observe the event.
There are different obstacle courses almost every week. This week, it’s your turn to demonstrate the steps for the kids. Crab walk here, hula hoop, hop on one leg, weave, run, skip, and sprint back to the start.
Once the demonstration has been completed, and you are thoroughly sweaty, Hoseok announces that he will flip a coin to see who gets to start off on the practice round.
“Heads, Team One, tails, Team Two!” You yell over at Hoseok and the LCT who are searching for a coin. She has one in her pocket and she flips the coin. Come on tails!
“Going first is... Team Two!” The LCT says, and you cheer. You always like having the edge and going first, even if it is just a practice round for now.
“Alright, Team Two, in a line!” You shout, leading the campers to the starting point. You decide to go through it again, showing them how it’s done one more time. Leading by example, pointing on the tricky parts as you go.
Hoseok is watching you closely. He’s learning too. When it’s his team’s turn to do a practice run of the course, he stands to the side and let’s them run it themselves. He points out the hard parts and cheers them on as they go. It’s frustrating how natural he is at these things.
Hoseok’s team lines back up, going first for the timed speed round. You feel nervous, you know they got through faster than your team, some of them are tired out now, so it will come down to can your campers pull this off and win?
“Alright, Team One, let’s go!” Hoseok cheers and his kids cheer back, letting him know they’re ready. “LCT - you’ve got the stopwatch!” He looks over at the LCT who is either doodling or jotting down notes on her colorful clipboard.
“Oh!” She says, grabbing her phone in her pocket. “Is this Grease? Do I wave a flag?”
“Just count down and say go.” You respond, rolling your eyes at her reference.
“On your mark, get set, go!” She yells.
Hoseok’s team gets off to a good start, but they have a few fumbles. Someone trips and another is painfully bad at hula hooping. It takes everything in you not to do a happy dance when one of Team One’s campers stops in the middle of his turn to slowly tie his shoe back up.
When it’s time again for your team’s turn, they all line up at the front. You and Mack cheer for them to get them hyped up, and now all you can do is hope for the best.
So far, not bad. They are all doing their best and that is surprisingly good. By your own mental clock, they are not far behind Hoseok. After Nikki finishes, Matthew will be up next, and of course you’re a little nervous. He’s notoriously clumsy, but he’s done fairly well this summer. Jessica is behind him and she will likely make up for any time he loses.
Matthew starts off strong with the crab walk, but anything that takes place on two feet slows him down a bit. The backwards running, though, is what takes him down. He trips and lands on his back on the grass.
“Get up!” You shout, trying your very best to sound encouraging. Get up! Keep going, come on! Just a step further! You can do it Matthew, come on!” By the time you finish your encouragement, it’s turned to full blown yelling. But Matthew is refusing to get up and he’s started crying.
You turn away for a moment, rubbing your eyes in frustration. At Matthew and at yourself.
“You can’t yell at a kid!” Hoseok snaps at you as he runs over to Matthew to comfort him. All of your team has huddle around him on the ground by the time you walk over.
“I didn’t! I thought he could have still gotten up!” You reply defensively.
“You yelled at him!” Hoseok reiterates.
“You yelled too!”
“I did not!” Hoseok replies, defending himself against your claim.
“You did! You’re the reason why we’re -”
“Leaders!” The LCT shouts from her post about ten feet away. You’re in trouble now.
“Yeah?” You ask, already tucking your tail between your legs.
“What’s up?” Hoseok asks.
“During your breaks, I will see you both in my office. Do not go to your cabins, do not hop to the Mess Hall for snack, do not stop and talk to anyone unless they are Seokjin or Namjoon, do you understand?” She is breathing fire. Scolding you in front of your campers. It’s embarrassing, but you can’t say you don’t deserve it.
Hoseok agrees and you can barely get a word out, so you just nod and mutter an agreement. The LCT instructs you to get back to the campers. Mack has already started walking Matthew to the infirmary.
Your campers look concerned, so you offer them a heartfelt apology. Hoseok suggests that everyone lines up together, both teams, and does one last run through the obstacle course for fun. You agree.
~~~~~~~
The Meeting
You know you deserve to be here at this meeting. Standing outside the office, you have a hard time taking any further steps. You don’t know what fate awaits you behind that door and you are not looking forward to finding out. Especially with Hoseok sitting next to you.
“Hey.” You jump. It’s Hoseok. “We should go in.” He says.
You take a deep breath and turn to look at him. Your competitor, your enemy, and previously your lover. His eyes are soft. He doesn’t look angry, just tired. He reaches past you and opens the door to the LCT’s office and let’s you step in first.
“Sit.” She says before you even have a moment to take in your surroundings. You’ve never been in this office before. You and Hoseok both slide into the chairs in front of the desk. She pauses for a moment and you look around the room. It’s just an office with supplies and paperwork. The only thing in the office that has any personality is the clipboards hanging on the wall behind her. A collection of decorated and personalized clipboards. How nerdy.
“Let’s talk about what hap -” The LCT starts.
“I just want to say that - that I didn’t mean to yell at him, and that I’m -” You cut her off, wanting to get ahead of the scolding. You know you’re in the wrong here.
“Do you plan on interrupting me this entire time?” She snaps at you, and you sit back in your chair, a little caught off guard.
“I’m sorry, I just, I made a mistake and I’m sorry.” You try again.
“Sorry for interrupting me or sorry for your behavior on the field?” She interrogates you.
“Both?” You reply, a little dumbfounded by her attitude. “I was just -”
“I don’t care what you were ‘just.’” She stops you again. You know you deserve punishment, but who pissed in her fruit salad? “What I witnessed today on the field was completely unacceptable. There is no situation, no occasion at Camp Blue Side where how you two interacted and treated your campers is acceptable. You are so lucky I was the one who witnessed it, instead of Seokjin or Namjoon.”
Hoseok is fidgeting next to you, but you’re paralyzed. You’ve never been spoken to like this from someone you considered a peer. And she’s wrong, if Seokjin had seen it, he would’ve been on your side.
“You are also so unbelievably lucky that your camper isn’t too scarred from your blatant disregard for his wellbeing. You must’ve been graced by the gods today, that all he suffered was a bump on his head and a scratched arm, because if it had been worse, a concussion, a broken bone, a skull fracture, there could’ve been legal ramifications.” She pauses and sighs before continuing. “I cannot believe that either of you have worked yourselves up to such a high level of competition and competitiveness that this was the result.”
“I didn’t mean to yell.” You whimper.
“We’re sorry it got out of hand.” Hoseok sighs.
“I feel awful.” You add.
“We were too into it.” Hoseok sighs, shaking his head.
“I don’t care what you were. That’s the inherent problem with you two, and I knew, I knew this was a possibility of having you on opposing teams, but I hoped it wouldn’t happen. I hoped you would be mature enough to handle this.”
“Hoped?” Hoseok questions.
“Yes, because clearly not only was I wrong, but Seokjin and Namjoon too. I don’t know what’s going on between the two of you, if it’s just tension, or some sexual repression, but what happened on that field is not Camp Blue Side.” Her words send a chill down your spine and a blush across your cheeks. How could she say that in front of him?
“You both have been here long enough to know what’s acceptable Camp behavior and what isn’t. I never thought I’d have to have this conversation with you, but this summer is full of nasty surprises. Do better, both of you. Now, get out.”
You and Hoseok waste no time in exiting that office and shutting the door behind you. All you want to do is run back to your cabin and bury your face in the pillow. But you know you owe Hoseok an apology.
“I’m sorry.”
“You better fucking be sorry.” Hoseok replies, bitterness coating his tongue. “And that will never happen again.” He adds before walking away.
It’s a slap in the face on top of a punch to the gut. You are guilty, there is no denying that, but you aren’t the only one. How dare he act like he didn’t start this whole thing. He ghosted you. All he had to do was say “Hey, sorry, I'm actually not interested.” But he didn’t even have the balls to do that.
You have to tone down the competitiveness, but this is certainly not over.

Camp Blue Side - Part One - Part Two - Part Three - Part Four
~~~~~~~
The staff parking lot is filled with cars and this year’s counselors are celebrating each other’s arrival. Each time a new car pulls up, usually honking loudly, the group cheers. Just about everyone has arrived already, Namjoon is fiddling with his clipboard and pen. Everyone should have been here by now.
Hoseok arrived about ten minutes ago. His beat up old mazda pulled up and you did your best not to look in his direction, only stealing a glance as he exited the car. The only way to describe that man is bright. Neon green shoes, rainbow tye-dye shirt, and his dazzling heart-shaped smile.
Somehow, he was even more beautiful than you remembered. You had spent the past school year hating him, but now he’s here, in the flesh, and you just want to feel his arms around you. You tore your eyes away from Hoseok, and you felt Seokjin’s hand on your shoulder. It grounded you back in reality.
As the final car, holding Jimin and Jungkook, pulls up, half-hearted cheers ring through the crowd. Not that you aren’t all excited to see Jimin and Jungkook, but no one likes to see an angry Namjoon.
“Hey! It’s Jimin’s fault, okay? I even got to his place early!” Jungkook jumps out of the car, hands held defensively in front of his body. Jimin, screaming his rebuttal from inside the car, is cut off by Namjoon’s announcement.
“Now that everyone is finally here, we will give cabin assignments and you can all get settled in before dinner.” Seokjin, standing a good two feet away from Namjoon, produces a clipboard from his backpack and begins listing off the cabin assignments. Two counselors of the same gender identity per cabin.
Of course, you already know who your cabin mate will be this year. You’ve learned a lot of privileged information by arriving early with Seokjin.
“Margo! Hey! We’re paired up this year in Cabin 2.” You whisper, not wanting to speak over your friend.
“Oh hey, that’s awesome! Let’s go!” Margo picks up one of her bags and you reach to grab the other. The two of you walk off to Cabin 2, making casual small talk about the past year away from Camp.
You were stoked to see a familiar name next to yours on the cabin list. Although you and Margo barely kept up with each other over the summer, you had gotten to know her quite well the year before. She was a first year counselor, and you were only a second year. You knew what it was like to feel alone, so you tried to take her under your wing and show her the ropes.
She ended up being a great person to talk to about your crush on Hoseok, and well now you have a lot of tea to spill.
“And he just... never called? Or texted?” Margo asks, eyes wide in disbelief.
“Nope.”
“But he’s here now.”
“Yep.”
“And you’re going to be competing against him in team competitions.”
“Exactly.” You share a devious smile.
“This is going to be an interesting summer, isn’t it?” Your cabin mate asks with a sigh.
“You bet your ass it is.”
~~~~~~~
After Margo got her belongings unpacked and stowed away, the two of you head to the Mess Hall for dinner and to catch up with your fellow counselors. You’d be lying if you said you weren’t nervous to see Hoseok and to have to explain to everyone why the two of you weren’t... together.
But it appears that Hoseok may already be handling that himself. A group of male counselors are sitting at a table where he is recounting some tale, and they are all listening intently.
You can’t quite make out what he is saying, but you spot Seokjin sitting at a different table with Yoongi and a young guy you don’t recognize. Must be Yeonjun, the new JC who will be co-leading Team One with Hoseok. You’ll be keeping an eye on him. Seokjin waves you over and Margo follows you.
“What has he been telling everyone?” You hiss at the guys when you sit.
“Well...” Seokjin starts and your heart begins to sink. You know that tone.
“He’s got a new girlfriend.” Yoongi says, ripping the bandaid off in one swift motion. It stings. “He’s been bragging about her to all the guys. She’s hot and they met at work, or something like that.” He adds.
“Ah.” You try to breathe through the feeling of your stomach dropping out, and Margo pats your bag gently. You spent the past year hoping he would call, processing the fact that he wasn’t going to, and burning with righteous fury. And now... you just want to cry.
But you can’t let anyone see you cry. Especially not here and not now. Hoseok may have hurt you, but you can’t let him know you’re in pain.
“Alright everyone, while we’re waiting on our dinner, let’s pair up in our activity groups and get to know each other a little better!” Namjoon announces and the room begins to buzz as everyone finds the people they would be working with this summer.
You look around for Margo’s twin brother, Mack. He is going to be your co-leader for Team Two this year.
“Hey Y/N!” Mack says, extending his hand for a fist bump.
“What’s up! You excited to crush Team Two and Team Three this year?” You may be over-enthusing to make sure you don’t seem... sad.
“Yeah! I’m sure you are too. Especially to beat Hoseok’s team.” Gulp.
“I do love some friendly competition, haha.” You reply dryly.
“Well aren’t you guys together?”
“Uh...” you pause, color draining from your face.
“Oh god. I’m so sorry. He was talking about some awesome girl he’s been dating. I only caught part of the conversation, I thought he was talking about you.” Mack, looking mortified, tries to explain himself.
“No, it’s okay. He ghosted me. I haven't heard from him since last summer.” You clarify. Mack looks so sorry he mentioned it.
“Well I guess we really do have to beat his team now, don’t we?” He says with a smirk.
While Mack makes some more small talk about the plan for the coming weeks, your eyes scan the room. Everyone is paired off in their little teams. Yoongi is with Xavier, his Music co-leader, Taehyung with his Arts & Crafts co-leader, but his eyes are across the room on the Lead Counselor in Training who is chatting with Namjoon and taking notes on her clipboard. You spot Hoseok all the way on the furthest side of the Mess Hall from you. He’s talking to Yeonjun, facing away from you and that feels intentional.
When the cook, Heather, steps out of the kitchen with a large sheet pan full of pizza, the counselors cheer. Then they immediately run to get in line, but before they can be served, Heather goes back into the kitchen.
“How are you doing?” Seokjin asks, lining up behind you.
“Fine, Jin. Just fine.”
“So, not fine, then?” He quips, laying a hand on your shoulder.
“He’s gotten ahead of the narrative.” You reply, but he gives you a puzzled look. “He’s already told everyone about a girl and now I just look... pathetic.”
“You’re not pathetic, Y/N.” Seokjin replies, giving your shoulder a pat.
Heather returns from the kitchen with a tray of side salads and a tray of desserts, a choice between a sugar cookie and chocolate pudding.
Unsurprisingly, you can see that Hoseok has secured a spot at the front of the line. Against your will, you watch him closely. He grabs his pizza, two slices, grabs a side salad, and reaches for a pudding cup. Something in your stomach twists, and you just want to get out of there.
“Hey, where are you going?” Seokjin asks, but you’re already out the door.
You try to hold back tears as you walk toward your cabin.
He used to give you his chocolate puddings. Who is he going to give it to now? Why would he pick it up if he doesn’t even like them.
When you make it back to the cabin, you throw yourself onto your bunk and let the tears flow into the pillow. Seeing Hoseok has been harder than you anticipated.
~~~~~~~
“Hey, Y/N, you okay?” Margo asks, tiptoeing into the cabin.
“Yeah, you should head back, isn’t everyone still hanging out?” You ask, bring your head up from the pillow. It’s dark outside already.
“Well, no. It’s kind of late. Did you eat anything?” She asks.
“Yeah, I had a protein bar.” You reply, but your stomach growls, as if to say, that wasn’t enough. Margo reaches into her bag and pulls out a package of oreos, holding it in your direction.
You cave, holding your palm open for a handful of the cookies. Your nearly empty stomach accepts the sweet treat and settles.
“Did everyone notice I left, they must think I’m so pathetic.” You pout.
“You wanna know what everyone noticed?” You nod in response to Margo’s question. “Everyone noticed that Hoseok left as soon as he realized you were gone.”
~~~~~~~
CPR training is a vital part of the yearly annual counselor training. Everyone needs to know how to resuscitate and potentially save the lives of the campers. Though it is a very serious topic, it’s hard to take the CPR dummies seriously. The faceless, limbless, lifeless dolls look very much like... blow up dolls.
“If I hear one more moan out of you guys I will dock your pay!” Namjoon shouts over the chorus of immaturity. Very suddenly, the room goes quiet, “I thought that might get your attention, now Seokjin, please continue with the demonstration.”
“Yes sir.” Seokjin replies, holding back a smirk.
He begins pumping the inanimate heart to the beat of a song and your eyes wander to Hoseok across the room. He’s giggling and whispering something to Yeonjun. Those boys will be fierce competition.
It’s something you thought about this morning on your run. As you were jogging on the wooded trail, you realized Mack was right, you have to do everything in your power to take Team One down. The fire of competition will get you through the sadness of Hoseok’s betrayal. And tonight, you’ll get your first shot at beating them in the game of glow in the dark capture the flag.
Standing from his kneeling position, Seokjin asks, “Alright, who is up next?”
~~~~~~~
The sun has set and the teams have been divided for a game of capture the flag. Hoseok ended up on Seokjin’s team, and although you wish you were on your friend’s team, you’re relieved you didn’t end up on Hoseok’s.
“Okay, Y/N, you’re a runner, I want you and Ryujin to be in charge of trying to get their flag. The rest of us will try to distract their team and protect our flag.” Namjoon orders in the huddle. The huddle breaks and everyone waits for the final ray of sunlight to fall behind the horizon.
“I’m nervous.” Ryujin whispers to you while you stretch your calves.
“Ah yeah, you probably should be.” You joke. “Listen, all you need to worry about is getting tagged. Just don’t let anyone touch you and do your best to stay hidden. If you get your hands on the flag, just sprint back to our base.”
“You make it sound easy.” She laughs.
Seokjin’s whistle sounds and you take off. Ryujin, poor girl, runs straight for the field between the two bases. A rookie mistake. You, however, have played this game before. You run to the trees on the side of the field to take cover and watch the game unfold.
It’s hard to see, but you can just make out Ryujin’s form running around the field dodging other bodies. It looks like so far your team is doing a good job of keeping the flag safe. Namjoon tackles a member of the other team and you decide to make a run for the other team’s base while everyone is distracted.
You can hear your heart beating in your ear as the blood rushes to your legs. You’ve almost run the whole distance of the field behind the trees when you hear something. Suddenly a pair of neon green shoes catches your eyes. Hoseok.
Holding your breath, you take cover, crouching behind a tree and hope to god that he doesn’t come over here. If he knew it was you, maybe he would spare you both the confrontation. You count to 60, slowly, and when he doesn’t come, you decide to stand up, intending to run for their base in a hail mary attempt to win.
But you’re cut short. Just a few feet away, Hoseok is standing, waiting. He doesn’t move at first, but after a few breaths, he takes a step, and another. You can finally make out his eyes in the darkness. It’s the first eye contact you’ve made so far.
There are no words shared between you. At this moment your mind is blank. Having your old summer fling within arms reach is overwhelming. You feel the pull to reach out to him. He’s eyes are looking directly into yours and for a moment it looks like he’s going to speak. But he stops himself, his brows furrow for a moment, and then, he runs.
~~~~~~~
After a long week of training, morning runs, avoiding Hoseok, and trying to figure out what happened between you and him during the capture the flag game, you are really looking forward to lake day. A day off from training before final camp preparations take place. The campers will be arriving in just two days.
You are one of the first ones to show up at the beach after lunch. You wasted no time changing into your bathing suit and slapping on some sunscreen. Jungkook and Jimin, the aquatic leaders, had already arrived as well.
Other counselors trickle in and you get to watch their interactions. It’s only been a few days, but everyone is already back into the Camp Blue Side swing of things.
The JCs all tend to head straight for the lake, while the older counselor’s chill on the beach. You’ve opted to sunbathe for a while before cooling off in the lake. You expect Seokjin will take a spot next to you when he arrives.
The LCT has found a spot on the sand with Yoongi and Taehyung, no surprises there. She’s delicately rubbing sunscreen on Taehyung’s back. When she finishes, Taehyung’s Arts & Crafts co leader calls him over and he puts sunscreen on her back. You’re pretty sure you can see steaming coming out of the LCT’s ears.
Someone lets out a joyful shout as they run from the edge of the beach all the way down the dock and jump into the lake. Hoseok.
“He really is still a camper at heart, isn’t he?” Seokjin asks as he sets his towel out next to yours.
“If you mean to say he’s a child, then I can agree with that.” You roll your eyes. He is horsing around in the water with the JCs, no wonder they all look up to him. Yeonjun, his co-leader, is trying to pull his head underwater, but Hoseok isn’t budging.
He hasn’t changed much and it takes you back to last summer. The campers would climb all over him during lake days, and he would let them. Once the two of you had become... a thing, you would always notice that he didn’t rub in the sunscreen on his nose. It became your responsibility to make sure the lotion was rubbed in all the way.
“Y/N, Jin! We need one more for volleyball!” Jimin’s invitation brings you back to reality. Seokjin consults you before claiming the spot. You follow him over to the net to watch the game. Hoseok is playing.
At first, you try not to watch him, but when the game gets going, Hoseok steps up his game. He serves, he sets, he dives, it’s hard not to watch him. You notice, toward the end of the game, that Hoseok has his signature white streak across his nose. He catches you looking, but instead of looking away, you point to your nose.
Hoseok, still looking at you, misses a ball that lands right next to him, losing the game for his team.
“Hoseok! What the hell man?” Jimin shouts, frustrated by Hoseok’s lack of attention.
“Sorry, sorry. I got... distracted.” Hoseok replies, picking up the volleyball. “Round two anyone?”
~~~~~~~
“All right campers, let’s give a big round of applause to Heather for cooking our dinner tonight!” Seokjin announces over the microphone. The children, hyped up on carbs from dinner, cheer loudly for the Camp chef. They all arrived just a few hours ago, descending on camp like a swarm of buzzing bees.
You’re a bit of a nervous wreck. For some god forsaken reason, you decided that you could volunteer to give a presentation at the camper orientation, and now you’re about to have to do that. Your notecards are organized and you rehearsed your talking points with Margo twice, but it doesn’t feel like enough when there are close to one hundred people in the audience.
“Okay, now that we’ve gone over the basic camp rules, let’s give it up for Y/N, the Team Two leader who will be discussing the team games!” Seokjin says cheerfully, stepping off the stage and handing the microphone over to you. This is it.
“Hey everyone! Who’s excited for the team games this year?” You ask, a big smile across your face. Of course everyone, counselor’s included, cheer loudly.
“Yeah, that's great to hear. I am also very excited. As you can tell I took a lot of notes to make sure I give you all the important info.” You joke, but there’s only a few scattered laughs. You have to tuck the microphone into your arm awkwardly so you can flip your note card over to find the right page.
“Oh well they’re out of order, so I guess...” You look out into the crowd of expectant faces. Some of the campers are already not paying attention, you’ve lost them. As always, Hoseok catches your eye. He can see you’re floundering already, and he smirks. He fucking smirks. “I’ll have to wing it.” You finish your thought and toss the notecards to the side.
You manage to get through it, even working a few jokes in here and there. And it seems like the kids are really pumped for the team activities and the competition.
“Okay, I think next up is Jungkook with some information about water activities and lake day!” The kids cheer, the girls squeal, all too excited for Jungkook to be on stage.
“Hey, that was pretty good Y/N!” Seokjin whispers as you step back down from the stage.
“You missed a few talking points though-” Namjoon’s critique is cut short.
“You were GREAT!” Seokjin reaffirms.
~~~~~~~
Hushed whispers can be heard in the cabin, but it’s the first night and you’re not going to try to enforce lights out. You would probably be struggling to fall asleep either way.
Your interactions with Hoseok thus far have been quite puzzling. He has been confusing, rude, and annoying, but what does it mean? You keep thinking about the look in his eye that night during capture the flag. You could feel a spark between you, but he almost looked pained. But he’s the one who caused your pain.
Maybe he’s just trying to get under your skin to make sure his team wins. Well tomorrow is day one of camp, and you’ll be damned if you let him win.

~~~~~~~
It’s 7am and the air is already a warm 70 degrees: perfect weather for running the trail down to Lake Blue Side. The dirt under your sneakers is a familiar and welcome feeling. Back home, you’re always running on pavement, so the cushion of the ground is a nice change.
The trees that surround camp are lush and brimming with birds and insects. Just above this hill, the greenery will give way to the beach. It puts an extra spring in your step, and you push through the incline, sprinting until your shoes hit the sand.
The blue ripples lap at the shore line while the sun, hovering just above the horizon, warms the cool dark water. You walk toward the edge of the water, attempting to catch your breath from your uphill sprint. The past two years at Camp Blue Side, this lake has been your happy place. Most mornings, you sneak out of bed before sunrise and run the trail to this very spot.
The calming effect of the lake helps you make it through the hectic days at camp. Wrangling campers from sunrise to sunset (and then some) is tiring and doesn’t leave much room for your own thoughts to get sorted out. Your near-daily trips to the lake became even more important last summer.
~~~~~~~
As a JC, in your first year, you spent most of your time playing lackey to the Sports Leader. You had registered late (at the urging of your dear friend Seokjin), and the only position left for you was equipment manager. Between checking in on your campers and lugging sports and outdoor equipment around, you barely had a moment to breathe. It ended up being a good summer, but you knew you wanted a chance to try something different.
Year two, you got assigned to co-lead Team One and it was, somehow, an even more hectic summer than you had expected. Being responsible for the fun and safety of so many campers every day was fulfilling, but you’ve always valued alone time. Your trips to the lake increased ten-fold last year.
And that’s when you started noticing Hoseok.
Of course, you had seen him around camp and even made small talk with him in passing. You were friendly with all your fellow counselors, but aside from your Team One co-leader, your cabin mate, and Seokjin, you hadn’t had time to get to know anyone that well.
Every time you went for your run, you would spot Hoseok doing the same. At least most of the time. Other times, he would be doing push ups or lunges on the field. And when Hoseok exercises, he glows. When you run in the heat and humidity, you sweat. But Hoseok glistens.
So naturally, you began noticing him more, and he noticed you noticing. One thing led to another, and the casual group conversations transformed into less-casual solo conversations. Hoseok became Hobi, and he would always give you his chocolate pudding. He didn’t like it, and he knew that it was your favorite dessert. Around week five, he asked if you wanted to go on your morning run with him, and it ended with a kiss right here at the lake.
At the end of the summer, you gave him your number and he promised to call. He lived a ways away from camp, but only about an hour away from your university. There was definitely something there, and you were excited to see where it went.
But Hoseok broke his promise. He never called.
~~~~~~~
“He’s on the docket, just like the past several years. He’s not going to just not show up, Y/N.” Seokjin pointed at the Camp Blue Side staff list on his clipboard.
“I know that, Jin.” You roll your eyes at him. “But I’m just saying...”
“If you didn’t want to see Hoseok, why did you sign up for another year? You could’ve just stayed home.”
“I can’t let him win!” You shout, your voice carrying through the open windows in Seokjin’s office, disturbing the pre-camp peace.
Seokjin looks at you in silence. Relaxing your shoulders, you apologize silently.
“Look, you cannot let your petty energy affect your performance as a counselor. That’s not the way we do things around here, I know you know that.” You nod along with your friend’s gentle scolding. “And if your competitive nature is going to be an issue this summer, I need you to let me know so I can reassign you.”
“Reassign me?” You reach for the clipboard in Seokjin’s hand and read it over.
Jung, Hoseok - Team One Leader
Y/L/N, Y/N - Team Two Leader
“Oh, hell yes.” You pass the clipboard back to Seokjin and make your hasty exit, running from the office. You can hear him calling after you, probably afraid of what’s going through your head. But your head has actually cleared for the first time in months. There is only one thought now.
Let the games begin.
~~~~~~~
The ICU waiting room is suffocating. The room is small and plain and full of people waiting to visit their loved ones. There is a family with about six kids to your left. The youngest children are roaming around, giggling happily. They don’t understand the implications of being in this place.
You shuffle around in the stiff chair, waiting for Yoongi’s doctor to come and speak with you about his condition. The Generic Hotel Art catches your eye. A field of flowers spreading out to the horizon. It’s a little too on the nose. Last night, you saw the illness taking over your boyfriend but you had no idea just how bad it was.
“Ma’am, you’re here to see Min Yoongi, correct?” A man in navy scrubs approaches you, a clipboard in his hands. “I’m Dr. Kim, please follow me this way.”
The doctor leads you through a set of double doors and down a hallway. You can smell the crisp clean scent of the hospital. You can see into each room and with each passing patient a lump grows in your throat
“Let’s stop here for a moment and talk about Yoongi’s course of treatment.” Dr. Kim stops suddenly, a few feet away from what you assume is Yoongi’s room. You can make out a lump in the bed, but the sheer curtains blur his face. “As I’m sure you know, his diagnosis is acute hanahaki disease.” You nod along, images of flower petals invading your mind.
“Unfortunately, the disease is so severe that the typical treatments we use to stop the spread will not be enough.” The doctor pauses as though he wants you to chime in.
“So will you be performing the surgery?” You question, chewing on the dry skin around your thumb nail.
“The surgery is either a very early intervention, or an absolute last resort.” He stops and you realize there is something not clicking in your brain.
“I don’t think I understand.”
“It would take several hours to remove the growths from his lungs and since he is already so weak, his odds of survival are about 25% at best.” The doctor gives you a moment to process the information, to realize how dire this situation truly is. He brings his hand up to squeeze your arm and it hits you like a ton of bricks.
Your legs start to give, but you cling to the wall. The doctor grabs your arms to help steady you. Tears are streaming down your face, each carrying the pain you feel just imagining life without Yoongi.
“Wha- what can you do?” You stutter, waves of sorrow shake your body.
“We need to track down the person he’s in love with and see if there are any feelings there. At this point the safest way to heal Yoongi is the natural way. He needs to feel that his love is, in fact, requited.”
~~~~~~~
You’ve never seen Yoongi so pale. And that’s really saying something, seeing as he never goes outside. His hand, that you’ve delicately placed in your own, is clammy. You can tell he’s really uncomfortable, but he still manages to sleep.
For the past hour or so, you’ve been doing two things: waiting for Yoongi to wake up and trying to figure out who stole his heart.
It has to be someone at his job, he’s always either at work or home. You knew a few of his work friends, but there is one name that sticks out. Someone he’s been working more closely with lately.
“Baby?” Yoongi’s hoarse voice cracks, his throat damaged by the foliage growing up from his lungs. He weakly squeezes your hand, and it sends a fresh wave of tears spilling over your lashes.
“Is it Jungkook?” You question him bluntly. He closes his eyes and tries to swallow. “I need to know, it’s your only chance at getting through this.”
Yoongi is unresponsive to your sudden interrogation, so you ask again. “Is it Jungkook?”
He nods.
~~~~~~~
“I’m sorry ma’am he is unavailable for the rest of the afternoon.” The receptionist responds to your inquiry to speak to Jeon Jungkook without even looking up from her computer screen.
The lobby of BH Music Group is familiar to you, though the receptionist must be somewhat new if she doesn’t recognize you. The sleek black leather furniture and a wall to wall mural from a local street artist haven’t changed, though. The speakers are playing a chill lo-fi beat track, no doubt created in house.
When Yoongi first got his job here, you visited him quite frequently. He had a little set up in an office with the other newbies, but it wasn’t long before he had his very own studio space. Genius Lab he called it. A bit cocky for an assistant producer, but it fit his brand perfectly. He started getting busier, so your visits became few and far between.
“Is there something else I can help you with?” The reception asks, cocking an eyebrow in your direction.
“Yes, sorry. I really need to speak with Jungkook.” You stress your words, trying to make her realize the urgency. “I’m Min Yoongi’s girlfriend.” Her eyes grow wide, and she nods before picking up her phone.
“Sir, Min Yoongi’s girlfriend is at the front desk asking to see you.” She pauses and you can just barely make out the sound of someone talking on the other line. She turns her attention to you.
“Ma’am, he’ll see you now.” She gives you a sympathetic look and hangs up her phone.
Two doors down from Genius Lab is Jungkook’s studio, Golden Closet. Standing outside of Jungkook’s studio feels a bit surreal. This isn’t your life, it can’t be. Your boyfriend loves you and only you.
This is the reality you must face though. You reach forward and knock firmly against the door. It takes a long moment of eerie quiet for the door to open. A tall man with big bright eyes looks down at you from behind the door. His skin is flawless and his dark hair hangs, slightly mussed, next to his sharp jaw.
He’s beautiful.
And that makes you hate him even more.
“Hi, Y/N, please come in.” Jungkook bows his head and stands back from the door. You enter, slowly walking past him. His studio looks very similar to Yoongi’s. Speakers, mixing equipment, a computer. He’s got a keyboard with red backlighting and a handful of little tchotchkes lined up in a row under his monitors.
“Would you like to sit?” He motions toward the leather sofa on the back wall of the studio. Crossing your arms, you shake your head and lean against the wall instead.
“Yoongi is in the hospital.” You blurt out, eyes avoiding Jungkook’s. The emotions are already building up again, creating pressure in your chest. “The ICU, actually.”
“Oh god. I’m so sorry.” Jungkook sits down in his desk chair. “What can I do?” He asks after a moment’s pause.
Something about the sincerity in his voice breaks you. You crumble onto the floor and let out a sob. Jungkook, seemingly unsure of what to do, moves down to the floor next to you and opens up his arms.
What he offers is a hug, some comfort. What he gets it’s a dozen slaps to the chest and more crying.
“Did you know?!” You cry out between sobs. “Why did you do this?!”
“No! What?” He asks, not fighting you, but pulling you closer. “I don’t know what you mean.” The sobs take over and you give up fighting him. His arms are strong, but not smothering.
Jungkook, practically a stranger, holds you while you cry. It must have been two or three full minutes before you’re calm enough to speak again.
“Yoongi has hanahaki disease.” You can feel Jungkook’s chest jolt, his breath catching. “Did you know he’s in love with you?”
