Shout out to all the Black ppl that can no longer participate directly in the fandom they love because of the stresses of racism 👍🏾 you contain multitudes of value and I'm sorry that the color of your skin and the power of your voice makes people not want to acknowledge that.

Was watching a hot takes video and one of the hot takes was that Zelda games have never had a good story. To be honest, in my opinion, saying something of the sort feels like a disservice to the series because LoZ is a video game series, and its storytelling is not only about what the plot offers. Sure, plot-wise, the story is simplistic enough, but there are other factors to consider, like side quests and side characters, narrative design, sound design, and clues left in its environmental storytelling that enhances and enriches what would be a simplistic plot. If everything was told to you via the plot, you as the player would also be left with no incentive to explore the world at large. My frustration with Tears of the Kingdom is for this very reason; the plot and the environmental storytelling seem so disjointed, not only from its own world, but from the game that it calls itself a sequel of. I want to be led to clues that allow me to speculate about all these characters and plotlines and mechanics they've introduced but the clues have no meaning or weight to them such that you can interpret them in any way you wish, leaving it far too open-ended to come to any reasonable conclusion.

After spending close to a year writing and thinking about TotK Ganondorf, I have decided to conclude that I think that his motivation for what he does is sufficient. I think it is fairly reasonable to bear hatred for, and rebel against, a kingdom that was just founded in his lifetime, that comes along and demands his fealty over and over again in such a manner where Ganondorf is left with no other reasonable choice but to agree. Additionally, in his oath of fealty, he is not treated like a ruler of equal strength and position; rather he is immediately delegated as a vassal under Rauru's protection, kept close because he is deemed evil by Rauru's court as if he is a political prisoner. TotK Ganondorf dislikes Zonai technology because its strength cannot be matched; either you come under Rauru's protection and live under the umbrella of its power, or you oppose him and face almost instant annihilation.
The problem is that, while this motivation is clear to me, the narrative TotK offers does a great disservice in not giving Ganondorf any sort of grace in showing that he has reasonable motives in not wishing to be controlled by Rauru. Instead, his refusal to submit peacefully is labelled as his evil and rebellious trait, while the narrative doubles down on ensuring that you, as the player, perceive Rauru as a good king that serves as a role model for Zelda I am still of the opinion that the reason they added that line about Ganondorf attacking Gerudo villages specifically was to show that he was evil and selfish, because the narrative itself was not convincing enough in explaining that Ganondorf was someone so evil that he could sustain a grudge for tens of thousands of years. If they had taken the time to explain what Rauru's hubris actually was, that he refused to listen to Zelda's concerns and did not treat Ganondorf as a soveriegn foreign ruler that had a right to not want to bow to Hyrule then the plot would have been so much better in my opinion.

(totk rewritten/botw 2 concepts, sky area)
a lone survivor of the ancient shiekah (actually alive not mummified- a descendant of those that remained in the sky but cut off from the rest of the world after the ancient king banning their tech- now only he is left of all of them), now caring for the birds of the sky
he lives in an old shiekah lab and uses a nonfunctioning gauntlet (?) and other old tech stuff in a repurposed way, espeically after ganondorf starts to wake up (since in my rewrite hes the srouce of the power- meaning islands are falling and theres a large energy black out) and everything started to lose energy
once you find him you can tame certain birds and register them with him, after doing so if you are in free fall in the sky area (to complete the trio of horses on the ground, dondons in the underground, birds in the sky- but not to ride birds as to not take away all challenge and take away too much of skywards sword) you can call the bird thats flying with you to give you a small boost in height (since building is removed and alot of the traversal in the sky is parasail or grappling hook and the removal of the totk towers, to make falling more punihisng but not too punishing, the height boost while in the sky to correct when you are about to miss an island or increase the distance you can go)
the big hat not just to enable the birds resting on it and it being a signature of the ancient shiekah PLUS protection from the sun as the new addition of the hazard of being sunburned (potentially, its similar to the already existing heat system but for the sky it makes sense no? .. also big hat)

things that have stuck with me as a woc in (the zelda) fandom
Hey all. This post is mostly about the Gerudo and my own experiences in fandom as a Middle Eastern woman (will be using acronyms such as MENA and woc), because the longer I stay here the more insane I become. This post is mostly about a lot of horrible stereotyping, misogynistic, racist, etc. headcanons, and just downright horribly offensive comments I've witnessed that have stuck with me throughout my time here.
There are a lot of other problems in this fandom with a lot of other aspects of the games (the Zonai...) which I won't touch on, as the Gerudo resonate closest with me and I feel I have the authority to speak on these issues as I am MENA, and they are based on MENA stereotypes.
TW for racism, misogyny, xenophobia, abortion... it's just strange.
The most notable thing I've experienced during my time in this fandom is being spoken over, as a woc talking about woc issues, by white people. White people who were MY FRIENDS.
One instance that sticks out to me is when someone shared their art of Urbosa in a Zelda server. It was really sexualized, and her waist was EXTREMELY tiny. Below the art, the artist said, "her waist is snatched because she got an abortion." She didn't say this about the other characters she drew. Only the woc.
Do I need to elaborate on why that is a horrible, disgusting thing to say?
This really upset me. What upset me more, however, was that nobody spoke up. Nobody said hey, this is wrong, and what you said is gross. When I spoke about this with my friends, they continued to bash the art style or whatever and ignore the fact that what was said was disgustingly racist. Then, after repeating about 5 separate times the impact this had on me as a woc (because nobody was listening to me and the most action that was taken was hug emojis), I got asked: Are you MENA?
They chose to ignore the racism they were witnessing and then questioned my (already stated) credibility. To question my capacity to be upset, hurt, and angry. These were people I called friends.
This next instance was not me being spoken over, but it was... weird. In a Zelda server, someone shared their headcanons for their personal AU. One of these headcanons was:
The Gerudo stop aging until they meet their significant other.
The Gerudo stop aging until they meet their significant other.
This was to justify the person's pedophilic ship with Riju, which... yeah. Self explanatory. So not only that, but you are tying the life and worth of WOC to their partners which, in-game, are men. The Gerudo do not continue their lives until they met their partners. The woc do not continue their lives until they meet their partners.
Be real.
This person ended up getting called out (after MUCH convincing from me to do so...).
These are two specific instances that have stuck with me during my time in fandom, but now I'll touch on more general stuff.
The only way people speak about Urbosa or other Gerudo characters is sexually or violently. It seems we only have the capacity to say "yes mommy Urbosa step on me! Crush my bones!! Yes!!" which is actually extremely harmful. You can like the Gerudo. You can think they're sexy or hot. But you need to be more mindful about how you speak about them, because if the only way you can express your feelings about these woc is through acts of violence, that is a problem. Because you cannot see the Gerudo as characters beyond being man-hating lesbians to satisfy your own fetishes. By acting this way, you also contribute to the idea that Gerudo women cannot be feminine because they are brown-skinned. No other race in Zelda is spoken about this way.
The Gerudo are often attached to other characters, as mentioned previously. I think this is most commonly and easily seen with Urbosa. Whenever she is discussed, it is in relation to Zelda (mother-daughter relationship) or Zelda's mother (having an affair or whatever other headcanons there may be). It is rare that Urbosa is written on her own, outside of her relationships. Not like she has an entire society to run or anything.
Let's also not forget about the sexualization of Link in his Gerudo vai outfit. Yes, it's cute. Yes, it looks good on him. But so many of you borderline fetishize him wearing it. However, I don't think I know enough to speak on this specific issue, so I will stop there with that.
I will never forget the time I came across a post saying that the existence of Ashai, a pale Gerudo, is racist.
Tumblr media
Here is Ashai. She teaches the dating lessons in Gerudo Town. As you can see, she is paler than a lot of the Gerudo.
However, contrary to the westernized belief that all Middle Eastern people are literally brown-skinned Muslims, the Middle East is extremely diverse. Middle Eastern people are pale, dark, brown, tall, short, Muslim, Christian, Jewish. We are not carbon copies of each other like this poster wanted the Gerudo to be. In fact, this same exact identical-ness is what made early versions of the Gerudo so racist. The one thing Nintendo did right was having a diverse range of skin tones for the Gerudo in BOTW, and by saying Ashai's existence as a pale Gerudo is racist, you erase all of that progress.
Race is not just in your skin tone. It's in your eyes, your nose, your mouth, your ears, your body. That is why, despite being pale, Ashai is Gerudo. Ashai is a WOC.
This post is not intended to stir up drama, because if you believe racism = drama, that is not on the poc calling it out.
If you are a white person who is friends with POC, this doesn't make you exempt from contributing to the harmful stereotypes or racism.
Sit down. Listen. And reflect.

I was just reminiscing on how hard this fandom was shilling for a complex Ganondorf for the wilds era, and this wasn't even confined to niche parts of the fandom. Every time there was a hint that Ganondorf might be involved in some way, the fandom went wild with speculation. It's like people these days, when defending TotK's poor handling of Ganondorf's writing, forget that a complex Ganondorf, or at least a Ganondorf that had a bit more character depth than a puddle on sidewalk, was something *everyone* wanted. Most people were not content with an "evil for the sake of being evil" Ganondorf.
When the first trailer and images of BotW dropped, a lot of people saw the cloth around Link's forearms and noticed the patterning there. Many thought it was similar to Gerudo patterning. Lo and behold people began speculating that Link may have a close relationship with the Gerudo, and perhaps with Ganondorf him. Cue all the theories and fanart and fanfic of Link and Ganondorf growing up together, being close friends, knowing each other, before Ganondorf's turn to darkness. Okay so as BotW's release approaches we learn about Calamity Ganon and then we see this mysterious old man. He seems pretty large in stature and is dark skinned. Cue the second wave of rumor mills that this may be Ganondorf. Perhaps a weary old washed up soul, or perhaps a manipulation tactic while his real form, the calamity, keeps Zelda trapped inside the castle. The tapestry with the red haired hero. This one causes a big wave of rumors that perhaps the past hero was a Gerudo, maybe an iteration of Ganondorf.
The first trailer for TotK drops, we see the murals, Ganondorf's corpse, what looks like a horrifying vision of how he ended up here. Rehydrated Ganondorf starts trending. People are wild with speculations of who he was. Many link him to the hero on the tapestry. Most speculation about Ganondorf now is what sort of horrendous thing happened to him that he would end up here, and less about how evil he must have been to end up here. The official "rehydrated Ganondorf" art drops. Everyone sees his design, how he seems more heroic in this art piece. Again, people are still speculating on how complex this Ganondorf might be, between what we have seen thus far. Many note he is not smirking in this art as he usually is, perhaps a hint that his character this time might be different. And we have reached TotK Ganondorf, with the most generic evil villain writing we have seen of him yet. Ganondorf is a big appeal of the LoZ games. He deserves more than just being hot.

I'm so tired bro. Everytime I enjoy something, I find out it's made by the evillest people on planet Earth.
Reminder to not support or promote the Sonic 3 movie, the Knuckles spinoff, or any work under Paramount's umbrella. Paramount is still an open supporter of Zionism and genocide.
Tumblr media
In addition to Paramount's endorsement of Israel and in turn the genocide of Palestinians, Jim Carrey is also ableist from his Anti-Vax history.
He also sexually assaulted multiple people including kissing Alicia Silverstone and attempting to kiss Will Smith without consent.
They don't need your money. Donate that money toward supporting any of the organizations fighting against the several ongoing genocides right now instead.
While yes I understand this is not an explicit goal mentioned of the BDS movement, it is still not a mandatory good to purchase. I know that organizers like this also intentionally pick who they boycott very selectively because of the nature and limitations of boycotts.
All of that said, it takes no effort to not give them money or support them.
Lower paid artists and production staff already get paid for their work and it's important not to use them as a buffer to rationalize purchasing out of a duty to "support" them. This is an industry that throws them away without a second thought regardless of the circumstances.
If you want to support artists, post about unionizing updates, advocate for covid protections for production staff, and support their artists and push back against the advent of exploitation from AI instead.
So make sure you check the BDS protest list and follow it, but also we can easily support not backing and funding the entertainment industry's complicity in genocide. You can't boycott everything, but this is more than doable.
