The light only we hold
The shallowness of our youth is truly something to be frightened of. You worry about your acne, you worry about your complexion. Some of us waste months on crushes that fade away while others cry about their weight. You spend each day thinking about whats in front of you, never look beyond. Just for a moment, close your eyes and listen. Pay attention to every detail in your house. The frowns and the smiles. For a while change your perspective. There are three simple principles.
Firstly see. Notice the dark caverns beneath your parents’s eyes and realize how hypocritical their smiles are. For the first time, try to follow up on your actions and observe their consequences. That friend you were mean to might come off as hardy but really took your rudeness to heart. That test you never studied for, how it disappointed your parents. That kid you bullied, how miserable his life is. Widen your perspective and open your eyes. Notice these things. Acknowledge them. Don’t stand oblivious to the sinister forces that plague this society. Notice how one word from you can make that one person happy and light up his day. Pay attention to the feelings people around you bottle up.
Secondly, feel. Take out a little time and think about this. Put yourself in their shoes. Empathize and imagine how much you can hurt these people, and how happy you can make them. Accept when you’re in the wrong and realize your responsibilities. As a student to perform. As a son/daughter to make your parents proud, or at least try. As a friend who thinks about his friends’ feelings and looks out for them. As a person who contributes to make this society a better place. There are bigger, more important problems than our social life . There are so many responsibilities don’t recognize, and its because of this society has become this neglecting horror. We commit these mistakes without ever realizing that they are as such. We create drama as entertainment, and betray people selfishly. We justify these things under the notion of youth, a futile one. A fake one.
Lastly, act. Start with yourself. If someone hurts you, put aside that ego and tell them. Be blunt and advocate for the truth. Be open and speak, make people aware. Use this power to knock sense into others. Make them realize, be the change this society needs. As the youth, we have to make the future. We’re the next generation. If this future is plagued too then this cycle will continue. Speak against the wrong. Think and feel, I can’t stress enough on this. The torch has been passed down for ages. Its in our hands now. It flickers with its dying embers and we have to protect it. So see. Protect. Feel. Act. Do whatever you can to fix this dying light. The light only we hold.

Nawaz out for 10
Quite recently we saw a wave of rejoicing as Nawaz Sharif was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment on account of corruption and leeching upon Pakistan's wealth;with Mariam Nawaz receiving 7 years of jail-further fines were also issued. It proved a landmark in Pakistan’s history, yet it is facing opposition - an absurd reaction that has me puzzled.
I have come across statements like this was just to clear the path for Imran’s victory or that this was targeted and unfair as Musharaf and Zardari still roam free despite their offences. How could one be so blind sided that they are unable to see this is the first time in 70 years of corruption that justice finally took the lead. Its not about who was prosecuted. Its the fact that our country was able to recognize and take action effectively against a criminal. Our country was able to secure its political platform just by a little amount. Our country was able to overcome the corrupt forces like bribery that stand in its way.
Nawaz deserved to go, we cannot deny that. As for whether the timing and action was fair, further criminals will be prosecuted too. Musharaf and Zardari are next. You cannot bring them in all at once. Appreciate the effort of the judiciary to take that first step instead of whining about the imprisonment because of your political affiliation. Your country comes first. This wasn’t a victory for PTI. This wasn’t a defeat for PMLN. It was a victory for Pakistan and a loss for the rotten forces that eat away our country’s honor.

Pakistan's dry situation
Drenched in sweat, you reach home;totally exhausted and longing for a shower. You turn to a good bath-cooling off is your top priority at the moment. In that one shower you ignorantly sabotage the future of this country. But its not just limited to domestic use.
There has always been a lack of political foresight. Industries toss away large quantities of excess water with gross neglect to the country's water problem. More than 200 million pakistanis consume the country's limited water resources, mainly originating from glacier meltwater and monsoon rainfall. It is estimated that by 2025 this already monstrous population will double-the country will inevitably run dry. There is to be an approximate water supply of 500 cubicmetres per head; this is far from sufficient.
What ever water we have we do not utilize properly. Water pollution is quite prevalant-both in urban and rural areas. With a widespread use of tubewells that draw up groundwater and accessing the water table through other means, it is noticeably being lowered;now at a poisonous level where people expose themselves to arsenic. Not only that, Pakistan's limited water resources are terribly contaminated. An utter lack of treatment plants and other methods of treating waste water has resulted in increasing cases of typhoid, diarrhoea and other water borne diseases. The rural population turns to streams and rivers that are loaded with filth-mostly human and industrial waste. With no alternatives, the responsibility falls on the shoulders of the upcoming government.
We have individual responsibilities as well. If you want to take a shower, use a bucket-it saves the water you waste by using showers with gross neglect. Refrain from leaving taps open at home;my point being do not use this priceless resource simply to your leisure. Set demands for the next government. We need clean water. We need projects that can help avoid this water crisis. The government should introduce an increasing amount of reservoirs-big or small. Desalination and waste water treatment projects should be introduced. A policy of water conservation should be adopted and implemented inorder to secure Pakistan's future. People should be aware by now. We too will soon be feeling the effects of this shortage, because it IS working its way upto the middle class. Raise your voices and set out these demands. Any government that comes into power should immediately respond to Pakistan's scarcity of water, we cannot accept anything else. We don't have a choice now.

Our Perpetual Marathon
CAIEs are almost over. Each and everyone must surely be looking towards a fun-filled summer. Yet there’s this pressure that will have you uneasy. The glance of every book, every certificate will tear a hole through you. Its the haunting thought of the result day.
I know everyone must be scared. This was our first step into this merit- based world. A world where the one who comes out on top is deemed the best, and those who don’t make it are considered a disappointment. Ask yourself, is this really what you want? Will this race, this everlasting marathon ever finish? Who knows for how long we can keep up. Those at the top struggle to maintain that position and those at the bottom struggle to avoid being left behind. Eventually we will all run out of breath. Nothing we did would be good enough. Trust me, that’s the kind of world we live in. This caste system we’ve created is sickening. Where one’s self worth is measured by others and that too based on criteria of merit, education and achievement. That’s not all there is to this.
Its all for us you see. Each and every obstacle. We’’ get hurt. We’ll cry. We’ll push others down to reach for the top. But they’ll claw their way up too. I’m not writing this to tell you its a happy ending. Its too late for that. I have a responsibility to be realistic. You’ve given your exams. You’ve made mistakes. Big and small. Dumb and understandable. But we worked hard. We studied till late at night, we missed out on recreation, we made sacrifices, we put in effort. We organised ourselves and rose to combat this challenge head-on. We all took it seriously. We all tried our best. That’s what matters. Not the performance but the preparation. What ever you could do in that little is your best, all mistakes taken into account. Be proud of that. That is enough reason to not have regrets. We each have our own capability but the criterion for judgement of oneself should truly be the effort one puts in.
As each of you stare at that simple piece of paper, remind yourself that you tried your best. Remind yourselves that you sculpture your destiny, not that result. This is only the first step. We’ll have further hardships. But we’ll be prepared. Now we know what its like.
No one is at the top and no one is at the bottom. Each and every person has his or her individuality that is to be respected. That shines with its own light. I’m writing this right now so that everyone can make the most of these vacations. So that they don’t lose these days, because every single one counts.
Reality check: We all have responsibilities. We’re the future. We have to carry this world to the next generation. So do not lose heart. You cannot. Each and everyone one of you is important for this task. We have our parents to look after, our families so do your best, no less. That’s enough. They’ll understand. Just don’t lose hope. Don’t lose sight of your path. We all have our roles and there is no comparing them. Trudge on, through all the hardships and disappointments. Rally yourselves and move forward.

Examining going way too far
We’ve been living in a world of pitiful oblivion, really-not turning an eye to whatever eats us away. Harassment corrodes our motherland and we watch it rot away.
Quite recently it was brought to public attention that in Bahria college Islamabad, 80 students were sexually harassed by an FBISE examiner while their exam was being conducted;they were threatened with mark deduction on top of that. Ladies and gentlemen, this violation is not something we can ignore. Those students, groped and abused, were deprived of their dignity. That man was supposedly a trusted member of a trusted organisation. He betrayed not only his profession but also the trust of the country. To use one’s position, one’s authority so gruesomely is truly to be condemned. He had a responsibility to overlook the children yet he took advantage of that. He exploited the trust bestowed upon him by the nation and its people. Never for a moment did he consider the traitorous nature of this evil act.
Even if we have lost sight we still have empathy. We still have a voice. Each and everyone of us. We owe this country and the people a great debt in exchange for the social security we have, the freedom we have. Those who can speak, become the voice of those who can’t. Those who can fight, resist for those who can’t. Those who have the power to oppose, rise up against evil for those who can’t. Rise and fight back. It doesn’t matter how. Bring that vile man and other such people to justice. Someone has to.
