A guide on my process for colouring like in the Arcana which I developed through studying the style.

Now, this is just for sprites or for neutral lighting. In the case of most memories/CGs, you have more interesting colours to use, but the process is identical. There are just extra steps.

Using my favourite memories for each character as examples (hopefully, you can tell which ones) you can see this process. All of this happens on layers above the base drawing.

Usually, you set a colour-filled layer to the setting “multiply” over the entire drawing, then using a “screen”, “add”, or “hard light” layer, you add the lighting. Depending on the intensity of the lighting, the outline will be coloured to be lighter.

The shading colour rarely changes, aside from slight hue changes.

Misc advice/tips/tricks below. I may update it depending on if I get further questions.

Now, to be upfront, I’m not actually that confident in the details of how hair is shaded in the Arcana. While I get the gist, I’m less good with the precise shapes of it.

For reference, Muriel, Nadia, and some of Julian’s wigs are good places to find how they shade long, straight hair. I’d look at the sort of shapes they use at certain edges (which I need to practice). I’d also try to reference real hair and see how light reflects on it.

thank you!! I made a little guide :> it's mostly about hair color picks but this is how I choose my colors in general!

i tend to stick to a similar value with all my colors! the only colors that get a higher saturation tend to be the highlights

and a way to make your colors pop is contrasting your warm and cool tones :> with yaoyao, I have a warm-tone base with a cool-tone shadow and kazuha's is a little more messy, but the bright teal pops in contrast with the red and warm tones.

this chart is helpful too if you're stuck on what kind of color scheme you'd like to go with!

I tend not to use pure white/black in my base color or lineart either my whites will either be warm/cool grays depending on the character! and I tend to have cool blue/purple blacks color has so much personality so I love adding lots of it :>

I'm physically incapable of base coloring as a solid color to save my life... it takes a while and most of it is intuitive at this point so it's a bit difficult to explain for bigger pieces, but I hope this helps!!

Spanish Colonial Era AU

Heres a little Malex prompt and doodle I did a while ago about an AU where Trese takes place during the Spanish era in the Philippines:

“Hand-kissing is a common courtesy and a normal way of greeting a lady back then. Since Maliksi is of higher social status than most of the people he encounters (being a prince and the wealthy heir to the Armanaz company), it’s customary that he initiates this courtesy. Whenever he does, he’s always met with a fit of shy giggles from the ladies… until he met Binibining Alexandra. Alex, stern and guarded as usual, would always just ignore his extended hand and get straight to business. Despite this, Maliksi never fails to extend his hand to her whenever they meet in hopes that one day she might offer her hand back to him.”
