why should i believe someone who says someone is racist if they don't prove it?
I'm not going to tell you how to live your life anon, but I will say this:
If a person of colour says they've experienced racism, we should believe them. They don't owe it to anyone to 'prove' that they've experienced racism. Racism is an every day lived experiences of countless people of colour.
Racism isn't always slurs or obvious to people who haven't experienced it. Racism is microaggressions, it's people discrediting someone's experience or opinion, it's a million things that, as a white person, you might miss because you haven't lived in it every day for your entire life.
As a general rule, I believe people of colour if they say they've experienced racism. Often times people who are being racist don't actually understand that they're being racist or how something they said could be considered racist. It's on us as white people to listen when someone of colour tells us somethings we did (or one of our friends did) is racist. It's on us as white people to accept and understand that people of colour don't owe us forgiveness even if we apologize.
It's also on us as white people to learn and grow and continual challenge our own thoughts and beliefs because most of us were raised benefiting from racist systems - especially if you were raised in the United States.
Saying you're anti-racist or against racism isn't enough. Being anti-racist is a behavior, not a belief. You have to be willing to face your own prejudiced and grow and continue to grow. Unlearning racism is a lifelong journey.
So why should you believe someone when they say something is racist or someone is racist? Because most of the time when someone comes out with those kinds of accusations it hurts them. It's hard. They face countless people telling them to 'prove it'.
Just like we should believe women when they say they experienced sexism or traumatic sexual experiences. Just like we should believe queer people when they tell us they've experienced homophobia. Just like we should believe trans people when they tell us they've experienced transphobia. Just like we should believe Jewish people when they say they experienced antisemitism. Just like we should believe Muslim people when they tell us they've experienced Islamophobia.
It is extremely rare for reports of racism, sexual assault, homophobia, etc to be false. Only around 3% of sexual assault accusations are false (and according to the linked report, that is about the same as false reports of all violent crimes).
If someone is brave enough to say "hey, this person/comment/activity/etc is racist, I believe them and adjust my behaviour accordingly because, for me, I trust marginalized people when they speak out.
There will always be false accusations, but those are vastly outnumbered by actual harmful experiences.
And I can speak with some authority about my own experience being believed and being forced to justify my own experience because when I was 18 I was sexual assaulted and when I told a trusted friend they didn't believe me, managed to spread around our entire friend group that I was a liar, and they are still friends with the person who assaulted me 13 years later.
It was exhausting and it made me wish I never said anything. It took me nearly a decade to tell someone else and thankfully that person believed me.
Again, I'm not going to tell you how to live your life. I'm just telling you how I try to live mine and why.

The pipeline from "I hope it's nice where you are" to "I hope it's shitty in The Black Dog" actually makes me LOL... sometimes maturity is realizing that actually.. other people deserve to suffer.

I keep coming back to how much Taylor did not need to release this record and how much courage it shows that she did. These lyrics touch on it:
The scandal was contained
The bullet had just grazed
At all costs keep your good name
Because things ended with MH and people generally stopped talking about it and she kept just winning. The general public saw her as at the top of her game and America’s Sweetheart dating the football star. The Brads, Dads, and Chads had something to say but she actually seemed to have more defenders than ever before. Like this is the most recent image the general public has of her
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And she chose to put out this one.
Tumblr media
She wasn’t on trial anymore, the scandal was contained, so she didn’t need to put in a plea, but she does actually want people to know and understand her
I want to snarl and show you just how disturbed this has made me
She’s trusting us with her feelings when she absolutely didn’t have to and we should appreciate it for the gift it is
