(extremely late) midnights review + rate!!

so obviously it's been a very long time since midnights came out, and we've all had time to digest it, and i thought it would be a good idea to do a review, although it's a bit late!

to start with, the album itself really surprised me. i don't think i expected it to be that upbeat, after folkmore, but it was a pleasant surprise. that being said, i did miss the quiet pop songs that we got on folkmore, but the bops were very welcome!

secondly, the lyrics. of course, this is the taylor swift we are talking about, the lyrics were absolute poetry. i didn't look at lyrics during my first listen, so here is the ranking that i made during my first listen. (this doesn't include the consideration of lyrics):

lavender haze (purely because of the pure beat, and my jaw dropped when she said "meet me at midnight")

maroon (love the lower range of her voice, that chorus had me listening to it on repeat trying to figure out the words)

karma (loved the twist on the song, pure bop)

midnight rain (that warped voice was a great choice, completely surprised me, first song i learnt from midnights on guitar, so i'm biased)

you're on your own kid (i loved the softness in her voice, and the depth of the lyrics)

question...? (loved the beat of this song, was a stand-out in my first listen)

mastermind (love the drop between the verse and the chorus, sealed it's place for me)

vigilante shit (this is what we all expected karma to be and i am here for it, love the beat, lyrics: top tier)

anti-hero (hyped up for myself way too much, but after a few listens, it's probably in my top 5. the lyrics did it for me)

snow on the beach (missed lana del ray's vocals so that cut it short for me, again, climbed my ranks hugely in the last few weeks)

bejeweled (love the twinkling, climbed my ranks so fast, probably top 2 now)

sweet nothing (seemed a bit dull of my first listen, love the vibes, and the lyrics are probably the best of the album)

labyrinth (fell short a bit for me, the repetitive chorus is something i would probably still skip past)

okay, then come the 3am tracks. so i was at school (international swiftie) so i couldn't listen to it straight away, but my friend burst into maths screaming about the 7 extra tracks and that's how i found out about them. here's my ranking:

paris (initial favourite, got hooked onto the first verse during my first listen)

would've, could've, should've (love, love, love the lyrics, probably best chorus of the album)

high infidelity (love the beat and the song just hooked me)

great war (love the pre-chorus, just gives me goosebumps every time i listen to it)

glitch (i just love this song. i've seen a lot of hate and i just don't understand)

bigger than the whole sky (i always used the confuse this song and would've could've should've (don't ask) i love this song so much, and the vocals 👌)

dear reader (mixed feelings about this song, but definitely the best bridge of the album)

so there we have it! my rather long midnights review. feel free to comment your opinions i'd love to know!!

am i the only one who doesn’t want a love interest for grayson in the brothers hawthorne?

hear me out, i think it’s unnecessary. everyone is saying “i want grayson happy i want him to find someone in the new book” but like, i don’t think he needs someone to be happy? i hate the idea that you need a significant other to be happy.

to me, romantic relationships don’t mean much bc (personally) i don’t think romantic relationships would make a person (aka me) happier than they already are. i’m just pointing out some pre-existing biases so i make it clear where i’m coming from especially in grayson’s case.

for grayson specifically, i don’t think a romantic relationship will do him any good. now i’m not one to talk about what’s best for him, but look at it like this. he was in a toxic relationship and he was in love and she manipulated him and then she died and he blamed himself. then he meets a new girl and develops feelings for her (and she gives mixed signals), only for her to choose his brother. and even after that, he’s still in love with her.

let that soak in a bit. this man does not need a relationship. what he needs is to heal. before he can love someone else, he needs to learn to love himself. he needs to learn to not blame himself for everything. he needs to learn to let himself be happy. he needs to believe he deserves that. and giving him a love interest in the brothers hawthorne would completely disregard the healing process he so clearly needs to go through.

he’s only 20, and he’s already been through so much, and been heartbroken so many times. i don’t think he needs anyone. i think he deserves to be happy on his own, without any love interest.

i’m not saying he should never find someone. not at all. i’m just saying not NOW. not in this series.

(also as an averygrayson myself, i def don’t think avery and jameson should break up where avery and grayson end up together bc first off, that would be wayyy too messy. we don’t need jameson and gray to fight anymore; like whatever she picked jameson. and second, that would make grayson the second choice, which he deserves better.)

midnights - mirrorball theory!!

(extremely long)

okay so we have all heard the theories about midnights being lover's sister album and the original ts8 that was planned before the pandemic. but let me do a small recap for those who haven't seen the theories

so taylor has talked about how with folklore and evermore those were the first albums where she didn't immediately start planning what's next after finishing and releasing an album. so she started planning ts8 after the release of lover this is from her apple music interview:

we can see that there was a shift in eras towards the end of 2019 the rainbow of colours suddenly went dark and muted.

the same kind of vibes we are seeing now with midnights

back to mirrorball...

taylor wrote mirrorball after loverfest got cancelled (and her original plans for ts8 were also put on hold)

"they called off the circus (loverfest) and burned the DISCO down (ts8)" - disco was very popular in the 70s/60s just like this kind of album cover...

taylor also said in the long pond studio sessions that she imagined mirrorball happening at a lonely bar IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT

and there's been many many nods to mirrorball since this era began, for example the maker of Taylor's VMAs dress used mirrorball lyrics in the caption they wrote

another clue is the fact that the countdown on the merch store has MIRRORED numbers underneath JUST LIKE THE MIRRORBALL LYRIC VIDEO

and speaking of the mirrorball lyric video IT HAS THE SAME COLOURS AS THE MIDNIGHTS CDS

and if all that wasn't enough, taylor swift used an actual mirrorball in the lover era, in an interview about easter eggs WHILE talking about how she leaves easter eggs for things that won't come out till WAYYY later in interviews
