FINAL DESTINATION: The End
POSTER 3: IMPACT ON WATER
Now there were alot of issues with the making of this poster. I had a hard time visually representing salinity of water. Hence i had to come up with different ideas, experimenting with layouts and font sizes
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Milly ma'am gave me a feedback saying the illustration did not represent the concept. So I had to figure out another way. Removing the illustration of the boat I went for a much simpler layout and illustration.

POSTER 4: IMPACT ON INFRASTRUCTURE
Since the impact of salinization on infrastructure is pretty direct, I made an illustration representing the destruction saline water had on buildings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
POSTER 5: INTRODUCTORY POSTER
Although the flow of this blog was in the process of my work flow, the poster is actually the 1st poster in the series. It's an introductory poster on what salinization is, and the impact it has on the earth.
Tumblr media
(wait, is this background color only better?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anddddd, that's the end of our project! I have to say it has been the most intense module till date, but I have never seen as much improvement of my skill sets, as I did here. I had never illustrated before and I was still uncomfortable with the digital medium, but this module really helped me grow, as a designer and a person. I could really see how much I could push myself to do better work and how much I enjoyed the work process. Forever grateful to Milly ma'am, for making us work through and through, helping us reach new heights.
Thank you :))

THE FINAL DESTINATION
I'm kidding, i meant final project, the series of 5 posters. The project that required me to pull many all nighters (ahhh and the dreadful hand cramps).
Well where do i even begin? After starting my research and working on my concepts, i started ideating for each poster. Since i was looking at 5 different aspects and the impacts, i was brainstorming the visual aspect of the poster. Since i had to illustrate each and every poster, i was contemplating whether i should represent the information in a direct or indirect way. Because this topic has not been touched upon before, i was struggling to find the visual language.
POSTER 1: Soil salinization
I had a pretty clear view on how i wanted to represent this. Since rice is the most affected crop, i used that to represent the impact that salinization had on soil, thus leading to crop damage.
Tumblr media
In the 1st iteration, my poster didnt look like a poster. It was because the poster lacked text hierarchy and the layout did not make sense.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Working on the criticism that i got, i made multiple iterations, comparing it to the other posters as well, trying to distinguish a particular visual balance.
Tumblr media
POSTER 2: IMPACT ON HUMAN HEALTH
As i was illustrating the border of the second poster, i realized i could use the element in that to represent hypertension and cardiovascular disease. It was represented through thorns and an illustrative heart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
to be continued.....

FINAL PROJECT RESEARCH
During that one week, i found so many different articles on various topics. You know there's a research team in Germany has built a 3D printer for bones!! Yess bones!!
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Well thats really cool, but thats not the topic for now. As i was saying before, news is very important for designers. The last session brought us to our final project, a series of 5 posters, based on the news that we picked.
All of us chose a news and drew out a concept based on that. My news is based off a topic which is relevantly new. It is about the new problem that has occured due to global warming, unsustainable practices, etc. Over Salinization!
Now salt is not only used in the food industry, but in water treatments and road development. So its primarily everywhere. So what is over salinization?
Salt exists naturally in oceanic rocks, deep on the ocean floor. The salt then rises to the surface of the Earth. But, humans (obviously) have been over producing salt, leading to damage the delicate balance called the Salt Cycle. So globally, over 300 metric tons of salt is produced each year. Thats too much salt for the earth to take. Hence the varied consequences.
The most primary issue is the salinization of soil. This turns farm lands into wasteland, threatening food security. 833 hectares of land have already been affected. Thats about 10% of the croplands. Hence it threatens food security (so not a nice thing).Salinization impacts multiple different sectors.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since we have to make a series of 5 posters, i chose the sectors of soil, water, human health and infrastructure. Working on this topic, I started conceptualizing each of the posters, drawing inspiration from different posters. I came across this one poster, inspired by the art nouveau style.
Art nouveau is a style that is inspired very much by nature, having a beautiful and decorative style, with flowing lines. Opposite to the concept of my poster, I thought it would beautifully represent the damage and destruction that salinization has on nature.
With this concept, I started ideating.
Stay tuned to see the progress ! Thank you

NEWS
Well my GK is uhhh, well not really that great! I have been working on it and I am starting to read more articles on the things that are happening around the world. So on this particular day, we were given the opportunity to do so. Milly maam randomly arrived to class one day and said, "Do you guys read the News? Everyone give me one new update, not later than last friday!" We were confused, wondering why this was asked. Each of us gave a piece of news, ranging from the world cup, to the the Uttarkashi tunnel collapsing.
Tumblr media
Now how is news, relevant in a designer's life? We as students and designers, tend to lose the path of impact that we're trying to create. Do we want to just make visually pleasing designs or do we want it to make the audience think and wonder? Is our purpose just to make things more efficient or do we create something that benefits society as a whole? These are all the questions and thoughts that occured. If we are not aware of the events that are happening in and around us, how can we make….better designs?
This leads us to research. We tend to just hear, but we need to listen and be conscious. Design as a whole, works on being user centric. So are we listening to the user? Are we aware of what the user needs/wants? News helps us be aware of that. Although it may be wrong sometimes, it brings in information about the users across the globe, helping us shape our ideas better!!

INTERACTIVE POSTER
Now there are many different ways that you can keep your audience engaged. It could be through powerful visuals, or through an interesting layout. Having an interactive element is one of them. Humans tend to have a really short attention span. We get distracted very easily, so having an interactive element brings focus. So what could be the interactive element for our 3rd poster?
In our childhood, there were many toys that constantly keep us engaged. From Colouring books to those ball games in pencil boxes. (Do you think thread erasers are an interactive element? hmm). Well anyway, do you remember those red and blue glasses that we used to get in games, where if you looked through red, you would see one image and if you looked through blue, another? Nostalgiaaaaa! Well that was my interactive element for my 3rd poster.
Tumblr media
I have to say it was a quite a challenge, firstly because i had never done something like this, and second, i was illustrating this poster digitally.
Taking a tangent from my previous poster, i changed my direction of my concept towards toxic masculinity. A prevalent term in today's generation, but how does it actually impact society as a whole? From generations down, there is this ideology that has been present, where men are expected to keep a strong face, and not "breakdown" in front of others. Its being "too emotional". But emotions are only natural. Being vulnerable is such a strong thing that people don't understand the power it has (haha back to power)! But in society, why is it that men hold back and withdraw from this? Why is this not considered "toxic masculinity"?
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Now addressing this issue, i started my 1st iteration. I faced a lot of technical issues, trying to understand how to move forward with the illustration. As i started the illustration, i had doubts whether this idea would work or not. At that moment i did not even have my glasses to check the functionality of the interactive element. I was basically, winging it! I was stuck in a tight spot, hoping red and blue cellophane paper would do the job! As i finished the illustration and came to class the next day, i went to check whether this poster works or not. But i faced yet another minor setback. There was only red cellophane paper in the stationary shop!!! So i did what i could, took some clear cellophane paper, and scribbled on with blue sketch pens. (It didn't work btw!). Although the DIY blue cellophane paper turned out to be a flop, the red paper worked!! So overall, i had a 50% success rate! (minus the missing blue cellophane paper).
Tumblr media
After the holidays, my red and blue glasses finally arrived and well what do you know, it works!! My interactive poster wasn't a fail! I did receive some feedback regarding the readability and legibility of the text, but apart from that it worked! This had to be one of my favourite assignments, and i learnt quite a lot of things.
Thank you :)

POWER!
What does power mean to you? Is it the scientific meaning of "the rate of doing work"? Or is it the physical ability? Perhaps the mental power, the ability to influence other people's perspective. Well that's what we were told to write. What are the words associated with power.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well now this can go into many different directions. It could be physical power, social power and many more. We were told to make a mind map on different aspects of power. Yes…. i know….mind maps. How will that help us in making a poster? Well it did actually. Forming groups, we brainstormed and branched out different aspects of psychological power. Looking at the mind, the most important part of psychology,we dove into the area of unconscious and conscious. What are the things that are formed in the unconscious and how does the environment and the people around affect it? Stereotypes and bias are 2 of the things that are formed. Due to various reasons, environment, childhood, family and experiences, we form unconscious bias and stereotypes towards certain things. Gender bias is one of them. It could be things related to work environment, education, etc. We looked at the aspect of Sexual harassment. So this was the topic of my second poster.
So what are the biases and stereotypes related to sexual harassment? It is a pressing issue in the present society and it fundamentally harms the safety of individuals. I wanted to look at the part which often gets over looked, especially in Indian society, "A man getting harassed". It is considered to be "not manly" or even "too feminine". Often times we hear the sentence, "She asked for it", when a female gets sexually harassed. Drawing from that, I used the hashtag #I Asked for it?, to make it more personal and gender neutral.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
In India, there are no laws that offically recognizes that a man can get sexually harassed too. A man or any individual regardless of gender should be able to get justice against such a henious crime. So this lead to my first iteration.
Tumblr media
The layouts and composition of the poster didn't particularly work. The text hierarchy was not present and there was no call for action. This lead to my second iteration.
Tumblr media
Final poster (which could still be better)
Tumblr media
So what do you think of power?

KNOW MY CLASSMATE!
Do i know my classmates? i think i do? Do i talk to all of them? As of now no! But I was given a wonderful opportunity to do so :). For our 1st assignment of this project, we were told to get to know our classmate and make a poster for them. Well Anushka, after all the trial and errors i hope i did you justice! Anyway, we spent the first 20 mins of our class chit chatting, well, getting to know each other. It was quite a wonderful conversation actually. We talked about our likes and dislikes, our childhood memories, and most important of all, our journey to design school! We talked about how life changing the decision was to pursue design, a field that nobody did in our family, and how we would be the 1st.
So starting on the information we exchanged, we started drafting our 1st ideations. To be really honest, in the beginning of the module i didn't really know how to represent the content that i had. It starts with content, but you need to find the context. Without the context, you cannot conceptualize, and without the concept we cannot have a composition. It took me a while to realize that, because with the 1st ideation that i had, i didn't represent Anushka's story the way i was supposed to. My illustration wasn't great and i had trouble with the text as well. "Acceptance and Growth" in the Raleway font didn't cut it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Criticism is one of the most important aspects in the design field. How will we grow if we are not able to recognize and work on our mistakes? So reviewing each other's works really helped us understand that. We were told to give one good and one negative feedback. This would give us the opportunity to improvize our ideas and refine them. Seeing what went wrong and what went right really boosted each other's work quality. We as a class, reviewed each other's work, and because of that we were able to come up with multiple iterations.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(no because what is this!!)
This poster didn't represent my classmate, at all!!!! That moment i realized, how important conscious visualization of information is. Because visuals, they make an impact, they give a message! Now are all of these things part of who Anushka is? yes. But has it been represented in the correct way? No, not at all. So, working on the criticism that i received i worked on the final iteration of this poster. Aipan art, the art of Uttarakhand, is part of Anushka's heritage. Hence I used that element to make it part of the illustration itself.
Tumblr media
So i hope i represented Anushka well, even if its a small part! Lemme know what you think. I'm open to more criticism ;)

THE BEGINNING OF A PROJECT
Well, hello everyone! This week we started our final module of our semester 3, Poster Making!!! Ahhh exciting moment indeed!
We were introduced to our faculty, Mrs. Milly Singh, who also happened to be the panelist for my 1st jury in design school. I still remember my first interaction and the criticism that i got! But anyway, moving forward. It was an ice breaking session getting to know the flow of the module, and how the work procedure would be. We were given a brief on what are the expectations and the criteria for our work, and obviously, the biggest thing of them all, our grading system. The college just introduced a new examination system, so we would be having an exhibition instead of an individual jury (i don't really know what to feel about it but I'm tensed nonetheless). In that particular moment, we went back in time and revised the basics from foundation year, recalling all the things we learnt, from colour theory to geometry and sketching. Drawing back from our learnings from the other modules in graphic design itself, i realised how intertwined all our subjects are! I mean you know they're all connected, but it wasn't always in my consciousness. It was fascinating to understand how a simple medium, such as posters, could actually reflect all the learning that you had.
Something that Milly maam had emphasized on was the importance of reading. You can have all the skill set in the world, but reading? reading gives you the knowledge to build on the assets you already have. Its important to know and be conscious of what is going on around you and how everything changes and evolves. Thus, we saw the journey of.....TYPE! Milly ma'am's area of expertise, Typography, is a huge part of graphic design and we looked at the history of it. The journey from the carvings of Roman letters to handwritten books to metal type and digital text, we saw how typography has a significant role in history. It was interesting to say the least.
We also understood how powerful a poster can be. Posters are such a significant part of our life, that often times we miss it. From the half torn movie posters stuck to street lights to digital posters that we see as ads, they are everywhere. And these posters make an impact, subconsciously, without us even realizing. So how do we as designers, use this medium to make a mark in the world? I hope to discover that during this module, so stay tuned!!!
