I think the writers wanted to show another side of him, since some people can't stand Sylvain at all while he actually has great depth and does have positive traits (despite being very flawed at the same time).

They also went out of their way for Hubert too; his character is much more explored and addressed a lot of issues with him. The difference is that Hubert is def the same person (I really like Hubert so everything hopes did made me go yeah that makes sense), while Sylvain is just... perfect now?

In Hopes instead of just showing yeah he can be a great guy, they just stripped him of all flaws and now his biggest issue is he's... lazy?? Dude. That's not my boy :'3 Some people do like him more now, but I just feel as if he's been really flattened.

Also? Holy Knight as preferred class? Not Dark or canon-compliant Great? Smh

I still hate how washed Sylvain is in Hopes. It's clear that the writers of Hopes tried to listen to fandom criticism and wishes when creating these alternate universe characters, but straight up removing what made Sylvain a FUN character?

I will never say that Sylvain's attitude was right, because at the end of the day, he's just an asshole. His entire possibility of an arc was stripped away in Hopes, just sped to the end without any thought to it and it's played off a a joke

War changes people, he did need to mature pretty quickly, but we see absolutely nothing leftover from how he was before the war broke out. He still is the Gautier heir, the ones girls chase after because they want to use him for his blood. The outside world still sees him as the same man because they have no reason to think otherwise, there's no tools known to Fodlan that will REMOVE a crest from someone

But we never see those girls chasing after him, we never get to see his character arc. We don't get to see him struggling against old habits, we don't see him making that effort to be a better person. We just see him post-arc, and it's made into a joke
