History of Korean Currencies
Who are the people on Korean bill?
50,000 Bill
Tumblr media
The woman on the bill is Shin Saimdang of the Joseon era. Due to her filial devotion to her parents and love for children, Shin Saimdang has been held up as a model of Confucian ideals.
Before the 50,000 note was released in 2009, the 10,000 won notes was the highest denomination in South Korea.
10,000 Bill
Tumblr media
The person portrayed on the green 10,000 won bill is Sejeong the Greatm the famous king of Joseon.
King Joseon is credited with establishing much of what we think of as Korean culture, and he also created the Korean alphabet, hangul.
5,000 Bill
Tumblr media
The person printed on the organ 5,000 won bill is the son of Shin Saimdang who we saw earlier on the 50,000 won bill.
Yi I was a Korean philosopher who had a huge influence on Confucianism and philosophy in Korea.
1,000 Bill
Tumblr media
The star of the blue 1,000 won bill is the Confucian scholar Yi Hwang. He was one of the two most prominent scholars of the Joseon dynasty, the other being Yi I.
Yi Hwang was a master of calligraphy band poetry, and was known as a scholar who wasn’t concerned with either money or status.
500 coin
Tumblr media
The 500 won coin in circulation today made its appearance at the beginning of the 1980s. Actually, 500 bills were printed until May 12, 1993, but it slowly disappeared.
The old 500 won note feature admiral Yi Sun-Sin of Joseon Korea.
100 Coin
Tumblr media
The Korean hero, Yi Sun-shin (previously found on the old 500 won bill), is depicted on the 100 won coin which is in circulation today.
Bills were printed for the 100 won denomination until December 1, 1980.
50 Coin
Tumblr media
A stalk of rice is printed on the current and the previous series of the 50 won coin.
500 won was printed as a bill until 1973. However, the 5,000 won bill had been introduced the previous year, and this was the beginning of inflation which saw both bill denominations and market prices rise.
The values of Korean money had fluctuated a lot throughout history, but after introducing a stronger monetary policy in 1962, it finally began to stabilize.
10 Coin
Tumblr media
10-won coin has through several series had the Dabotap Pagoda printed on it. The original red-brown color was changed to more a yellow nuance in 1983.
However, the cost of minting this version was too high, so they changed the color again in 2006 to a light brown. Because of their low value, 10-won coins are not that frequently used.
5 & 1 Coin
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The 5-won and 1-won coins share a lot of history.
With economic development, inflation, and the introduction of higher denominations, the cost of producing lesser coins came to exceed the face value of the coins.
In the 60s, both 5-won and 1-won were also found as bills, but you can’t buy anything with a 1 coin these days.

Hallyu: Unveiling the Wave of Korean Culture
Tumblr media
In recent years, the term "Hallyu" has become a global buzzword, representing the sweeping wave of Korean culture that has captivated audiences worldwide. This cultural phenomenon transcends borders, leaving an indelible mark on various industries. Let's dive into the meaning and history of the word 'Hallyu' to unravel the essence of this captivating wave.
 The Meaning of Hallyu:
"Hallyu," translated as the "Korean Wave," refers to the global popularity and influence of South Korean culture, encompassing various forms of entertainment, including music, television dramas, films, fashion, and cuisine. The term captures the surge of interest and appreciation for Korean cultural exports beyond the nation's borders.
Tumblr media
Origins and Early Influences:
The roots of Hallyu can be traced back to the late 20th century when South Korea began exporting its television dramas and pop music to neighboring Asian countries. The early 2000s saw a significant expansion of this cultural influence, with the emergence of iconic K-dramas like "Winter Sonata" and the rise of K-pop groups such as BoA and TVXQ.
Hallyu 2.0: Global Expansion:
As technology advanced and digital platforms proliferated, Hallyu experienced a second wave of expansion in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Social media, streaming services, and online communities played a pivotal role in connecting fans worldwide, fostering a global community united by a shared love for Korean culture.
Tumblr media

Korean dramas, with their compelling storytelling, charismatic actors, and unique cultural elements, became a driving force behind Hallyu's global reach. Shows like "Descendants of the Sun" and "Crash Landing on You" captured the hearts of audiences far beyond Asia, contributing to the mainstream acceptance of Korean entertainment.
K-Pop's Meteoric Rise:
Perhaps the most prominent aspect of Hallyu is the global phenomenon of K-pop. Groups like BTS, BLACKPINK, and EXO have transcended language barriers, achieving unprecedented success on a global scale. Their music, dynamic performances, and engagement with fans through social media have solidified K-pop's position as a musical force to be reckoned with.
Tumblr media
Beyond Entertainment: The Cultural Ripple Effect:
Hallyu extends beyond entertainment, influencing fashion trends, and beauty standards, and even sparking interest in the Korean language and cuisine. The global popularity of Korean skincare products, fashion brands, and traditional dishes reflects the widespread impact of Hallyu on diverse aspects of lifestyle and culture.
The Future of Hallyu:
As we look to the future, Hallyu shows no signs of slowing down. With new generations of talented artists emerging, innovative storytelling in dramas and films, and the continuous evolution of K-pop, the Korean Wave is poised to reach even greater heights. Hallyu has become a cultural bridge connecting people from different backgrounds, fostering cross-cultural understanding, and celebrating the richness of Korean creativity.
Tumblr media
Hallyu is not merely a trend; it's a cultural phenomenon that has woven the threads of Korean creativity into the global fabric. As the wave continues to surge, captivating audiences and breaking barriers, Hallyu stands as a testament to the power of culture to transcend boundaries and unite people in the shared joy of artistic expression.

Semester in SK: Drinking Culture
안녕하세요 여러분! Here I have yet another Instagram post about something big I’ve learned about during my semester here: the drinking culture! Drinking is so popular in Korea in part because it is a way for people to relax and bond with each other. I thought I’d share some of the basics of drinking culture as not only is it an important activity in Korea, but it might be quite different from the drinking culture in your own country (I know it’s different in the US!). I hope this offers just a little bit of insight :) 화이팅!

Korean Self-Love Quotes/Proverbs & Life Lessons
남의 떡이 더 커보인다.
Literal Translation: The other person’s rice cake is bigger than yours
Meaning: don’t compare yourself or your life with someone else’s
Life Lesson:
Especially on social media, you only see the parts that other people choose to show - the highlights, but not the behind the scenes. You’re life is not better or worse than another persons. The grass always looks greener on the other side, but you never know what that person is going through behind the scenes. Don’t try to trade your life in for another person’s just because of how things appear on the outside.
Vocab from proverb:
남 - another person, stranger
의 - possessive particle (‘s)
떡 - rice cake
더 - more
크다 - big
아/어 보이다 - to look, appear, seem
엎질러진 물이다
Literal Translation: It is spilled water.
Meaning: There is no use in crying over spilled milk.
Life Lesson:
A lot of things in life aren’t worth crying over, especially if it’s something that happened in the past. The past is the past and we have to learn to let go of the past. If you dwell on your failures, your shortcomings, your embarrassing moments, or any other terrible things you may have experienced in the past - It will keep you from living in the present. You Can Not Change The Past - no matter how much you think about it, so there’s no use “crying” over it. Don’t let the past determine who you are today. Whenever you catch yourself worrying too much about a past occurrence, tell yourself, “It already happened and I can’t control that, but I can control what I do today”.
Vocab from proverb:
엎질러지다 - to spill
물 - water
똥이 무서워서 피하니? 더러워서 피하지.
Literal Translation: you don’t avoid poop, because it’s scary. You avoid poop because it’s dirty.
Meaning: you should avoid certain things and people in your life, not because you are scared, but because it will disrupt your peace and happiness.
Life Lesson:
If at all possible try to remove or minimize contact with toxic people in your life - even if that just means distancing yourself from them mentally. Also avoid overtly negative and toxic situations whenever you can, because it can improve your mental health and overall happiness. Holding on to grudges, anger, sadness, etc. can also be harmful to your mental health - It may be hard to hear but some things you have to let go of. For yourself and your peace of mind. Forgive yourself of any past mistakes or failures and allow yourself to move forward.
Vocab from proverb:
똥 - poop
무섭다 - be scared of
아/어/해서 - because
피하다 - to avoid
니? - informal question ending
더럽다 - to be dirty
지 - shortened form of 지요 / 죠
(when speaker confirms something they thought the listener already knew)
말을 냇가에 끌고 갈 수는 있어도 억지로 물을 먹일 수는 없다
Literal Translation: You can lead a horse and go to a stream, but you can’t make it drink water through its own will
Meaning: You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink
Life Lesson:
You can’t force someone to do something that they don’t want to do. You can’t change someone who isn’t willing to change. You can’t save someone who doesn’t want to be saved. You can’t help someone who doesn’t want to be helped. There are many ways to say it, but the overall message is the same.
On the opposite side of the coin, It’s a great idea to be open and willing to positive changes and to growth. In life you want to always be growing and not static - unless your perfect (which no one is). Sometimes we may feel static and like we are going no where no matter how hard we try to move. In those cases, either you need to make a change and do something a bit different or you are moving forward but it’s just so slowly that you don’t notice it - taking a step back and looking at your situation objectively can sometimes help.
Vocab from proverb:
말 - horse
냇가 - stream (of water)
끌다 - to lead
고 - and
가다 - to go
ㄹ 수 있다 - can do
아/어도 - even if
억지 - force
(으)로 - by (explain methods)
억지로 - by force
물 - water
먹이다 - to feed, make eat/drink
ㄹ 수(는) 없다 - can’t
(the 는 adds emphasis)
That's all for this post! Which proverb is your favorite?

Side Dishes in Korea
Why do we get served so many each meal?
1. Background Information
Tumblr media
One of the most appealing things about eating out in Korea is the unlimited free refill on the side dishes, known as banchan.
This practice is deeply rooted in Korean history and character as a nation
2. Kimchi
Tumblr media
There are hundreds of different types of kimchi, but the signature cabbage banchan is offered at pretty much every restaurant.
Koreans have for generations been storing vegetables in pots to ferment so that they will have food available for the winter.
3. Common Banchans
Tumblr media
Other than kimchi, there are bean sprouts, cucumber vegetables, and sesame leaves pickled in soy sauce.
Some of the more luxurious Korean restaurant sever egg rolls, tteokbooki, and ganjang gejang.
4. Banchans At Restaurant
Tumblr media
Eating at a Korean restaurant is always an exercise in how to maneuver all the dishes to actually fit on the table.
It is not uncommon to receive 3 or more different banchan dishes alongside the main course that you order.
5. Homemade Banchans
Tumblr media
During a kimchi-preparation event called kimjang, a large amout of kimchi is laid out for all members of the family work on.
This practice is less common these days, but parents still like to prepare kimchi and distribute it to their children as a show of affection.
6. Why Are Banchan Unlimited?
Tumblr media
One reason is that white rice was much more expensive than kimchi and banchan during difficult times in the Korean economy.
It was too expensive for restaurants to give refills of rice, but in order to make sure you were full, they offered you a second helping of banchan.
7. How Is Banchan Served?
Tumblr media
In order to reduce operating costs, some restaurants have suggested limiting or removing the unlimited banchan options, which many Korean people weren’t happy about.
To meet in the middle, many Korean restaurants these days have adopted a self-service system in which you can eat as much as you like, but you have to approach the food station and fill your own bowls.

Hi, I'm recently learning Korean and I came across your blog. I heard somebody saying 태정태세문단세 and I don't know what it means, I think it's sort of the king's name. Could you please tell me what it means?
Hello! If I understand correctly, 태정태세문단세 is an acronym of the first seven kings of Korea's names. According to this website, these are each of the king's names and some of the things they are known for (really hope I'm interpreting this right considering I don't know much about Korean history!):
태조 : 조선 개국, 1차 왕자의 난, 정도전 = Founded the Joseon dynasty, first prince's rebellion, Jeong Dojeon (early Joseon scholar)
정종 : 2차 왕자의 난 = Second prince's rebellion
태종: 호패법 실시, 왕권 강화 = Implementation of identification tag law (read about that here!), reinforcement of regal power
세종: 한글 창제, 훈민정음 반포, 황희, 장영실 = Invention of Hangul, proclamation of Korean script, Hwang Hui (a politician), Jang Yeong-sil (a scientist and inventor)
문종 (website doesn't say anything about him)
단종: 계유정난, 김종서 = coup d'etat where Prince Suyang dethroned Kim Jong-seo and took over the government
세조: 사육신, 직전법 실시, 한명회 = Six martyred ministeres (read about them here!), implementation of land system law, Han Myeong-hoe (politician and soldier)
Thanks for the question and for your patience--I ended up learning a lot too! Hope this is helpful! 화이팅!

The Dynamics of KPop Survival Shows and Group Formation
Tumblr media
The world of K-pop is synonymous with talent, charisma, and unforgettable group dynamics. In recent years, the rise of K-pop survival shows has become a fascinating aspect of the industry, providing a unique glimpse into the formation of idol groups. Join us as we unravel the intricate process behind these shows and how they shape the creation of K-pop groups that capture hearts worldwide.
The Birth of K-Pop Survival Shows
K-pop survival shows are reality television programs that bring together aspiring artists, often trainees from various entertainment agencies, to compete for a coveted spot in a new idol group. These shows have gained immense popularity for their ability to showcase raw talent, individual growth, and the emotional rollercoaster experienced by both participants and viewers.
Tumblr media
Training and Challenges:
Contestants on K-pop survival shows undergo rigorous training in singing, dancing, and sometimes even acting or variety show skills. Weekly challenges and performances test their abilities, pushing them to their limits. The journey is not only a test of talent but also a demonstration of perseverance, teamwork, and adaptability in the highly competitive K-pop landscape.
Formation of Temporary Groups:
One of the unique aspects of K-pop survival shows is the creation of temporary or project groups. Unlike traditional idol groups, these formations are temporary alliances crafted specifically for the duration of the show or a predetermined period afterward. The members may come from different agencies, adding an extra layer of diversity to the group.
Viewer Participation and Voting:
A key element of K-pop survival shows is the active involvement of viewers in the voting process. Fans play a crucial role in determining the fate of contestants, casting votes for their favorite trainees. This direct engagement creates a strong bond between fans and the budding idols, establishing a supportive community invested in the success of the participants.
Tumblr media
Emotional Journeys and Growth:
Beyond the glitz and glamour, K-pop survival shows delve into the personal stories and struggles of the contestants. Viewers witness the emotional highs and lows, forming connections with the trainees as they navigate the challenges of the competition. These narratives contribute to the human aspect of the idol journey, making the resulting group more relatable and endearing.
Debut and Post-Show Trajectory:
Upon the conclusion of the survival show, the winning contestants form the new idol group. The debut becomes a highly anticipated event, with fans eager to see how the dynamics established during the show will translate into the group's official activities. Post-debut, these groups continue to be in the spotlight, embarking on careers that often include album releases, variety show appearances, and international tours.
Tumblr media
Examples of Success: IOI, Wanna One, and Beyond:
Several K-pop groups formed through survival shows have achieved remarkable success. IOI and Wanna One, both products of the "Produce 101" series, garnered massive fanbases and left an indelible mark on the industry. The same could be said for Kep1er and ZEROBASEONE who are products of the “Girls Planet” and “Boys Planet” series. The success of these groups has paved the way for subsequent survival shows, each contributing to the evolution and diversification of K-pop.
Tumblr media
K-pop survival shows are not merely competitions; they are immersive experiences that bring fans closer to the journey of aspiring idols. The formation of groups through these shows adds an extra layer of excitement and emotional investment for viewers, creating a bond that goes beyond the music. As the world continues to embrace the global phenomenon of K-pop, the unique format of survival shows will likely remain a captivating aspect of the industry, producing the next generation of chart-topping idols.
