Deeply saddened to hear the tragic and untimely deaths of those 5 guys in the Loafers Lodge fire. Unfortunately, Wellington has tragically lost one of its beloved residents, Mike the Juggler, and to see him go way too soon, it's just absolutely tragic and heartbreaking to see him and his fellow residents die in the horrific blaze. My heart goes out to the families of Mike, Melvin, Peter, Liam and Kenneth. Deepest condolences to these guys' families and friends during this difficult time. And I found out on the Dominion Post even worse, grizzlier and more gut-wrenching that Mike's dog, Truffles was found decomposing inside the burnt-out hostel several months after the tragic and horrific arson attack in Newtown. However, I'm really grateful that the guy in his 40s who burnt down Loafers Lodge had been charged with murder and I really hope he goes to jail for this horrendous and unnecessary act. I'm really angry at the perpetrator and his acts as well as beyond sad at the tragic loss of life. The Loafers Lodge fire tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the vulnerabilities of older residents in the community.

Aussie killed in Ukraine

New Zealand Army veteran Corporal Dominic Abelen lost his life in the Russian War in Ukraine in August 2022. Abelen came to New Zealand from Australia before he joined NZDF. He was on leave without pay from NZDF and was the first New Zealander to die in Ukraine. In January 2023, British-New Zealand Humanitarian aid worker Dr. Andrew Bagshaw and his fellow Brit Christopher Parry died while saving many Ukrainian people during the Russian invasion, Kiwi volunteer, and former NZDF soldier Kane Te Tai died while fighting for Ukraine.

It is with great sadness that we share the tragic news of the fatal stabbing of Rose Cottage Superette dairy worker Janak Patel in Sandringham, Auckland. Patel was transported to Auckland City Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries and donated his organs to save many lives. As Auckland Council, we offer our deepest condolences to his whanau and friends. This tragedy should not have happened if fog cannons were installed prior to the incident.
