Wow! I can’t tell you how excited I am to have professional photos of my biggest paintings. In the past I have had to scan my big paintings. An “ok” fix for paintings that were matte, but works with shiny or 3D elements weren’t crisp. Well my roomate @itsmichaeldruce offered to take my biggest paintings to @thelinestudios and give them the star treatment. It was so nice of him to take on the challenge of these pieces, especially my 4-foot, glossy, and gold-leaf painting “Shot from the Front.” He patiently built a backdrop and lightbox for my suppppperrr lonnnnggg painting. I’ve got the *new* photos up on my *new* website that I built to apply for some cons. #photoshoot #sarahvanrose #brooklynartist #workinprogress #wolfart #wolftattoo #acrylicpainting (at The Line Studios) https://www.instagram.com/p/B07HFqugv-W/?igshid=ocfvaguy9q6u

Um you guys. How cool is this? I got to see one of my designs in person! @denka1017 ordered my portrait of him and my “Year of the Rooster” painting on Redbubble’s pouches. All I have to say is wow. They exceeded my expectations. I would highly recommend these. Firstly, colors were SO BRIGHT the lines are crisp and the design is like, dyed into the fabric? The fabric itself is thick but so soft. The inside is coated with a different material. After several months of using it daily Denis reports that it’s easy to clean and retains very little odor from the inside of his backpack. I was surprised when I saw the pouch how new it looked even after some use! Colors were vibrant and the threads hadn’t frayed in the least. A lot of artists struggle with hands, but I find them to be fun and expressive. I can admit though, a lot of my school time I spent struggling with them. One wrong line and, just like a person’s face, you could have a drawing of something lumpy, unexpressive, and uncanny. Several things ultimately improved my drawings. At some point towards the end of my second year of school, I committed to practicing portraiture. I took two semesters of just portrait painting from life. This got me recording 3-D to 2-D forcing me to really think about the forms I was drawing. We also did a lot of timed drills in class, which encourages a bold, confident, line. Another turning point would be receiving Claire Wendling’s sketchbook “Iguana Bay 2.0” Before seeing Claire’s work I had not clicked with a particular artist’s style. Seeing this artist’s sketchbook and her expressive, contour lines inspired me. She was very good at showing 3-D form with an exaggerated, expressive, style. I was in love with handling of the female form, hips, wrinkles, dreadlocks, lips... The French artist’s know their stuff 🥰 And finally, once I had a style in mind and a little experience from school I set out to practice. Three nights a week I’d spend hours at the open model sessions drawing nudes from life and evolving my style. Even a year out of school I still practiced at sessions, and it became the most peaceful part of my life in a time where I didn’t know what I was going to do next. . . . . . . . #sarahvanrose #drawing #figuredrawing #drawingfromlife #brooklynartist #newyorkartist #digitalpainting #portraitdrawing (at Savannah Historic District) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0EGwEJgxma/?igshid=1u8uflct8xgb2

I’ve spent a great deal of time uploading old and new works to my Redbubble. I’ve buckled down to bring the people who buy my art more sizes and more colors. I’ve learned A LOT about the products and how to improve them. I’ve resized, repainted, and rescanned so many pieces, my old computer sounds like a rocket about to take off. Here you can see I’ve uploaded three different versions of the same painting. One a circle on white, one a circle on a dark grey, and one an extended version of the clouds so you get to enjoy the painting of this horse edge-to-edge on mugs, blankets, duvet covers, pillows, and dresses. You can find this painting and many more on my store: redbubble.com/people/sarahvanrose @redbubble @redbubbleartists #redbubble #redbubbleartist #horseartist #homedecor #horse #Andalusian #mustang #westernart (at Williamsburg, Brooklyn) https://www.instagram.com/p/BzbcJikA6o4/?igshid=7j9cc3c2mqv4

I’ve worked for years on a series of paintings of horses. Their coats, their spirit, and their connection to nature inspires me. To me horses spots look like stars, storms, clouds, rivers and mountains. My mother loves horses and shared her passion with us growing up. We owned a horse, took lessons, had posters, magazines, and toys. My mother also bought paintings and prints of horses, especially books by Bev Doolittle. Bev Doolittle’s passion for horses radiates through her art, hiding them in plain site ducking in and out of forests, running with eagles, and splashing in white water streams. It’s her work that drives me to explore the connection I see between horses and storms. #horse #equine #horseart #painting #portrait #watercolor #storm #archespaper #pelicanwatercolors #artforsale #sarahvanrose #modelartist (at Brooklyn, New York) https://www.instagram.com/sarahvanrose/p/Bvz0IsPHeD1/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=r6kb0k0fo7iq

Did you know that when given 21 minutes or longer of foreplay only 7.7% of women fail to orgasm? I love learning facts like these that prompt me to create my work and show it to the world. The more you know about your body and your mind the more informed choices you can make about your health and relationships! I’ve wanted to buckle down and upload a ton of finished art on Reddbubble. Well I spent about 16 hours this week editing, cropping, tweaking, and typing up buckets of pieces for people to purchase. Most importantly I put up “Don’t Call” on white AND on pink! I’m especially fond of the soft pink phone case. So what are you waiting for? Show the world what’s important to *you* someone who knows how to get down. 😎 You can find this and many other cute things at Redbubble.com/people/sarahvanrose #sarahvanrose #redbubble #redbubbleartist #modelartist #kitty #cat #pussycats #pussypower #kitten #sphynxcat #sexualhealth #sexeducation #feminism #feminist (at Brooklyn, New York) https://www.instagram.com/sarahvanrose/p/BvkrEJ9HYYt/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1tbdfg3gxb44m

Here’s some detail shots and the photo I worked from to create this painting. I am always stretching myself to download new brushes, new tutorials, and buy new books to achieve the painterly look in this painting. A combination of my favorite things about digital and traditional techniques is what I strive for. I love the lively digital lines of @loisvb while at the same time I try to capture the unfinished quality of dauby brush strokes, as if I am painting my subject in person and only have a small window of time! I also challenge myself to make bolder decisions by having alarms set. I find the limitation of time forces me to keep my eye on the subject, making the portrait more accurate, as well preventing “scratchy” hesitant lines. Or I challenge myself to be ruthless with my art and will erase an entire section if I am not 100% pleased with it. My rule is that if I begin a painting working from a tutorial and I deviate from it I MUST delete it and start over. In this painting I was nearly done, but I didn’t like the hair. So I completely deleted it and started over using only three values in my first pass. This expressed the form of the hair much better. Killing my darlings has improved my work over the years substantially. I remember my second class in college was drawing exclusively from live nude models. We usually had three or three classes to finish a drawing. FREQUENTLY you’d work for hours and the professor would tell you to buff out everything and start again. It made students really mad but it pushed us to be better. He always said “you should record what you see quickly! Imagine the model is about to leave any minute!” It taught me that the work I put into a piece isn’t finite or unique, its all creativity that comes out of me and it can be repeated! Happy that I found a person who loves art as much as I do and keeps track of art news! We thoroughly enjoyed the @petitesluxures exhibit here in NYC. His work has always inspired me to make the kind of art I want to see even if I’m not sure others will like it, and to stretch myself to inject every piece I make with similar humor and wit (and to be more risqué!). If you’ve never seen his work, take a look. It’s a naughty treat ;) #eroticart #petiteluxures #minimalistart #exhibition #frenchartist #brooklynartist #newyorkgallery #newyorkartist #hashimotogallery (at Hashimoto Contemporary NYC) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt63KBoHdGB/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1gqr4d7pmjxo4

The dog is an ancient symbol of fidelity, loyalty, and companionship. Dogs and other canines are featured heavily in my art, usually functioning as a “self portrait” like in this painting. Depicting these canines allows me to personify my greatest qualities: my loyalty, and my sensitivity. In romantic and professional relationships I am an obliging, obedient, positive companion. But I habitually exercise these qualities to a fault, resulting in a loss of independence and agency. I often find myself unable to speak up, especially in situations of male harassment. By drawing the canines snarling, I imagine a bolder self with agency, the release of an inner protective fury that is more wild animal and less domestic companion. The canines in my work stare back with wise, self-aware eyes. “My space, my body, my autonomy!” I as the animal I rebel against the “hand that feeds” and buck the thinking that women should be (and make art that is) quiet, soft, and pretty. With blood, guts, vomit, bones, and amputated heads, I find a physical representation of my own pain and follow the well-worn path of other female artists; the female form as the grotesque. (In some of my works they aren’t self-protective as much as they represent repressed, baser, animal desires ;) By choosing animals/animal-people subjects in my work I also tap into the historic and religious traditions of the super-powered animal-human hybrid, and shape-shifters. #feministart #pelicanwatercolors #wolfart #wolftattoo #sexpositive #popsurrealism #sarahvanrose #themodelartist (at Brooklyn, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtjMsQIHjp4/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1fx15biu1xhsm

Is it weird to say Cardi B’s Bodack Yellow healed me? @wesley.annette has the best playlists and recommends a song for any mood. She told me to play this song a year ago when I was going through a hard time. My personal pieces very frequently represent sublime feelings I just can’t hold in! I created this piece as a celebration of my love for someone. My feelings don’t always stay the same after I finish a painting but knowing every piece represents a celebration or a heartbreak means my work functions as a sort of visual diary. I can look at a piece years later and gauge how far I’ve come artistically and how my feelings have evolved. Even though it’s a little sad to look at this painting sometimes, it’s so beautiful I keep it hung up in my room. I’m proud of the execution. I took my colorful line-hold digital style that is influenced by @loisvb into a traditional work that is a combo of Prisma colored pencil, watercolor, and acrylic that I learned as a 13-year-old from artists like @goldenwolfen .
